Not quite what I had hoped for... I held on to these for a long time given both the Gouges style of wine making and the often ferocious tannins associated with the 95 vintage. Not surprisingly this wine showed a very solid structure with tannins very present, astringent, after 27 years... The disappointing part was that the wine didn't have the other components to balance it. You're left with a hard shell and very little stuffing... A lamb burger turned out to be a good pairing for this wine, but I expected more...

10th of 12, opened 30 minutes, perfect cork and level, previous notes VG or better with 2 corked bottles - another of these 95s which has always looked promising but failed to deliver, now a translucent dark ruby with some development on rim; plum/cherry with touch of sous bois, little meat, game or spice, pure not sauvage; medium bodied, some silk, decent length and persistence if tad dilute, now mature but no rush, nice enough but a bit lacking somewhere, and certainly no wow. VG+ (16.5)......it says something when last Monday's Lecheneaut Cailles 95 is preferred to a Gouges Vaucrains!

Lovely clear colour, but the tannins and the acidity have overtaken the fruit, and this is hard work without much reward at the moment. I fear it always will be.

Very dark color still, with a reticent nose. This wine is still overpowered by its tannins. Although there is fruit, it needs several years still for the tannins to soften. I'm not sure if the fruit will hold up to them. B+/A-
