Drank side by side a 2017 O’Shaughnessy Mt Veeder, and I must say that the O’Shaughnessy was much better. The Dominus had moderate aromas of red cherry, cedar and graphite. The palate was muted with black cherry and a bit smoky, soft tannins and virtually a 5-second finish.

Even after 10 years in the bottle, the tannins seem young and need even more time to flex their taste buds. This bordeaux gets better each year with its ripe blackberry fruit but at the same time, with complex secondary flavors of mushroom, tobacco, licorice and cedar wood. There are hints of forest floor on the finish but I would call this wine earthy. Somehow each year this wine delivers new world fruit in a beautifully complex way unlike other wines from the Napa Valley.

Decanted for two hours and drink over another 2-3. Reminds me of many great 2014 Cabernets with deep and rich licorice and cassis notes. It was not reminding me of my favorite vintages of Dominus, at this stage. It lacks complexity and seems a bit less persistent than usual. Maybe time is needed. Will be back for more.

Very clean, polished, ultra smooth tannin feel. Intense fruit. Pleasantly singular, straight, not super complex at this stage or perhaps this vintage.
