NR - this was a puzzling bottle. Not giving much on the nose or palate, but it didn’t seem tired and done. Didn’t feel corked or otherwise compromised lVery dense and with a green, bitter note on the finish that wasn’t nice.

Bottle, fill and cork excellent. Still very young. A beautiful and vital wine. It was excellent with mousaka, (despite the culinary mismatch), but really needs a pork roast or chacroute. Could keep this for decades.

Bordeaux September 2023 Well ... . Had this before, so I hope for more, it's been perfect stored but only came out ok - the nose upon opening was glorious, and it' keep being the most positive - it' most have hid it's ageing point, it slowly fall together and was boring at the end, it had no personality left and had some honey flavours, if serve blind (and not thinking of the nose) it was more northern Rhône which I do not give for a sh.. about . . this is sadly overpriced, and germany has so much more to offer - wondering if this vineyard had it's peak in the 70' - 80' and early 90's .. . Drink !! (90 is for the nose - 88 for it's drinking quality)

Bottle bought on release and stored in cellar - well past it’s prime with muted nose and a bitter finish - not particularly enjoyable if I’m being honest
A White Wine Dinner in Celebration of Crab (San Francisco): Medium yellow. Younger, lighter, much more lemony and mineral than the Frédéric Emile. Finer and more elegant. Although angular at its core, it avoids hard edges. Outstanding and looking more and more like a classic Clos Ste. Hune over time.

The white selection at the excellent 3 star Flocons de Sel in Megeve opens with a lovely list of Clos St Hume and frankly one needs to bother no more. This lovely 2001 was a majestic wine that exploded on us with a soft petrolly, light soft honey and caramel and then on full citrus profile. The palate is here this wine stands alone , the definition of polished but big acidity that holds the wine together and really is so effortlessly elegant. 97 the rest is talk

Sixteenth Annual White Truffle Dinner (Inovasi - Lake Bluff IL): In 85/86/01 vertical. Incredibly rich and ripe with botrytis hints that are both enchanting and dominating. So much petrol, floral, apple and apricot notes in wonderful proportion with very good density. Good now, but I think this is still 5-10+ years away from really strutting its stuff.

Honeyed petrol is the first impression. Golden colour, still steely and young. Hints of butterscotch and grapefruit. Acidity is high of course and is only beginning to mellow now. Medium to full body. Long finish, some complexity. Can drink now but will be better in 10 years.

The orange tinted deep gold color led me to believe this bottle was oxidized. It was. Drinkable though and there is some interesting quince and bitter caramel notes. Unfortunately the flavors are flattened and muted even though the acidity is sound. Premox for an almost immortal Hune.

Not for everyone: old Riesling has a unique character that really is distinctive and simply not to everyone’s taste. I had it with a Thai dinner, perfect pairing for my palate.
Burnished gold. The 2001 CSH is starting to mature now, but will continue to develop and then have a very long peak. On the nose, marmalade and petrol, green apples. Intensely flavorful with medium acidity, just-ripe yellow plum fruit, a bit flat in the mid palate but recovers into a long finish.

Color of fresh first morning urine. Fortunately, it smells a lot better. Very mature yet showy and lively. Thick. Grape skin, nut skin, pear skin, petrol. Powerful. Would be even better with a bit more acidity, though. Impressive, but don’t wait until tomorrow to drink it.

The best wine in the CSH tasting from this century, the ‘01 is darker in color than the ‘01 Cuvée Frédérique Émile yet distinctly fresher and more aromatic and the acidity and balance is superior. Just beginning to show some maturity, these CSH take a long time to come around, especially for a dry white wine. Nice combination of melon, citrus and mineral. Distinctive and enjoyable.

My first of four. Slow-oxed for six hours then nursed all evening. I found this young and in need of a few more years, even though it benefited immensely from air and definitely needs a long decant today. Petrol on the nose and palate. Some stone fruit and citrus perfume as well. Strong acidity that threatens to overwhelm the fruit. Dry and structured.

