11/3/23, 11:15 AM - Thanks for the info; I will remember to check the cork on my next bottle
10/18/23, 6:53 AM - I tasted some JL Chavy on a trip to Burgundy earlier this year and I was also very impressed; I love the balance and freshness. Glad you enjoyed it!
10/22/23, 7:18 PM - Absolutely. I enjoy fishing also though I tend to wade fish the Gallatin River; if you get out here let me know, I'd love to open some wines!
9/28/23, 11:01 AM - I do drink a lot of red Burgundy, but I also drink a fair amount of Oregon pinot; I tend to drink lighter and more elegant producers in Oregon (Eyrie, Maresh, Kelley Fox, etc) and I don't really enjoy oak on wines in general (hence why I became a pinot drinker as I couldn't get past the oak on so many Cab/Bordeaux wines). I also drink a lot more whites than I used to; mainly white Burgundy, but a mix. I saved 1/2 the bottle of Thomas to revisit tonight so I'm curious to see what it shows
5/21/23, 6:40 AM - I think it is a very good wine and you would enjoy; though I have to say at the price, there are better wines out out there. I would maybe get some of the grand crus from Benoit Droin which are often around $90-100;, but either way if you get some I think you will enjoy
2/24/23, 6:50 AM - I agree that this is very enjoyable stuff, especially for the price. Also good to see someone else in MT who is enjoying good stuff!
2/26/23, 6:33 PM - Sadly like you, most of my sources come from out of state. Shipping is annoying especially since there are only a couple good windows weather wise, but that is where most of my stuff comes from. I will say that locally a place called Wine Gallery has definitely upped their game in the last year; new owner and some great stuff coming in including a lot of nice Kermit Lynch and Neal Rosenthal stuff and some great grower bubbly. Nate is the owner and its worth checking out. France/Italy are the strengths there. Also if you are ever in Big Sky, Hungry Moose deli has some good stuff, I have scored some pretty cool bottles from there randomly over the years.
1/10/23, 6:44 PM - Ha! What a great note and accurate closer. I've yet to have a bad bottle from Lamy!
1/7/23, 11:45 AM - Gotta love finds like that!
12/29/22, 11:30 AM - I completely agree; the purity and balance of Montevertine year in and year out is phenomenal. Its on my bucket list to try to taste there also! Glad it was good!
12/30/22, 6:28 AM - I have bought some of the '17, '18, and '19; so far only tried one of the '17 but it was very enjoyable. Not quite as ripe as the '15 and still in the classic mold you would expect; I also had several of the '18 Pian del Ciampolo which was delicious with pizza/pasta dinners. Hope that helps!
11/26/22, 6:59 PM - Brunier family are the people that own Vieux Telegraphe; I think this is part of their expanded portfolio.
9/19/22, 3:25 PM - Anthroman - I have drunk a lot of Eyrie over the years and they almost always age really well; I haven't had any sisters older than about 8 years, but I'd say this will sail for 8-10 easily and likely much longer depending on if you enjoy aged characteristics in pinot noir.
8/31/22, 7:54 PM - Thanks! I like Goodfellows pinots and chardonnays; never seen the riesling but I will look for it.
7/29/22, 4:36 PM - Thanks for the note, it was drank relatively quickly with sushi which also probably wasn't the best pairing. I have one more and will definitely let it open up or maybe just try to hold it for awhile.
4/16/22, 11:26 AM - DrWine - I definitely hope you are correct, I saved 1/2 the bottle to reassess tonight so I'll addend my note. Also, these are bottles that were purchased in the secondary market so I have no real knowledge of the initial storage conditions. Thanks for the comment
4/9/22, 8:28 AM - Correct; they are recorked with diam so a regular cork screw is fine as the corks are pretty much new. Enjoy!
3/3/22, 8:25 AM - Based on this showing, there is certainly no rush as this was super fresh and still has a lot to give!
