A beautiful Angelus here that kept opening in the glass but it remains stubbornly young and in need of more time. The classic opulence of Angelus was showing through and the purity of the dark fruit was fabulous but it's simply not fully expressing itself yet. Clearly had a higher alcohol level on the nose and palate than the other '00's drunk alongside which is always the case with Angelus and why I sometime shy away from buying it especially at today's prices. 92+

This is simply wonderful. While it’s a bit reserved on the nose, there is so much body here. Unctuous and classy. Very long finish. We put this up against a 1990 Las Cases, and the Las Cases won the battle. But it was an unfair comparison considering right vs left bank and big difference in age. But they paired very nicely together. Clearly a crowd pleaser and a real treat.

Carnet. Nose a mix of tobacco, anise, black fruits. Smooth mouthfeel of tobacco, some black fruits. Absolutely delicious and one of the best of the year.

M&PD at Goldbergs. P4. Still too young but will be epic wine. Already beautifully balanced but oak and fruit still strong. They collide against each other in finish.

Decanted 2 hours and in glass 1 hour. Amazing nose (score based on nose) but still way too young. Has not yet come together. At least 5 more years before I revisit.

Chez Winefool Goodbye Dinner (Chicago, IL): Didn't get enough air but you can see the very high end quality and potential. Hold or give it a long, long decant. Mid to high 90s potential.

Sadly not up to the same exacting standards of my last bottle(see below, tasted 2.18.23).I double decanted 2 hours before, but it clearly needed more time.

Just a beautiful St. Emilion with bright purple & violet-tinged fruit and a classic Angelus opulence. Full and layered but also taut and structured with a refined finish. Youthful but with air and a slice of roast beef, it was singing. 94+

Super.A 2 hour decant and it was absolutely singing.Smooth integrated fruits with lovely texture and finesse. This wine was à point and will continue to drink beautifully for a few years yet.
Absolutely stunning tonight. So generous and giving after hardly any aeration, 2000 Angelus wafts from the glass and the decanter with explosive aromatics of blackberry jam, creme de cassis, cigar box and damp earth. It has the most perfect balance of deep fruit intensity and tertiary character, and the palate shows an incredible combination of finesse, density and lift, with a regal mouthfeel and melting tannins. A masterful seesaw of power and elegance. Fantastic.

Absolutely fantastic now. Was great from first pour, better after 30 min but no long Decant needed. Long luxurious deep luscious and delicious dark fruits, deft wood and sumptuous undergrowth.

Magnum. Delicious but still a bit tight. Complex, balanced, long and fresh, but stillcompact. It needs a further aging or a bit more time in a decanter. More enjoyable in bottle at this stage of its evolution.

Decanted for 2 hours then drank contemplatively at home over a long evening but saved some for the fiollowing night’s dinner. Profoundly semi opaque black-red colour moving to transparent ruby red at the meniscus. Nose is deep, sophisticated oak and black spices with some very confit blackberry in the mid-ground. Mesmerising but still a bit catch me if you can unevolved. Palate is mouthpuckeringly tannic on entry which rather stops you in your tracks from the get go. There is great depth of pure black and red fruit lurking in the beckground like an escaped murderer hiding from police dogs in the darkness of the forest. More richness of fruit and tar and camphor after a night in the fridge. Super heady resonance and reverberance on the finish but the mid-part of the journey doesn’t justify opening a bottle at this stage. Keep for 10 years but this is already an easy 93.....although I scored it 96 when I last drank it in 2016, so maybe it is going through a slightly broody phase.

Upon opening, rather harsh tannins. Five hours later: Lots of volume, slightly heavy even. Fair complexity, with the tannins still lurking behind. Fairly long. Beautiful, persistent fruit. Enough freshness. Still, I miss a "je ne sais quoi". P.S.: Bought as a future and perfectly stored. P.P.S.: Now, I know what I miss: Excitement.
A Wonderful Retirement Dinner Celebration (Los Olivos, CA): Much more expressive than I feared, in fact seemingly at peak, with any baby fat shed. Powerful black fruit, some truffle and leather, with a bitter chocolate note emerging on the finish. Lush tannins. Sheer class.