Birthday bottle, which I drank from the Grassl Glass Mineralité glass. As it was a bit of an impulse to open this, I did pop and pour, though there was about an hour from my first couple of sips to any serious drinking. I am sure that helped the wine open up.
It's hard to describe the wine other than to say it was monumental. The non-fruit elements were clearly the focus of the wine, but not because the fruit had faded, but rather because the stone foundation of the wine demanded center stage. The aromatics were gorgeous, with some crisp tree fruit tones, but more salty, savory, fresh pine, rain on hot stones and clean forest scents than I could absorb. Completely dry on the palate, it nevertheless had a richness in the mid-palate, before the acidity cut through like a blade. I never did find out how long the finish was, as I kept going back for another sip before it faded. I know that wine is supposed to be a partner to the food, but this bottle grabbed my attention to the point where I barely paid attention to what I was eating.
Captivating stuff that has eons to go before it fades.

Light golden color. Flowers, spice, and intense peach aromas. Rather light weight for Clos Ste. Hune but very assertive and flavorful. Completely dry. Hallmark acidity has carried it this far, but based upon this excellent bottle, I would surmise that this is fully resolved (or perhaps even a touch beyond peak) and will not improve from here.

Keller Open Afterparty (Weingut Keller, Flörsheim-Dalsheim, Germany): The nose shows a nice balance between fruit like apricot, a bit of yellow fruit and lots of spices. You also recognise in the mouth that it’s a bit broader in style so not the cut of the german Rieslings. Quite powerful but also with a certain amount of precision. On the finish the wine has just a hint of heat. Still a lot of potential left.

Medium yellow. I'll be brief-an exquisitely discrete, elegant, complex Clos Ste. Hune that is still quite young. Herbs, tea, lemon, and tremendous minerality all rolled up into a seamless package. Less dense and dances more than the outstanding Frederic Emile from this vintage.

I guessed Clos St. Hune here, but went for '95 (Simon, having a taste at the other table, went for 2007); it is quite developed, hints of petrol, extremely dry, firm, classic, very much on the minerals. A wine for food, certainly, and a wine to enjoy slowly and concentrated. Will keep, but ready, I think. #SøllerødKro#X-mas

Pot-luck at Abbot Street (Abbot Street, Ngaio, Wellington, New Zealand): World-class riesling at it's apogee of expression. Certainly at a peak of maturity, this shows stone fruit, citrus, honey, earth, fresh florals and foliage, and lifted aromatics. In the mouth, a very special supple texture is a major feature of the wine. Round, mineral, complete and very long. This has very attractive and rich ripe flavours, but finishes with a very serious structure. The bones of this wine are superb.

Midweek with the GMs: Dark coloured but has good aromatics - floral, orange, apricot and fig. Reasonably honeyed on the palate, showing some age, but has the acidity kick through to perks things up. This bottle needed drinking now.
A very different story from the bottle a couple weeks ago. High acid. Good notes of lemon, peach, petrol. This is bright and has great uplift. Vibrant and energetic. Ethereal. Incredible aromatics.

Awesome nose highly indicative of the varietal: soft petrol and ethanol, ripening white fruit, green apple, pears and white peaches. Supremely fresh and pure with cool wet slate and stone minerality. Equally as good on the palate, nice light weight but with great energy and vibrancy. Acid keeps this very alive and interesting. Very flavourful and well put together. Awesome.

A very special wine. In the beginning a little bit broad in the palate. You smell and taste ripe peaches, Honey, yellow ripe fruits, but it ends with an elegant finish, very pure and animinating acididty. The aftertaste reminds me to peaches. In ever guessed Rieling. Didn't reach his peak but close to it. 94-95

