  • Spectacular wine. Beautiful aromatics - so perfumed and red fruited with an array of other floral and lightly herbal/other savoury notes coming together into a fragrance that's hard to move away from. Shows equally well on the palate where there's remarkable clarity and finesse to the fruit, and a silky texture with very fine-grained tannin.

  • Dinner at Salil's: [Decanted about 3pm for 2 hours. Cork broke. Should have used the Durand.] Smells good! Around 7:30pm: Huge red berry nose. In the mouth, loads of red and black fruit. Still young, but starting to show some earth and forest. Long and complex. A winner with a long life ahead.

  • NK Monprivato Vertical (Chez Goldberg, Greenwich Village, NYC): [Double-decanted about noon.] Big bouquet of black fruit, tar, and roses. Still, a huge, young wine, with many years ahead. Seems younger than the last time I had it. A wow wine with a great future. 95-97

  • Double decanted in the AM and drunk over several hours at dinner.

Still tight at the beginning of dinner. Tar, iron, Ricola lozenges, and darker nebbiolo fruit. Structured and firm but eventually opening up into an impressive scaled classically proportioned wine. Great tension, detail and balance with a limestone minerality to it. A terrific youthful wine. I will hold my remaining bottles for another 5-10 years. Outstainding now and then some, but more is to come. 96

Rockss and Fruit

(Giuseppe Mascarello Monprivato) This was tight and closed. Clenching tannins on the first sip and a touch medicinal on the nose. The tannins gave way to lots of fruit but still were prominent. The fruit was dense and structured. Very '96. Never really came around but I did not give it the proper amount of time. Check back in 10 years. The most closed '96 I have had recently.
