Introduction

This was a highly anticipated UGC for me. I enjoyed last year's, but the hype around the vintage had me thinking this would be much more up my alley. UGC came back to the Drake after being away for a year (though I liked last year's spot better in all honesty).

Flight 1 - Graves Reds and Whites (18 Notes)

  • 2010 Château Rahoul 85 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves

Nose: Nice nose of dark red fruits, smoke, and some dark red cherries as well. This is lacking some depth on the nose sadly.

Taste: Medium bodies with medium acidity and good youthful tannins. Sadly it is lacking depth and a mid-palate with tones of dark red fruits, dark red cherries, and cedary tones as well.

Overall: What was a nice nose was left wanting in the palate. It's hard to say if it will flesh out, but it would be a much better wine if it does.

Taste: Light bodied with crisp, but very noticeable, medium/high acidity. The tones of citrus, minerals, and white fruits have a real freshness to them.

  • 2010 Château Pape Clément Blanc 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Taste: Medium bodied with very noticeable medium/high acidity. The structure is fairly imposing along with tones of toast, white fruits, marshmallow, and citrus.

Overall: This does need some time to come into harmony. There is good balance to it and though there is oak there, it doesn't seem to dominate the other fruit.

  • 2010 Château Pape Clément 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Nose: This is definitely a brutish nose with rich tones of kirsch, new oak, dark red fruits, smoke, dark red cherries, licorice, and spice box.

Taste: Full bodied with big and thrashing tannins. It is lacking some of a mid-palate though as there is a thinning after the attack. Still, there are very good tones of kirsch, new oak, dark red cherries, smoke, and spice box underneath the structure.

Overall: While this is in the more extracted camp, there is some real good material there. The thinning on the mid-palate is a bit troubling, but if it can flesh out then something great can emerge.

Nose: There is a noticeable smokiness an nutty quality right away that then leans into tones of spiced pears, white fruits, and some oils and minerals.

Taste: Lighter bodied with medium/high acidity that makes itself known. The tones of spiced pears, minerals, oils, and roasted nuts are well balanced and with good depth.

Overall: This is certainly on the young side. It will need some time to sort together as the structure is pretty big at the moment. This is a quality blanc that can get better.

Taste: Medium bodied with medium acidity and big chewy tannins. While medium bodied, there is a thinness to it along with tones of leather, red berries, tobacco and red fruits.

Overall: Not sure what's happened here. The palate is just lacking a bit and the nose isn't all too giving either. This is normally a favorite, but while this is a good wine, I was expecting something better.

  • 2010 Château Grand Mayne 87 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Nose: This shows some extraction and lack of depth with tones of spices, liqueur, licorice, cedar, and dark red fruits. While there's some complexity, it's more surface and slightly portish.

Taste: Medium bodied with medium acidity and some hard tannins. The tones of dark red fruits, licorice, liqueur, and spices are a bit brutish as well and very rough around the edges.

Overall: This was more towards the extracted side, but not overdone. It's very rough around the edges and it's hard to tell where this will go.

  • 2010 Château La Dominique 89 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Nose: There is a nice fragrant take to the nose with tones of incense, dark red fruits, spice box, and some tones of black cherries.

Taste: Medium bodied with medium acidity and nice tannins. The tannins aren't as overwhelming as other 2010s, but the mid-palate is on the thinner side. Still, there are nice tones of dark red fruits, spice box, black cherries, and some tobacco.

Overall: If the mid-palate had some more flesh it would be a real pretty wine. This does feel like an earlier drinking wine, so it will be interesting to see if it does put on some more weight.

Overall: There is a load of class to this wine. It is sexy and gorgeous right now, but this could be out of this world with age.

Flight 3 - Margaux (13 Notes)

  • 2010 Château d'Angludet 85 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Nose: Nice and straight forward nose with tones of red cherries, cedar, berries, and some purple florals

Taste: Medium bodied with medium acidity and nice tannins. The tannins aren't too big and the mid-palate is a bit watery. The wine thins out and has nice tones of cedar, berries, leather, and red cherries.

Overall: This was disappointing on the palate. It was lacking and while there were youthful tannins there, it seems like it would be very hard to fully come together.

Taste: Medium bodied with medium acidity and some very chewy tannins. It is lacking on the mid-palate and it does thin out somewhat. There are nice and balanced tones of dark red fruits, cedar, spice box, and dark red cherries.

Overall: The thinning on the mid-palate was a bit disappointing. There is good material there if it can come into form.

Nose: This had a lot of class on the nose with well balanced tones of dark red cherries, brown spices, cedar, dark red fruits and some funk tones in there as well.

Taste: Medium bodied with medium acidity and some chewy tannins. Beneath the tannins are silky tones of dark red cherries, spices, cedar, and dark red fruits.

Overall: This has some real quality to it. It certainly needs time, but what is there is really good. This could be a real knockout with the right amount of age.

  • 2010 Château Léoville Barton 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Nose: The nose is pretty tight and unyielding with some tones of tobacco, cedar, cassis, dark red cherries, and dark red fruits poking through.

Taste: Full bodied with massive and grippy tannins. The structure is fairly brutal, but there are very nice tones of cedar, tobacco, cassis, and dark red cherries lying underneath.

Overall: This is an insanely young wine. But, this can be an absolute stunner with the right amount of age. The structure is very imposing, but there is a behemoth of a wine just waiting to come out.

Taste: Medium bodied with nice tannins, but the feel is on the lighter side and lacking on the mid-palate a bit. There is nice balance with tones of dark red fruits, dark berries, cedar, and kirsch tones.

