Visits in Bordeaux; 9/18/2023-9/19/2023 (St Julien, Saint-Emilion, Pomerol): Though the nose is wound up a little bit, it still shows off its class as it fills the glass with baking spices, red cherries, blueberries, figs, some menthol, rose petals, chocolate, violets, and a bit of fresh herbs. There is a lot of depth and elegance here as it gets into the headier qualities of Merlot. The Medium/full bodied feel is refined and deep with medium acidity and silky, yet youthful, medium+ tannins. This is a drop dead gorgeous Pomerol that has many many years of great life ahead of it.

No notes taken. I expected this to be very open and offering lots of hedonism despite its youth. It wasn’t. It’s a very structured, muscular, young, dark brooding, minerality-driven Clinet that will probably need another 10 years to soften and open up. Interestingly, the fruit profile today is very much in the dark spectrum and will all its muscles, I would have easily guessed this to be a left bank. I’m not the biggest fan of Clinets latest vintages as I usually found them to be among the more extracted, riper right banks but this 2016 doesn’t show that. 91/92 today but certainly with more potential.
Decanting: Not decanted, followed over roughly 90 minutes with little change. Maybe a long decant would have helped.

Pnp from a very reasonably priced wine list. Dark garnet, Unlike many left bank 2016 which are very tight and closed at the moment, this is another right banker that is accessible and wide open. Still very fruit forward with plenty of baby fat. Good concentration of fruit and also nice freshness. Around 93 with clear upside so would wait at least another 3-4 years for the wine to show its best.
