  • Dark, red rim.
Deeply fragrant, dark earthy spice, blueberry and plums.
Smooth but intense, strong tannins, lovely fine acidity. Licorice, tar, ink, blueberry essence, delicious fruit. Spicy blue fruit. Still youthful, structured for a long life.

  • Forceberry's notes nail it. This wine is fantastic. Decanted 6-7 hours. It was the last of a Tempier tasting (19 Bandol blanc, 17 rose, 13 rouge, 10 rouge, 08 Migoua). This wine had the most intense dark fruit, animale, tobacco, tar, but at the same time, it was really light and balanced, an elegance to the intensity.

  • The grapes are sourced from warm, low-yielding plots planted at low altitudes and thus protected from the Mistral wind. A blend of mainly Mourvèdre (~90%) with some Syrah and a little bit of Cinsaut. Fermented spontaneously with indigenous yeasts in concrete tanks. Macerated with the skins for 3-4 weeks. Aged for 18 months in large oak foudres. 14,5% alcohol.

Deep, dark and almost fully opaque blackish-red cherry color with a hint of developed reddish mahogany. The brooding nose feels complex, sweet-toned and slightly restrained with layered aromas of blueberries, some sweet licorice, a little bit of balsamic VA, light wizened forest fruits, a hint of crushed peppercorns and a juicy touch of vibrant red fruits. The wine is full-bodied, juicy and concentrated on the palate with rich flavors of dark fruits, meaty umami, some pruney tones, a little bit of peppery spice, light gravelly mineral tones, a hint of licorice and a developed touch of beef jerky. The wine feels bigger but also somewhat softer than the regular Bandol with its somewhat modest acidity and ample yet ripe, textural and powdery tannins. The finish feels ripe, somewhat heavy and very gently grippy with concentrated, fleshy flavors of meaty umami, some licorice, a little bit of plummy fruit, light notes of wizened black cherries, a hint of peppery spice and a touch of earthy garrigue. The high alcohol lends some warmth to the palate.

A rich, soft and textural Bandol with lots of weight and tons of fruit, but ultimately perhaps lacking a bit in the structure department - the one thing that really makes Bandol such a great style for me. The contrast with the Tempier Bandol 2011 was quite huge: while this wine felt weightier, chewier and fruitier in the style, the regular Bandol felt noticeably more impressive for me because of its impeccable sense of balance, more savory than sweet fruit flavors and noticeably higher acidity. This is a fine, rich and complex Bandol by all accounts, but perhaps lacking the distinction typical of Tempier that makes their wines some of the greatest in the whole region. Very enjoyable and thoroughly accessible stuff, but also rather pricey for the style at 67,50€.

  • Decanted and poured, this wine initially comes across as monolithic, large framed and brooding. Airing gives this wine a more accessible nature. This has begun to develop some subtle, underlying maturing notes. This drinks well now about 45 minutes after decanting and gives the impression that will become more accessible with additional bottle age.

  • Consistent with previous bottles. At this stage, the wine benefits from decanting and showed its best about 45 minutes after opening.
