  • A year later, and this remains a bit chewy, with tannins that are mouth-coating. Still, the fruit is becoming darker and more subdued and overall this was great.

  • Beautiful wine. One of the best I’ve ever had. Prototypical Paulliac with incredible aromatics and a lingering finish. Might not be the most recognised vintage, but this producer continues to consistently deliver. Cork was popped 5 hours prior.

    Colour: deep ruby.
    Acidity: high.
    Texture: medium+.
    Tannins: high.
    Finish: persistently long.

Aromas: pencil shavings/graphite, earthy, cherry, purple flowers, raspberry, and vanilla.

  • Blind.

Was absolutely unreal tonight. Classic style, full out pencil box and red currant. I am blown away how well the 14s are drinking.

I see the scores and know this vintage isn't bragged about. It should be

  • Typical depth of dark fruit and earth, and so well balanced. A great wine, although there are vintages that may be greater.

  • Dinner at Maple & Ash. Decanted for half an hour before drinking. Needed longer as it continues to get better throughout dinner. Excellent nose with cassis and black fruit. Good mouthfeel with less structure and tannin than I expected. Fruit is fading but still primary. Very enjoyable with dinner and did not overpower the steak. Needs a longer decant.

  • Opened at the end of the evening to compare to a bottle of 1995 Pontet-Canet a friend brought. The nose and pallet of both wines were almost identical with the 2014 being slightly brighter/fresher with more acidity. Given the high critic scores of the 14 I expected a great wine but this was average at best and I was underwhelmed. Of the 6 different red, two bottles each of 13 dunn Napa Valley 13 Palo Scavino bric del fiasc 16 torbreck Descendant and 08 circa cab franc, the two Pontet-Canet were my least favorite. Perhaps I'm just not a bordeaux guy or maybe my pallet isn't sophisticated enough (im sure the bordeaux lovers would say this- LOL) to appreciate them, but, at least for me, there are a lot of places making better wine then bordeaux. Would not buy again and not a particularly good qpr. Having said all that, I do think Bordeaux makes the best chardonnay in the world!

  • Drank at a business dinner in Montréal.

Decanted and drank over the course of two hours.

Dark cherry, wet dirt, slight spice.

Opened up nicely, probably can use more time.

    Paired well with gnocchi.

    93 points.

  • What a stunner! The nose hooks you immediately with inky black fruit and pencil shavings, the palate is bursting with black fruit, acidity, and surprisingly integrated tannins. Lots of drive and length. At 10 years old, this does not feel too young to drink nor from a “normal” vintage. Great value for the quality

  • D, Similar to the 2011, the 2014 has added aromatic steeliness, especially compared with the 2012. However, the 2014 displays lovely fruit purity of cassis, red and black berry on the palate, and I like the tension, even if 2012 wins on sumptuousness. Aged 50% new oak , 35% amphora.

  • 91. Blackberry and graphite on the nose. More black fruits on the palate, medium finish. Fairly straightforward, classic claret.

  • Had a bottle with one of my best friends at Reussbad Restaurant in Lucerne🇨🇭with great food, it was getting along perfectly with foie gras and entrecote „cafe de paris“
What a wine!! Perfectly ready to drink now
Dry, medium acidity, medium body, very elegant and complex, perfectly balanced between fruit and oak, nice aromas of black fruit and earthy elements in the nose and on the palate, great quality as expected, just a great wine!!

  • Bordeaux 2014, 10-years on tasted blind: The nose is ripe here with dark fruit and oak spices. Polished palate, again good ripeness and dark berries. Well made, but aromatically a bit foursquare, but it did very well with the crowd. Rank 2/15

