Ornellaia Dinner (Stefani Prime - Lincolnwood IL): Alongside the 1982. Berry Brothers bottle. This had been opened ~5 hours earlier, but not decanted. Elegant and complex on all fronts, this showed enough mature black fruit, truffle, forest floor, braising spice, and so much more. Plenty of stuffing, plenty of enjoyment. A treat!

Decided to not decant, given the age. Brick red. Sweet, perfumed, assertive nose that is infused with stewed red fruits, cedar and earthy undertones. Sweet immediacy moves to stewed compote, baked apples, with cinnamon & a hint of vanilla & honey. Clearly in its sunset, but with a fairly long finish, and sustained through the entire bottle, it suggests a long, gradual runway from here.

At the Mandarin Grill in HK for a Palmer vertical. Served from Magnum. A not dissimilar nose to the '61 but not quite up to the same standard on the palate. The middle palate was fine but the finish was a little short. I suspect the bottles have probably seen better days but in magnum an enjoyable old fashioned claret.

Palmer was clearly on target in the 1960’s. With a nose filled with truffle, tobacco, plum, earth, cedar and spice box scents, there was a nice sense of refined, silky elegance in the wine. More than fully mature, It began to fade in the glass after 10 – 15 minutes. But it was a very nice 10 to 15 minutes.
