Sarah's note is spot on. This was rich, crazy dark, but in the end pretty enticing. Thanks Dave P for the bottle. NYC_Maenad on 5/3/2020: I had very low expectations for this bottle, which I bought ages and ages ago when my knowledge was less and my tastes were different. I expected it to be premoxed or, if not, then a oaky mess. It was actually a surprisingly nice bottle, in a richer style than I usually like, but not objectionable. We drank it along with a substantial dish of fricassee of capon, and found it provided a good foil to the richness of the sauce and vegetables. Sure, there was some oak going on, but not buttery or unpleasant. It even improved with some air as things went along. It's nice when bottles surprise you to the upside.

Eastside Tasting Group does White Burgundy (Mount Baker, Seattle, WA): Deep color, hazelnut, definite maturity. A little bitter and astringent on the finish at first, but this has nice acidity that improves with air. Upon reveal, clearly this was mature and in pretty good shape.

Mid to light in color. Musty nose, hint of floral. Not even a hint of oxidation. Mid- acid, good buttery malo-lactic mouth feel. A bit of funk on the nose and palette, but not in a bad way. Reminded me of an aged chenin-blanc. Lingering mildly acidic finish. Overall well balanced. Probably a few years past peak but very enjoyable now.

Unfortunately past its best but still a special wine. Big rich deep subtle oak, Acidity still high, medium+ body 14% alc. Slight tertiary caramel. Yellow peach. Slight bitter bite on the long complex finish.

Medium golden brass in color. Full, forward & attractive nose of ripe fruit aromas of apples, pears & citrus notes of lemons/limes with overtones of stony/flinty & floral notes, lemon curd, minerals, some butterscotch & roasted hazelnut notes & a hint of vanilla/toasted oak in the background. Medium bodied with a very good concentration of mature, well balanced & smooth textured, ripe flavors of apples, pears & lemons/limes with butterscotch, stony, minerals & a hint of toasty oak/vanilla. Lingering finish. Drinks quite well at present & at 17 years of age, it is at its peak of development, so drink up soon! Cork was clean & intact with saturation up to midpoint; bottle level was well in upper neck.

[purchased on release, perfect fill, tasted over 2 hours with JL, MK, BS over seafood soup, allowed to warm up from ~ 45F to ~ 65F]. Pale yellow color, nose included marzipan, ripe fruit, oak, oil/petrol; on palate long, mature fruit, lots of minerals. Took about 30 minutes to sing. Very similar to prior bottle that I entered note on here in May of 2016 (94 pts).

Spot on with no signs of premox. Rich nose of candied apples and nutmeg on the nose. Good acidity with green apples, citrus, and peach notes on the palate. Good finish.

From a bottle purchased upon release and pristinely cellared, this wine shows not even the slightest hint of oxidation. Medium golden and intensely aromatic, it is absolutely stunning at this point. Freshly acidic and seamlessly alcoholic (14%), it is a medium-bodied, mineral-laden elixer packed with orange zest, baked apples, almonds, pines nuts and bread dough. Impressively dense on the mid-palate and finishing very long, this represents classic quality in every sense. While it is always hit or miss that a white Burgundy will be prematurely oxidized (no matter how well the bottle has been cellared), owners of this 15-year-old wine will be very pleased if the oxidation bullet has been dodged. Drink now-2020.

Dinner at Home: Golden color; nose is highly aromatic, slightly sweet?, buttery, oily; palate is full bodied, richly textured, some fading white fruits, medium-plus fresh acidity, balanced alcohol; medium finish. Less citrus zest than my last taste in 2015, and definitely a bit more development, though its still enjoyable. I have one bottle left and will drink it in the next year. 92

Creamy, not much sesame, good minerality but shows maturation before its age. Ripe fruit with balanced acidity but not vibrant enough. Decent but not a great wine for its terroir.

Intimate Dinner Series: Domino and I Commemorate 15 Years w/Great 2001s (Gen Hoe, Geneva): Here again, this needed half an hour or so to really show itself. On opening there was a distinct hazelnut note with lemon and stone notes underneath. As the wine sat, the citrus notes came forward and this became brighter and quite fresh/lively. Flavors of lemon curd, almond, stone and mineral with hints of melon and honeysuckle too. Long finish. From a less than pristine source, most of the lot has been excellent- admittedly I have had more than my share of good karma redeemed with this lot. One bottle remains, which I'll open soon due to the poor provenance. I would think well-stored bottles are still a few years from being ready.

Small Sine Qua Non Dinner (Echo & Rig - Las Vegas NV): Still nicely fresh. Ripe, slightly tropical. A wine everybody could enjoy- fun and ripe with enough vibrant energy from middle to finish. Better/ longer now vs when last tasted 4 years ago.