  • Bordeaux 2014 - 10 Years On - 15 Reds: Fifteen red wines (14 left bank/1 right bank). All tasted blind. The 2014 vintage turned out to be good, but not exceptional. This vintage is characterized by a cool, classic style with an impressive expression of fresh fruit. The wines were rich in blue fruit, supported by a fine mineral backbone, without succumbing to overripeness or overbearing fruitiness. Contrary to expectations, the wines were not overly austere and showed good (excellent at the top) tannin structure, contributing to a classic Bordeaux experience. However, it's important to note that while these wines have commendable qualities, they lack the complexity and, to a lesser extent, the finesse and elegance characteristic of the most celebrated vintages. Many of the wines seemed a bit simplistic. I think they are likely to peak in the early rather than mature into 30, 40, 50-year wines as I don’t think there is enough fruit. My top three were a layered, blue-fruited Ducru Beaucaillou, a strawberry-laden, purity-driven Montrose (both rated 94pts), and an elegant Pichon Lalande (93pts), foreshadowing the great things this estate has produced in vintages since. The group winner was also the Ducru.

TN: This was a bit controversial around the table due to its style. While most wines shine with their structure and minerality, show that old-school Bordeaux style, this wine was very polished with lots of candied red berries. Clearly an odd-one out, I wouldn’t necessarily have guessed this to be a Bordeaux. I’m not a strict purist and different styles keep it interesting but this is not a wine I would chase.

Decanting: Not decanted, I would go for two hours.

  • Retasted another bottle. Still overwhelming with the tannins, despite 2h of carafe. Lovely black fruit flavours and tobacco but simply too tannic for now. Will def. Wait 5 years before next.

  • Decanted 1hour. Currant, roasted herbs, medium bodied with a long finish. Great upside.

  • **In 2014, PC definitely hits the target for PC and this one is another great value for the Bordeaux drinkers who like this style of wine and venture off of the beaten path. California drinkers will especially find big appeal in this...I think. Lots of tug and pull, not over the top, sweet, wanting to be serious, but cant wipe the smirk off the face. Faint graphite and good balance between all components (fruit, tannin, acid, alcohol, oak). Shy on the nose, delightful in the mouth, and ready to go without any signs of big improvement or falling apart. This is another 2014 wine from the left bank of Bordeaux that checks that perfect holiday wine box. Drink!

    * A good value for PC fans.

  • Very lively, such intense nose. It kindly flashed me. Med to full body, smooth tannins, nicely integrated acidity. So well balanced and intense, I loved it completely.

  • Quite alive and fleshy, with some classic Pauillac notes of anise and black fruit. Reminded me of Grand Puy Lacoste a bit. Still has some of the unformed almost strident aspect from the '14 vintage, but more appealing than most.

  • Great structure, not as giving right now. Not sure if it will get better or stay here. Very good though

  • This Bordeaux had hints of strawberry fruit similar to red burgundy and fine dry tannins a bit like a young barolo. Good flavor and noise. Perhaps I should have given the wine more air before I drank it.

  • Best bottle (Weindorf Kirchheim): Glass: Gabriel Standard
Popped and poured. Clear, deep ruby color. Very primary nose, lots of fruit, not very expressive though. On the palate of course young, high acidity, fine medium+ tannin, lots of deep fruit, herbs, good balance, medium+ finish. In a difficult stage right now, not in its fruit phase anymore and not yet enough tertiary complexity. I would wait 5+ years before I pop another bottle. 91+

  • Hard to put in words, but this is classic, refined, and rustic, all at the same time. I love it and it just entered its drinking window. Bottle aging will help, but there is no shame in popping the cork now if you have a few.

  • Seemed a bit muted. Maybe entering a closed stage. Not as bright and expressive as my last bottle from 18 months ago.

  • Very nice on the nose straight out of the bottle. Blueberry, a little cherry, slate, pyrazine and a big hit of violets on the palate. Medium length on the finish. Structure and dusty tannins remain prominent.

  • A week in Bordeaux (Mouton, Pontet Canet, D'Issan, Langoa & Leoville Barton, SHL, Arbo, Pavie, Fleur de Bouard, Cheval Blanc, VCC, Figeac); 5/21/2023-5/26/2023 (Left and Right banks of Bordeaux): Tasted @ the chateau from 375ml. PNP. Very soft tannins, elegant wine that is drinking very well today. May improve a bit over next couple years but this '14 is drinking great right now! Great QPR and will add some of this to my cellar. Lovely and unique biodynamic property well worth a visit! Brad - heavypourwine.com

  • Powerful body with grippy tannins. Lots of fruit at the forefront. Pyrazine, almost jalapeño or ripe bell pepper, brings nice complexity.

