Decanted 2 hours before dinner. Cork broke, but trusty Durand got it out. Nose a bit off putting on opening, but blew off nicely with time. P 92. I thought a bit better, especially last glass. Very good but not exceptional, as RP rated.

Took a few of these out along with some 2009 La Chapelle Hermitage for a special birthday meal of roast lamb. The Larcis Ducasse won hands down. This seems to still be improving. Many people dismissed its super high ratings, but it just needed patience. All classic Bordeaux characteristics. Still has a lot of time in front of it.
Tasted at an Evening with Friends alongside 2005 Mouton Rothschild and 2005 Chateau Latour. The 2005 Chateau Larcis Ducasse has reached it's apex, and is highly approachable although it will remain perfect for at least another decade. Immediately after opening and decanting the freshness of the nose and flavors were profound and continued to develop over a 2 hour period. The aftertaste lingered for a full 45-60+ seconds. A blend of 78% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon, this amazing opulent wine with very limited production should continue to give great pleasure. Kudos to it's St. Emilion origin.

Still young This needs a good long decant or more years in bottle This is very good now but there still are tannins and some rough corners that time will tame

Opened about 30 min ago. Wife is making a red sauce for dinner. So the smells in the kitchen are great. Stuck my nose in it for a quick whiff. Beautiful. And I’ll agree with a previous post, no sign of age. (Well there is some aging here but this wine has quite a ways to go but so far awesome). I’ll be back in an hour or so!
Ok I’m back. Still awesome. 1.5 hours in. Still had lots of tannins showing so this will definitely mellow (and in my opinion get better). Don’t think this is a 100 pointer like a previous notes but solid in the mid 90’s

What a wine, but it is too young. This needs more time to shrug off its tannin, which masks its amazing depth and subtley. I understand why this could have a a 3 digit rating, but great Bordeaux wine needs time. Admittedly this is forward for the vintage, but another couple of years will reward. Which critic gave this a window between 2010 and 2020 ? This recent tendency to give early drinking windows is a little annoying, primarily because I still listen to them. No more! I've just wasted one bottle of my half case in a very limited release volume.
Finally this is my first ever write-up on a Bordeaux wine. Yes 2005 Larcis Ducasse is worth to write home about it’s perfect maturity reminded me of drinking 1997 Joseph Phelps Insignia at its peak around 2016 (age 17-20). Total respect and call out to RP himself for identifying this perfect wine (the only vintage he had done so). Enjoyed this beauty over a multiple course of nouveau HK cuisine with Fung brothers.
Given it’s ultra-fine structure, this beauty can cruise for another 5 years at peak phase. It’s so balance and finesse and yet the complexity gave rise to the fun of enjoying the wine with each sip of elixir. Yes, it drank better than 2009 Leoville Poyferre right now. It has the right balance of ripeness of both red and dark fruits (only in those best vintages, otherwise got dominated by) along with typical bordeaux profile of earthy and mushroom herbal notes.
Another friend insists that i should try the 2005 Mouton with him … he insists it’s a game changer amongst 1st growth even though my experience with the 1st growth has been 100% disappointment with sufficient statistical significant number factoring in QPR as well. I often found other wines in RP’s 30-bordeaux list are more enjoyable consistently across vintages than the 1st growth.
However, I suspect 2005 vintage for Bordeaux is at the peak phase in general drinking more enjoyable than those 2000s.

PNP. Deep crimson and black color. No signs of age. Currant, boysenberry, vanilla and spice on the nose. Tart, firm and gritty palate, dusty tannins and juicy finish. Seems over oaked, but I’ll let it sit for an hour.
Update after 2 hours. Still tannic for a right banker, but the palate definitely improved with air, the oak was less noticeable and drying while the texture loosened up and fleshed out.

Decanted over cocktail. This was delicious on opening but after an hour decant it really blossomed. Seamless, balanced, and delicate fruit and copious earth with fine tannins. Eminently drinkable now, no rush though.

