Comes across a bit bigger and younger than I recall - the last bottle Jay opened was absolutely ready to drink, but this still seems to be getting there. The flavours are very pretty - bright cherry and some darker berried fruit with lots of developed earthy and mushroom notes, but the lingering tannin on the finish suggests this needs a bit more time.

A small sendoff for Salil as he moves to flyover country and a happy birthday to Jay! (Chelsea Wine Storage.): A wine for fans of structure. Still quite tough with big tannins leading the way and not quite enough fruit to stand up to them fully at this point. What cherry is present is enjoyable, but there's a lot more forest things going on in the form of earth, mushrooms and tree bark. Give it some more time soften and just hope there's enough fruit remaining to enable it to show better than it does now. B+/B.

A Gouges that's actually ready to drink! Talk about a rare creature. Pretty red berried fruit, black cherries, smoke, and some more savoury earthy and mushroom notes, all conveyed with grace and polish on a medium weight frame. The tannin seems nicely integrated, and there's bright acidity beneath that keeps it very fresh and lively.

(Domaine Henri Gouges Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Vaucrains) Bricking medium red color with pale meniscus; roses, red fruit, berry nose; a little tight, minerally, tart red fruit, dried cherry palate; medium-plus finish

Robust, bit of iron, takes a bit of time to unwind, but lovely nose after an hour open.