  • Tasted blind at a social event. Decanted 4-5 hours which was spot on. Ripe and dark fruit profile showing cherry and brambleberry notes. Just a tad of sweet spice, iron-like minerality, truffles and herbs. So far good marks for complexity with emerging tertiary aromas complementing the still dominantly primary profile. The palate is structured with tangible tannin, but proved lacking in harmony a bit.

  • Easter 2023. Wonderful, but came up short vs a 2015 Schrader RBS.

  • Solid Pontet Canet. The profile is very similar to other PC in the single blind line up but missing the complexity of the others. Although 1 person did put it as the top wine and one had it dead last.
Most others had it in the middle.

  • I decanted and strained my Pontet-Canet, and then I let it sit for three hours. There was only a bit of sediment in the bottle. The 2014 PC has entered its drinking window. It is a fairly smooth wine with little tannin. I drank it over a three day period and it was steady over the three days. While I'm not as impressed as the CT community is with this wine, I still thought that it was nice. I have another bottle and I plan to drink it in another year.

  • Half bottle. Decanted 1.5 hours. Sublime and great value relative to other PC vintages. Yes it will improve but it is drinking sublimely now. Worth stocking up.

  • Great potential: cassis, blackberry, cedar, tobacco, minerals. Very long finish. Still a little too strong tannins. Should wait a couple of years.

  • Deep red color, initially somewhat closed nose at first. Very little sediment. Out of the bottle tannin and fruit are evident with acid following behind. I enjoyed this wine much more than in previous notes - was it the 2.5 year of additional age? the 3h in the decanter? drinking with a lamb roast? I'm not sure. This was a classic Pauillac with a bit of funk, at least 60 seconds of finish, and still young. If you open a bottle be sure to give it a lot of air and perhaps drink with food to get the full effect.

  • Another wide open 2014, an absolute delight. Incredible purity of fruit, so ripe and yet all in balance. This will evolve but will it get better?
Long finish. Perfect pairing with duck.

I believe this was double decanted several hours before serving

  • Consumed over a couple days. Opens up with a beautiful nose of forest berry, concentrated cassis and distinct minerally forest floor. As with most young BDX the profile changed rather quickly with air, and the nose transitioned to graphite, lead and green forest notes. Palate is still quite taught with a distinct cassis and currant backbone followed by stringent evergreen forest and more gravelly touches. The precision was very good, just needs more time.

  • Walk around tasting, direct from producer. Garnet with some evolution on the rim. The nose is showing some tertiary development with forest floor and classic Pauillac graphite aromas, in addition to cassis. Really quite suave on the palate with integrated tannins, terrific length, and good acidity. Drinking beautifully right now after just an hour decant. No hurry to drink these but surprisingly approachable and well-balanced. Bravo!

  • Some gamey and dried fruits notes. A bit green and lean. Savoury minerals. Drying tannins. Not so balanced.

  • Crimson red with pencil shavings, cedar, and cassis on the nose. Medium to full bodied with velvety tannins coming across as quite full throttle and serious, with cassis, plums and some spices on the palate. Very good but so primary and perhaps enjoyment curtailed more than I had expected by its youth and sheer power. 13.5% ABV. From Zalto Bordeaux and decanted 1.5 hours ahead.

  • 2014 marks the first vintage the estate was Demeter certified. Everything here is classic in style starting with the nose and all of its tobacco leaf, cigar box, herbs, smoke, currants, and peppery spices. There is freshness, as well as sweetness to the berries. The fruits are clean, earthy, bright, and chewy, leaving you with a healthy wave of currants, blackberries, salty rocks, and a touch of creaminess in the finish. The wine blends 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot, 13.5% ABV. Drink from 2024-2045.