Forward nose of ripe cherries, plums, rocks and earth, floral notes. Full body, very ripe lush fruit, decent acidity, moderate tannins, a little complexity with maybe more to come, medium-long finish. Modern, delicious, excellent.

I think this wine has now gone from underperformer to greatness. Incredible depth on both the nose and palate. Lots of cassis, black fruit. Color is garnet and wine isn’t really tertiary yet. Medium tannins. Maybe softened a little with a two hour decant. Drinking beautifully and still seems like it has many years ahead. Great pairing with Steak Diane.

The wine looks inky colored. The legs are slow. There is moderate sediment in the bottle. It smells like blackberry and black currant (cassis). It tastes like black currant (cassis), blackberry, flint, light toast and lead pencil. The body is medium/full. The wine has smooth texture. The wine finishes long. The wine has low acidity.

PnP'ed. Brought this as backup, but still ended opening it. Last btl of the evening. Truth be told, this was very good had it been standalone... Young, polished, great concentration/suave, but needed more time/air - it was kinda lost amidst other wines like the '99 Cos, '10 Mouton, '98 Lafite etc... Perhaps it was also a matter of palate-fatigue? Anyway, a very good wine with a long life-span ahead!

From Magnum: My first Robert Parker 100 point wine; A setup for disappointment. Vinified in an international style, this well made wine is aimed at the California Meritage drinker, and 2005 provided the grapes to do this in Bordeaux. It's easy to see how this fruit bomb will stand out for a professional taster faced with evaluating dozens of wines at a sitting. The nose is etherial, and the first sip seems to just soak into your tongue, but it lacks staying power. Unlike a truly great wine, it does not beg for one more sip. Mostly Merlot, it lacks the acidity and tannin to hold up well to food. I'd love to use this as a ringer, in a blind tasting of California Meritage.

Decanted for ~3-hrs prior to serving (blind) - 4th of 10 wines (reds). This came across as the youngest wine of the evening. A very "polished" nose burst forth from the glass, with a beautiful sheen of roses, red-berries, intermixed with bits of chocolate & herbs. Considerably more "modern", this was no doubt a beautiful wine - I had expected a "blockbuster" given it was rated RP100 but it was very well-behaved with even a degree of elegance that was quite a bit unexpected. Like the L'Apparita, this was velvety smooth with notes of sandalwood, spice & red fruits (veering into the darker red spectrum) showing as it glided down the palate. Still very much a young infant, it'll be interesting to see how this will develop further with more cellar age... Nice!
Cellared since release, perfect cork and fill. Dark red to rim. Big cab nose, lots of cherry and cassis overlaying notes of fresh earth and flowers. Full body, packed with plush ripe fruit, fresh balancing acidity, well-tamed tannins. No tertiary complexity, long finish. Should continue to drink well for decades. Excellent though somewhat one dimensional, could improve if it adds complexity.

Ok, I know this was awarded 100 points. I was thrilled at the time and thought that my speculation and pains of overthinking and collecting wine from good producers in great vintages was bearing fruit. Now, for the second time, I am underwhelmed by the hype (not the wine) about this vintage and St. Emilion in general in BIG vintages past the year 2000, namingly 2005 and 2010. At the risk of sounding like a Burgundy drinking dick (you can argue the dick part, but I don't worship Burgundy), for me, this is just way too overhung and in need of freshness for my taste. Its definitely rich, voluptuous, compact, and extra oaked. The finish is great, but it just lacks old Bordeaux allure. Believe it or not, bottle not finished. I will be offloading a large portion of what I own and hoping to be wrong on the rest. Drink or Hold
Opened and tasted and hit a wall of tannins. Immediately decanted for 2 hours, tried again (still tight) and drank over an hour during which it continued to open. You can taste the vineyard with savory notes and subtle black fruits. Full bodied, long finish. Just an amazing example of Bordeaux. We bought 2 upon release and will hold onto the second one to mid decade.

