Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 90.3 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 33 notes)

Tasted by Grinner on 2/2/2010 & rated 90 points: A nice slightly "oily" wine w/ flower, white stone fruit, and a little citrus. Great w/ pizza margherita w/ hot cappacola added for the kick. (145 views)
Tasted by Paul D on 11/20/2009 & rated 92 points: Pale/medium gold. Complex, developed, petrolly nose with underlying ripe apple and some exotic fruit and floral notes. Now broad and generous on the palate with an almost oily texture but still fresh with laser-like acidity this has a minerally, petrolly initial attack, becoming fruitier on the mid-palate with ripe apple fruit and then orangey acidity on a lingering finish. Excellent. (364 views)
Tasted by winot on 9/24/2009 & rated 94 points: Med golden yellow, crystal clear - wonderfully pure, classic, almost austere nose w petrol, wet stones, gravel, minerals and a hint of lemon - seriously classic! - smooth mid-weight, builds and builds on the palate, starts off slowly but builds to crescendo - citrus, grapefruit pith, minerals - gorgeous stuff, with a finish that just doesn't quit, 30+ seconds. Fabulous wine. (548 views)
Tasted by kstoddard on 6/28/2009 & rated 93 points: Bright yellow hue. Petrol nose. Tastes of melon, orange, apple, lemon and spice box. Very well balanced. Medium bodied. Rich elegant finish with much complexity. Outstanding. (818 views)
Tasted by mouton45 on 6/21/2009 & rated 90 points: With New Orleans style barbecue shrimp. It cut through a sea of butter nicely (822 views)
Tasted by EyeDoc on 5/26/2009 & rated 90 points: Honey, grapefruit, flowers, honeysuckle, citrus. Nice minerals and nice finish. Nothing not to like. (931 views)
Tasted by thirtyoneknots on 5/15/2009: A fabulous, mature, bone dry example of cerebral Alsatian terroir. Took a little while to open up but this baby really sang. Austere minerality, racy acidity, notes of fruit (apple and pear) skins and a subtle nuttiness I've noticed in the wine before (think pecan or walnut skin). The more it opened up the more petrolly the nose became along with an oily viognier-like texture (though still with the tremendous acidity) and a finish that just wouldn't quit. Mind-blowing that wine this good can be made in an "off" vintage. Intensely delicious by itself and a home run with seared duck breast. Anyone who still thinks Riesling can be dismissed as kid wine would be truly and utterly silenced by one sip of this. One for the ages. (954 views)
Tasted by La Grappe on 3/18/2009 & rated 85 points: Decent enough lime-scented fruit, with medium weight, but not the structure of some other vintages of this wine. Lacks a bit of definition, and is beginning to oxidise slightly. Perhaps this would have been better a few years ago, but is not as fresh as I would have expected. (1142 views)
Tasted by Anonymous on 10/2/2008 & rated 88 points: Light in color with mild diesel on the nose and a bit of fruit. Light to medium body with high acidity makes for a very crisp mouthfeel. Lemon peel is prominant with green apple and other exotic tropicals. The finish is bracing and dry with a touch of diesel. Definitely a food wine. After nine years it's still holding up. (1230 views)
Tasted by limonadier on 9/22/2008 & rated 90 points: (993 views)
Tasted by Tavastgatan on 8/15/2008 & rated 92 points: (987 views)
Tasted by Mattshank on 7/18/2008 & rated 90 points: Nose: Rubber band quality that eventually burned off with some very subtle floral qualities. The nose is not yielding much now. Palate: Bone dry and crisp with tight acidity and a nice clean finish. It would be interesting to try this wine again in several years. (1281 views)