  • Perfect, barely soaked cork. Deep blackish red in colour like a ripe cherry. First impressions is black currant and pencil shavings on the nose. Then comes blackberry, suede and a touch of iodine. Very pure and fresh bouquet! Actually quite luscious! Full bodied, very ripe and highly extracted fruit and glycerine, very high tannins, very dry finish, highish alcohol. Lots of black and purple fruits on the palate, very big and full, chewy tannins. Flavours of black currant, blackberry, blue plum, graphite, cedar bark and crushed minerals. Huge tannic and grippy finish! This is a powerhouse of a wine that is unapologetically the new breed of Bordeaux from classic high quality terroir!!

  • This was quite solid. I struggled with many of the '14 vintage over the last few years, likely opening them too early, but this really sang and felt quite complete. Oodles of black fruit, some creme de cassis and some lovely dryness on the finish. Very classy, obviously from Pauillac. The sweetness of the fruit was a surprise as I've found many from the '14 vintage a bit awkward and closed. Wish I had more of this.

  • Decided to check up on these to see if they’re ready to start drinking. I don’t think they’re quite yet ready. The scents include cedar, graphite, a berry mix of sorts (more blueberry/blackberry) with a ton of damson plum. Flavour wise there’s lots of the same one gets from the scents- the berries, the graphite and the pluminess. It has a good amount of juiciness, about medium level of tannins and the finish isn’t much long. It’s still rather primary so I’m guessing another 3-5 years to go. I don’t see this coming close to the 15/16s, even less the 09/10s as far as longevity goes. Commendable, and drinkable wine for now. I can see it eventually becoming a 90pt wine, but I think that’ll be its peak.

  • James Suckling is smoking crack giving this a 98. I had several bottles, it’s average at best. 14 is not the best year in Bordeaux, but 14 Cos d Estournel and Leoville Las cases showed better. I had the 15, it was better. I like the style, the 14 just isn’t a great bottle it’s just okay.

  • Classic, no, quality, yes. This is not a textbook Pauiilac as some notes suggest, but a well thrown dart at the target of the rich and modern style by the new regime of Bordeaux. This is still somewhat juicy and the best part to me is the dryness and the grip that creates that sexy sensation of a serious and well made wine. Yes there are faint nuances of graphite and terroir, but the big fruit in these wines suffocate any gasps from the terroir's hope to share the stage. As to where classic Bordeaux goes through 3 stages of maturity and hold the last till death, I would say these modern wines go through 2 stages. The first stage is the juicy stage from release through year 7 to 10, and then as the fruit starts its fade, they need to sleep for 10 years to see if the fruit finally gives into sharing the light with the terroir...I have yet to see the second stage of any modern wines from the right or left bank perform well, but I know that the in-between (rebalancing stage) is awkward and lacks freshness, without the allure of age. Time will tell, Drink or a Long Hold

    * I would go further to say that if you are a PC fan, then the 2014 is a bargain, because its clearly on target for what you will get in most vintages, give or take a hair.

  • First bottle of six. Slow oxed for 4 hours prior to drinking. Very nice wine with lots of fruit and complex finish which bodes well for its future. I suspect this is more of a 10-15 year wine and it will be fun to follow it along.

  • A 2014 comes to battle with the 1990s Pontet Canets at our big vertical evening.. and it was by far the best, freshest and most enjoyable vintage.. 2014!
I could nearly see the darker tannins & loved the blackfruit notes too.

The use of horses by Alfred Tesseron to churn the soil more gently, and sustainable farming methods certainly make this an innovative Chateau and team - All this lends itself to the greatness of this 5th Growth, we are blessed to enjoy 9 different vintages of PC over the past year!

  • CH Pontet Canet 2014
Deep garnet ruby color. Nose of flora, violet, rose petals, fruity, full of youth and overtime emerged with intense riped fruit, sweet spice, roasted tomatoes with slight minty. Entry was elegance, rich character, refine tannins, well balanced structure with medium body mid palate. Finished is lengthy, lasted 50 secs and beyond. Transition from nose to finished is seemless. This wine is still at her youth, likely potential for further development. Suggest to revisit in 2-3 years time and enjoy over next 8-10 years. 93-95 pts

  • A balanced and refined nose for this relatively young Pauillac. Dense black fruits, toasted spices, seasoned leather, cedar and river gravel are skillfully presented in a calm and layered manner on the nose and on the palate. The length of this wine is amazing, there are tons of juicy fruits, fresh acidity and fine tannins underpinning the big but polished structure. So seamless in the transitions from a soft entry to a deep and powerful mid-palate to a lingering and refined finish. Still youthful but the phenolic components are already quite harmonised. It is approachable now with an hour of breathing. Keeping this for a few more years would be even better and you would be happily drinking this for the next 10-15 years. The quality equivalent of a second growth in Bordeaux. 94-95 pts.

