1959 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche

La Tâche Grand Cru Pinot Noir more

Tasted blind, this wine had a red center and light orange rims. The medium+ intensity nose wasn't showing much. It seemed more like an ancient CDP rather than a Burgundy. What is counter intuitive about wines like this is that even though they seem like they might be over the hill, they really need air to bring them back to life and resuscitate their flavor profile.

After a few hours, the medium+ intensity nose offered up black cherries, anise, brown spices, and candle wax. As it aired, the wine developed classic Rhubarb notes.

Again, this wine was not particularly special in the mouth for the first hour or two and it slowly came out of its shell. Toward the end, it had light, rounded tannin, solid acidity, excellent balance, and fantastic length. It had a slight roasted quality that suggested a warm year.

This wine moved up from a 92 point wine to 97 over the course of 5 hours in a decanter. Open it early and try not to drink it before it can reveal itself!

Very interesting. Much more floral, stem, celery, herbal notes on the nose than previous bottles...almost to a fault imo. Spice. Great fruit, acid and balance. Complex. ? off bottle.

Birthday lunch for Mike and Andrew: A beautiful, fragrant bouquet. Intense, precise and high toned. Complex and multi-layered including aromas of violets, gentle mixed spices, black and red berries, minerals etc, framed by discreet vanillin oak. In the mouth, intense perfection. It achieves that rare combination of real power with lightness of touch that only great wines can. It is very pure and clean and yet the flavour profile is detailed and multi-layered, with a seam of rocky minerality throughout. The serious architecture is disguised in the sleek, seamless package. The acidity is gorgeous and the tannins are superb, ultra-fine grained and suave. It’s only a baby of course. Hold it for as long as you have the patience. I guessed it was a 2002 and then a 1998 La Tâche – it seemed inconceivable it could come from any other Burgundy vineyard. Thanks Mike.

This was my first time tasting la Tâche and it’s true that there really is nothing like it. Power without weight, the flavors just explode on the pallet. The depth of flavors stunning and I am sure if given more air or bottle age this will be a near perfect wine.

Normally don’t post restaurant wines on here. But gotta post the DRC note. Drank at Fresh Run Farm for the “Quince at The Farm” lunch series in northern Cali. Soaring aromatics, tremendous complexity and crazy expressive. Red raspberries, exotic spices, roses, fine acidity and an energetic and ample mid-palate with a seamless balance and a finish for days. Absurdly delicious even at this stage.

If you’re going to open a young La Tache, the 2017 is a vintage to consider. Surprisingly open, and simply delicious. One of the group had opened a couple in Beaune recently, so we carried the theme back to MN. Most of the CT notes here are spot on.

Tasted in a arrivage tasting of all DRC 2019. Overall, the 2019s DRC are beautifully perfumed, very ripe wines, but they also carry a nice vein of acidity that is making them brighter and fresh. The bottles show incredible class, but also a certain ripeness that might be something that needs getting used to for purists. I thought that the terroir was showing beautifully, despite the ripeness of the year. The wines seemeed very different and true to their cru, especially at the beginning of the tasting and again with quite some air. In between the differences were just a tiny bit muddled.
If I remember correctly the first vintage of this wine at DRC from 4 plots that are owned by Bonneau de Martray. Slightly reductive notes of matchstick, but also lemon oil, citrus, flintstone, white flowers, wet stone, beautiful minerality. It‘s medium-full bodied, with medium-high acidity adding precision and tension, very good persistence too. Very long finish with building complexity. A superbly fresh, complex and layered Corton-Charlemagne and a fantastic premier. I personally liked this better than the Montrachet next to it (which was a clear step up in body, richness and probably also complexity).

Last of the DRC I purchased for $20 per bottle. Glad the crew was able share in a legendary wine experience.

Blind: But I knew what it was because I gave it to FMIII to share with Nordhoff. Well, all three of us were sitting at the table so I suspected it might show up in the blind bag. Love the feminine, lightly ripened strawberry flavor with sandlewood. I love sandlewood in Pinot, Grenache, and I guess everything else. Still alive and kicking with a nice tannin foundation in support. Nordhoff thought it was Rhy Swan Terrace. Ha ha!!! Good for Kevin Harvey I guess because it did show like a Rhy but with more age on it.

DRC on 24 April 2018 (Le Restaurant, Moscow): 97/100

Dark and a notch cloudy Richebourg, pensive and melancholic.

Classic burnt notes somewhat subdued, with mint, menthol, and dark berries, juicy yet a bit jammy.

Looks overly aged for its humble seventeen, as if it were a teenage boy who matured too fast - but now it’s at the top of its prime, quiet and winking slyly.

I wouldn’t keep it for long.

A 62.5-ml Coravin pour at 67 Pall Mall in London. Transparent brick color, a bit of sediment. Astonishingly complex nose of barbecue sauce, orange peel, menthol/Vicks VapoRub, Bloody Mary, smoke, and earth. I've come across many of these scents in other wines before, but never on the same glass. Tremendous concentration and density in the mouth for a wine with so little extraction. Old-wine viscosity and length. I would have liked this more 5-10 years ago--the fruit is all gone now, leaving this a bit too cerebral for my palate. But this is still a mesmerizing wine I will never forget.

Dinner at Tetsuya's: Served blind. Incredibly perfumed and pretty floral notes then spice, musk, cherry and a just a smidge of earth. On the palate it is so relaxed, composed and classy, especially next to the very tense/taut 2009. Very long, with considerable depth to it. I was surprised when this was revealed, but maybe I shouldn't have been as I think it might be impossible to go wrong with DRC in 2006.

Domaine de la Romanee conti 2018 Tasting and Dinner; 4/29/2021-4/30/2021 (Le Bernardin): In a word, I found this wine mystical. It left me pondering much longer than any of the other wines in the lineup; a spell of time only matched by the length of the finish.

On the nose, I found it almost savory. It was like a bit of salted butter on top of a warm brioche. Unexpected. The flavors and texture were just sublime with a bit of everything floral and spice supported by nice tannins. A joyful and contemplative experience.

Some people have asked for ratings of the 2018s. Here are my thoughts (today / potential).

RSV (93 / 94)
Rich (97 / 97)

Three hours of air before serving. Spice, green stems, coffee beans, perfume and red currant. Very good acidity and precise red fruit. No doubt alluring but the palate was on a slightly leaner side which is not surprising for the vintage. 94+

Wax covered an authentic drc capsule. Cork came out intact. Lovely Ruby color with orange tint at the edge. Sweet aroma of ripe berries, honey. Very much alive and blossoming. Palate was greeted with an initial slight sweetness that transformed into ripe, red berries flavors. Very smooth and pure. Mild acidity provided some freshness. No tannins were detected. This had a delicious factor but was not heavy in any way. Very, very nice bottle of Pinot noir. This was served after a 1959 Latour. I have to give it to the Latour as the better of the two.

At my favorite wine bar in Bordeaux without an equal @aux4coinsduvin . Incredible wine list, Great people and cool atmosphere. The night started with 2017 Domaine Bachelet Charmes-Chambertin VV and ended with this 2018 Domaine de la Romanee Conti (DRC) Richebourg. Both were incredible - Bachelet was the winner.

My first Richebourg, and while super young it provides a tremendous view inside this incredible terroir - it fires out of the glass with raw coiled power of red fruits and mineral with great balance and an ever lasting tantalizing spice that runs through the palate. While the wine is of course young, too young for full enjoyment, it’s the spice I keep coming back to over and over. Beautiful wine in its infancy building to what will become a tremendous treasure in the coming years. Fantastic.