2/21/22, 7:05 PM - I opened it about 30 minutes prior to serving; no decanting, just left in the bottle. Definitely drinking well, but certainly no rush based on this bottle.
1/25/22, 7:06 PM - I have not yet had the 2019 Clos Electrique. I anticipate it would be drinking well young also so I may try one in the next few months.
9/3/21, 9:20 AM - I totally agree. I think this may be the best value available in Champagne really.
8/23/21, 7:46 PM - Felix I tend to agree with you; based on my tastings (limited though they are in comparison to pros) I've had many more enjoyable wines from '02 and '10. I still wonder if the '05s will come around be great, but truly just need 25+ years to come around even for lower end wines; though I definitely wonder if the structure is going to outlast the fruit. Will be interesting to see. Thanks for the note.
4/20/21, 7:47 AM - Definitely was open and delicious from first cork pop so I'd say it is definitely ready to drink now; that said it also clearly has enough stuffing and concentration to evolve for a few years so I'd say you could do either and win.
4/14/21, 11:09 AM - There was still some fruit in the wine initially, but it was definitely mostly secondary and tertiary; the fruit was more in the dried currant and dried blueberry, but it was not the primary notes on the nose after about 30 minutes. That said I still found some fruit on the palate and overall I really enjoyed it.
4/15/21, 8:16 PM - I did not decant it; I opened it for about 45 minutes, then followed the bottle over about 3 hours; I did have to filter the last 2 glasses due to sediment; you could definitely decant to get it off the sediment, but I wanted to follow the bottle evolution at a slower pace
4/11/21, 7:29 AM - I found the magnum on Benchmark wine a couple of years ago. Only one I've ever seen.
3/25/21, 7:57 PM - This was had as an aperitif with castelvetrano olives and 12 month manchego and it worked beautifully!
8/8/20, 7:30 PM - Tough night with the white Burgundy... I get nervous every time I open a nice bottle of it these days. Hope the next 2 are better!
5/22/20, 7:21 PM - DC - I agree with you, I had a bottle of this 3 years ago and I was absolutely stunned by it; the density of the flavors, clear underlying power, yet weightless feel was incredible. I finally bought some for the cellar so I'm glad to hear it is still singing!
5/18/20, 8:59 PM - Couldn't agree more; I haven't sampled the 2018 yet, but every year I set out to find a better rose than Tempier and every year I come back thinking Tempier is still the one I enjoy the most!
5/15/20, 6:52 PM - SRH that is correct; a little too buttery and round, lacks a little tension/vibrancy for my personal palate.
4/21/20, 8:14 PM - Thanks for the note. I have had the Goodfellow and Cameron and agree they are killer as well. Will definitely look for some of the other producers you mentioned!
12/7/19, 7:45 PM - I had a couple of the Livera wines while in Burgundy in 2018 and all were very good. I brought back several bottles and haven't sampled again, but I'm looking forward to them. I think this is an up and coming domaine and he is apparently very good friends with Arnaud Mortet. Glad to hear it was enjoyable!
10/21/19, 8:17 PM - I can't agree more. "Off" vintages are not only often more drinkable (at least before age 30), they are much better values and provide as much if not more enjoyment because the stellar vintages are so overhyped they just can't live up to it.
10/4/19, 9:58 AM - I agree with you. I don't get this wine either, seems totally overwhelming and unpleasant and I'm not sure I can ever really see it harmonizing. And I've tried older vintages including a 2005 last year and felt the same.
8/13/19, 8:39 PM - I've also had several bottles of Leroy Bourgogne that have had evidence of seepage, but no significant issues with the wines which makes me think it must be overfilling. In fact, both of the bottles of 09 I've had were like that as were 2 bottles of 03. Maybe the bottling machine was off? Glad the wines were still good at least!