  • This is typical Paulliac. 60% cab sauvignon, with merlot, cab franc and petit verdot. What I would call a voluptuous nose, with cassis and dark fruit. Full bodied, complex with black and blue fruit. Quite spicey as well. The tannins are very much present.

  • Judgment of Lafayette (West Lafayette, IN): Served blind. Nose of dark cherry syrup, black currants, and a touch of smoke. Medium-plus body, medium acid, and medium-to-medium-plus grippy tannins. Dark ripe fruits on the palate that were perhaps just a touch syrupy. While still certainly Bordeaux-like this had a richness that stood out from the others (and the Mayacamas the blended right in).

  • A little tight upon opening but didn’t take long to come together, about 2 hours in a decanter. Cherry, cassis, plum, pomegranate, violets, pencil shavings, clove, nutmeg, dried tobacco leaf, cigar box, medium acid and medium+ tannins. Great balance and length. Like most 2014s, it’s more of a classic vintage, not profound but very good and will be for the next decade or two.

  • Continues to age well. Was drinking well after a short two hour decant and continued to open up. Fresh, soft fruit whilst oaky and dry. Subtlety and substance.

  • Drank from decanter at Dana's wine dinner a few nites back. I've had this wine before and it's even more approachable than it was a few yrs ago. (I would still give this wine plenty of added bottle time). Great nose of tobacco, cedar, black fruit, forest floor. Medium to full-body, plenty of black fruit and cassis, still quite tannic but slowly softening. There's lots of tobacco, lead pencil and earthiness in this highly concentrated, sexy wine. It's powerful, but still elegant. The only complaint I had was the finish was a tad short. But, overall, a delicious wine! DECANT!

  • Out of the bottle, purplish-plum going to dark rose at the edge of the glass. Nose is very understated (I checked to see if bottle was too cold, it was not). On the tongue good tannic and acid balance with very subtle, almost invisible fruit, in contrast with previous note. After an hour of decanting the nose has opened up slightly, some violet and blueberry notes while the taste is quite pleasantly integrated with crisp acid, tannin and secondarily cherry-like fruit. With more time fruit notes predominate and the finish is pleasant but without complexity.

  • The color was deep purple

Nose: fresh blueberries, herbs de Provence, tilled earth, cassis, lavender essence

Palate: raspberry lemon coulis, pomegranate, cassis, rosemary, lavender, cigar box, clove and cracked pepper. As time went on the depth really started to emerge and the savory terroir became much more present. Medium body, medium plus acid, amazing length. Very fine tannin, so elegant.

Drank with skirt steak with chimichurri and French fries with truffle parmesan. Perfect pairing and a really beautiful Bordeaux

  • Second bottle from a case of this vintage. Prior one was drunk a year ago. Long decant and it opened up beautifully for dinner. For a Pauillac of only six years vintage it is very polished and elegant already. Plenty of structure there so will be wonderful for many more years to come.

  • If I had this blind I would be tempted to say it tastes like a cool vintage bedrock blend. It has power, acidity, pronounced purple fruits, and a warmth to it. Doesn't really strike me as Bordeaux, but it is still a nice drink.

  • Right out of the bottle the nose is one of bright fruit: cherries, apple. On the tongue darker fruits are evident as well as a generous helping of acid. After a couple of hours, the fruit has subsided leaving a pleasant blend of acid tannin and dark fruits; peppery on the tongue with a long finish redolent of tobacco.

