I can't say much that others below haven't said, but if like me, you like your wines just slightly on the young side so the acids are still present to complement fatty foods, the 2016 Produttori is ready for its close-up.

I've been drinking my bottles over the last year and only have a couple left. Of course I wish I bought more!

This is just perfectly balanced, with acids, integrated tannins and such a depth and intensity of flavor for a lighter-bodied wine, it exemplifies what makes barbaresco barbaresco.

Great with food. Roast chicken, roast pork, fatty pastas like carbonara or cacio e pepe, this complements them all superbly.

My single vineyard Produttoris await in the cellar. Maybe 2026?

Super-old wine. Transparent medium brown color. Intense aromas of nuts, green olives, caramel, raisins, coffee, butter. Very intense, very long, high acidity.

2016 Ridge Lytton Springs Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel Blend, Zinfandel
Bought multiple bottles directly from the winery upon release as member of the Zin Club. I remember this year being very tight, as most baby Lytton Springs are.
Rested upright for 3 months, and decanted off sediment leaving a glass and a half in the bottle 5 hours before tasting.

Not much nose to report except for some very faint blackberry, licorice and even less, essences of earth.

Palate, however was exquisite!
The lushness of the juice delicately tumbled over my tongue, something of a perfect spot for this cuvée. All kinds of complexities engaged and challenged my detection skills: Garigue, licorice, Christmas spices, perfect acid, delicate spice cakes with hidden but enough to pull out cinnamon, nutmeg and quality tight knit wood.

I’ve got Lytton Springs verticals in my cellar going back a decade. These wines for most years need at least 7 years bottle age to show and can stay in that sweet spot for twenty, though most would not allow that much time in bottle. 2016 was a drought relief year, and this is an interesting contrast to 2015.

The iconic label looked magnificent in front of a warm living room fire, and if I had to do this again I would wait for Christmas to open, as this with roast duck, or broiled rare ribeye would be fantastic for celebratory times with family who are not oenophiles. (Keep the 1996 Barolo hidden for ourselves!)

A fresh pour from decanter now 7 hours after decant smells more and more like Christmas season as the cakes with tart berry fit perfectly. Each swig had energy, was soft, luxuriously imparted smoke, gingerbread, boysenberry and memories of seasonal times past.

Add this to your holiday meal lineup, decant at noontime, keep ½ glass for yourself and pour the rest for others who don’t fully appreciate the depth of your cellar. This will woo your guests as you tell about the Taste Of Paris and why you opened it for this meal. (My Bruno Giacosa 2001 Serralunga D’Alba stays in my own belly!)

As this opened more and more of the oak started to show, and totally did not want to drink anymore. This is for others. Not for me. I’ve got to now hit the cellar again to find something else to open. Gotta remember not to drink any more Ridge, but only pour for others. So much time had past since the last bottle that I forget to remember! My bad.

In fact, at this point I just gotta say "UG! OAK! DOUBLE UG!"

Truly salty and worth the higher price
I wish I could drink this all the time but the price makes it a bit more of an occasional treat. There's clear briny salt on both the nose and the palate, but the floral and caramel notes are stronger yet. It's complex, sweet and delicious from start to finish. The sea-aging seemed like a party trick when I first heard of it but I've loved every pour of this I've had over the years.

Hmmm... Looking back on my old notes, I must have really enjoyed this, but this particular bottle was quite pruney. Purchased at retail from the same lot as the others, it's highly extracted, with dense licorice notes, raisined like Amarone, high in alcohol, with some RS and a lengthy finish; but one I didn't totally love. Hoping this is bottle variation.

Outstanding! Like a young lady entering her 20’s , the wine is reaching its prime. Firm, supple with a dash of wit. Fresh cedar, great aromatics and a nice finish. Years of advancement ahead, but if you are seeking a prime time Bordeaux— here it is!

Night two

Drier, smooth and no rough edges. The fruit is far more muted and the finish lacks the strength of last night. I miss the fresh power it showed last night….

Consumed over 2 days (stored in Somm du Vin), note from day 2. Appearance: Clear, medium garnet. Nose: Clean, medium+ intensity with aromas of dried herbs, ripe raspberry patch, sour cherry, and rose bush - the dynamics between the green herbal and lush fruit and flowery notes is captivating. Palate: Dry, medium+ acid, medium tannin, medium body, medium+ intensity, and 14.5% abv with flavors of spicy red fruit, tomato leaf, and herbs with a medium+ finish. Compared to day 1 this has blossomed much more fleshed out and giving on day 2. Needs a long decant if opening today, likely 2-3 years from peak and should drink well for 3-5 after that. Wonderful wine.