This is packed with crushed rocks and stones, on the nose and salty palate, which is perfect for its layers of flowers, licorice, fresh plums, cherries and bitter chocolate. Full-bodied, energetic and with a salty, tannic finish, give it perhaps another year or two in the cellar and enjoy for at least 2 decades after that.
Great as a PnP, this is singing right now. Cherry, raspberry, cassis, dried earth, dried roses, cinnamon, clove, cigar box, cedar, lead pencil, milk chocolate, mint, perfect balance and very expressive. Great wine.

New world meets old. Bordering on overripe and over-extracted, but keeping just shy of the precipice. It’s been some time since I’ve visited this wine, and it is quite enjoyable. PnP with a few minutes in the glass and it’s nice and open. It’s starting to develop the earthier tertiary flavor I expect from a Bordeaux, but the fruit is still quite pronounced. There are lovely licorice and spiced dark cherries and firm tannins. It lacks some acidity and structure that makes Bordeaux aged so well, so I am not sure how this will fare in another 5-10 years. It’s not my favorite style, but is quality Bordeaux in a modern style, while respecting tradition and terroir.

I found this to be a little harsh tonight - tannic and acidic and seeming very young. Three hour decant didn’t seem to settle things down. Paired with duck breast with a cherry wine sauce. It wasn’t a great match. Seems like it’s still early for this wine, although I enjoyed it more a year ago.

Very young, and just on the cusp of entering window in about 3 years or so as a Bordeaux. This was pretty substantial with unmistakable st. emilion barrel char. Very lengthy with nuances of tar and earth. A 100 point wine, I think not, but a good wine with a hefty price tag for what it really is...HOLD

Popped my first of these to see where they’re at. Futures purchase, cellared since release, perfect cork and fill. Dark red to rim. Big cab nose, full body, lots of plush ripe fruit, no complexity as yet (will it come?), long finish. Outstanding.
A friend posted the following on a "what did you open today" thread about a 2009 Dominus and I thought it a perfect description of this wine as well: "A beautiful Napa Cab, while a big wine for sure, it was certainly balanced, with its 14.5 ABV totally in check."

This stunner keeps getting better and better. I think this is going to hit triple digits with another 2-3 years of age. Opulent, flamboyant and showy, with an incredible sensuality and decadent character that coats your palate with crushed rocks and perfectly ripe, velvet-textured fruits along with cashmere tannins. Deeply concentrated, this is a very textural experience. The finish has taken on an exotic quality that kept improving in the glass. It was impossible to put my glass down, without refilling it for another sniff and sip. And isn't that what great wine is all about?

Poured out about half the bottle into a decanter two hours before dinner. The result was an incredibly balanced and elegant wine that paired perfectly with Cornish Hen and a rice pilaf with cranberries and almonds. Cedar, cigar box, black fruit, all typical Bordeaux. Subtle tannins. Poured a little from the bottle about theee hours in. Noticeably harsher and more tannic, so decanting is definitely indicated. Vacu-vined overnight and tried 24 hours after initial opening. Harsh and more acidic, lost some elegance. Bottom line: decant and enjoy this beautiful wine, but no rush to drink.

Nose: Brandy cherries, strawberry, and perhaps grape jelly.
Taste: Now having been decanted for an hour, a very young wine. Balanced, tannic but approachable. Dried fruit still with a youthful bitterness. Served with charcoal grilled lamb chops, the umami of Bordeaux surfaces.
This wine is beginning it’s ascent into the drinkability window. 2 hours in this wine is ready to drink, but will evolve for years to come.

Very dark in the glass. Red fruit and mineral on the nose, some saline notes in the mouth. Tasted blind. Brought to CT SEA tasting with "2005 vintage" as theme, finished 2nd out of 10 wines (my first out of 10). This had real lift.