  • This is really quite opulent for a '14 Bordeaux and for a Pauillac. Big and ripe with deep flavors of blackberries and dark earth with good acidity and intensity. Rather thickly-textured with firm and grippy tannins. Obviously needs time but if I tasted this blind, I would've said St. Emilion and not Pauillac which is not a good thing in my opinion. Perhaps the terroir will come out in time. 88?

  • I gotta be honest...this iteration of Pontet-Canet does what every other 2014 Bordeaux I’ve had does...underwhelms. It’s fine and all I guess with its smokey blackberry, black currant, cedar, and wet mulch notes, but the delivery is basically flat and the mid-palate is linear and fairly hollow. Finishes short, falling off the back end without a trace of notable grip or speed. Kinda flavorful, but kinda not.

It’s drinkable the same way a first date with someone who is not totally annoying is tolerable, but at the end of the night I would have preferred to just stay at home and watch some documentary on the History Channel and maybe have learned something before I went to bed. It’s one of those wines you wished you hadn’t wasted the calories on after having a couple of glasses. My girl literally started falling asleep while drinking it (which maybe says more about my company than the wine).

Hold I guess?! Not sure if I blame the vintage or what. Regardless, whatever is the culprit, if you have a chance to buy this wine...maybe instead you’d get more pleasure buying yourself a snazzy necktie or sumthin to spruce up your otherwise mundane white shirt and grey suit getup. 87-88 points?... with the understanding that this score is..........kind ....

  • Opened the bottle Coravined in April and June. Spectacular in all regards! The Pontet-Canet house style, which accentuates vintage characteristics better than any house not named Latour, along with its distinctive terroir, provide satisfying pleasure here. At once forward and restrained, time will serve it well. I should enter a middle drinking window by 2030-2032.

The more I drink 2014 Bordeaux, the more I find the vintage label 'uneven' puzzling. Instead, I prefer the term, 'ripe tradition', as the vintage offers expansiveness of fruit and depth of terroir, both which, in my experience, Pontet-Canet conveys best.

  • Tasted at Halpern Grand Cru; beautiful nose of violets and fruit; palate is elegant with good heft

  • -- decanted immediately before initial taste --
    -- tasted non-blind over a couple hours --

NOSE: smoky oak; black cherry Twizzlers; raspberry reduction; hints of cumin and bitter orange peel.

BODY: superfine particulate matter present; dark garnet-violet color of great depth; medium bodied.

TASTE: dark, red fruits; intense florals; hint of ballpoint pen ink; not thick/heavy; tight; alcohol not noticeable; lightly tannic; Ash gut impression score: 92. Although this is approachable now, it struck me as somewhat reserved. Best to Hold.

    My score: 50, 5, 13, 17, 8 = 93

  • Delicious blackberry with cedar and truffle earthiness. Still a little tight but after decanting it opened up really well. Was the first in a case so the rest still hold much promise for the years ahaed.

  • Out of the bottle this was almost undrinkable, so tart and green, but after breathing for 4 hours it started to sing. Blackberry, creme de cassis, cedar, vanilla and oregano. Good depth of fruit without being heavy, nice lift and very fine tannins. The oak is deftly balanced and the finish is smooth. Should age very elegantly.

  • We liked this one, 95s and 96s around the table. Classic Bordeaux blend, fruity and full of flavor.

  • Pontet-Canet '14 - '16 vertical.

The most forward and open-knit of the three. Strong Cabernet Sauvignon markers, notably pyrazines, blackcurrant, and graphite, deftly rounded by plush Merlot. Also featuring a somewhat delicate expression of Pauillac terroir. The wine sports medium plus acid and medium, velvety tannins. Certainly approachable now, and highly likely to improve. It should reach full stride by 2035+. Pontet-Canet captures the essence of the 2014 vintage. Bravo!

  • Decanted for an hour. Black cherry, wet earth, Indian spice, blackberry and cherry wood, with a hint of menthol. This is quite latent and not divulging much, yet shows so much depth and the need to reveal more over the years. Fine tannins and so much character, with an elaborate finish that embodies what this wonderful chateau can produce. The purity and form provide a fine version of tranquility. During the very long finish, there’s cherry and tobacco. Drink 2023 -.