Fioranos and Great Bottles (Tim's, SF): Moderate gold. Nose is dominated by petrol, with a hint of complex floral and citrus fruit. Restrained and very cool-climate, high-toned. On the palate, a complex melange of cool terpenic fruit - ripe lemon, cool stony melon, fresh flowers. Well-lit flower petals, dipped in gold. Slight RS, maybe only 3g. Medium body, elevated alcohol - 13%? (correct), super high acid - strong, clean (less malic) and stony. Very slight impression of saffron (botrytis). Slaty and mineral finish, with intensity and persistence.
This wine has impressive integration. The fruit is complex but tightly wrapped up. It requires close listening. The best of its class I’ve tasted, but really just a hair better than some of my other favorites. At north of $200, I don’t think I’ll be seeking this out again, but it was educational to taste this. A deserving benchmark Riesling of Alsace.
Score: Between 9 and 9.5

I don't like it, I love it. Imagine a fresh bouquet of lime, stone and white flowers, dipped in a little petrol. The dense and intense, dry, young Riesling flavors flood the palate and just go on forever and ever. A fabulous wine that hasn't yet approached it's full potential.

Opened to check then re-corked for a few hours. This was showing really well and more mature than I expected. Great full mouthfeel with peach pit, minerality, and some wax and tropical fruit on the palate. I have gotten the crystalline characteristic on early 90's before which I didn't here. This was in a good place, but will continue to improve for 10+ years I believe though.

Cellared since release, first time tasted. Drunk after decanting. Exquisite nose of smoke and a dash of petrol. Delicate for a Clos Ste. Hune (think German trocken more than Alsatian Riesling). Utterly and thrillingly dry, some dried papaya that you feel more than taste, and acidity that must be at the legal limit without seeming shrill or sour. Crystalline, stony, and long on the finish. It is finer and less dense than the '01 regular Frederic Emile and has more drive and intensity than other lighter weight vintages of this cuvee such as 1997, for example. I was somewhat taken aback at just how tremendously well this particular bottle showed, since 2001 doesn't have the reputation of being a great vintage for CSH. The best part is that it will go on like this for many more years. Wow.

Trimbach Clos Ste. Hune & Cuvee Frederic Emile Vertical with James Handford MW (Handford Wines, London): Very expressive wine. The colour is goldish/yellow, glossy and vibrant. A touch of caramel undertone on the nose, a touch floral at times. Feels fatter and very nicely structured. Young of course and has a good 10 years in it. Concentrated, big acidity yet polished acidity, round and elegant much like the tannin of a young yet beautiful claret. Nice now but full of promise for the future. 93-94

Tasted this in direct comparison with Cuvée Frederic Emile. Darker in colour, golden yellow. More expressive on the nose, also more complex, finer, sweeter, floral. Same thing on the palate, a bit more of everything, multi-layered and complex, more concentration and power, more acidity to keep things balanced, really long. 93-95

The '01 is drinking beautifully right now showing the classic "buns of steel" structure with perfect crisp acidity and fairly evolved flavors of lime, menthol, grass and charcoal. Medium-bodied and beautifully balanced with a wonderful salinity, great extract and that classic texture of "water over rocks" that makes this wine so unique. The finish is intense and fabulously complex and grippy with great mineral content. I caught this bottle at the right moment...

This wine showed two faces over the course of the evening. Initially it was broad, creamy, fruity and incredibly friendly for CSH. Fast forward 90 minutes, and the friendly aspects pulled back, and a much more Hune-like austerity took over. Final sips were quite steely, with dashes of creamy lemon and minerals. Drink fast or leave alone a while longer.

Most people preferred this 2001, I lean slightly toward the 1998.

This was good Riesling, with breadth across the palate, balance and some minerality. However there's a distinct malty note and not that much fruit. This was opened with a Keller 2005 Hubacker GG & a 2007 Alzinger "Steinertal" and both of those wee dramatically more intense and concentrated wines. No one thought the Clos St hune was the best wine. I'd be interested in trying this next to the 375th anniversary Frederic Emile bottling from 2001, because my gut says qualitatively they're probably not that different.

