I drank this bottle 2015 and back then it was on my top 10 best champagnes i ever tried.
Today 9 years later...well the wine has small fine bubbles left, around 3 of 5 on a scale. The cork was very silent with very weak pop and power, maybe 1 of 5. The scent has a touch of nuts, gunpowder, a little citrus.
Taste comes with a strong bitter lemon flavour, almost acidic, very sharp It feels the acid kills the complexity. Little semi sweet and very semi bitter.
The acid is so strong it makes the inside of my mouth rough.
I feel taste of maderization and oxidation. Kind of sherry. No real fruit and aromas left as the old good days in 2015. Sorry to say but prime time is over. I love Krug, but im not gonna lie, and i highly recommend to drink your bottles as soon as you can.
I think its really time to open this bottle up now, dont wait!
Still has one bottle left on Magnum,it will be interesting to open it up in future.
Score:
2015: 97-98 points.
2024: 85 points.

Burgundy Bachelor Party: From magnum this was killer, like aged Leflaive with bubbles. Great truly classic Champagne but… the aged Leflaive served after it was better.

classy oxidative note on the nose, beautifully integrated. not obtrusive. lime and marmalade, whiff of truffles. there is a surprising amount freshness as it moves through the palate to the finish. absolutely lovely. w/ beef tartare, stunning pairing.

Really interesting. This bottle was quite oxidized. There remained tons of energy and persistence. All toffee and nutty aromas. A touch of sweetness that was there at the beginning, went away after an hour or so and then came back several hours later. Not the best bottle, but still very interesting.

Killer nose, a crescendo of nutty, smoky and butterscotch like aromas. Vibrant and energetic palate, still quite youthful! It’s so complex, expressive and layered with the perfect balance of orchard fruit and secondary, tertiary characteristics. A gastronomic Champagne that is in a perfect place.

[Magnum] Fresh, clean, and most impressively a tight example. Good bubbles, middle weight, lots of caramel and toffee to the bruised yellow apple fruit. Quite smoky in a great way with some honey and butterscotch. Not overripe or overblown, intact and still has high tension. Could’ve been ‘88 easily. Great magnum.

Drunk for the first time in 2013 according to my notes, this Krug did not run out of breath. On the contrary, we find all that characterizes the house's champagnes: exceptional smoothness with a magnificent touch, a perfect balance with just the right amount of tension in the service of a totally loose material. It unfolds like a parchment, it's as precise as a piece of jewelry and we take great pleasure in it. The finish is very intense, with aromas of coffee.
Excellent.

Unexpectedly great bottle. Have had bottles of this that were oxidizing and getting over the hill, but this one had a good pop and was fresh and effervescent. Rich and full with light butterscotch notes and plenty of acidity.

Krug 1989 was disgorged in 1998 and had extra 14 years of bottle aging compared to Krug 1989 Collection tasted along side. It showed more signs of oxidation. It had this seductive tangerine citrus aroma and flavours, dark rye bread and coffee notes. 1989 vintage blend was dominated with Pinot Noir (47%), Chardonnay 29% and high proportion of Meunier (24%) which is usual for Krug.
Kuki'o Wine Trip 2019; 9/22/2019-9/28/2019 (Champagne & Bordeaux): Very round and open and losing its tension somewhat. Warm and inviting nose that has bruised apple, cinnamon, and beginning to develop light caramel too. More oxidative than you’d hope, sort of just hanging on. 92 - 93... Forgot to note this was at Chateau Margaux.

Opened with a soft sigh and provided moderate bubbles until the last sip.
Medium golden color and a explosive nose of... everything! There are oxidative notes, fresh candied fruit, white chocolate, toffee. It goes on and on. Similar flavors along with some ginger as well. The last sips had a delicious sweet and sour note. Finish is long and lovely.

Champagne - 100 Vintage and NV Champagne; 12/15/2015-12/15/2020: Wonderful mature Champagne nose with candied apple & cinnamon, vanilla, (I guess that makes apple pie) flowers, ginger. Not too oxidative for the fact that this is 30 years old. The palate stays fresh with fine perlage.