  • A brief statement of bias:

After Château Latour, of which I have had the good fortune of tasting two vintages, Pontet-Canet is my favorite Left Bank Bordeaux. This preference results from many factors, but the mind-bending expression of terroir from vintage to vintage, even in sub par vintages, stands as primary. In my experience, the Tesserons let each vintage express itself, untrammeled by excessive extraction, manipulation, or oak treatment.

The 2014 vintage puts the mind to a leaner, lighter, and perhaps less exact 2010, all of which, in my experience, typify the 2014 vintage overall. This vintage, for example, shows more dark berry fruit than others, say the 2006 and 2008, and also a certain prettiness, yet it does not lack for elegance, and its masked power puts the mind to the proverbial iron fist in a velvet glove. Though moderately fruit forward, which makes it delicious now, patience will be rewarded, as it sports medium plus acid and medium to medium plus tannin. The wine should evolve over the next fifteen to twenty years and last through 2045, perhaps beyond. Noteworthy for its purity, and more specifically, as the definitive Left Bank offering of the vintage. 94-96.

  • Clear, deep burgundy colour with an orangey-white rim, sparse med-fast moving tears.
Clean, med. intensity, with aromas of plum tomatoes, red. cherries, and charcoal.
Dry, med+ tannins, med acidity, med- alcohol, med- body, not overwhelming. Further tastes of black cherries, salt, black olives, and a great finish. Amazing for a 2014.

  • Mid-Week Mostly Merlot Dominated Bordeaux Blends (just organically happened that way) (Casa Billiet): Tasted blind for Bordeaux blend tasting. First impression is this has a decent amount of cab franc, so I was surprised to find out it did not. Tight nose with notes of Blackberry, black cherry and a touch of graphite. Well-balanced in the mouth, with a decent amount of tannic structure in a smooth delivery. I was really surprised to find out this was a Pontet Canet since my experience is they need more time and this was fairly accessible. This should improve with time in the bottle. 92-93

  • Very refresing after having tried the more powerful recent vintages which I find undrinkable at present. This was fresh and fruit-driven with an agreable mineral purity. Tastes great now but not sure if it will benefit aging...

  • More of an elegant wine than a punchy powerhouse. This Pontet-Canet has a medium body viscosity with up front cherry fruit. The flavors quickly give way to tobacco, and then some dark berries at the finish. There is some forest floor earthiness to this wine. The lingering flavor is dark berry and tobacco.

  • Trinity Wine Fair (Stavros Niarchos Park): Very rich and fresh red fruit, sour cherry, blackcurrant, elegant, leather in the palate, sweet spices, ethereal oak frame, medium to full body, balancing acidity, long finish

  • They are making the wines differently now - in concerete for some part of it. As Alfred notes "its a really good way to raise the wine - if I have good fruit why should I cover it up with oak. The market won't accept that but I love the fruit character. And no, there is nothing I have changed in the wine making them approcahable earlier. THe equilribrim in the soil gives you the equaliribrium in the wine. I used to work with lab tests but now we don't care. We just taste the fruit and the decision that we do. We decide by touching the skin, biting the pips, and its very easy to pick over ripe but I want something that we can digest. I want to have a bottle for lunch and we don't feel 'loopy'"

Pure raspberry fruit on the nose, just lovely. ANd good crispiness and really quite lovely indeed. And as Alfred notes "its pure pleasure." And it is. They don't tire the palate at all.

  • Deep ruby in color. Black currant, plum and raspberry provide the fruit while licorice, 5-spice and thyme provide the spice with mint, mocha, vanilla, violet and sweet tobacco rounding out this awesome aroma profile. The tannins are very firm and need time to soften and the acidity is perfect. On the palate black currant comes out first with raspberry and plum on the mid palate and a lovely medium+ finish of licorice, anise and sweet tobacco. I can’t wait to see how this wine develops after 5-8 more years in bottle. An excellent wine indeed!

  • My first time having one of these.

It's a little expensive for what it gives you but it's an elegant food friendly wine.

Leather, pencil shavings and tobacco leaf with a bit of cassis are both expressed on the palate and the nose.

Finishes with a bit of chocolate and meat.

