Chardonnay - White Burgundy vs the Rest of the World (Mike's House): I had this wine 3 years ago, and this bottle was 3 points better. Correlation? There is a fair amount of matchstick and sulfur on the nose, and even a bit on the palate. But the palate is dominated by golden fruit with some minerality. There is good balance here. This was the most interesting wine at the tasting.

Brought to a tasting. This wine stood out from the others in the lineup as just more interesting and complex. Ripe yet with mineral, unusual for a Cali chardonnay. Definitely one of the group's favorites.

Very nice 5 years in. Popped and poured and enjoyed with a 2015 Domaine Tempier Bandol Rose. It was a nice pairing; the Liquid Farm has gotten better with age and has a lot of structure and background. The smokiness it sometimes has is dissipated. Only fruit is present with only a hint of oak and butter.

I am not a connoisseur of Chardonnay or whites, but this was not "rich" like others note here. More bright fruity springy, or cat-pissy", one might say... not buttery. Good luck.

Creamy and delicious. Lemon curd and a richness that is right on to balance the acidity. This is in a great place. With air, notes of butterscotch and vanilla emerge. Beautifully balanced, even with the oak influence being less subtle after it got the air.

I am enjoying Liquid Farm Chardonnay a lot. First had it at a restaurant in NOLA a couple of months ago and it wowed me then. Have been able to score it closer to home now and the marine salt and minerality of the flavors raises this to a very Burgundian character. We drank with chilled lobster and shrimp and with part of our main course of beef tenderloin and it effortlessly paired with all the flavors. Drank really well side-by-side with a 2010 Booker Oublie, so it has some backbone for sure.

First bottle in over 2 years. Acid has mellowed a bit and is in balance. Very good and harmonious central coast chard. Hopeful that the more recent vintages will end up in a similar place.

Really coming around. A bit of time in the cellar has mellowed this a touch so that razor sharp acidity is a bit rounded off. Refreshing marine notes, limestone.

So we wife tried this blind... couldn't put her finger on the varietal and locale (granted we typically drink oaky/buttery Cali chardonnay and other assorted white varietals), but she loved it - "unique but delicious". This started at 47F and opened up / evolved over 2 hours of drinking/warming -- much more so than most chardonnays. Stone fruit, tropical fruit, mineral, acidity, neutral/subtle oak -- leading to a lush long finish. This paired amazingly well with shrimp & zucchini in a saffron tomato cream sauce -- a tough pairing. This is not our typical style of Cali chardonnay but I get the hype... glad I have another bottle.

This gets your attention, much much better than the tight bottles I had some 2 years ago. At first blush a little ripe and rich but that doesn't last long at all. This has some pineapple and guava up front that quickly gives way to a very attractive funkiness, want to say reductive but it isn't that, somewhere between reductive and cheesy, and then some impressive floral character. The finish shines here, it goes on and on and it seems like the acid builds forever leaving you suddenly reaching for another sip but only seconds after thinking it was going to be a bit heavy! It's confusing. So while you start with this med-full bodied semi ripe deal, what you get is real length and real character. Super quality chard, needs just a bit more layering.

Drank over two nights. Note from night two. Medium-to-full nose has match stick, orchard fruit, light citrus zest, and rain water. Medium bodied on the palate with round, polished white fruit. Puckering zesty acidity immediately makes itself known and nicely counteracts the fruit. Fresh and lively. This has plenty of energy and tanginess with good depth of fruit and flavor.

This wine was crisp and complex. I tasted hints of apple, mineral and it had a long finish that ended with a buttery explosion. However, there really was no buttery taste up front, very complex.