From Magnum Nose is explosive...candied ginger, flowers, citrus, orange marmalade, coffee, chocolate, earth, Xmas spice, mushroom, biscuit, brioche and minerals Palate is dense but here is where you see the impact of the vintage....just a touch lighter than what you see from a top, top vintage. Finish is long...coffee, chocolate, candied ginger, minerals, orange zest, flowers, mushrooms, earth and brioche.
Almost 95

A sigh on opening, persistent bead in the glass. Rich gold colour. Still fully sparkling in the mouth. Deep, concentrated caramel aroma, with rum, cooked orchard fruit, and maybe a little chocolate (but I have to say with wines like this, I don't get the masses of nuances others claim - it just smells of good mature champagne!). The taste is interesting: upfront acidity, then the midpalate opens out with lots of complexity. There's something sweet in the mouth but not on the tongue, if that makes sense - a sort of fragrance of sweetness without the sugar. After a few minutes, the acidity settles down and it's well balanced. Very similar to the Krug '95 for me - not a blockbuster, but a complete drink offering a lot of pleasure, and it probably will for many years to come. Not the favourite wine I tried this year but certainly in the top 5. [Cork + cage; 12% abv; Vintage Wine Gifts, £389.97 with a discount].

Short note (Christmas eve). Nose is deep and complex. Gunpowder, touch of wet grass, loads and loads of coffee, sherry, nuts. Palate is long, oxidative, but fully alive and very complex. Sweet honey, baked apples, sherry notes, spices and minerals. Long sweetish finish. Really a good wine for tonight, on peak now I would say, perhaps even slightly passed (?). I enjoyed it highly (while less wine interested parts of the family did not, good for me, more for me to enjoy).

Adding an anecdote that this review may be slightly faded as I brought these two bottles to The French Laundry the night after our weddings. Probably added something to the score but I did my best to be objective.
Of the two bottles served, one was good to great, the other was spectacular (understatement).
Color on the wine was burnt amber and deeply golden.
There was still a healthy amount of mousse and the nose was closer to....d’Yquem than anything else I could describe. Beautiful notes of fresh fruits and crisp acidity.
Definitely not past it’s prime and if you have a bottle, I hope you open and enjoy before it turns the corner.

Weekend in Napa; 7/5/2018-7/8/2018 (Napa, CA): Was fairly oxidized, nose was reminiscent of sherry, very nutty, honey, semisweet smelling, color was amber to brownish. Palate was typical Krug richness, very nice and assertive acidity with more sherry flavors of nuts and caramel. Effervescence was minimal, semi expected at this age. I enjoyed this enough but felt over the hill or possibly a flawed bottle (I am leaning toward flawed) thus I didnt score it. It felt very lackluster next to the 89 Cave Privée.

Definitely the Champagne of the night and #2 overall in a great line up of wines from Champagne, Burgundy, Bordeaux and Rhone. Original disgorgement circa 1998. Awesome color - medium amber. Really fresh and crisp. Light carmel. Some tobacco and cigar box. Highly complex wine with loads of nuance. Also comes off sweet and luscious. Fantastic.

Double the Blind Double the Pleasure: 1983-96 Grand Cru Burgundy: Served double blind. Or as double blind as one can serve a Krug with its telltale bottle shape. Most guessed the 90. This was a bit more advanced than the 90s that I have had. A bit less fizz and a bit more ripenness. Mushroom and honey notes. Acid picked up a bit by dinner (opened 1 hour prior) A bit more enjoyable than you would expect from an 89 Krug but not as impressive as a well kept bottle of 88 or 85.

This was fabulous. It's honey and caramel and brioche and that je ne sais quoi that makes a wine elegant and a bit etheral and something that even colleagues who are perhaps not the most wine-educated of folks stop and multiple times say 'this is different... this is special'. Great price at a restaurant in Toronto and glad that we just pulled the trigger because this was the kindof wine experience that winos like myself chase where it makes you stop and say 'this is special'. Really enjoyed it.