This is my first time sitting down and concentrating on a Nerello Mascalese dominated blend from Sicily's Etna Rosso DOC - I need to try more.

Alcohol and stewed/baked fruit on the nose. No freshness. 2015 was the same. Shows all of its 15.5% alcohol. Ripe fruit sweetness, but the alcohol dominates and the baked notes not to my taste. Seems like a relic from the Parkerized wines of the early 2000s. Pass on this producer in the future.

My first bottle of the 2012, this (Lotto VV12A) was decanted three hours before dinner. I was unable to take detailed notes. The wine has all the typical rustic character of Calabretta’s NMVV, outstandingly complex aromatics, and an excellent acid and tannin backbone despite the 16% alcohol. The alcohol level is not, remarkably, perceptible at that level, less noticeable, for example, than a 14-15% Grenache from the Southern Rhone that I had recently. Several decades of pleasure await those with bottles in the vellar. Outstanding QPR.

  • Vinomazing commented:

11/4/22, 10:20 PM - Hi…condolences on the passing of Max, RIP. You may have to do this vertical in his honor one day. That would be amazing, a wine celebration with 11 vintages. I am sure he would smile down at that!

Have yet to try 2012, loved all vintages tried so far and have 2007, 2010 (fav so far) & 2012 tucked away. This wine is calling to taste, and they usually have it at an annual tasting in NJ about to hit this Monday. Pretty hyped, then I can taste and grab some more and pop 1 without a thought.

Hope the famz reunion went well!

  • Vinomazing commented:

11/7/22, 11:22 PM - So, sadly there was no Calabretta at this year’s tasting :(…the store did not get an allocation of. But I talked to the distributor who was there showing other wines. He says 2010 was atypical in style…unusually lighter and classy compared with other vintages. Whereas 2012 is more typical, darker more brooding and masculine, back to a norm. I am getting the feeling this winemaker does not put out any bad vintages and each can differ because he is not under DOC’s control, that is amazing he can do different things each year to get the best results he deems and not the DOC. He supposedly was a well established wealthy professor who inherited his grandfather's vineyards and winery, so he does not do this for the $, more for the love of wine. Cheers Paul!

Had to try on as I’ve bought a lot and wanted to see where this starts. Slow oxed for 24 hrs then into a decanter for another 8. Crazy nose of cherries, crushed stone, lavender, roses, burnt orange, and hay. Still tannic but a really beautiful balanced mouthful of dark fruits, chocolate, dust, cherries, and a nice sweet top note. Still very very young and I won’t touch these again for a minimum of 10-12 years so it can develop. This will be a truly great wine in time and I hope to follow it for 20-25 years. Wow.

That is a mouthful as well. Composed and bursting at the seams with rich, yet perfectly dry dark fruits, ribbons pine and bark running throughout. This wine manages that beautiful trick of presenting as dry and dusty while simultaneously being bold and juicy and herbal.

I am quite impressed after a few hours open this wine is hitting its stride and aiming for the fences.

First bottle of a 6-bottle case and ultimately a bit disappointing. This will be good but just way too young on this showing. Paired with rib-eye steak and we also opened a 2007 Barolo from another (less heralded) estate which was in a much better more developed place. Probably an unfair comparison! Will leave the other bottles a good while before trying again. Did get better on day 2 after a good few hours in the decanter!

This is really some high-level Barbera for the price.

Deep ruby color and the nose was full of red and dark berries; black cherry, blackberry, chokeberry, redcurrant and raspberry accompanied by oak, spices, vanilla tobacco and a little earthiness.

Palate gave the same both red and dark berries with a beautiful fruity acidity to it. Tannins were medium and it's a wine with some power to it yet it also feels light and playful. Oak, forest floor, leather, pepper, herbs and spices giving it that beautiful edge.

Wow this was tight; I don't normally drink Gouges young, but I thought maybe the velvet 2015 fruit concentration would make this approachable; I was wrong; the nose was tight and grudgingly revealed ripe red fruits and earthy humus, a hint of violet; the palate was wound up as tight as a drum; I can feel the potential, but the tannins are keeping the fruit under wraps; that said there is plenty of acidity as well; I left 1/2 the bottle to re-visit tomorrow.

Definitely improved on night 2; the nose shows classic NSG earthy and underbrush, the fruit is a bit riper and there are some spice and herb notes; the palate is also much more open, but there is still substantial structure; the acidity remains juicy and quite fresh for the vintage. I'd say if you must drink this now, give it as long a decant as you can; otherwise I think 5-7 more years in the cellar will be good and it will likely drink well for another 2 decades.

