decanted 1 hour and 15 minutes after opening. Apparently fragrant some 1 hour after decanting, but by the time I tasted 2 hours after decanting this was not showing at all. A little better after 3½ hours in the decanter. Still got the tannins, with smoky, grilled meats, and some mint on the nose. Pretty disappointing.

Red fruit, pure, still fresh on the fruit and decent acidity, reduced, roasted/burnt meat and pepper still, verging on burning rubber. Oak still not fully integrated. Each element is clear and pure, but hasn’t developed to the point of harmonizing. Well done but misses greatness

Served blind, and I took it for a top-Bordeaux of a certain age A dark wine with chocolate and tobacco, very vertical, almost majestic, still some tannins left, but drinking a point IMHO. Still a great concentration and certainly no harm in aging it further, if one prefers. From HSA #FogheadsInTheGarden

Decanted for a good hour. Not much evolution. 5 years since we tried this last ( Papies 92) and although it definitely shows a more elegant feel but far away from what we expected from this wine. Lacked the smoky soft spicy character and generally lacked an exciting side to the level of a La Mouline. Was very good but just not La Mouline good. 92

Deep ruby. Black cherry, herbs and oak spice are the main elements of this complex nose. Rich, velvety texture. Mature feel. Glorious and bold. The oak is present but an accompaniment not a cover. Not the best La La but a great wine. No harm in drinking now but will last. (95)

Acker Auction - May 2019 (Zuma in NYC): Still quite young and drinking as such. There's a hint of the oak here that is impacting my impression of the wine. It's also got a touch more alcohol than I'd like to see. I think though it's more needs some time to pull together. If you believe the 20 year theory of LaLa's (that each LaLa needs at least 20 years) and I do, than this one still has at least one more to go. There is a certain softness and 'prettiness' to the wines. I had started as a La Turque fan but I'll say the softness in the La Mouline can be quite compelling.

My WOTD at Acker's November NYC auction. Hugely aromatic straight out of the bottle. Peppery, meaty, and floral. Very concentrated palate but without the sometimes cloying quality of riper vintages. Acidity keeps wine quite fresh. At a beautiful spot for drinking now. Much more developed than the 2001.

Hommage a DryCab - Washington Wines release; 5/3/2018-5/5/2018 (Various spots in Walla Walla): My favorite of the three (drank alongside its brothers the 2000 La Turque and La Landonne) although also the one that was most open for business at the beginning and had the least evolution in the glass. There's an elegance to this wine that comes through with the acid and the floral and the way that the meat and brine and fruit and flowers all work together. Really enjoyable. I think still going strong although was in a good drinking spot as well.

Four Decades of LaLa, plus a "sneaky" Saxum (Chez Kenny): Tasted blind among 13 wines, 11 of which were LaLas. Deep concentrated ruby. Lifted but brooding and massive aromatics of black fruits, smoke, herbs and spice. The palate is medium to full bodied with a powerful yet lifted presence. Smooth black fruit is made complex by black pepper, spice and smoked meat. Fresh, long and silky in the mouth. As good as the 00 La Landonne tasted right next to this. My #3 (but in a virtual tie with my #2), Group #2.

Tasted next to 2000 La Landonne and La Turque. Again the most fruit driven on the nose - very ripe, almost voluptuous. Smoky, meaty, peppery. Again rich and a little sweet on the palate. Firm but round tannins, good acidity and great overall balance. Very long but on a relative basis less complex and elegant compared to the other 2000s. The most evolved and ready. 92-94

Guigal La Las Masterclass with Brett Crittenden (Handford Wines, London): Much like last time 3 year sago (Papies 91) was a bit disappointing as it showed really ripe and at times lactic. Fruit focused, a touch raisin too ,light honey and we wonder if the viognier added to this side. Both of us discussed that we would not have guessed this was a syrah in a blind tasting. The good news is that the acidity is there which would allow for ageing and hopefully some evolution but feels like this needs another 10yrs to be worthy of the name.

Decanted for several hours. Needed the time. Very rich nose of cassis, smoke, bacon and some barnyard. Gorgeously balanced on the palate, with sweet fruit and lovely structure and acidity. More complexity with a couple of years will merit an even higher score.

Dégustation GEEU chez nous (Mouline, Redigaffi, Rousseau...) (Bernex): Bouteille et bouchon en parfaite condition. Into neck. Couleur violine, impressionnante.