20 Vintages of Angelus (1988-2015): All wines tasted single blind. A few observations and conclusions: It seems that until more recently, Angelus focused on late picking, big wines with too much extraction. Most pre 2004 wines we tasted did not show well and are drying out or already have. The younger vintages showed better but only time will tell if the 2004 to 2015 vintages will age more gracefully. An experienced Angelus collector mentioned a style shift towards more finesse right after the promotion to Premier Grand Cru Classe A with the 2012 vintage. It would have been great to include more of the recent vintages (we had only 09/10/14/15) to better understand when and to what extent that shift happened. Still, there are some very good wines with the 2010 being the WOTN (rated 96+ pts, the structuredness, freshness and purity of the vintage shines through), narrowly ahead of the 2008 (96pts, these 2008 right banks are singing these days and are incredibly fresh) as well as two wines with 95 pts, the 2005 (slightly closed but lots of complexity and no structural deficits) and the 2015 (showcasing the stylistic shift: there aren’t many 2015s out there that share the light- and airiness and perfect ripeness level and purity with their respective 2010 counterparts).
TN: Not overly expressive nose. On the palate, this shows a lot of substance with lots of dark and dark red fruit, lots of crushed rocks and fresh herbs and some oaky notes/coffee. The structure is quite good with velvety tanins, high but well integrated acidity but still just a touch bit drying towards the finish. But this is very sexy and gets sweeter by the minute without loosing its freshness. Nice creaminess and good balance overall. 93 pts today, but my guess is that this will be another vintage without a long life as it will dry out prematurely.
Angélus vertical (Fribourg): Angélus vertical of 20 vintages. Main observations were : 1/ Older vintages before the mid-2000s often suffered from drying tannin and showed a lot of extraction, 2/ Younger vintages quickly benefited from aeration hence decanting advised, 3/ the fruit profile became darker over time 4/ best vintage to drink today: 2004. All wines were directly poured with no prior decant and served in flights of 4.
Tasting note: Ripe red and blue berry fruit profile. There was also a fresh, sweet spiciness with herbal elements. Plenty of acidity in the structure with firm, maybe slightly greenish tannin. Would pick the lesser 2001 or 2002 vintages over this.

Black-ruby; gooey, chewy, oily, rich with sweet ripe attack but dry mid and finish is what I wrote in my notes. Clearly right bank, with lovely mouthfeel, structured, good supporting acidity to balance it out. My #4. DD Bordeaux 1989-2000 Lawson's Steakhouse

Compelling in every sense of the word, the star of the show is all the perfectly ripe, silky berries cloaked in layers of velvet-textured tannins on the palate. The seemingly endless finish, with its layers of plums, chocolate fudge, black cherries, spice, and earthy nuances keeps you coming back for sip after sip. The only issue here is that the bottle is emptied faster than you'd like.

This remains quite youthful despite its richness and ripeness and needed 4+ hours in a decanter to really show itself. There is delicious sweet blackberry fruit with a very opulent texture and the wine is layered and velvety. The finish is still firmly tannic but there are wonderful notes emerging of graphite minerals, sweet tar and black licorice. A very seductive wine that could use more time. 94+

Cellared since release, perfect cork and fill. Pop and pour, takes about an hour to open up. Nose of plum, cassis, blackberries, oaky/smoky tar, cedar and earth. Beginning tertiary complexity. Full body, ripe fruit, lush palate feel, well-balanced, plenty of tannins, long finish. Excellent to outstanding, drinking beautifully now, expect even more as the complexity ramps up over the years.

No question it could use more time in the cellar, like almost all 2000 Bdx, but it’s drinking very pleasurably. Blue sweet fruit, almost fruit forward, showing off the merlot, with decent structure, no tertiary and some secondary development. Decanted 3 hours.
I have one more which we’ll see about in 5+ years.

Great Wine With Great Friends (Cherokee Town & Country Club): Course #5 - Roasted Duck Breast. Similar to the Burgundy course, the food & wine pairing was wonderful. However, even better was comparing two monster millennium Bordeaux wines from 2000 vintage comparing left to right bank. The Angelus is more evolved and mature compared to the La Mission as you would expect from a Merlot/Cab Franc driven wine. While the Angelus had the best nose of the two, it had a slightly off putting amount of oak on the finish, which had me asking, will this mellow out with more time in the cellar? The La Mission as it opened up in the glass throughout the evening became the better of the two wines. However, both are just now entering their early maturity windows and could benefit from at least another 10 years in the cellar. These wines were decanted for two hours and then consumed over the course of four additional hours.