Mid to full old gold. Very spicey and really quite exotic on the nose initially before settling back to a more subdued gingery spice. Lots here. Ginger notes follow through to the palate. Rich, vinous but with a little more spine and line through its big frame than the NV alongside. Again, lots here, and holds well in the glass over a couple of hours. ****1/2

Delightful Champagne! This is all 1989 with a generous, oily and somewhat fat/ripe presentation. Rich is a good word. But under all that matiere, there is still an important line of acidity that keeps this Champagne interesting and aging well. There are signs of maturity now with some significant mushroom, yeasty and toasty notes. The wine is certainly not in decline, but might have reached a peak that should last many years. Delicious drinking right now.

KRUG Tasting (Zurich, Switzerland): What a shame. The bottle had a slight cork. Just had the 1989 some time ago and it was a clear 95 point wine. .Despite the imperfection it was still drinkable but just not a representative bottle. Now mature with at least another decade of hedonistic drinking.

Magnum. Comparable to the '96 enjoyed alongside but with less smoke and more / deeper caramel and brioche on the nose. Still fresh and sharp on the palate with waxy honeycomb, sharp orange citrus, and hardening aged Gouda. Toasty brioche present throughout. Strong effervescence an hour after popping. Spectacular wine to drink right now.

Maturing notes, almost reminds me of the 93 Taittinger Comtes. Has the Krug oxidative profile (rich, yeast) and impressive persistence but not the acid like the '96. An outstanding wine and always a treat but I prefer the 88/90/95/96. Can be enjoyed now but no harm in letting it age another decade.

golden honey colour - quite sweet, very rich and biscuity... dare i say "lucozade", but in no way meaning to be derogatory - developed a rich complexity with 30 minutes. not much fizz at all - altogether more sophisticated.. this is very vinous, with a rich texture, and buttery character - simply NOT for the amateur.... complex and intellectual. gorgeous.

2013 editon of En Primeur - Kelly and Kevin’s excellent adventure; 3/26/2014-4/1/2014 (Mostly in Bordeaux and a night in Paris): When it comes to a mature vintage Krug and how wonderful it will show, the freshness becomes one of the biggest factors. This was a stunningly fresh example. Ripe yellow fruits, golden delicious, apple pie, fresh orange rind, brioche, baked spices and smoke. Very complete palate impression showing just the right amount of fruit, mineral and acidity. Perfectly harmonious and balanced. So seamless no need to analyze but just enjoy.

Wow! Incredible right from the go. Initially there were prominent aromas of yeast, caramel, and toffee. Flavors were green apple and lemon and minerals all delivered with incredibly lush layers. Later on the caramel and toffee turned into coffee. Fabulous wine paired with great food and wonderful company. Enjoyed by all.

not as fresh as the 88 i recently had, but still a damn fine drink. golden hue, massive baked apple with freshly baked wheat bread with a caramel oxidative note that you wouldn't want to be anymore than it was. bubbles were exactly where i would expect them to be at this point. would definitely buy again, but the 88 is slightly better.

Medium golden - the color of a good whiskey. Smokey, like a campfire had blown over lemons mixed with honey a slight petrol smell like you'd expect with an older riesling at the top. Only a few tiny bubbles.
Very honied creme brûlée (only the top burnt part) on the palate, with toasted coconut, lemon curd and yeast. Still has enough lift to keep it going.... very interesting Champy.

Mad for Magnums (Ai Fiori - New York NY): From magnum. I'm not always a fan of 1989 Champagne but this wine really outperformed my expectations, much like it did at the same magnum dinner in 2010. Lots of very ripe stone fruit aromas with plenty of toasted brioche character, then somewhat similar on palate but with the verve and energy that keeps everything from seeming soft. Long and incredibly elegant.

Krug Vintage tasting (Stockholm): Appearance: Golden yellow Nose: Powerful nose of ripe yellow fruit, oranges, some fudge, some dried fruit and raisins, smoke and impressions of sweet fruit, rather noticeable nuttiness, a hint of oak barrel notes. Palate: Very good concentration, fruity, oranges, peach, red apple, good acidity (about the same level as the 1985), some mineral, foody style. Fresh finish and fruity aftertaste with a hint of bitterness. Summary: Fully mature, but not really old. Reminds me slightly of a good Bollinger.

