Last minute replacement for a corked bottle, so the first hour or so I will discount. That said, the following 90 minutes showed a wine that remained hard and unbalanced. There were glimpses of potential, but every time a complex nuance poked its nose out the tannins chopped it off. Three hours after opening it was still hard as a rock.
I have one more, and little hope that it will suddenly turn into a swan.

Brief note on a bottle drunk over three evenings. Fairly deep garnet colour softly browning. Earthy, plummy with preserved cherries and other red fruit. Chunky beef stew. Savoury with a little Gevrey funk, particularly on the second night. Some rusticity. Ripe, opulent 2002 berry fruit but with acceptable acidity. For drinking soon. Enjoyable!

2/2, cork 25% soaked (uneven). Medium garnet core, pale garnet rim. Nose is perfumed, aromatic, with bilberry/plum fruit and violet notes along with meatiness and a hint of mulch - really alluring and complex. Medium bodied, meaty dark fruit, quite savoury on the mid palate, fresh acidity, then tending towards leanness with quite chalky tannins showing on the bright, good length finish.

An evocative earthy and musky nose, maturing with plenty of dark cherry fruit, young leather, some textural tannin and nice acidity, just delicious with a really long finish.

A top note of violet belies a dark nose of blackberry, chocolate, and soil. Dense, almost brooding, Denis Bachelet's 2002 Gevrey-Chambertin shows impressive concentration and ripeness for a village, even with that old vines assist. A firm mineral base and a moderate tannic grip suggest this ought to evolve positively for a few more years. Good stuff.