Really good nose of tobacco and dark chocolate. On the palate, this is still quite powerful with excellent lift and intensity and extraordinarily precise flavors of blackerry liqueur, dark chocolate and liquid graphite. The finish is grippy still but with a wonderful layered quality with complex notes of tobacco and dark spices. Young but beautiful. 95+

With a good depth of color, the showy aromatic profile delivers its smoke, licorice, dark cherry, truffle, plum and herbal essence with little effort. Rich, full-bodied, opulent and showy, the velvety, ripe, sweet fruit comes along with licorice and smoky chocolate overtones in the finish. Drink this stellar wine now and over the next 2 decades.

Deep, dark garnet color. Medley of berries with sweet saddle leather and flint. Bright, vibrant palate with dry tannins on the back end. Energizes the palate with incredible mouthfeel that goes on and on. Really beautiful wine - love how it’s drinking at this age and excited to have waited 2 decades. Very curious to see how it evolves over time, but ready to crack the next bottle.

From a pristine bottle likely purchased on release, decanted 4+ hours.
Quite weird. Tons of greenness, particularly loads dill. Tasted like a cool vintage Napa Cab with American oak notes. Perhaps they use a weird toast on the barrels? A bit modern styled as well, ie. fruit and oak. Dill and tannins on the palate. Over-paled, I’d say. This showed poorly in a flight of 4 St Julien and two St. Emilion.
Opened for 3 hours now. Garnet, brown rim. Sweet dark fruit nose with an earthy ‘wet forest’ overtone. Soft tannins, chalk and cherry and rose petal on palette. Long rich finish.
Apologies for a 95 rating. There’s something indefinite missing mid-palate. I wanted this to be 98, but it wasn’t.
60-års dag og blinsmaking: Blind. Nøtter og solbær, kjempestruktur og utrolig lengde, alle klassiske elementer. Overraskende strukturert til å være en 2000, og Angelus. Vent 10-20 år.

The fill was into the neck and the cork was sound; popped, poured and consumed over the course of 2 hours. A deep purple garnet color, with no bricking. A bit tight on the nose, reluctantly offering up notes of dried blackberry, dark chocolate, black truffle, scorched earth and hints of roasted fennel. Medium bodied, with ripe tannins, great tension and focus, and a long finish. In hindsight, I should have double decanted this, but I was short for time after the ‘90 troplomg mondot and ‘89 Pichon baron didn’t live up to expectations. Bags of life

Deep ruby in color, looking perhaps a decade younger than its true age, the wine pops with truffle, smoke, licorice, a sprig of mint, dark chocolate and ripe plums. Silky, soft and fresh on the palate, in the finish, the wine feels like velvet, tastes like juicy dark, red fruits and bitter chocolate.

From Magnum. Decanted for about two hours while drinking a Clos de Mouches 2005 (fantastic full of pear but near its end). The Angelus 2000 is a flawless wine. Color was dark ruby, slightly red at the rim. Complete structure, endless fruit and aftertaste. The nose gave earth, leather and pencil shavings. Couldnt wait but should have, the wine had so much life still. Outstanding altogether..wish I will add another in my cellar! Finished the night with a 1985 Palmer - a perfect night with great friends. Che bella la vita!

Amazing, velvety mouthfeel. Plush with no richness. Tannins muting the fruit quite a bit (18 years at the time of tasting). Absolutely enjoyable now, but I bet this will be at or near perfection when it reaches 25 years! Wish I had more.

Really needed a good 2+ hr decant to show itself. Then surprisingly reserved and coiled but beautifully delineated with classic flavors of dark chocolate, charcoal and refined blackberry fruit. Really fine and silky with a lot of depth and I really like the mineral component here which has a flinty character. Finishes firm with all kinds of complex flavors beginning to emerge. Early days still for this wine but quite drinkable with a long decant. This is really classy juice and not at all overdone which surprised me a bit.

Quite concentrated with a velvety texture. At this point, it remains very young, with powerful dark fruit but only starting to show some development, by way of a floral note. Hold for 10 more years.

Acker Auction - June 2018 (Laduree NYC W Broadway): This wine is continuing to impress. After having had some very mediocre experiences with Angelus, this is 2 good ones in one week. To be fair, it's pretty super young. A bit tart. Some fig and plum. But a touch of floral and nice and a wine that really will be something.