Still light yellow. Aroma of green apple, slate and allspice. Taut and full bodied. The oak is restrained until the finish, when it is too forward for my taste. This is a young wine so there may still be hope for better integration of the oak. P.S. More lemon and less oak a couple of hours later.

Yellow color with a wimpy bouquet and flavor that left the impression of diluted minerals with hints of vanilla. Another disappointing Burgundy. Aging didn't help this wine. Drink the California Chardonnays and you will be less disappointed and out less money. Another bottle drunk a week later with a hard angular impression and just as wimpy.

[purchased on release, perfect fill, tasted over 2.5 hours with regular tasting group, allowed to warm up from ~ 45F to ~ 70F]. Pale yellow color, nose could only be white Burgundy; lots of complex elements in nose including ripe fruit, oak, oil/petrol; on palate long, all the above plus some butterscotch (no age-related caramel this evening), touch of lemon zest, lots of minerals. WOTN just edging out 2005 H. Boillot Corton-Charlie (8 wines total, none showed premox). This bottle took 40 minutes in glass and some warming to really sing, I think still could age another 2-5 years and see some improvement. Excellent with gravlax. Delighted to have another 5 bottles.
Definitely NOT a too ripe fruit+too much oak bomb of a wine. No honeyed elements tasted at all this evening. Believe I paid ~ $50 a bottle on release, excellent QPR (well, for C-C) given showing at this tasting.

Medium yellow gold in color. Aromas of crushed ripe yellow orchard fruits, citrus oils, wet stone and vanilla cream with a hint of oxidation. Medium bodied palate that is at once ripe with sweet orchard fruits veering towards tropical pineapple but is framed by good acidity and hints of oaky accents on the viscous, mineral laden and oily finish.

Possibly the best bottle of White Burgundy I've ever had. Starbright yellow with golden tones. So fresh and complex with minerality and wet stones combining with the fruit and spice beautifully. Builds in the mouth - the mid palate full of complex notes and a finish that lasted. Full of energy. Everything in balance and complementing each other - boy, it was good.

Celebrating Neil's 75th & Chinese New Year (Sun Wah, Chicago): Well I knew they wouldn't all be winners. This was the darkest of the four bottles left and definitely showed some oxidation. Of the remaining three, one is a bit darker and two are lighter by comparison, so hopefully that means two of three good ones.

Drank at Morgans. Nose shows feint oak, some melon, some citrus. Big, oily and viscous. Seemed a bit on the flabby side upon opening but then firmed up over time. Good fruit--pear, melon, apples, some honey. Fair acidity level, some spice and minerality. Nice complexity with good length. A big wine drinking very nicely right now

Over 3 nights. Initially we thought a touch of ox, but it was at its best on the third night, and the quite deep colour and persistent smoky flavours are, I think, no more than the wine's natural expression. Not the strongest of noses, but very assertive on the palate, complex and long. Very good stuff, but perhaps it will be even better in another couple of years.

2002 Champagne and Burgundy dinner with Eric (Chez Billy Sud - Washington DC): This was a pleasant surprise. Initially a bit ripe and clumsy. It becomes fresher with air. Yellow pit fruits, lemon curd, honey, sweet spices, steel and mineral. Good concentration, masculine steely palate impression, yellow fruits, good acidity, mineral and medium finish. Very CC and really enjoyable. Not a bad idea to decant this wine.

Dinner at Home; 2/26/2015-2/27/2015 (Fremont, CA): Light golden color; aromatic nose with buttery, oily, white fruits, lemon zest; palate is full bodied but immensely fresh, great acidity throughout, flavorful with some fruit, citrus zest throughout, persistence falls just slightly through midpalate; finish is medium length but fades faster than I expect it to. This is an excellent white burgundy with great balance, complexity, fabulous acidity, lacking only slight persistence through the finish. Drink now or in the next few years, this one won't fall off a cliff unless it oxidizes. 93-94

I had been saving this single bottle for several years waiting for just the right occasion. It was taken from the cellar at 50F and opened for 30 minutes to air at room temperature before serving with a warm potato-leek soup as a first course we shared with wine loving friends. The color was lovely and there was an enchanting delicate floral aroma. But, in the mouth, it just fell flat. The lovely play of flavors I anticipated were AWOL. It seemed almost lifeless. Our guests were polite and called it quite nice, but it was a huge disappointment for me. It did not seem flawed; I don’t know if it was past prime, or just not that special to start with. Fortunately, all was not lost. The main course of veal saltimbocca with polenta and wild mushroom sauce was accompanied by a magnificent 1952 Borgogno Barolo. The finale, a 1971 Coutet served with ripe red Bartlett pears, a Vermont Blue Cheese from Sugarbush Farms, and hand made goat cheese caramels was sublime.
Very approachable upon opening. Much more forward than the 02 L Latour CC served alongside. Some oak, tropical fruit. Nice mouthfeel. Well balanced. Very drinkable.