PNP and into the decanter, so initial glass not decanted other than waiting 10 minutes for the grilled fillets to come off the grill. Still young and plenty of tannin here. Well made, good fruit and doesn't feel entirely right bank, seems like a little more cab umph......nice wine but needs more air and time. One glass left in bottle and will check in tonight so see how the extra time and air help

I would rate the nose as 99+. On the palate, this is a New World wine, with big flavors and lots of depth. I actually think it needs about 3 more years to come into its prime. It was wonderful to sniff and smell, and pretty damn good on the tongue, but will improve in a few years. Still, I cannot complaint. It was pretty damn awesome!!

The best showing ever or this stunning wine. Luscious fruits are all over the place. The wine is pure silk velvet and cashmere, with a finish that does not want to quit. This is so good now, and you can take this to the bank, it is only going to get better from here. Thrilling is apt descriptor, if you're a hedonist like me.
Well this wine has the nose of a New World wine - big ripe blackberries, vanilla, and creme de cassis, a distinct smell of toasty oak (all by itself, not built into a more complex aroma), licorice, a touch of crushed peppermint.
On the palate minerality provides depth, with a distinctive Bordelais note. There is good acidity and a mouthwatering oak tannin note. The ripe black fruit flavors persist.
In its peak drinking window. Not that it wouldn't last, but I don't see this holding together to be a more dynamic wine years in the future.
66x Parker 100-Pointers from Bordeaux 1947-2010 tasted blind (Switzerland): Tasted blind. Dark purple. Nose of dark and dried fruit, red berries, toast, very modern and Merlot in style. Aaah, finally a soft and caressing palate after all these dry and over extracted 2005 St.Emilions. Full bodied, good length. Modern, not a 100 pointer, but balanced and well done. Group score: 17.02, group rank: 42/64

Wouldn't have opened at this point save for the rating of 100 from RP Might get there someday, wouldn't call this perfect now, but there is a purity and focus, length and there is nothing wrong with anything I taste. If this will be a 100 pointer, it shows the insufficiencies and deprivation of my upbringing. My parents never served me 10 year old 100 point Bordeaux. That probably explains a lot about what's wrong with me. The feel on the palate is compelling. One a year, huh?
it's been a year since my last TN...still luscious but not as lusicious as i remember...may be fading, shutting down or a bottle anomaly...worth revisiting in a few months

reading the notes I was ready to buy a case but thought it best to try one. Poured a glass through coravin. Fresh red fruit some tannin, melted to a more medium body mil chocolate red fruit style, with cheese. Needed the protein to come alive. As we all do.
This is a very superficial tasting note as no decant and only one glass w an aged cheddar.

An hour of decanting would have helped this bottle. Still, it was hard not to find the licorice, sweet boysenberry, chocoalte, earth and truffle, all wrapped up in a silky, elegant, velvety bow. The wine was produced from a blend of 78% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon.

Wow. This was really an impressive wine. After about an hour, this wine opened up beautifully. It has an amazing feel on the palate. So full-bodied and luscious. It is so well integrated, with terrific acidity and very elegant. I was surprised that a 2005 (even for a Right Bank wine) would drink this well at such a young age. Really outstanding. It's an expensive one, but is worth the price.

This wine has been very consistent from bottle to bottle, and drinks wonderfully right now with some exposure to air. This wine reacts very well to a double decant and drink the next day or a few hours decant. I like to pop and pour and let it evolve in the glass while the rest sits in the decanter. Pour a little more, cork it and pop open the next day for an even more enjoyable wine! Lovely deep Ruby color with slow legs. This bottle was a little more open with a nose blackberry, dark cherry, black currant, a touch of pear, with a dust, stone and mint tertiary aromas. Dark fruit predominated with flint, stony mineral, and black pepper. Full body with a polished texture and lively acidity. Long finish with a little more grip in the tannins than previously, but still polished.

Liquid sex in a bottle. That says it all. For those that want a bit more detail, this beautiful wine is packed with layer after layer of ripe, deep, luscious, sensuous fruit, ripe, silky tannins and the perfect combination of polish, finesse and power. If you like young wines, pop a cork. If you prefer age and secondary nuances, give it another 5-8 more years.
This took two hours to open up. Then the wine was glorious. Great nose, classic St. Emilion style, was wonderful. This wine is way too young now, but it will be amazing in 5-10 years.