I fell hard for the 2011 WH and until now felt that the 2012 didn't measure up...was too rich and lacked the precision. But this bottle of the 12 was great. I only tasted this on day 2 after opening, but the baby fat was gone and it took me back to the LF of yore. Nice

Popped and poured, light yellow/gold. Nose of lemon curd, stone fruits and light florals is tinged by a hint of petrol and reductive funk. Moderate-light body with moderate acidity. On the palate, this pleasant Chardonnay shows flavors of citrus, apples and a subtle impression of minerals. Although there isn't much complexity of flavor or structure, there's great transparency and the easygoing nature makes it quite charming. Ready to go now and over the next 1-2 years.
Quick comment: After tasting a bottle of 2011 White Hill a few weeks ago it's pretty noticeable how much less distinctive the 2012 is in most every aspect.
The Liquid Farm White Hill has evolved since since release. I'm not sure if better or worse, but it's still just as intriguing, which is part of what makes wine fun. It has less of the bracing acidity and crisp minerality in its youth and has developed a little bit more lushness with some subtle oak peeking through, akin to warm butter on a baguette. Still a delicious pairing with lunch under the SoCal heat wave.

Flowers, honey crisp apple, rich with good acid balance. There's some oak expressed here with a touch of vanilla cream but it's deft and in the background well integrated. Nice.

good/very good. certainly well priced. the 2011 version of the same wine was downright exciting, and this fell just short.
upon opening, needed to give this 30 minutes for sulphur to dissipate. actually better on night 2. lots of fruit and sunshine, balanced acidity, tart and tropical. medium weight - not light or "restrained" by any measure, but in balance. no butter/oak/malo, and not overly layered or heavy - just hits a good spot in the middle.
i think this probably will be better in 1-2 years.

A dud. The great thing about this was that it tasted like a young and well produced and balanced entry level chablis from a very good producer, i.e. green, tight, fresh and exhibiting no complexity. In a tunnel? I will try to save the remaining bottle for some years (it has balance and structure and will survive, is my guess)

Brought to a dinner; no formal notes. Lemon, hints of lime, almond, lychee, wet stones and just a bit of oak. FWIW Spouse does not like oak in Chardonnay and couldn't believe it had any oak treatment.

Seems a little more muted than the last bottle. Oak is sticking out more, got better as it warmed from cellar temp to room temp. Nose of citrus, flint, green apple, and oak. On the palate, oak front and center followed by citrus, toffee, and green apple. Long finish. Probably in an awkward phase for the moment. Check back in a few months from now.

Lemon, almond and a touch of lime on the nose. Definitely not sharp, definitely not creamy, superbalanced. Crushed stones, not so much about the fruit as the minerality. Lemon with a kiss of lime on the palate, creamy acidity. Very fresh and again, very mineral. No sharp edges here whatsoever, balance is the key word, and quality. Very good.

C enjoyed, but I didn't love this as much as I thought I would based on the notes. Something in middle... heavy, a bit of creaminess? too Chardonnay-ey :) ?... that I wasn't digging, and both thought the alcohol was peaking through a bit too much. Nice notes of pear, lemon and lime. Mouth watering finish was the best part. Better than SO many Chards out there and would certainly drink again but not sure we'll actively seek out.

My second bottle of this. While I was a bit underwhelmed this the first, this one is a different story. I'm not sure if it is bottle variation, palate variation, for that six months of age that made a difference but this one is rocking on all cylinders. Nothing to complain about here.

Book Club - HB (Red Table - Huntington Beach, CA): Blind. I guess Cali chardonnay and Liquid Farm White Hill. I was fairly certain it was WH but could have been the '11 Golden Slope as it seems the '12 vintage shows more oak influence. Good acid and pear / lychee nut flavor. Medium level of oak.

February '15 Bookclub--Hosted by SPK (wines tasted blind) (Red Table--Huntington Beach, CA): Tasted blind. I found this to be more on the simpler side last night, lacking some energy that I wanted. The oak seemed to be more dominant that I prefer in Chard, and the acidity while there, paired with some minerality, they both seemed in lower doses, too. I have had this wine now on a couple of occasions and I simply like the stunning '11 better, which for me was what really turned me onto LF.

Pnp with shrimp pasta. Perfect food wine. Pear, caramel, touch of oak and salinity on nose. Palate shows apple, hint of oak, vibrant acidity and dose of minerality. Nice balance. Oak much more apparent in last glass along with some creaminess/buttery CA character. Solid juice.

strong initial whiff of reduction on opening had me worried it was corked or oxidized, but it blew off within about 20 minutes - lovely pale yellow gold in color, at first seemed almost sweet but with another hour of air and coming to room temperature the flavors balanced well. Food friendly.