6/26/19, 8:07 AM - My experience with Monte Bello, albeit limited, is that these wines don't really start to shine until 20-25 years of age. I recently had a 2003 that was clunky, oaky, and not great. Clearly needed more time. I think 10 years is really still the infancy here so if you can I'd try to find some older ones from the '80s or early 90s.
2/17/19, 8:01 PM - John - I have not tried the 2016 of this wine (though I have it on my radar to buy), but my experience with the 2016 white Burgundies thus far is that they are overall better than the '15s. This wine I thought was excellent given the ripeness of the 2015 vintage as it did not seem heavy at all, but the few 2016's I've tried have great freshness while retaining great concentration and energy. I don't think you can go wrong either way!
11/20/18, 5:41 PM - Interesting that you got very little fruit from this; I recently had a 2008 Mongeard Echezeaux (not Grands, just the regular Ech) that was incredibly primary with nothing but fruit and little else in regards to complexity; maybe decanting the smaller volume split missed some of the fruit?
9/8/18, 9:52 PM - Mark - no decant, I opened it about an hour before dinner; served with grilled ribeyes; in retrospect, I probably would have decanted for 45-60 min, but it was still tasty with none. I think for me, this will be better in 4-5 years
7/30/18, 8:10 PM - Thanks for the comment; what I truly meant was that there are many other wines in Burgundy comparable for 1/2 the price of the Rousseau, but I do think that Serafin, Bruno Clair, and Faiveley all make Cazetiers that is as good for quite a bit less. Make no mistake, the Rousseau wines are excellent, but at least for me buying the retail market, the wines are excessively priced (I've looked for the 2015 and yet to find it cheaper than $400)
3/28/18, 3:48 PM - You are correct that at $55ish this would be a better value; I think I paid $80 which is too much. Still I enjoy the Chartogne-Taillet Cuvee St Anne, Pierre Peters Blancs de Blancs, and Andre Clouet Brut Grand Reserve more than this and they are all still under $55. I also used to get the Roger Coulon Brut 1er Cru for around $45 which I think is as good if not a little better. That being said I'd certainly buy this again if I could get it for $55 instead of $80.
2/25/18, 8:12 PM - That is brutal to have a corked Mascarello... my condolences
12/6/17, 8:14 PM - The other one I think shows consistently Burgundian is aged Eyrie; especially the Original Vines and Daphne Vineyard.
11/2/17, 7:38 AM - I hope you are right on this; I had very high hopes for this wine, but it almost seemed flawed to me initially with very odd and unpleasant aromas; I agree with you that the underlying core was impressive with excellent depth and vibrancy. I'm hoping that smell was either specific to that bottle or will resolve over more time. Guess I'll wait several years to try again!
9/5/17, 10:26 PM - I've had similar experience with these wines and found the oak essentially obliterates everything when young (by which I mean <15 years) but I also had one that was much better at about 18 years; I decided to try to age them 20+ years minimum so we will see if that helps.
8/11/17, 10:24 PM - Sounds like a great wine to try. I had a similar experience with the '90 last year; its incredible how well these Eyrie pinots age and yet are so delicious young!
2/17/17, 6:27 AM - Based on its performance last summer, I'd say yes. I'm planning to wait on my other bottle for at least 2-3 years.
5/4/14, 11:16 AM - Thanks for the info. I will try to find another Clare Valley to give a shot. They are a little hard to find in my area. I'll try the next one with no German stuff in comparison.
1/6/14, 11:24 AM - Thank you for the note, I will certainly plan to keep several of these for the long haul. I look forward to tasting again in 10 years or so!
5/22/13, 9:10 PM - I think the Guigal will keep for at least another 2-3 years. It was still fairly young and I decanted it for 30 min. As far as other classic northern Rhone syrahs, Rene Rostaing Cote Rotie is excellent, very traditional. Jean Louis Chave Hermitage is absolutely stunning. Also Domaine Jamet and Ogier make outstanding Cote Rotie.
Thanks for letting us know about this problem. We will review your comments and be in touch soon with an update.