From magnum - my last... I have never, ever been anything other than totally delighted by the Krug 89. This was so complex and long with delicious honey flavours, certainly an oxidative style, but just sumptuous. The mouthfeel was exquisite - the mousse plentiful, but soft and even. Outstanding Christmas Champagne - I'm seriously thinking about swapping some of my 1990 for 1989 - a couple of recent magnums of 1990 were pale in comparison...

Acker Merrall Inaugural Chicago Auction (Trump International Hotel): From magnum. Big fruit, lush and opulent, but showing the maturity level I've come to expect from the 1989 vintage. Rich golden yellow, fine beads although streams were pretty subtle. Big yeasty nose of brioche and toast, honey & overripe apples. Unctuous! Toast spread with apple butter, lemon curd, some caramel and a hint of florals. Looooooong finish, with a perfect zing of acidity that makes you go, "Wait, HOW old is this again?" Just an incredible experience to enjoy this wine - it is everything and more that I'd want from an aged Champagne.

Hey, this is a real serious champagne! Fabulous and highly exotic complex nose of honey, honeysuckle with spices and white fruits leads to a very fresh, complex, certainly great depth palate along with bright high tones acidity with underneath sweetness of red cherry, pear, green apple, citrus fruits, fresh fig and even a touch of earth. Vigor, layer and layer, immense balance and power leads all the way through to the finish which goes on and on with spices and mineral undertones. Wow! This is still so fresh and young, not at its peak yet. The palate became rounder and more elegant after 3hours in the glass. Krug, impressive an stylish. my WWOTN. Buy - Yes.

Simple Series IV: Dave's Birthday (Victoria Peak, Orchard Central): Really excellent. This was a serious Champagne. Golden yellow in colour, bead had faded somewhat. Took awhile to take off, but after some 15 minutes in the glass, the nose showed a panoply of aging Champagne aromas - umami-laden Chicken-in-a-Biscuit cracker scents, deeper chicken stock notes, truffly earth, slightly browned apples, kumquats, a hint of high-toned flowers, yeast, and a gentle nuttiness in the background. Very nice. Palate was amazingly youthful, even a bit tight on the attack at first, showing primarily the clean, minerally backbone of the wine. With time, it opened up into layered white meat and white fruit flavours, a touch of peach at the edges, some lemons, all laced with great freshness and held up by a firm, but very finely chiselled sense of structure. Still tight, but very noble, very masculine I thought, with tons of cut and finesse. Finish had just incredible length, with tons of minerality, and profound depth, with more chicken essence, lemons, mushrooms and pinpricks of spice just going on and on in the mouth. A superb Champagne, with plenty of room to go, we caught it just as it was coming out of adolescence into maturity I think.

Attractive deep yellow color with strong bubbles, this Champagne was right on the mark. The nose and the flavors in the mouth were the same and were focused on citrus, toffee, and apple. It had very nice length. I used to go crazy for these Krugs but now sometimes I find the toastiness to be a bit much. This wine showed quite well.

Table 21, Volt, Frederick, MD. Medium gold in the glass with the finest of mousses typical of Krug. Medium bodied with aromas and flavors of dough and lemon. Very elegant. Drank 3 bottles amongst friends in London and every one was near perfect. After 20 years of ageing the quality is shining through. You can really taste and smell the yeast and nutty textures. As with some other notes it does need time to open up and there is still lots of acidity at first.

Brought to Acker auction at Cru - Served from Magnum. The nose was was great all night with yeast and chocolate croissant. The palate took a while to come around. Quite a bit of acidity as first and some dull flavors. After about 3 hours the fruit started to come through and the body got bigger. Krug minerality was there along with almonds and some lemon and caramel.