Black pepper, licorice, dense blackberry, black cherry, and pencil shavings on the palate with a lingering 35-40 sec finish. This one felt like an expression of a great Napa vineyard through a French lens. It is similar to the Fait Main style but a little more restrained and subtly elegant. Had this bottle at a local restaurant along with a 2018 Maybach Materium. While the Materium was wonderful and fruit abound, the Myriad was more intense and classically structured. I slow oxed both for an hour before dinner. Both wines were open when I popped the cork. The group preferred the Myriad. A great combination showed off the winemaking styles. The others never had a wine like the Materium so my guess is that they gravitated to the more Myriad style. It is easy to give both wines a 96 to 97 depending on your preference. I’ll go with 98 on the Myriad and 97 on the Materium. I wish I had bought more as this was my only bottle.

This was opened up by a wino friend and had been decanting (mostly slow-ox) for about 24 hours. A nice GSM blend that has sweet roasted purple and black youthful fruit, roasted nuts, cinnamon spice, with a hefty chalky and fire roasted tannic finish. Definitely a crowd pleaser. After having the Mourvedre last night (this one a bit before that), I can see the Mourvedre influence with the sweet purple fruit is most certainly here. A very massive wine and I guess I will sound like a broken record when I say that this one really would benefit from laying it down a few years even after knowing that it was open for the last 24 hours and taken care of quite well. However, it was really neat to see this one develop over an hour or so. Drink or hold!

This is just about the best (off-) dry Riesling (RS 13 gr/l) I have ever drunk from the Mosellle, and that includes all the wines I have tasted from Clemens Busch and Reinhard Löwensteyn. The palpable minerally depth and energy are second to none, and they are paired with honeyed richness and gently grippy bitters. The varietal and terroir expression are flawless, and there is a certain authority to this wine, a certain majesty which is very difficult to express. "Ruht in sich". I have no words.

This has quickly become one of the wines that I look forward to most over the last few years. Always so energetic and mineral with an ability to really punch above its weight class.
I enjoyed this bottle over two days and really loved watching the evolution. Initially this showed such great light footed purity, a characteristic that seems to be common with 2021s. Notes of lemon, complimented by navel oranges and great salinity, with a ginger infused mineral water freshness that was so alluring. This nose had an intoxicating perfume of lemongrass that made this such a pleasure.
On day two this continued where if left off with notes of candied lemon, a lively tingle of acidity, salty minerality with a long and tangy finish. This was wonderfully piquant and lip smacking. The trick now is to keep my hands off the rest of my bottles..

Bordeaux tasting - with a few pirates: This was drinking rather beautifully, perhaps much in part to its handler’s decanting protocols prior to arrival. Bravo for that! Medium bodied flavors of red raspberries, cedar, earth, old cinnamon stick, plum skin, and iron parallel notes of unsmoked cigar, leather, and torched orange peel. Balls up a bit on the finish, with a firmness that keeps it in classical mode, not allowing the fruit (what remains of it) to fully give way. I sensed a slight bit of funk here, but nothing that didn’t blow off with some swirling in the glass.

The 2015 Cases was served beside it, which I personally favored, though the 2015 was pretty strait-laced for most of the evening.

Bordeaux tasting - with a few pirates: Consistent. Consistent. Consistent. The slow build on this wine over time really spoke to me. I kept coming back to this bottle. It wasn’t too flashy. It wasn’t too classic. It was a beautiful hybrid of old and new worlds. Purple plum and black raspberry saunter arm-in-arm with deep cherry, currant, cedar, and Christmas spice notes. The equilibrium of flavor and the balanced expansion really take this to the next level. A tick up from my last bottle back on 8/30/2019. One of the few 2016s I’ve had recently that aren’t crawling into a corner, the Cos is a drink now (a decant might have made this even more alluring) or hold for another decade and check it out then. I’ll try to hold my remaining bottles until then…. Good luck with that though…

Bordeaux tasting with some Napa outsiders (The Embrace of Silence): Aromas of gentle red fruits but still stands firm, sliced cranberries and deep forest floor.

Flavors reflect on the nose with the addition of spiced fruits, oak and lifted minerals.

I might prefer this one compared to the younger sibling we had but that's due to the younger sibling leaving me a bit frustrated. Maybe I'm starting to like older wines, whad'ya know?

Four hour decant. Deep dark, yet bright, magenta color. Plum, raspberry, Russian tea cake, blueberry, almond extract, and peony on the nose. There are also subtle notes of truffle, mushroom, and dark chocolate. Smooth, tongue drying palate, with satiny acidity. Full, round, medium intensity tannins on the longish finish.

This kept improving over an hour of drinking. It’s complex, demure, and refined. Very much a Bordeaux-leaning Napa Cab, but only in good ways. This is as good as you can do at this price.