Appearance: Bright and clear, it has medium ruby color, with fading rims and legs. Nose: Clean, with pronounced intensity aromas of floral notes of violet, black fruit such as dark cherries and blackberry, herbal notes of Chinese medicine, maturity notes of tobacco, kernel notes of coffee, animal notes of meaty and leather, oak notes of toast, sweet spice of nutmeg. The wine is developing. Palate: Dry with medium acidity, the wine has medium tannin of smooth and integrated texture, medium in alcohol and medium (+) body, showing medium (+) intensity flavors of black fruit such as dark cherries and blackberry, herbal notes of Chinese medicine, animal notes of meaty, maturity notes of leather, kernel notes of coffee. The wine has a medium (+) finish. Conclusion: Very good quality Cote-Rotie with a highly concentrated nose showing a good range of different aromas, from the fruit, leathery characters to the developed tobacco notes, demonstrating the capability of how well this Northern Rhone commune can be. On the palate it is well balanced, with a robust structure and good intensity, also exhibiting a fairly long finish. Overall a really wonderful wine to enjoy, ready to drink now and can further develop for another 2-3 years and can keep even longer.

Decanted for two hours. Deep garnet with nose of licorice and cassis. Similar in mouth feel to the Cheval Des Andes, sweet, bit of leather and there is longer finish. Slightly more grippy tannin here. The best southern France I ahd is 1989 La Pavillion.

double-decanted, slow-ox one hour, served blind & followed over 3 hours before the reveal. (served w/'99 la Mouline, '99 & '00 La Turque)
dark red to garnet; initially, the most open & impressive bouquet of the group, showing vanilla, floral sachet, black fruits & cassis, some high-toned herbal characteristics became more prominent w/air; med+ weight, very suave on mouthfeel; ripe blackberry, blackcurrant, smokey espresso notes, supple yet solid tannins suggest more time til optimal drinking, although this was the most "ready" of the four.
My last bottle of this and somewhat less impressive than the last one. The bouquet was a rich and gamey mix of black fruit, charred meats and dried herbs. But on the palate, the follow through was less robust than I expected. I wouldn't go so far as to call it light or skinny but there was a slight mismatch between the strength of the bouquet and the altogether more modest mid palate and slightly thin finish. If trying to pick up off-vintage La Mouline bargains, I'd say go for the 2002 rather than the 2000

Wow! Lovely sweet nose of double-creme de cassis lavender, bacon fat, ripe blackberries, garrigue. Rich mouthfeel, coats the palate, very flavorful. I would say cassis sorbet. Soft tannins, very long finish. An awesome wine! I know that there are no great wines, just great bottles. But this is a truly sensational bottle.

IPNC Lunches and Dinners; 7/26/2013-7/27/2013 (McMinnville OR): Tasting, brief note. Forward black fruit with espresso and cocoa hints with enticing spice. The forward and ripe fruit masks firm tannins and structure that are still taking their own time to soften. Very nice now, but this will still get better as the harmony increases.

Dark and brooding when poured, this wine eventually opened up to reveal deep smoky nose of dark berries, leather, roast meats and preserved plum. Heavy bodied on the palate with strong hints of toasty oak, the alcohol gave a sweet tinge to what was otherwise a savoury, tannic wine that clearly needs more time in the cellar. Very enjoyable though!

This will be one tasting note for La Mouline, La Landonne and La Turque 2000. About the color I only wrote down that the Mouline is the most light in color with a slightly carmine rim. The Mouline has a great and deep bouquet with vanilla, garrigue, autumn impressions, but also sour cherries. The Turque had the same bouquet which was a little more intense and added black olives and more good and clean fruits. The Landonne showed beside the other descriptions, the most rustic impressions and had overall the most complexity in the nose. On the palate the Mouline was the most open for business at the moment. Beautiful garrigue, vanilla, acidity and bitterness in the finish. The Turque was the most robust wine with also garrigue, vanilla, good red berry fruit, animal, leather and still firm tannin. The Landonne had the same tastes and was the most juicy one with a bit grainy tannin and had the greatest length. Overall, at this moment, the Mouline is the most approachable and scores for that reason highest with 96. Second place for La Turque with 96 as well. It is the most complex and robust of the three…..and I had the opportunity to taste the wine again after it was open for one day: It had developed so much for the better!! This will be stunning in 2018 or even later. The least refined, but of course also a beautiful wine was La Landonne, which I scored 95. What a great opportunity to taste these wines beside each other!

A touch dissapointing at this stage. Decanted but never evolved and never shed this oak on the nose. Vanilla, lactic notes dominate the nose. On he palate it is better but still lacks the elegance of mouline and the oak aroma spoils the fun. Solid fruit presence on the palate but hopefully time will help bring that to the forefront. 90-91 at the moment from us.