I was petrified that I'd stored this too warm but the nose revealed that this wine wasn't going to dissapoint. The nose was more subdued than I had expected but very complex with yeast, ginger and that strange coolness that you get with half-bottles of the grande cuvee. (creme fraiche perhaps?) The palate showed this to be a big wine with vanilla and a finish that lasts for ages. Reminds me of the Bollinger style but with a kind of almost milkiness on the mid palate. I got this wine in a very good deal. Sadly with the way that prices are heading this is probably my last and first bottle of vintage Krug. : (

Studio Restaurant (@ The Montage Resort In Laguna Beach): I drink so little of champagne, most especially, fine champagne. A mag of this shows up towards the latter half of the meal as a palate cleanser. Just one of those rare nights. My sensory perception on things like this--particularly after I have had 10 wines (and spitting was nowhere to be found last night)--was a bit dulled. Nutty, oxidative, characteristic Krug flavors - almond extract, orange oil, and some darker fruits. Well balanced all around with an integrated dosage and prickly bead. Full-bodied and round flavors. Darn, drank the bottle while it was too cold. Fortunately, Hugh saved a bit for sampling after dinner at Mark's LO. Champagne Offline - Revenge of the Fizz (Snows - London): Classic gunpowder nose, so easy to spot blind (easy to say when tried not blind!). Not as forward as I would have exected from the 1989, maybe a later disgorgement, a little more acidity and I would have said this was the 1988.

Boy is this drinking like a dream right now. The rich expansive nose contains loads of spices (especially cinnamon and nutmeg) in addition to the slightly oxidized nutty, yeasty aromas of aged champagne. This is the meaty side of Krug, very, very rich and caramely. It's fully mature without a doubt and what it gives up in elegance it makes up it sheer power. Outstanding in a very Krug way. Held very well in the glass.

It was wonderful to taste this again as it was the first Krug wine I ever tasted. This wine is enormously deep and rich - indeed mouth-filling - with flavors of baked brioche, peaches, and hazelnuts and a long, lingering finish.

Medium gold color. Dry, very complex with minerals, toast and a creamy mouthfeel. Unmistakably Krug but lacks some body next to the 1988 and the 1990 releases. This is splitting hairs though when a wine is this good. [$$$; Ready to drink now; Served with sushi]

Consumed with osetra caviar at Ken Johnson's Big Bear cabin. Bottle provided by Amy Weinberg. Medium straw-gold with very brisk, tiny bead. Explosive nose, showing a bouquet of bread dough, pine nuts, truffles and almonds. Full-bodied on the palate, with excellent crisp acidity and similar flavors as for the nose. The finish goes on and on. Hedonisim at its best!

From Woodland Hills Wine Company, California ($149). The ‘89 vintage of Krug seems to be slightly overlooked by the cognoscenti, but for no good reason. It’s great even by lofty Krug standards. Tight cork, loud pop. Light to medium gold. Explosive furious mousse of average size bubbles. Fascinating complex aromas of oak, grilled nuts, smoke and a hint of caramel. Palate staining intensity. Scintillating combination of power and elegance. Still young, will benefit from a few more years of bottle age. A masterpiece.

A wonderful nose of roasted nuts and mangoes reminded me of one of the richer, more exotic dry Zind-Humbrecht wines. In the mouth it was rich, resplendent, and truly vinous as well as crisp and lively. A great champagne.

The next dinner we started with Krug 1989 - unbelievably good champagne that feels more like a bubbly great white burgundy in richness and length. Great aged characters on nose and palate - amazing concentration and yeasty flavours - the best champagne I have had - showed much better than when first tasted a year ago. Should age really well. 96pnts - humbles Dom Perignon 1990.

A nose of custard and hazelnuts.
Excellent.

Krug Collection vs Krug Vintage vs Krug Grande Cuvee (Jurmala, Latvia): 🏅Rating 97/100 (4,7⭐)

Great price at a restaurant in Toronto and glad that we just pulled the trigger because this was the kindof wine experience that winos like myself chase where it makes you stop and say 'this is special'.

Really good in the toasty Krug style, while not my preferred style in these types of vintages, works really nicely here.

2000 Burgundy Dinner (Tucson, AZ): Had this while browsing a restaurant's cellar. The nose was rather subtle with some lemon curd, brioche and white florals. The palate was elegant and noticeably aged with only a subtle bead. Great tones on the palate - vanilla, white flowers, subtle honeycomb, and toast. Could have sipped this all night.

The long finish highlights the acidity in this wine very well as it just dissipates very slowly from the palate. Outstanding. Thanks Chris K for this great Anniversary gift! 50+13+13+9+9 = 94

Surprisingly less caramelly and bready and more citric than previous bottles and therefore it came across as surprisingly youthful.
