This was a critique on what a renowned vigneron can do in a lousy vintage. On opening, translucent ruby with substantial clear rim; classic Vogue nose/palate of a mountain of brooding fruit nearly completely obstructed by a more immediate wall of tannic structure. It is a lesson in how this Domaine’s wines never seem ready but when you open one and follow it over several hours, it can be quite intriguing. Slowly opened to some really nice underlying character, becomes more floral, spicy and complex while the textural grip loosens. Still a fairly firm style that can disappoint anyone looking for softer, more complex, relaxed and ethereal, evolved burgundy. On 2nd day, still stretching it’s legs. Some day I will open a Vogue wine that’s ready to go! I do have a ‘78 Musigny, hmmm,...

Wine tasted 2 hours after opening. The vintage shows. Hard and steely tannins. Not very enjoyable first although it got better at the end. Not worth the money.

Part of a mixed vertical tasting of Bonnes Mares. This was riper than the 90 tasted just prior. Fruit much more prominent, but also more characteristically Burgundian. Some Asian spice as well. Silky mouthfeel.

A private lunch (Le Petit Bistro, Hotel The Grand, Amsterdam, NL): Pristine bottle, imported by Mentzendorff. Fully mature appearance, almost bricked through; wonderfully perfumed nose, rosehip, undergrowth, red earth, good depth, mature, warm but transparent; the palate is surprisingly rounded and ripe, good weight for the vintage, mature but lively, lovely balance, supported by good grip of firm but ripe tannins, mineral freshness, hint of nuttiness in the flavours; very good length, develops a cold tea note after about an hour. Very nice surprise from an off vintage. Drink up.

Elegant and silky but a bit linear in the mid palate and medium on the finish. This is a good wine, but not sure how much this will develop further.