2012 - Last Simple one in 2012 (Jade Palace Seafood Restaurant, The Forum Shopping Mall, Orchard Road): Alcohol :: 13% Bright dark ruby with brown rim. Tobacco, bacon fat, savory plum, sweet cherry, leather, sweet spices and loaded with sweet dark fruits. The complexity on the nose is unreal! On the palate this is by far the tightest with highest level of fine grained tannin as well as absolutely lively acidity, sweet dark fruits, spices and leather . However, the class can't b cover by the solid tannic structure. Very long, sweet finished with dark fruits, sweet slices lingering.

Deep ruby colour. Exquisite nose of violets, tobacco, ink, blueberry and blackcurrant fruit, leather and what have you! Suave texture with high quality tannins medium to high acidity and flavours of berry fruit in the mouth together with violet and minerals. Vanilla oak still evident and delectable. Finish is long but slightly bitter. Alcohol at 13% is barely noticeable. Wine is drinking beautifully now but is still young. Really grand wine with such finesse and mouth-caressing feel that is rarely encountered. Here one has to explain not why he gives the points he does, but instead why he deducts from 100. It only has to do with fine tuning..

Nose of blue fruits, smoke, wild game with some bacon fat. More of the same on the palate with the purest, dark blueberries and more smoked meats and bacon. Very creamy mouthfeel with all around balance in terms of acid, tannins, oak and alcohol. Crazy long finish. This was my first la la and a real eye opener as to what "perfectly made" wine can be like.

Tasting with TheDumbPhase: "I have never made a secret of the fact that if I had only one wine left to drink, I would want it to be one of the great vintages of Guigal's Cote Rotie La Mouline." - Robert M. Parker, Jr. We decanted the La Mou for ~2.5 hrs before drinking. As soon as the wine was in the decanter, everyone started sneaking sniffs - coffee liqueur, polvoron, smoky bacon fat, HUGE tiramisu. By the time it came to drink it, I for one was on the edge of my seat.
And when I smelled it, I melted and actually banged my head on the back of my chair. Medium ruby in the glass, the La Mou had a bouquet of liquorice, nuts, cherry, tobacco, bacon fat... the flavors came in washes. I was a bit disappointed that the tiramisu I'd loved so much in the decanter wasn't more prominent in the glass, but still, the wine had a 97-point bouquet. In the mouth it was med/med- bodied, the epitome of elegance, savory, well-integrated oak tones, phenomenal balance, just effortlessly graceful, myriads of flavors that changed with each taste. It doesn't punch you in the face, and the palate is transition-less. Not bold or super-intense, but damn good. Hard to articulate why, but the emotional response was instant and visceral.
It was every so slightly disappointing. I was hoping for a bit more on the palate, maybe more tiramisu and fruit on the nose, but still, it was one of the best wines I've ever tasted. If we hadn't decanted it and tasted it in the proper place amongst the lineup, I don't know if it would have shown as well. This was one case where the wine clearly rewarded some respect and close scrutiny. 91-94. (~$300 retail)

2000 Guigal LaLa Flight (Columbus, OH): Great aromatics - sweet red fruits, earth, and spcie notes. Young, feminine palate with a hard, sharp acidity and fine tannins. Tightens up some with time, to a more Rioja-like tart cherry profile. Very nice.

Winos Event @ Glenview: 2000 Guigal La Mouline (contributor RS)--Popped, decanted and poured. Needed time. Very rich nose, but as yet underdeveloped. The wine has great ingredients and pedigree, and will be an unbelievably good experience in another 5 years. Beautiful. 95 points

Impressive nose of dark fruit, coffee, some spice and vanilla. Round, full and rich on the palate. Love the coffee notes and plush texture. This will improve, but is great right now. Long finish with nice grip.

50 + Kleur: 5 + Aroma / bouquet: 14 + Smaak / Afdronk: 19 + Algemeen / potentieel: 9 = 97/100
Color: Ruby Aroma / Bouquet: Modern, 'polished' wine with aromas of cherry, berry, candy (Haagse Hopjes) custard, caramel. Taste / Finish: Powerful acids and powerful (but nicely ripened) tannins, full, but with a wonderful balance. Notes of chocolate and pepper. General / potential: Accessible and almost 'new-world-like' power wine. 50 + Colour: 5 + Aroma / Bouquet: 14 + Taste / Finish: 19 + General / potential: 9 = 97/100

2012 - Last Simple one in 2012 (Jade Palace Seafood Restaurant, The Forum Shopping Mall, Orchard Road): Alcohol :: 13%
Bright dark ruby with brown rim.

Medium dark red; very expressive blackcurrant and cherry nose, sweet caramel; intense and elegant, deeper and more profound than 2002 also tasted, however not that much of a difference; very nice and elegant but also a bit to the lean side