Tasted by Otto Nieminen on 6/25/2008: I have never found the '99 to be among the best recent vintages for CFE, yet it is still an extremely lovable wine: CFE for me seems to be one of the most consistently great wines. Lime, slightly crystallised, mineral; powerful but restrained and elegant palate, dry, quite high acidity, mineral and very, very long. "Only" good when compared to say the '01 and '02, but exquisite in comparison to most Riesling. Though it brought me pleasure it is very young and there is little point in opening one now.  Tasted by Quequeg on 4/30/2008 & rated 90 points: With take-out Chinese food (hey, a classical pairing is a classical pairing). Brought up from the cellar, then popped in the freezer for a couple of minutes before serving -- mistake! If I rated this when opened, it would have been an 84-85, tops. As it warmed and opened, though, it developed a terrific grapefruit backbone, but with honey and almost lavender notes above that and a mineral background that no citrus-filled Sauvignon Blanc would ever offer. Lemon on the finish; divine. Just terrific; a real surprise! (1692 views)
Tasted by Anonymous on 3/30/2008: After a corked bottle, a sound replacement. Still light color. Some early mature Riesling notes with faint tropical fruit in the background. Medium weight-this has fleshed out over time. As always, uncompromisingly dry, classic, and mineral infused. Very similar in style and quality to the Clos St. Hune from this year. Perhaps not one of the all time greats, but absolutely lovely. (1756 views)
Tasted by Mike Bates on 3/15/2008 & rated 90 points: I last had a bottle of this wine 2 years ago and in the intervening two years the tartness has softened a bit though it's still a very lively wine. It has a wonderful grapefruit and lemon nose with a long finish. It's added some Peach to the mid-palate and has exchanged the oak for a bit of petroleum and butter. (1760 views)
Tasted by Otto Nieminen on 11/14/2007: An elegant, mineral, lime-like nose - beautifully restrained yet still expressive of both grape and area. The palate is concentrated yet not very intense, but with good grip. A very nice wine, though it isn't a great CFE. (2279 views)
Tasted by TDV on 2/16/2007 & rated 92 points: Very good. Nice lime and petrol on the nose - bit of development. On the palate, high acidity, quite a bit of body - lovely creamy texture, lime, stone fruits, minerality. (2834 views)
Tasted by Otto Nieminen on 12/5/2006: Too young, but it did have a nice, expressive nose of lime and minerals - it is pleasantly austere and typical Trimbach. The palate is dry, acidic, balanced, but a bit closed. Maybe not the best CFE, but a perfectly decent one. (3193 views)

Tasted by kstoddard on 7/20/2006 & rated 91 points: (2572 views)
Tasted by VinoRico on 7/18/2006 & rated 92 points: Very nicely done. Petrol, lemon, and dry voulume. Well crafted classic Alsace Riesling. (3677 views)
Tasted by JBBridge on 6/22/2006 & rated 90 points: Drank with friends right out of cellar (55 degrees) witih no food, although we agreed it would pair well with a wide range of dishes. We had a bottle a couple of years ago, which was steely and bone dry then. This bottle was far more complex. Lemon, honey and lots of lychee nuts on the nose. Pineapple, grapefruit, lemon, flowers, warm honey on the palate, with minerals emerging in the medium-long finish. Acidity was balanced, but there's still some left. 10 bottles more, so we can watch this evolve for quite a while. I would probably chill slightly more the next time. For what it's worth, the 2000 was WS's Wine of the Year. Overall, the 1999 is a very enjoyable wine! (3380 views)
Tasted by Paul D on 5/26/2006 & rated 88 points: Medium lemon.
Medium intense nose with lime and floral notes and just a hint of petrol.
A medium bodied wine with cool, concentrated lime fruit, floral and honey notes on the mid-palate, and a hint of minerality befoer a lemon and lime dominated, crisp, extended finish.
Enjoyable, elegant wine, actually drinking nicely already (enjoyed without food) but with the concentration and backbone to show improvement over the next 5 years. (3599 views)
Tasted by Mike Bates on 4/21/2006 & rated 90 points: Nice crisp wine. Lemon and grapefruit nose with a bit of oak to it. Nice long tart finish, the lemon really comes through on the finish almost like a lemon drop. Very enjoyable. (3788 views)
