Lunch at 67PM: Very divisive wine and served as a stark contrast to the Baudry alongside. Ripe, sweet and plummy, the nose was dominated by the sweet vanilla from the American oak. Some loved it but I belonged to the camp who hated it. Based on track record, the wood will probably integrate but this was undrinkable for me now.

From double magnum. No detailed notes taken. This was disappointing. I expected the wine to be like the regular 750 bottle was on release: fresh, pure blue and dark forest berries, floral aromas, complex earthy and herbal notes to compliment, not too much ripeness, creamy yet weightless, elegant and fine (I rated it up to 97 pts on release). Unfortunately, this showed very ripe, overripe and raisiny (which I don’t like at all). The structure was still impeccable, the complexity and precision were on a good level. It improved a bit with air but always stayed in that raisiny/overripe category. It didn’t feel like the same wine, to be honest. I will try to open another 750 to check if this was just an off bottle or if the 2016 vintage really is on a bad path. This was rather undrinkable.

Decanting: Not decanted, followed over four hours. Improved a bit with air. This would have needed 1-2 hours, ideally. Not sure what the normal 750 bottle needs at this moment.

christmas dinner (at our home): On the bottle it says that this was bottled in 2013, I am not really sure about the various entries for the wines of Duorum here, but would just for the record state that this was probably the best port I've had. Dense, yet light on its feet with good acidity and harmonious seamless fruit and wonderful texture that never gets cloyingly sweet nor harsh and bitter from tannic structure. This drinks so well now but has the makings for a century worth of storing it feels like.

Deep ruby in color and luscious from the get-go, this blend of 80% Grenache, 15% Mourvèdre and 5% Cinsault flaunts aromas of dark bramble fruits, dried cranberries, mulling spices, Provençal herbs and white pepper. Medium-to-full-bodied, freshly acidic and with nicely integrated alcohol (14.5%), it delivers flavors mirroring the nose. The oak and tannins are well-woven and the middle palate stays solid. Lengthy and smooth on the back end, this is a hedonistic Châteauneuf that is a reflection of Santa Duc's commitment to quality. Enjoy it throughout the decade. Drink now-2030.

This is how I like my Malbecs! Raised in concrete egg but still fruity and structured, there is more of an emphasis on licorice root tea, violets, black cherries, fresh blueberries from the north and maybe a touch of raw meat as well. Lovely grip and freshness, this was poured from a Magnum (two magnums in fact) and I think it's a real keeper.

Unusual varietal? Always up for novelty. After all, isn’t that what drinking wine is all about? Bring it on. But first – oh, my dear God… please, please get rid of the wax on the neck; it’s totally unnecessary - someone is gonna get hurt...

This is a step up from their usual Cinsault – super floral on the nose – like Grandma’s potpourri. However, it subsides with time to reveal wild raspberry, green leaves & sweet gummies.

Lively on the plate – but also herbaceous & tart. Could use more time in the cellar, but it is balanced now…so it will be so then, too. I bet with time; you dial down the fruit & amp up the wood notes. Finish is long.

Drink with a slight chill for best results. 😊

Eben Sadie: The Swartland Revolution (Zoom!): Almost 100% Tinta Barocca. ES says it’s a great grape for long-term wines, and combines some of the attributes of Syrah and Nebbiolo, but has fallen out of fashion. Vines date from 1974.

Much darker in colour than wines #1 and #2, but still definite clarity. A little shy, but obviously clean and immediately enjoyable. Takes a lot of air to get going, but then the similarity to Nebbiolo starts to become apparent: violets, dark berry jam, and a lifted, aromatic quality with hints of things like menthol and caraway.

Drank over three days. With a 100 point WA score, and 97 from WS, for $79.99 at Costco, had to try it.

First impression: Gorgeously fragrant, downright sexy! Blended red, blue, and purple berry liqueur-like perfume, along with seductive floral notes. Head-turning and knee weakening! Among the most enchanting Vintage Port perfumes I have encountered.

Next impression: While otherwise technically excellent and true to place, the middle and bass substance cannot approach the perfume's quality level. With such vaunted scores, these elements, at this young stage in the wine's life, should present like impenetrable, granite and metallic ore mud. Case(s) in point, like most 2011 Vintage Ports upon release in 2014. Also, several wines of that hallowed vintage present as red wines that just happen to be sweet, which is not the case here. Also noteworthy: the second, and especially the third day, revealed a bite at the back.

Any detraction? Well, what wine making technique often results in high fragrance and back-end bite? Over extraction!...which seems to be the case here.

In several recent notes, particularly regarding so many blackberry and vanilla perfumed, but otherwise soulless and placeless 2016 Left Bank Bordeaux offerings, I have written of a pro reviewer trend to score wines based on ripeness and prettiness, hallmarks of the celebrated, or revolting, depending upon viewpoint, 'International' style. This would seem to be the case here. This aside, this drinks more like Vintage Port than most 2016 Left Bank Bordeaux drink like Left Bank wines. Thus, I prefer this massively overstated wine, compared to those.
  • adamanko commented:

2/22/21, 9:28 PM - So... as an inexperienced port drinker, but really having a hard time with high level of concentration, or over extraction, in ordinary wines, should stay away from this wine?