Angelus Dinner: Very open nose with lots of clean blackberry fruit, beef bouillon, minerals, pastilles, a touch roasty-toasty with a pleasant summer truffle edge. Texturally pleasing with lots of silken tannins on the palate. Despite their relatively young age, a lot of 2000 right banks don't seem to be holding a lot back at the moment. When you taste a very tight, big wine it's easy to get an idea that time will unravel a great secret (think young first growth). But this doesn't seem to hold much back - there's just not as much interest as I had hoped. I wouldn't spit this, but I'm also unlikely to chase this; not a patch on the compelling 1990 which was much more dynamic and edgy at this age.

A wine close to perfection, which gave me the feeling it is still very young and probably worth waiting a couple more years. It is deep, with a perfect balance, full bodied but also vividly fresh. More classical in style than I would have expected. It is very long, with velvety tanins and never gave me an impression of "over the top" in terms of alcohol or extraction. A truly magnificient wine, that I suspect will gain the missing point after a further aging. Very much looking forward to drinking again this sheer beauty in 5 years. Drunk next to 82 Mouton, I favored Angelus over the latter (although Mouton was gorgeous too). Bottle was open and decanted 3 hours in advance.

Château Angélus tasting with Hubert de Boüard (Wine Watch, Fort Lauderdale, Florida): Another one of the top wines of the vertical tasting. It's starting to turn the corner in its development, showing off some maturation. Surprisingly approachable right now, but still subdued. A very dark color, almost black. It showed off aromas of dark plum, cassis, truffle, earth, minerals, and licorice. Full-bodied and powerful, with a very long finish. It did shut down in the glass a bit, but the potential is obvious. Right now, I would probably drink the 2001 while waiting on the 2000.

decanted about 2 hours before dinner deep black crystals of sediment at bottom but less than the other bottle I had a few years ago Nose: rising from the decanter and leading with smoke and resinous cedar and then something like an earhy-hay smell (an aroma I associate with merlot based bordeaux) Eye: Violet-ruby jewel Palate: plummy and currant and rich length at the back end and the nose comes back with smoke. Very captivating mmmm, mmmm, mmmm good. I do not have any more bottles but would say it will likely remain at this joyous level at least another 10 years but why wait?

Deep dark ruby, nearly opaque. Fresh fig and damson plum with a touch of charred cedar. Glycerin mouthfeel with plush tannins, but enough grip and acid to keep it well-structured and agile. Long finish with cigar box, cassis and smoky graphite nuances. Wonderful to drink now – at peak, but should hold well through 2030.

Definitely powerful, but nothing more than that. There was nothing special about this wine for me. Its definitely well made, but not in the league of other big wines from St. Emilion, like the big white horse, or Pavie. One noticeable different is that this wine is not following the sweeter and extracted side of the region and is geared more towards an age worthy cuve. Maybe what this needs is more time, allot of it. drink or HOLD

It is hard to believe it's already been a few years since I last tasted the 2000 Angelus. Time has been good to this wine. Already stunning, almost 18 years of age has placed this wine into the next league. Cashmere tannins and an ocean of perfectly ripe, dark red fruits, licorice, truffle, flowers, smoke and toast lead the band. But on the palate is where the real deal lives. Luxurious, velvet textured fruit that lives with you for close to 60 seconds! This is pure, hedonistic pleasure in all the right places. I'm getting thirsty, just writing this note.

[Magnum] Four hour double decant. Large bouquet with opulent black and blue berry fruit. Dense and rich with some secondary earth aromas coming out. Dark and chocolatey, chocolate covered black cherries. On the palate this was quite plummy and opulent. Structured but not unduly tannic. High percentage Cab Franc provided herbaceous and green notes. A very well put together wine that shows a little more nuance than memories of the beefy '00 Pavie. Would obviously wait on these; only upside.

Saint Emilion 2000 vintage: 15 years in bottle (Grill Room at the Rosewood): Wine #9 was none other than Château Angélus, a bottle I brought to the tasting. Much concentration with dark fruit that is ripe with notes of chocolate. I have had the 2000 on several occasions and in verticals, over time, and have enjoyed it, but it seems to be just a tad monolithic when compared to, say, the 1998 or 2001, which conveys more lift and freshness on the finish. I understand some enthusiastic reactions, as the mid palate proved juicy and opulent and, yes, sexy.

Totally black-red opaque. Nose is OMFG drop dead gorgeous.... so perfumed...very Asian spice... almost resonant inside the head even on the nose. Palate is beautifully clean....precise, pencil lead, graphite, so pure black and red berry fruit. Still a work in progress but it is already insanely good. Very soft tannins. Greg opened this at my request because it was so good two years ago, and better now, but its best will be in 10 more years.