Quite good, although not surprisingly doesn't live up to the Internet board hype this producer gets. Peaches and orange and lime, touch of oak that works well, good chalkiness, plenty of acid, but lacks the midpalate depth to really get to the next level.
Another astonishingly good example from Liquid Farm. Previously have had the Golden Slope (and think I still marginally prefer it), which I thought was the best California Chard I'd ever tasted. This is crisper, leaner, more green apple. Chablis in style, as previous tasters have noted. Just delicious.

Enjoyed with a grilled Rosemary sea bass with red onion, fresh garden tomatoes, olives, mixed rice, and a goat cheese and artichoke salad. Paired beautifully. Great acidity due to the stainless steel and neutral oak aging, once opened up hints of oak but mostly white flowers and citrus, with a seamless finish.

Very good Cali chard, to be sure. Very muted compared to the Golden Slope. Light oaky notes, lemon and touch of lemon curd, a bit of pear. A slight buttery note but not heavy. Moderate acid, medium finish.

I don't get it. The good news is that it appears that many are getting a great deal of pleasure from this wine, which is great. The bad news is after a couple of bottles I still haven't. Distinct acid, faint lemon/citrus, heavy saline element. Just not pleasurable for me, but to each his own.

Women in Wine - Mike G and Nola visit Cleveland; 9/27/2014-9/29/2014 (A Restaurant on Lee Road): My first time getting a chance to try this producer. I liked it. Yellow gold in color. The nose has some peach and a bit of citrus with just the slightest hint of oak. I am pretty sure I remember it gets no new oak, but this surprised me. On the palate, this has peaches, some apples and again, the slightest hint of smoke. It is food friendly and clearly of California albeit better than most. I hope to try a bottle of this again at some point in a better tasting environment.

Muted nose. Some alcohol and a little acid on the finish. Smooth mouthfeel. I only had small glass of this, but it wasn't as good as other bottles I've had. Could be an off tasting night. Will see next time.

Chilled for 30 minutes, then opened and poured. Shows gorgeous notes of lemon curd, wet rock, sea breeze, and ripe green apples. Seamless acidity on the palate, where the aromas carry through perfectly. Key lime flavors rise up and work well with some green pear and a touch of iodine or briney flavor. I love the balance and structure, partly from the subtle oak and partly from the minerality. Good concentration and depth of flavor, good length. Pairs extremely well with food. One of the best California chardonnays I've had in a long time.

Burgundian style nose. High acidity for chardonnay. Great with food. Medium complexity, give it a year or two if possible. Very light on the oak and not overly rich. A good balance of new and old world. Very good.

Notes of pear and white pepper. There's lemon and pear and a buttery note. The wine has a nice balance of deep fruit, rich and viscous palate presence, and a wiry acidity. Very clean. Burgundian in some ways. Young. Could stand some time. Very, very nice.

Wow, acid, acid, acid! I've had several bottles of LF including this specific wine (14 times!) over the past few years, but today, this has more bracing acidity than I can remember. Smooth mouthfeel, lingering finish. I think I like the 2011 a tad better. This is definitely a food wine. I have several more bottles, so will look forward to following over the next few years. VERY GOOD.

My second bottle and I still don't get the hype. Initially closed and austere. Got better as it warmed up from the cellar. Aromas of apples, pears, lemons, herbs and minerals/oyster shells. Seemed light on the fruit and very acidic on the palate. Not a lot of complexity and tart on the finish. My wife's answer - you don't need to buy any more of these. For those who love this wine, there will be more for you.

Drank alongside the 2012 Four, which tonight I preferred that wine. For this White Hill, I found some fennel/anise on the aromatic, with yellow apple, an herb note and pear. Good push of acidity from lemon/lime and balance but it didn't thrill me like other past White Hill, and it lacked some depth that The Four showed tonight, coming off a little more glossy than I would expect.

The hype from WB led me to expect something this wine didn't deliver. Lots of acid, some fruit hiding back there, but not a ton of complexity. Its a good to very good wine, but I'm not gaga over it. I need to try the other two bottlings to get a better sense of the producer.