Day 3: Just a little sip but no doubt, this is great. Over 90 for sure.

Day 6: Start to get som raisin now. But still fab. Rich, full-bodied, intense but still elegant. 93

Day 7: Probably at its best so far. Choc and coffee and a sweetness that perfectly balances the french chocolate cake. Upping grade to 94.

Day 8 and I'm thinking of upping the grade to 95. Will finnish the bottle tomorrow and decide then. Just getting better and better.

Day 9 and the finale. And when I came to the end of the bottle it was so much sediment I couldn't really concentrate on the flavours. So 94 stands, but it is a strong 94.

Too much vanilla. Lots of fruit upfront but Lacking on the midpalate. Somewhat short.

Edit: After three years in the closet this showed a lot of prunes/raisin. A taste I do not appreciate much. Got better with chocolate. 88

10/21/20, 11:35 PM - Yes I will try at least. First I should clarify that I don't store my wines in perfect condition. So if you have a perfectly tempered wine cellar my findings might not relate to you.

But after almost three years in semi-perfect conditions this showed a lot of raisin/prune, a taste that I do not appreciate in my wine, and something I tend to find in wines after they been stored for a longer period of time.

So this I tend to call over the top. Since I'm fairly new in this I don't really know if it's a phase. I hope this made things clearer. :)

Mörkfruktig, lite karamell
Hög syra, mörkfruktig även i smaken, vanilj, svartpeppar, långt avslut. Känns som en bdx-blend, men kommer rätt mycket vanilj och ny ek efter mer tid i glaset. Gillade det här förvånansvärt mycket

The acidity is the first thing I notice. This has a lot. Smooth in the mouth. A small bitterness. I don't know but I expected some funk but there is none. Some alcohole. I think this probably should get some more time. 90 for now.
  • adamanko commented:

9/24/20, 9:47 PM - I do too. But I do think you should wait for this. A bit all over the place right now.

  • adamanko commented:

9/27/20, 9:37 PM - Maybe. Could be other things to. Like bottle variation. Like our different preferences.

Depth in flavors, velvety mouthfeel, complex, elegant. This is just up my alley. 2 year in the closet and this could be peaking now. Probably the best wine I've ever had. 95-96.

9/24/20, 9:24 PM - Nice to see. Thanks for info. :) Now I don't know when to drink this. It was so good now maybe I should not wait for my other bottle. But then again, if I drink it I will never have it again... :D

Taking one glass direct from the opened bottle. Dark concentrated fruit. Cherry for sure but also tar and liqourice. Nothing extra at this point.

Waits for several hour and nothing much happened. Raisin evolved. That is NOT my favorite taste in a wine. Right now this is really bad QPR but maybe it will mature. 88.

A quite different wine. From what? From every expectation of what Spanish wines are about. The colour is the first surprise: extremely light red, almost like a rose-wine. It also has a somewhat bleak tone, far from any brilliant colour tones. The smell is also somewhat surprising, with a dominance of very acid, almost tart, red berries like red currant and somewhat unripe raspberries. Underneath, a clear mineral, iron-like tone. Then the mouth surprises even more. Although it is highly acid, it is also quite sweet. The fruit converges towards more ripe raspberries and strawberries, the tannins are very smooth, and the freshness is well balanced by the sweetness of the fruit. Long, almost Burgundy-like in its sweet lightness. Drunk with grilled kid, a match almost made in heaven as the wine kind of expanded in the encounter with the light, but savoury meat. A beautiful wine.

3-4 hour decant and then I get sloeberries, lingonberries and plum. Tobacco and pepper comes around as well. It's good now and has life in it. Maybe even get better? 90.
  • adamanko commented:

6/13/20, 1:38 PM - Hard to say as I didn't taste it at opening. I had one a year ago that was totally closed day 1 so that could suggest that the decant helped.

Magnificant straight put of the bottle, with beautiful light transparent red colour and wonderful nose. Fruity, balanced on the palate with many layers. Fresh. However, after a couple of hours it falls a little apart, and the last sip is not as interesting as the first. Wonder why. I have another two bottles to check out.

I brought it to a small dinner party and it was a success. One said it was the best champagne she ever had and every one was really appreciative. Around 90 maybe?

A fun inexpencive champagne to try out if you curious about how mature champagne taste like.

More power than elegance. Still too young. A good wine but not my favourite. 90.

Edit: Tasted -12 a few months prior and that was much more ready and more to my liking. Hence me opening this. Should have waited two years maybe?
  • adamanko commented:

5/19/20, 9:33 PM - I don't mind you asking. :) I would give it at least two years. Tasted -12 a few months ago and that was much more ready imho.

Dark and heavy profile initially with black fruit, tar, licorice, soil and burnt notes. Needs air and time in glass to find balance. Vanilla, dust, blueberry, coffee, dark chocolate, blackberry and roasted aromas appear gradually. Rich and dense mouthfeel, high fruit concentration, coffee and early notes comes through on the palate. Loads of oak. Too young, bury in cellar, powerful wine that will last for decades! 50/50 Cab/Syrah. Quality much higher than my 87p score.