Angelus 2000 has a distinctive nose - wonderfully expressive with floral fresh notes from the ripe cab franc and also mineral, spice and charcoal. Rich in the mouth, but less taste complexity at the moment. This should have much more in store - definite upside, especially if it develops the Asian 5 spice I love in mature Angelus. Drink from 2022. 95+pts

Second Sunday Group: 2000 Bordeaux (R&D's): Double blind. Dark color. Initial aromas of earth and dark fruit, developing iron, herb, plum and black currant qualities as it opens in the glass. There're good tannins and structure here, but this is somewhat tight. Plummy dark fruit turns to currants and black cherry but remains structured; towards the end more forward and juicy within the confines of the structure. There's plenty of fruit so while it is firm there is a sense of balance which some of the other wines in the lineup lack tonight. 91-92 pts.

dark inky color, on the nose a sweet ripe fruit of great potency but showing little distinction, noticeable oak that is still not integrated (dangerous at 16 years of age- even in a large scale vintage like 2000 IMHO), on the palate a mass of sweet fruit but with drying tannins that creates some discord, cherry notes over time and a bit of that lovely bramble that is characteristic of Angelus of old, for all my complaints I think this will actually come out rather nice in time, I think a good deal of breed and subtlety has been sacrificed in the name of achieving a greater structure- but I do expect this will come together and offer a nice reward at the finish line, but I also think this is less than it could have been in terms of uniqueness, the real question is the oak and whether that ever fully integrates. (***)?, 2025+ If you are going to put your faith in this one, give it a long time- it is a 2000 after all.

Wow, is this drinking well although still young and fairly modern for Bordeaux. Expressive nose of dark fruits and minerals with a strong whiff of chocolate. On the palate, quite rich and opulent with deep flavors of black currants and dark berries. Thickly-textured and quite opulent and really regal in the glass. Finishes plush with substantial but smooth tannins that need more time to resolve. A gorgeous vintage for Angelus and really hard not to enjoy. Tasted blind at North, Armonk, NY 94+

Tasted at the Christie's Angelus dinner in NYC alongside the Angelus 1989 (wine of the night), 1993 and 1998. The 2000 seemed very reserved on the nose and on the palate. Somewhat one dimensional and lacking character when compared with the 1989 and 1998. I wonder whether this bottle was not properly stored since I have had this wine before which much better results. Stefanie Bouard de Laforest of Chateau Angelus commented that she has had mixed experiences with the 2000 recently and that it probably just needs more time to open up.

The wine has still quite a bit of tartiness to it, yet underneath there is enormous power and balance. It is just massively too young and I expect this wine will reach 95+pts in 10 years. At the moment it is just like sportscar with its emergency breaks locked.

Gentlemen's Lunch (Jackson Room): shame we didn't have enough time to decant it properly. needs at least 2hrs in decanter. didn't quite have enough complexity at this stage to match Latour's class, but is a great Angelus nonetheless.

90 (+?) pts

Ripe, dark and Brooding. Opened bottle 3 hrs prior and poured a taste. Could do with 3-5 hr decant as huge structure. Espresso, cocoa, blackcurrant primary. Pencil lead, & tar on the very long finish. At least 7-10 yrs till ready but hugely enjoyable experience with beef dinner. Powerful and awesome. Can't wait to explore my next in 5 yrs when she will be more open to romance.

Angela's Belated Birthday Dinner (Crown Wine Cellars, 18 Deep Water Bay Drive, Shouson Hill, Hong Kong): Popped and poured at a nightcap at our friends' home based on the alliteration with Angela's birthday (wine had been consumed beforehand). Deep and totally opaque black-purple in colour. Nose is immediately OMG!.....black slab, linear, perfectly crafted and machine-ground nose with an attractive back end of dried bunches of Thyme hanging in the sunshine...really classy. Palate is rich, deep-layered dark red fruit that is mouth-coatingly unctuous. Still very primary, but it is already showing a great balance of purity of fruit and acid/tannin tension for a still very youthful wine. Profoundly good in a belly-filling satisfying context - like a perfect top tier Californian Boardeaux blend (So you can understand why Robert Parker rated it so highly). Not much nuance on the palate at this stage, perhaps because it lacks the finesse and age of all the previous wines we had drank. Tannins are already integrating well. Still a work in progress. Good length but still too young to show real resonance. No doubting the quality of this wine....it was good enough to sober me up to take proper notes at the end of a very long evening. Thanks, Greg!