This was really good. Big, intense, but crisp and not your usual CA oak bomb. I saw butterscotch being tossed out in another review, and this strikes me as not a bad description. there was a slightly jarring element in there, where the wine didn't seem in complete harmony. Not sure what it was, but it could be alcohol.

This was our first Liquid Farm and I've been looking forward to trying one. I poured a couple glasses and handed one to Ann, blind. I have to say I smiled when she took a whiff and said, "smells minerally, salty - like Chablis." Just what I had heard and why I bought it. The wine is taut, with lemon/lime, tart green apple, good acidity, saline and mineral. There is a hint of light toffee or butterscotch on the finish but it is light and not obtrusive. I wouldn't say this is lean as there is a little weight, yet it is crisp and thirst quenching. Reminds me a little of the Yuen bottling from Wind Gap. I'm so glad there seems to be some momentum with this style of Chardonnay coming out of CA. Really good.

Light yellow color with a clear rim. Terrific nose of pears, lemon, and minerals. The palate was a terrific blend of lemon, pear, minerals, and a leesy note. Structurally, this medium-bodied wine has racy acidity that makes it nervy. The finish is long and tart with great fruit. Overall, this was a wonderfully vibrant wine that was made to be paired with food. It was excellent with ricotta gundi asparagus, peas, and mint. The wine brought out the mint and meshed beautifully with the acidity from the lemon zest.

Liquid Farm 4/4 Blind Chardonnay Shootout, Charleston (LWS): Liquid Farm 4/4 Blind Chardonnay Shootout. Many at the tasting predictably pegged this for Chablis. For me the minerality and acidity is there but there is still a ripeness and hint of sweetness which leads me to California. Maybe the lemon on the palate leans toward Meyer. This is a delicious wine that screams for food.

Just great. Immaculate balance, no rough edges. Just as good if not better than the '10 that I really enjoyed. Perhaps less oak than that one. Aside from the Ramey SVD and Liquid Farm, there aren't any auto-buy domestic chardonnays for me.
Dinner at Trelio (Clovis Ca.): Very clean and fresh…pure white orchard fruit, raw peanut, rain water, white flowers….alive with citrus acidity, some minerals. Tasty…but would rather drink Chablis.

Don’t think I’d mistake this for Chablis (the inspiration for this wine), but that’s not a bad thing at all. Really enjoyed the round lemon-lime driven profile with some stone fruit and a slight hint of the sweet brown spice I’ve begun to notice consistently in LF’s chards. Guessing this needs a bit more time to shed the baby fat that comes with the ‘12’s, so looking forward to trying again in the future.

Light straw color. Nose is pear and a pleasing fresh warm bread smell along with a little flint. Acidity takes center stage immediately on the tip of the tongue and carries through the finish. It has that sharp laser focus like a nice Chablis. Easy bottle to like at the price. Interested to see how the half saved for day two performs.
This is a different wine on day 2. The acidity is no longer center stage. Fruit has come forward with Asian pear and white peach. The acidity sets off the back sides of the tongue and finish is mouth watering.
I like the nose more on day one but the palate on day two. Very interesting. All for a good price.

Vivid and exciting Chardonnay that I heard about thanks to the find folks on the CT Forum! Nicely acidic body with minerally lemon rind and orange notes. Despite the lively nature, it's still generous in the mouth with citrus, slate and yellow plum skin. Paired very well with seafood risotto. Could age, I think.

At first I thought this was very good, but it was opened in a group of decent burgundy's and it was outmatched. Then for whatever reason the nose turned to Gerber baby food, couldn't shake it the rest of the night. Will open another in a few months to see if it was an off bottle.

Liquid Farm Tasting (Chris and Brig's House): Light yellow color. Aromas of very clean pear and red apple. Medium level if acidity with a good cut. Again, the fruit flavors are very clean. Medium plus finishing with a crisp snap. Slightly more fruit forward than the '11 but still maintains the angular attribute. Very nice.