Overall: This is a nice boreaux, but it is lacking a slight bit. It is more of a mid-term wine and it's hard to tell how it will develop.

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Nose: Deep and pungent nose filled with tones of camphor, graphite, dark red cherries, tobacco, cedar, and dark red fruits. There is a tightness to the nose, but there is a good intensity to it right now.

Taste: Medium/full bodied with medium acidity and some massive tannins. The tannins are on the punishing side, but there are wonderful tones of graphite, dark red cherries, cranberries, cedar, and tobacco tones.

Overall: This is a monster in the making. The structure is massive, but so is the depth and power behind the tones. This will need a lot of rest to show at it's best, but it should reward the patience.

Nose: This had a sumptuous nose with deep tones of pencil lead, dark red cherries, cranberries, cedar, and some licorice and black currant jam. While this leans to a more forward style, it is an impressive nose nonetheless.

Taste: Medium/full bodied with big and chewy tannins. The tannins are oppressive, but there are sleek tones of pencil lead, tobacco, dark red cherries, and black currant jam.

Overall: This does need a good amount of time. It will be interesting to see how this develops as it has a more forward nature than it used to. Still, this was a real winner and should reward some long aging.

Taste: Medium bodied with good tannins. The mid-palate is lacking a bit and there is the green note along with tones of dark red cherries, cedar, and spice box.

Overall: I wasn't fully sure what to make of this. It was lacking a slight bit and there was a green streak that was surprising.

Nose: Deep and brawny nose with tones of dark red cherries, tobacco, cranberries, cedar, and dark berry tones. While this is showing great depth and class, it is very tight and it takes a bit to get everything.

Taste: Full bodied with big and chewy tannins. The structure is very imposing with the tannins almost being a 1 foot thick wall. Still, there is a lot to like underneath the tannins with tones of dark red cherries, cranberries, tobacco, and dark berry tones.

Overall: This is brutally young right now. This is a Pichon Baron for the future and it will need it. There is a ton to like and this could be on the same level as the 90 down the road.

Taste: Medium/full bodied with medium acidity and some very noticeable tannins. The structure is certainly there, but it takes on more of a silky quality along with feminine tones of dark red cherries, red florals, cedar, and tobacco tones.

Overall: This is what a young Lalande is about. It shows the feminine side while also having a good dose of class to it. It needs time to show everything off, but it should reward patience.

Taste: Medium/full bodied with crisp medium acidity. Very polished with some nice layering already and gorgeous tones of apricots, pears, citrus, and nectarines.

Overall: This is a stellar wine that needs time. It has all the class and polish one would want from Climens and it should emerge even more with age.

Taste: Medium/full bodied with lower acidity. It is slightly flabby, but there are nice tones of green apples, nectarines, apricots, and some white fruits.

Overall: The lack of real acidity could be a real problem down the road. Still, it's enjoyable right now and is probably best to be drunk more in the mid-term.

Nose: Nice and fresh nose with tones of nectarines, green apples, grapefruit, and pears. Decent depth, but there was a slight simplicity to this.

Taste: Medium bodied with medium acidity. It isn't as fresh as the better stickies, but still has nice tones of nectarines, green apples, and pear tones with a touch of apricots.

Overall: A nice and straightforward sauternes. This was more in the middle of the pack, but is still a nice sticky and should age well.

Nose: This was had a more upfront quality with tones of nectarines, pears, apricots, and white fruits. There is good depth, but a sappiness to it as well.

Taste: Full bodied with a real richness to it, though the medium acidity isn't as crisp as would be preferred. Balanced, with very good depth and tones of white fruits, apricots, and nectarines.

Overall: This was a bit larger scale than I would've expected. If it can come into full balance with age this can be something beautiful.

  • 2010 Château La Tour Blanche Sauternes 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

Nose: There is a nice freshness and higher toned quality to the nose with tones of papaya, citrus, pears, white fruits, and green apples. Nice depth, but not too layered at the same time.

Taste: Medium bodied with medium acidity. It's lacking some of the botyrtis feel and it feels more like an auslese from a botyrtis vintage. Still, there are very nice and crisp tones sof papaya, citrus, white fruits, and some green apples.

Overall: This was one of the more individual sauternes in the tasting. As noted, it seemed more like an auslese than what I would expect from a sauternes.

Nose: Nice and fresh tones of white fruits, pears, apricots, and green apples. Decent depth, but it's lacking some expression that would be really nice.

Taste: Medium/full bodied with medium acidity, this seems to lack some depth and verve on the palate. There are very nice tones of white fruits, apricots, and green apples.

Overall: This is a nice and straightforward sauternes. It does lack some expression and verve, but it provides some enjoyment as well. It should develop with age and lose some of the baby fat that is currently on it.

  • 2010 Château Suduiraut 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

Nose: There is real good depth to this with a wonderful expression as well. The tones of white peaches, apricots, green apples, and pears favor a slightly more rich take, but work well together already.

Taste: Full bodied with medium+ acidity that is nice and refreshing. While slightly bigger, it doesn't feel to be too big and has succulent tones of white peaches, green apples, and pears.

Overall: This was extremely enjoyable and needs a good amount of time to fully come around. There is real good expression to this right now and a good amount of depth. While it isn't an all-time Suduiraut, it has a lot of potential to be something great.

Closing

This was much more of a mixed bag than I anticipated. While this is an extremely good vintage on the whole, it is far from uniform and there were some mid-palate issues with a lot of wines I came across. The successful wines were something spectacular, but the this left me wanting on the whole.