Licorice, floral, truffle, forest floor, Asian spice, coffee and jammy black plum liqueur make up the attention grabbing perfume. In the mouth, this is pure silk, velvet and cashmere. Rich, concentrated and with depth of flavor, this sublime St. Emilion wine will age for decades. I have high hopes current vintages will develop this level of complexity. Tasted at least 3 times on this trip from bottle and magnum, the wine consistently showed at this high level. With prices for the 2010 being as expensive as they are, for a top level bottle of Chateau Angelus, that is almost ready to drink, (2-3 years will add more complexity) this is worth buying.

You won't be shocked if I tell you Angelus is the permenant blind tasting champion in Bordeaux wines(the other candidate in my opinion is l'Eglise Client). So its upgrade to St-Emilion GCC "A" is not surprising. I think the 47% cabernet franc has a contribution to the quality of this vintage. As you know this is a grape variety not easy to handle but as long as full maturity obtained, it's amazing. Please take a glimp at Ausone, Cheval Blanc and farther Clos Rougeard. Cabernet franc there, has more elegant and lighter expression of Cabernet Sauvignon. This Angelus 2000 is still young, dark and opaque, with floral, cigar, plums and black current nose. The palate is as deep as its color and concentrated. Obviously it's not the best performance it would have, should wait for another 8 to10 years to uncork it.

deliscious. I started with a decant through a vinturi and had to hold back at least 2 ounces that had heavy sediment. Eye: Deep purple hue on decanting but was more ruby with a fairly clear rim after 3 hours in the decanter. The nose spoke of right bank earthyness (Hay and camphor and peanut butter of cab franc) and the palate had phenominal depth and purity and length. (parker#s =5+14+18+7=94) This is at the onset of its drinking window and will last but it is outstanding now so why wait?

Deep ruby/blue color. Lovely nose of sweet earth, violets and allspice. A young but powerful Angelus that's just beginning to drink well although it needs substantial breathing time to open up. This wine seems to have it all with a great floral lift, full middle-palate and intense concentration of black and blue fruits on the long, spicy finish. Yet to show much secondary flavor development but to me, this could be the finest Angelus ever made as everything is in place for greatness. It possesses more complexity already than any previous vintage. 95+

This is a wine whose hand is on the doorknob of the door to early adolescence, but the doorknob has yet to be turned. It is just about to turn a corner, but will require at least another 10 years to equal and possibly surpass the 89 and 90. Immensely enjoyable now, the nose screams right bank Bordeaux with aromas of black fruit, cherry liqueur, mineral driven earth, leather, stones, and pencil. The palate is very rich and full bodied, and offers a similar flavor profile as the nose with an emphasis on the black fruit and an exquisite pencil finish. The tannins are significant but do calm down with more air. Certainly a showstopper of a wine, this is worth back filling with given recent vintage pricing. Highly recommended! 97 Pts

Drank at dinner with Heinz and the gang. Dark red fruit nose and charcoal and almost brutal tannins at first but three hours in a decanter tamed the beast. Still powerful, but drinkable. The nose was shy but palate made up for it with dark red and black fruit, dark chocolate, charcoal and very good balance. The tannins are notable but not out of balance, not even on the finish. The wine has a great future.

Deep ruby in color, with a combination of black and blue fruit, floral, earth, licorice, coffee and truffle aromas, this suave, opulent, rich wine is filled with layers of lush, concentrated, ripe, sexy fruit and earth. There is not a hard edge to be found in this stunning St. Emilion. At 11, this is already a beautiful wine. It's going to be even better when it hits 21. As this probably sells for less than the cost of the 2009 or 2010, while expensive, if it's your style, (it's definitely mine), it's worth grabbing some.