Palish yellow color. Muted nose, some oak there perhaps. Minerality hits me when I first sip this wine. Some fruit is there, some butterscotch, feint acidity. The wine's seen better days, unfortunately, but still enjoyable.

Subtle nose, slight butter and chalk. Delicious, with butterscotch, and almost sensual rib of acid. This is hardly a "big" Chardonnay, but mellow and delicious. Star of a party tonight where I think people thought they were having Cali chard. Was like Kistler w/o the overload. Loved it. And opened 3 bottles -- NO PREMOX!

Muted nose: some lemon with a fair amount of sweet oak and some heat as well. Much more showy on the palate: lemon and butterscotch, very spicy. Lots of oak in the finish. Good, but not great - too much oak for me. Nose - 3.5/6, Palate - 5/6, Finish - 4/6, Je Ne Sais Quoi - 1/2 = 13.5/20.

Good, but not great. Moderately yellow, and tears on side of glass. Some sharpness, and is there perhaps a hint of prem-ox? None of the mellow flavours one might have expected after 10 years -- still quite aggressive and primary. But the Bouchard CC isn't ready either, and it has a much bigger bite, so maybe I'm being a bit harsh. Judgment deferred.

Another Saturday at Knightsbridge - mostly blind (Northbrook, IL): Tasted double blind. Clearly a ripe white Burgundy, this showed ripe tropical fruit with plenty of new oak. Fruit was still very fresh and vibrant, i thought this might be from 2005 or 2006. Very fat and lush start-to-finish. Best at this point in its evolution, since I doubt this will evolve into a more nuanced wine.

Medium yellow. Beautiful honeysuckle and orange peel. Medium weight, ripe, pure fruit tremendous acidity and minerality to add balance. Buttery but not overly marked by the wood. Acquitted itself really well over the 3 hours it was open. Tremendous showing and everything you'd want from an '02 Grand Cru without any unwanted oxidation. Two of three bottles of this were outstanding; only one last year seemed advanced.

Very light golden color; nose shows complex combination of orange peel, oil, lemon zest, hint of petrol; palate is thick, viscous at first, citrus fruit, acidity on the midpalate lightens the texture, more fruit at the end; finish is clean, high acid, again citrus fruit. Overall the wine is obviously of high quality and complexity, still in early maturity but showing some hints of oxidative notes on the early palate. The weakest part of the wine is the slightly hollow end-palate/finish, but that's a minor complaint. This is quite an excellent wine with a long window, assuming it doesn't get premoxed. 94

Medium yellow color. Rip and big nose, buttered popcorn, vanilla cream, lemon-custrad, oak, some hints of tropical fruit. Full bodied, broad and lush palate, with ripe summer orchard fruits, hint of caramelized pineapple and vanilla. The oak has integrated very well and the wine has loads of extract and mid-palate sap, and a creamy texture that is quite enticing. Not a classic CC by any means, but a good drink neverthless.

Committing infanticide here, it is not ready and showed very little at first. With a litle coaxing over 20 minutes I started to see what this wine could be in five years or so. Deep medium yellow color. Nose sports a lot of vanillin oak and a bit of cream and chalk but is not woody. Palate is balanced and harmonious, creamy yet framed by plenty of acid. It's breeding shows but it ideally should sit for 5-10 years to show its best. Long finish. 5-12-17-8: 92/100

Moderately deep yellow. It had a beginning toasty, oxidative note that was held at bay over the life of the bottle. Orange and spice as well. Sound acidity, harmonious mouth feel, in fact lighter than I expected. A companion found it frankly tired. I was a little more positive than that, but it surely is more advanced than one would like to see from a 2002 Grand Cru, and it would be hard to argue for keeping this much longer.

After two dreadful flawed 96 Puligny Montrachet, this was very refreshing. It has opened up significantly since I have one of these a couple of years ago. Very strong mineral tone over all, with hints of citrus and pear. Still very acid though, good now but more cellar time will be beneficial.

Medium gold color. Any fears of premox were eliminated with the first sniff. Beautiful apple and lime with just a hint of oak. This really opened up over 2 hours. Slate minerality and gobs of luscious yellow fruits. Loooong finish of lip smacking lemony intensity. A lot of life left, hold the rest a few years. This was a lot more expressive than the Quintessence I had a few months ago.

Tropical fruit, hazlenuts, anise on nose. Rich, round texture; pineapple, slate and a surprising dose of anise/licorice, which was quite delicious and contributed to the complexity. This is more exotic than I expected from a CC; more akin to an excellent Meursault.

