  • Domaine Tempier, run by the Peyraud family since 1936, is now under the skilled management of the energetic and talented Daniel Ravier. With a legacy that includes the late Lucien Peyraud and his recently retired sons Francois and Jean-Marie, the estate produces five red cuvées: a classic Bandol created from a mix of terroirs, the signature cuvée Lulu & Lucien, and three single vineyards – La Migoua, La Tourtine, and Cabassaou. The smallest parcel, Cabassaou, rests beneath the Tourtine vineyard in a sheltered, warm terroir protected from the Mistral winds by stone walls.
The color is deep ruby with hints of purple. The nose is very dark with some soft gamey notes. The palate is dominated by ripe dark fruits – blackberries, blueberries, plum – accompanied by dark pepper, dried Mediterranean herbs, a soft meatiness, and some smoky earth notes. It is full bodied with a medium acidity. Tannins are beautifully ripe and velvety and are already integrated nicely. A powerful fruit structure with an impressive depth. It feels quite polished and shows a beautiful elegance. Excellent complexity and well-integrated alcohol. It has a pleasing overall balance and finishes long and savory.
Impressively powerful and youthful, there is no need to rush. Best enjoyed from 2025 to 2036. In my opinion it ranks among the finest reds Bandol and the whole Provence region have to offer. Unfortunately, the limited production for this cuvée makes it somewhat rare and difficult to find. (IG)

  • A pair of top Mourvedre wines: Undeveloped but shows tons of personality already. Pine trees, something salty, and a fair bit of reduction on the nose. Structured, extracted, linear palate, quite polished and elegant - a nod towards Bordeaux. Powerful but not forced, the texture is smooth, tannins are marked, but perfectly ripe. Oak is virtually unnoticeable and there is freshness to it's fruit aromas. This is a noble, aristocratic wine, built for the long haul.

  • Shows the most on the nose of among the Bandol, Migoua, and Tourtine, with light garrigue and dried herbs; beautiful dark depth and complexity, blackberry with a hint of pomegranate. As is usually the case, the Cabassaou isn't necessarily the "biggest" wine of the lineup, but displays the most complexity, and length. A wonderful wine in what promises to be an outstanding vintage.

  • 2016 Domain Tempier Reds (Dig Wines, San Francisco): Not as saturated as the Migoua, nor the amplitude in the mouth either. More of a blend of black fruit and earth than any of the other reds in the range, and perhaps the only one to have a hint of brett as well. Not head and shoulders above the others to be sure, and for my taste, a significant step behind the Migoua. Tannic and young.