I'd rather spend 100 bucks on Clos Du Papes based on my impression of this wine.

Comparatively sweeter tannin and more red fruit the next day but this is still begging for a steak.

  • Pure cabernet driven nose and palate. Slightly rougher tannin than the 06, 09, and 12. Good.

  • I've had many vintages from this estate, I found this one to be the least impressive. Not a good QPR. Medium bodied with bright and juicy cherry like fruit, mild berry aromas, lots of graphite/pencil lead/charcoal on the palate, of which I've found to be a PC predominant trait. If I had tasted this blind I'm confident I would have guessed PC. Maybe I'm getting bored with this style, but there was no concentration, or density, or significant depth like others described. I have one more '10 I'm still holding...which I loved.

  • Drank last nite at Grapes tasting at X20. Surprisingly approachable wine though a relative infant (vintage apparently). Dark ruby core in glass. Lovely nose of black fruits, tobacco & wet earth. Obviously still quite tannic (as always with PC), but not overly disturbingly so. Great concentration & depth to this wine, with loads of black fruits, truffle, graphite and lead pencil. Will only get better with time, Delightful! DECANT!!!

  • I love this wine! Tastes like winemaker loves beets: smells and tastes like roasted red and golden beets, earthy, deep, and sweetly vegetal. Milk and bitter chocolate bounce around on the finish. Perfect pairing: rack of Aussie lamb, mixed roasted beets with truffle honey, smashed potatoes w balsamico syrup.

  • Dark ruby in color, the nose offers truffle, tobacco, cassis and black fruits. Concentrated, tannic and full bodied, the wine has depth, tannins to spare, ripe dark fruits, plum, dark chocolate and cassis. Leave this in your cellar to rest for at least a decade before popping a cork, and you're in for a treat!

  • I've had the 1996, 97, 2000, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011 Pontet Canets -- which is my lame explanation for why I opened a .375 of this. No grade. This is a crazily powerful wine -- after being open for 24 hours it's just starting to come together (relatively speaking). I can't evaluate it except to say a) when you open it, you can immediately smell it from 15 feet away; b) there is no reason whatsoever, if you have a set of taste buds like mine, to open another bottle of this for quite some time. This is one hell of a wine, making just as strong an impression as the other good years, but it's not going to be a pleasant experience right now. It's like the 2010 that way (it's not as powerful as that wine, but mighty close). Highly recommended for laying down.

  • Expressive nose showing scents of dark cherries, dark plums, black currants, walnut, clove and vanilla.

It is dry in the mouth with a fresh acidity. It has firm fine-grained tannins and a medium+ alcohol. It is full-bodied with pronounced intensity flavours. The finish is long.

It is a very good quality wine. It shows complexity provided by oak ageing, but these notes are note well-integrated yet. There's balance between concentration, tannic structure, acidity and alcohol and the finish is very persistent.

  • Deep dark purple color. Explosive notes of dark cherries, cassis, crushed flowers, licorice, graphite, tobacco, leather, also some dark chocolate and freshly roasted coffee. It's full-bodied, dense and powerful with a level of intensity and mid-palate persistance that really stood out in this tasting. But there is also a big structure backing it up with high acidity and high but very ripe tannin. Fantastic length. This has the stuffing to age for a very long time and would probably be my pick if I had a child born in 2014 and wanted something very age-worthy to put away and drink together for the 20th birthday.

  • Not such an intense impression as the 2015. Brooding, darkly mineral; a little odd, sweetly herbal liquor note present on the palate which reminds me of Benedictine. Odd.

  • Tasted at the chateau.
    Inky in colour.
    Perfumed nose.
Purity of fruit on the palate. Clean. Surprisingly approachable.
30% of the wine matured in new concrete urns.

  • Inky, dark in color with purple accents in its hue, this wine packs a punch with its full-bodied style. Surprisingly elegant for Pontet Canet, this wine is fresh with sweet, ripe fruits accented by chocolate and black cherry tones. The tannins are neat and refined, leaving you with the sensation of licorice, chocolate-infused cassis and black and blue fruits. 93-95 Pts