Opened 2 hours before dinner, very intense nose of floral, minerals and some fruits, I almost thought of Left Bank, hmmm. Palate is still a bit tannic and not as smooth as I had hoped for, perhaps more time will help. That is why the lower score, for the nose, I would easily give 95+, very long lasting and still strong after 3 hours+

nose: very deep and powerful nose filled with tones of mineral rich earth, cedar, dark red cherries, dark berries, and spice box. Complex but still holding back a bit right now
taste: fuller bodied with chewy tannins that make themselves known. Deep with layered tones of cedar, mineral rich earth, dark red cherries, and dark berry tones
overall: this is still in need of time. This is a long haul wine that has the stuffing to be something tremendous

2000 Angelus rocks! Not a sophisticated TN, but it clearly expresses what this stunning wine is all about. Deep, dark, purple tinted hues are beautiful to look at. The nose is filled with a myriad of scents. The palate presence delivers endless layers of rich, ripe, black and red fruits. Very concentrated and complex. Perfectly balanced. With each sip, this wine got better and better. This is the type of wine you can spend hours with watching it develop in the glass. Easily at the level of the legendary 89 & 90… and possibly better, this is a spectacular Angelus! This wine will continue improving for 2-3 decades. This is a very special wine.

Blind tasted at Beddington's restaurant in Amsterdam. Apparently opened about 3 hours before tasting. Power! Chocolate, coffee nose and taste with berries and minerals. Very balanced and way too young to drink yet. Needs another 5 years or so. So different to the 2001 which is perfect right now.

Dark and youthful in the glass. Tasted upon opening and then decanted for 4hrs. Initially quite expressive nose, but seemed to get shy with air, showing ripe currants and plum, with berry over tones, coffee, and cedar. Concentrated palate, quite ripe and fruit forward, with cedar and asian spices, with just a hint of mature leather mixed in with blackberries and plum. Fine, dry, but sweet tannic backbone. Everything in balance. A big wine, with great complexity, not quite in its drinking window, but showing great promise.

Young but what a stunner. Deep ruby color all the way to the rim. Nose jumps out of the glass with vibrant red fruit, loads of licorice, chocolate and a bit of heat. Would have been happy to smell this all night. These notes continued into the mouth with a solid dose of tannin and acidity, though it was all in high voltage balance. Wonderful display of the fruit. This is easily drinkable now with a rich meal, but the complexities present today should intensify with age and the tannins integrate making this a huge one down the road.

Thanks to my good friend Sam for sharing this bottle. It was 10 years old and still very young. We let it air for an hour and when I first tasted it was tight with leather, game, manure, and some dark brooding berries. It opened very little over the next 45 minutes when we drank it with pork tenderloin and filet mignon, which it supported in fine style. This wine needs 5 more years before it will reward the drinker with it's full potential. You can keep yours safely tucked away for the next decade!

2000 Angelus might be a baby, but it's not too early to know how this wine will show at maturity. Licorice, blackberry, plum, black raspberry and chocolate aromatics open the gateway to layers of soft, velvety fruit and opulent textures. This sexy wine can be enjoyed today, but another 5 years is going to add a lot of complexity to this stunning wine.

Tasting Group Dinner - '75, '83 and '85 Bordeaux (Brad's House, Minneapolis): Popped and poured. I couldn't wrap my palate around this after tasting through several older wines. Dense, tannic, primal, and completely closed down. Massively structured, powerful, and monolithic on the palate. Did not budge after 3+ hours in the class. Do not open for many more years.

Popped and poured, consumed over 3 hours. Deep black and purple color. Brooding earthy nose at first, but opened up to reveal notes of black fruits infused with leather, coffee and licorice. Very concentrated on the palate and it got more voluptuous as the wine sat in the glass. Really sexy. Still very young and tannic but balanced by rich mouthcoating fruit. The finish is long but has some dryness to it. This wine obviously has many years to go, I would guess that in 10 years it will really be strutting (but who knows). This bottle threw a lot of sediment, so I recommend decanting to remove the sediment with the added benefit that the decant would help open up the wine.

If you're seeking a wine with explosive, complex aromatics accompanied by endless waves of sexy, hedonistic fruit with a finish as exciting as the French Open in a great year, look no further. I get to taste this wine fairly often and I can honestly say, it gets better with every tasting. In time, this will probably be better than the legendary 90. Still young, if you only have a few bottles, wait until at least 2015 to begin experiencing this wines incredible and ample charms

Tasting note:
Ripe red and blue berry fruit profile. There was also a fresh, sweet spiciness with herbal elements. Plenty of acidity in the structure with firm, maybe slightly greenish tannin. Would pick the lesser 2001 or 2002 vintages over this.

Emilion.

Eye: Violet-ruby jewel
Palate: plummy and currant and rich length at the back end and the nose comes back with smoke. Very captivating

Il a de la pureté et une grande longueur, mais a-t-on trop extrait, l'harmonie viendra-t-elle, avant qu'il ne s'assèche?