A private lunch (Restaurant De Lindenhof **, Giethoorn, Netherlands): Smoky, minerally nose, lovely depth, hint of petrol, subtle fruit and floral aromas, quite a Germanic style; on the palate layered and fine-boned, all about elegance and finesse, relatively light weight, ripe acidity, not the ultimate cut, on the soft side even for a Clos Ste Hune; very good length. Fully mature, drink up. Far more developed than expected, bottle variation?

Light straw to the eye. Nose was restrained at first, but opened nicely within a short while as it warmed.
Very nicely integrated palate, seemed smooth and restrained in comparison to the 1998 Cht d'Orschwihr we had just before it. Acids were citrusy, yet did not stick out. Quite dry, I'm guessing less than 2 g of residual.

Made of the same stuff as the '83 Hune, but obviously a lot more primary with the citrus fruit flavours and minerality coming across much more prominently here and dominating the other nuances. Very precise and focused with tremendous acidity in the mouth that keeps it very light on its feet and really focused. Impressive right now, but more about long-term promise.

To me this was a toned down version of the FE. Perhaps a bit more complex and much more delicate, for now this is a good wine. But aging will surely be rewarding. However when taking the price into consideration I would choose 3 bottles of the FE over 1 bottle of this.

Third Annual White Truffle Dinner (David Burke's Primehouse - Chicago IL): Good floral start. Probably more accessible than the 2000 in the next glass but less powerful or exciting (to me). Wine Spectator Wine Experience; 10/26/2007-10/27/2007 (New York): Floral nose, very elegant. Flavors start off accessible, then lots of energy and tension toward the middle, giving this wine the feeling of a "coiled spring" that will burst forth with power. Matt Kramer's "Wines of My Heart" (NYC): “Clos Ste. Hune is the finest dry Riesling in Alsace, which therefore makes it the finest dry Riesling in the world.” It comes from a 3.21 acre vineyard. Matt loves Clos Ste. Hune so much that he married his wife of 27 years in the 11th century fortified church that appears on the label. His best man was Hubert Trimbach. “CSH has enormous delicacy allied with enormous power. It has a profound particularity, and needs 15 years to reach maturity, and then can easily go another 15 years after that. Hay, spices, and abundant minerality. Seashells (the vineyard was once an ancient seabed). Utterly, absolutely dry. So persuasive and convincing, it makes you want to live. If God was drinking spring water, this is what it would taste like. An oak-free zone, this wine is a pure play. There are no bad vintages of CSH.”. I am a huge fan of Clos Ste. Hune and this vintage lived up to my expectations. So powerful and laser-like. I would love to try it in 2021. Just a shade behind the 1996 CSH, which is one of my top ten all-time favorite wines, and perhaps my #1 dry white.

Older and interesting wines with the Meat Fairy at Châteauneuf-du-Joe. (Dougherty's.): Pow! Right in the kisser. A very tightly coiled fist of piercing lime, white, dusty gravel and a pineapply/guava tropicalness. Bibenda Day 2007 (AIS, Parco dei Principi, Rome): Medium gold colour. On nose, started with a fair bit of SO2, burnt popcorn, but from start to finish it had that typical Riesling aroma of citrus and petrol. On palate, supposedly dry, but tastes off-dry; high but pleasing acidity, and a sweet fruitiness, giving it a lemonade-like character; some petrol; lowish alcohol. Very nice, slightly austere style of Riesling.

You also recognise in the mouth that it’s a bit broader in style so not the cut of the german Rieslings. Quite powerful but also with a certain amount of precision. On the finish the wine has just a hint of heat. Still a lot of potential left.

Wow.

Shows great promise with a finish a mile long while developing richness at the back of the palate, but this is painfully young now. Open only in the interests of science at this stage, but this is a great wine. A.

one of the greatest french whites I have had, super minerality, remarkably dry, this is serious grand cru wine.

Enjoyed at Jean-Georges in NYC with The Godfather and RT. Incredibly captivating and complex wine. Decanted for about 30 minutes. Bone dry with excellent minerality, acidity and balance. Light fruit, chalk, and metal in the mouth. Memorable finish that goes on and on. Superb now although this will continue to improve.