Having really fell for the 2011 recently, I was wondering what the 2012 would show. What I learned last night during the visit from Niki and Jeff Nelson of Liquid Farm, is that this cuvee is done with all neutral wood and aged a portion in stainless. Probably explains why I recently went nuts for the 2011, combining the positive impact of the vintage with a vinification approach I appreciate. So what about this 2012? Lots of lime, good depth and chablis-like in the slate tones of the core of the wine. Tangerine zest and a spearmint quality, the latter shading the fruit that in tone seems a bit bigger than the 2011.

Still a delicious pairing with lunch under the SoCal heat wave.

upon opening, needed to give this 30 minutes for sulphur to dissipate. actually better on night 2. lots of fruit and sunshine, balanced acidity, tart and tropical. medium weight - not light or "restrained" by any measure, but in balance. no butter/oak/malo, and not overly layered or heavy - just hits a good spot in the middle.
i think this probably will be better in 1-2 years.

A dud. The great thing about this was that it tasted like a young and well produced and balanced entry level chablis from a very good producer, i.e. green, tight, fresh and exhibiting no complexity. In a tunnel? I will try to save the remaining bottle for some years (it has balance and structure and will survive, is my guess)

One of the better Chardonnays that I have had. Need to get more of this one.

Brilliant, firm but open, almost nutty, it's steely but it's deep and compels another sip. There working some old-school magic here.

Nice balance, but overpriced for what it is - you find better from Burgundy.

Excellent Chardonnay that really has hit it's stride with a perfect balance of acidity, quality fruit and citrus core. Really lovely and very much drinking beautifully now. It has all the elements you would want in an outstanding Chardonnay. Best vintage of White Hill yet.

Similar to 2011. All fruit, no oak, finish that lingers over a minute. Outstanding - will be interesting to follow this wine over the next several years. EXCELLENT.

My winery of the year in 2013. Great Chardonnay and they make a helluva Rose. The White Hill 2012 is my favorite vintage of this wine to date. Has evolved to an incredible drinking experience. Minerals, orchard fruit with subtle citrus notes. Beautiful!!!

This one just keeps getting more of my attention every time I taste it. Beautiful acidity and purity of fruit dominate with lovely foundation of minerality and backbone. A bit more rounded than prior vintage and seemingly getting more and more accessible. Lovely effort.

How do they do it :) The wines keep getting better. An amazing balance between bright citrus minerality and ripe stone and tropical fruit notes.

Paired with oyster dishes in restaurant. My first LF, and I was very pleased. I get pear notes and citrus on the palate, but the wine's calling card is minerality and acidity. Lovely bottle.

I can certainly understand the love for this. Great nose of flint, green apple, pear, sea air, and tangerine. On the palate, rich yet racy with green apple, pear, mineral, saline. Taut lean long finish. Very well done.

My first experience with LF. Light gold color. Beautiful nose of citrus and saline that translates to the palate with excellent acidity. There's a zing present that seems more than just the citrus and acid...and I like it. Nice medium finish. I bet this will get better over the next year but is great right now.

At first I thought this was very good, but it was opened in a group of decent burgundy's and it was outmatched. Then for whatever reason the nose turned to Gerber baby food, couldn't shake it the rest of the night. Will open another in a few months to see if it was an off bottle.

Wonderful effort from Liquid Farm. Mineral, citrus and bright acidity. Very balanced and great integration. This one keeps on giving and giving. I truly think this vintage of White Hill is the best to date.

A Privileged Colgin Tasting (One Market, San Francisco): My first taste of the 2012, and I was very impressed: great minerality complementing the restrained, crisp citrus and other fruit aspects. Really well balanced.

On the nose clean citrus, ocean mist, some faint banana. Lemon rind and some more of the faint banana on the palate with a lot of minerality. Bigger wine than the 2011. Medium+ acidity, long finish. Gets better as it warms.
edit..Just had my second bottle and it was very different from how I remember the first bottle. Definitely bigger than last years vintage. A ton of complexity. I like the subtle oak on this. Was a huge hit at dinner. I'm bumping up my rating by a point.

Started off a bit big, showing like CA chard, but settled in with good minerality. I would have liked a bit more acidity, but I was in the minority on that