STG does White Burgundy and a bonus Cabot tasting (Gig Harbor, WA): OK, now we're getting serious. Some complained of heavy bottle stink right when this was opened, but by the time I got to it ten minutes later it was clean as could be. bright apples, acid, little oak and a nice, smooth palate that Jackie enjoyed a little cooler. Consistent with the last bottle, but not a hugely complex wine at this point. Maybe leave it for a while to see if it develops.

Burgs and Champagne at Heidi's: Deeper yellow color than the Lafon. The nose is more subdued and far riper featuring mainly tropical fruit aromas. On the palate this is full-bodied and packed with ripe fruit that is tasty but not nearly as expansive as the Lafon. Great balance. Nice finish that falls off fairly quickly. While good now, a few more years in the cellar should allow this to open up and become even more impressive.

Well I don't know if this is in a dumb phase or not, but this wine was rather monolithic and boring. It somehow improved with air but never impressed me. Pear, green apple and a touch of marzipan along nutty notes, it lacks zip, med body, with a med finish. To revisit in a few years.

nose: brings the depth that one would expect from a grand cru with beautiful tones of pears, white fruits, baking oils, bits of white florals and a real nice touch of tart green apples and some tones of minerals. Lovely and starts to reveal more as it opens up
taste: great medium/full body with well balanced and classy tones of white fruits, pears, bits of peaches, white florals, peach blossoms, minerals, and some bits of apples. tasty medium+ acidity shows itself, but its not intrusive and is certainly coming across in a drinking stage
overall: this cork was pretty soaked as it was up to 75%, but not really soft, but still a stain level. Nice light gold color, this is certainly on the early stages of its drinking window, but considering how soaked the cork was for such a young white burg, there exists a situation makes this a White burg to drink earlier. Very classy with lots of balance that doesn't neccessarily jump out of the glass, but more draws you in

A bit harsh straight from bottle, but still very pleasant. Potential is there for a superb wine in 5 - 10 years, still far too early to drink this beauty. Very strong notes of apple and to a lesser extent citrus fruit, wine feels quite hot and the oak is slightly too prominent at present.

Tasted at the home of Eddie Osterland prior to the Eric Clapton concert. Although a formal note was not made, it can be said that the wine is still very youthful and my impressions are similar to 12/12/03. This wine needs more time to fully strut its stuff (at which time it will likely merit an even higher score).

This was the 3rd of 3 bottles delivered to me frozen solid with corks protruding 2 months ago. I slowly defrosted them in the cellar and drank the first two right away. For this bottle, I drove the cork back in with a rubber mallet and cellared it until tonight. Surprisingly, there's little evidence of damage from the cold, other than heavy tartaric acid crystal at the bottom. Nice golden yellow color, completely lucent. Powerful nose with white fruit, citrus notes and a hint of pine. No oxidative notes whatsoever on nose or palate. The palate is crisp and clean, with fruit, minerals and acidity in perfect balance. Perhaps wine isn't as delicate as I often assume. This one went from solid ice to my glass; it didn't just survive, it remained a stellar drinking experience.

I had very low expectations for this bottle, which I bought ages and ages ago when my knowledge was less and my tastes were different.

Pale yellow color, nose included marzipan, ripe fruit, oak, oil/petrol; on palate long, mature fruit, lots of minerals. Took about 30 minutes to sing.

Still light yellow. Aroma of green apple, slate and allspice. Taut and full bodied. The oak is restrained until the finish, when it is too forward for my taste. This is a young wine so there may still be hope for better integration of the oak.

None of the mellow flavours one might have expected after 10 years -- still quite aggressive and primary. But the Bouchard CC isn't ready either, and it has a much bigger bite, so maybe I'm being a bit harsh. Judgment deferred.

One first gets a lot of minerality with a hint of oak on the nose. Rich and very well balanced on the palate. Citrus and apples. Not a huge Corton Charlie, but very well balanced and quite enjoyable.

This why you cellar corton. It takes time to integrate and gain the silky flavor similar to Montrachet. To say this is this the poor man's monty might offend a few, but in my opinion its is a good comparison...

This is pure liquid minerality, totally wound up, intense, barely yielding. Packed and stacked and in need of some time if you are willing to take the premox risk.

bright apples, acid, little oak and a nice, smooth palate that Jackie enjoyed a little cooler. Consistent with the last bottle, but not a hugely complex wine at this point. Maybe leave it for a while to see if it develops.

Slightly oxidized, no fruit or depth, just an oak veneer. This bottle showed lots of dried seepage under the capsule, not an uncommon problem with this producer and/or his importers.

Medium yellow. Ripe citrus on the nose. Full, even a bit fat to begin with, but this tightened noticeably and showed much more structure and minerality over a few hours. Average acidity, very understated use of wood, and by the end, silky, harmonious feel. Excellent.