Bordeaux and Beyond (The csimm_M Estate): Brought by the ever generous A_M as one of his 3 outstanding wines (the wagyu beef and caviar didn’t suck, either). On the nose and palate, moderate to light notes of black currants, cherries, cassis and mixed red fruit, dark florals, mixed spice and earthy minerality. Medium to deep ruby, medium bodied, thick legs. Medium+ acidity, medium tannins, well-integrated and fairly silky. VG complexity and persistence, good intensity. I know A_M said that this took some time to come to heel, but by the time he arrived at csimm’s, this was drinking with elegance and sophistication, with notable balance among its elegance. The ever so gentle Yin (12.5%) to the cacophonous Yang of the ringer ‘19 Maybach Materium also in A_M’s bag of tricks, this wine nails its spec and could be the illustration of what I think of a classic LB BDX. I’m not sure I had it with any of our culinary fair, but it has enough acidity on the one hand and gentleness on the other to work with most food, yet its balance makes it outstanding on its own. Held solidly during the several hours it was open making it likely it has many years of quality drinking ahead. Not what I’m in the mood for all the time, but really good stuff for when I would be. 95-96

In my cellar since release. Double decanted and taken to a friend’s house for dinner with a roasted Berkshire pork rib rack. The wine is a translucent medium garnet color with no bricking whatsoever. Very youthful in every way except that it is silky on the tongue. The nose and palate are dominated by distinct green peppercorn and ripe plum. I found it gorgeous. Very mid-weight and feminine and elegant. So full of flavor with some secondary notes of red florals, menthol and cedar but I really loved the dominant flavors which went so well with the sweet pork.

Possibly Will Harlan's first commercial release in any significant quantities, if 2,000 cases is many!

Officially the 3rd vintage release of The Mascot, whilst previously it was simply a pet project for friends and family. Amazing experience to be able to have a library collection bottle airflown from Harlan Estate, I simply could not find another bottle for sale anywhere.. Enjoyed glass after glass or this at the Mascot event in St Regis KL.

Yes, of the flight of 2010-2013-2017 this was the best, but not by a huge margin as many in our group also loved the 2013. This 2010... was complex with resolved tannins, graphite nose and long finish!

The Mascot comes from grapes which are from vines that most likely will eventually be used in the Grand Vins such as Harlan Estate, BOND or Promontory wines, once the vines reach sufficient maturity.

Bernice Cheng (Domain H. William Harlan, Oakville Napa Valley) told us that each of the wines are kept separate at each respective winery before the final Mascot blend is formed. The Mascot wine is aged 5 years before release unlike many other Napa offerings.

Learned from our conversation all evening with Bernice Cheng that this was a cool vintage unlike the drought like and hot 2013.

In fact the winemaker notes describes 2010 as one of the coolest years in recent memory. The growing season began late, and extra diligence and care were required of the team at every stage during leafing, thinning and harvest. The harvest was sufficiently long to allow careful selection and picking only when the grapes ripened!

👃 Cherries and yes... Graphite and pencil shavings, lovely. Violets and blueberries after 2 hours too. ⏳️ Bernice (Harlan) and Nick (Milawa) showed restraint in decanting this 1-2 hours, and recommended slow oxing this in our glass over the night. Beautiful way of opening up this wonderful wine!
😛 Black cherries and wonderful balance and poise with a confident backbone, nicely resolved tannins and long finish with chocolate too.
⏲️ Approaching its sweet spot but can certainly approach again 3-5 years.

Bedrock/Bedrock is arguably my favorite of Morgan's lineup, and also one of the Cuvées that I feel demands the most bottle age. While I enjoyed this 2016, it still felt fairly tight to me.....which is more/less what I expected. Better on day 2 where i got more of the dusty red fruits and citrus/orange note on the finish that I expect from this Vineyard. Just checking in on some 2016s and I think they, for the most part, need more time. I'll definitely be keeping my hands off my remaining Bedrock/Bedrock's for at least 2 to 3 years.

Inky in color with a short purple rim.

Full bodied and bold with medium acidity and long legs.

Dry on the palate and very fruity with blackberries, black currants, cooked cherries, cedar, vanilla, spices, espresso, chocolates, sweet tobacco and black pepper.

Long finish with fine grained tannins and cherries.

This is a delicious Merlot. Easy drinking and fruit-forward. In your face kind of wine at this point. Extracted and rich.

Delicious right out of the bottle, but still young and needs many years to mature properly. Already yummy, though.

Showing very nice complexity already, which is very nice to see.

Will be nice to revisit it in 5 years.

Paired wonderfully with BBQ Meats.

100% Sugarloaf Merlot grapes. A small production of only 200 cases.