Decanted for about 30 minutes then poured back into bottle. Lovely deep Ruby color with slow legs. Nose was somewhat closed and consisted of primary aromas of blackberry, dark cherry, black currant, a touch of pear, with a dust, stone and mint tertiary aromas. Taste of concord grape(!) blackberry, dark cherry, black currant (cassis), flint, stony mineral, and black pepper. Full body with a polished texture and lively acidity. Long finish with smooth tannins and moderate grip. After sitting in the bottle corked for a day, the aromas opened up, and the fruit blossomed. This wine is very approachable now and drinking well. However, I suspect it may shut down in the near future when the phenolics and tannins polymerize more, at which point the wine will likely need a good 4 or 5 years more to start opening again. I would just as soon drink this NOW with a longer decant (2-3 hours or more). Interestingly, it paired quite nicely with pepperoni pizza!

Popped and poured, but probably should have done a full decant and let it sit for a couple of hours. Nose showed classic young, right bank currants and black berry nose. Really clenched and closed up on the palate, with a thinness and dryness that is becoming for me a signature of these tight heavily structured 2005 bordeaux wines. Really not very generous at the moment, better with food but not an over the top hedonistic wine at this stage of evolution.

COLOR: Medium garnet with deep ruby rim (or meniscus for you cork dorks) NOTE: Surprisingly open for business at this young age, much in line with the other observations here. The nose doesn't have the Bor-dough funk I often detect but, rather, a strong minerality. It really smells like chunks of hot cracked granite with raspberry reduction sauce drizzled on top. No heat at all even though this is supposedly in the 14.5+ range. Mouth is rich with glycerin, sour not sweet, and full of black currant, loamy earth, cherry pipe tobacco, dried crushed bay leaf. The tannins are very ripe but substantial and clamp down a bit on the finish, where the minerality overrides the red fruit. I can tell this is a very well made wine as evinced by the glorious praise lavished upon it by the pros, and so I'm being generous and very forward-looking with my score (today, with a 3 hour decant it's giving me as much pleasure as an 85 point Merlot from anywhere). Unfortunately I'd just rather spend half as much on a great Buccella or Lewis Merlot and be twice as happy.

Day three...opening up with pure sweetness! Blackberry, cherry, blue berry pie filling and light mineral on the nose. Outer edges of the glass shine ruby red with a royal purple center. The front palate is a bit uptight for me, graphite and young berries, juicy in the back with a pleasant, even fading, soft jammy finish that leaves me reaching for another sip. I'm not the biggest bordeaux fan to walk the earth, but this is how I like it. Looking forward to trying this again next year.

The perfume of melted blackberry and plums with hints of fennel and raspberry is seductive. But, the fireworks really start when the rubber meets the road, or should I say, when the wine hits your palate? Multiple layers of decadent, fat, sexy, lush, ripe St. Emilion fruit grace your palate in endless waves of flavor. The best way to describe this Bordeaux wine is... it is akin to pouring liquid heaven over your palate. This is very polished and velvety with insane levels of concentration.

I'm rating this one potential though it is drinking surprisingly well in it's youth. Super dark color with a huge nose of plums and candied blueberries. Dusty tannins with a wave of concentrated black fruit. Somewhat clipped on the finish though I just popped and poured. With a nice round midpalate, this should lush out with some decant time and should age well for at least 15-20yrs. Dare I say a QPR at this price point but considering what other high end 05s are going for, this is a stellar deal.

Union des Grand Cru Tasting (Lighthouse (Pier 61, Chelsea Piers)): At UGC Grand Tasting in New York. Below expectations. The price here seems Parker driven. I do not see it. Very tannic with a good amount of heat. There was some subtle fruit, but not very complex or dynamic and the finish is average at best. Not a bad wine by any stretch, but I much expected better for an 05 at this price point.

Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux 2005 & 2006 Tasting (Hyatt, Century City): Of the 2005s I had tasted before this event the Larcis Ducasse was near the top in terms of aromatic complexity, it did not disappoint here either. The nose on this wine is gorgeous and opulent with notes of black cherry, plum, herbs, and slate. Nearly as expressive on the palate this reveals flavors of fresh berries, currant, and herbs on the lingering finish. The tannins are firm and this is obviously quite structured but that combined with the complexity already present bode very well for the future of this wine.

2005 Bordeaux: Episode 2 (Wine Exchange - Orange, CA): 78% Merlot, 20% Cab Franc, 2% Cabernet Sauvignon. This is a very refined wine. Delicate aromas of black cherries, red plums, bittersweet chocolate, and pain grille are followed by a lithe and polished palate of tart cherries, red currants, rose water, and smoke. WOW. First time trying this Chateau, and I'm glad I don't own any, because these are so tempting to drink. The nose is explosive. Rich black fruits, cherry and cassis, with pencil lead, burnt toast, and a hint of coffee. At this point, I'm not even concerned what it tastes like, I just want to smell it. The palate is equally as rich, and surprisingly the tannins aren't too obtrusive. Full bodied powerhouse with an herbal streak through the rich black fruits, spice, and great acidity. My favorite of the three '05 St Emilions tasted.

Tasted in March 2008, this wine was made roughly the same way as Pavie Macquin – entire berry fermentation with no pigeage – but more suave than Pavie Macquin. Very sweet fruit but good freshness and pleasant earthiness. Perhaps the slightly lower alcohol (14.5%) has something to do with this? Now, this is a fine wine, but the price sucks…

2005 Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux Tasting (Drake Hotel, Chicago, Illinois): 78% Merlot and 22% Cabernet Franc. This has gotten some very good reviews and they are well earned. This had a sloid core of fruit including blueberry and cherry. An earthy style with firm tannins. Well built and full bodied. This will be a long term ager. Not sure it is worth the $140+ price tag though. 94+ points.

UGC 2005 Bordeaux Tasting (and dinner) (The Drake): For me this was the wine of the tasting (surprisingly a wine a don't know well at all). Full deep red color. Towering aroma of perfumed black/red fruit and spice. Mmmmn, lovely rich chocolate black fruit with some spice and lots of pencil lead on the long structured finish. Great stuffing, but actuall enjoyable now too... 95-96 pts.

This Bordeaux is so plush, dense and concentrated, it's almost scary. This has everything a wine lover desires in a wine. This is packed and stacked with incredible levels of opulent, ripe, sexy fruit. The aromatics start the fireworks off, but the silken fruit bath your palate enjoys is the real fireworks.

2005 Bordeaux @ Union des Grand Crus (San Francisco, CA): Beautiful minerally nose crammed with fruit. Tighter and more structured than Pavie Macquin. The flavors are intense and the finish very long. This is to Pavie Macquin what Pontet Canet is to Pichon Baron this vintage. Excellent potential.

2005 Bordeaux en Primeur; 3/26/2006-3/28/2006 (Bordeaux France): En Primeur tasting. A very extroverted , ripe and oaky wine. Certainly very good concentration and structure, but not really balanced or elegant. Another wine I am certain many will adore.

Nice!

We bought 2 upon release and will hold onto the second one to mid decade.

My first experience with this particular chateau.

Might get there someday, wouldn't call this perfect now, but there is a purity and focus, length and there is nothing wrong with anything I taste. If this will be a 100 pointer, it shows the insufficiencies and deprivation of my upbringing. My parents never served me 10 year old 100 point Bordeaux. That probably explains a lot about what's wrong with me. The feel on the palate is compelling. One a year, huh?

reading the notes I was ready to buy a case but thought it best to try one. Poured a glass through coravin. Fresh red fruit some tannin, melted to a more medium body mil chocolate red fruit style, with cheese. Needed the protein to come alive. As we all do.
This is a very superficial tasting note as no decant and only one glass w an aged cheddar.

Young but in the window. Smooth integrated tannins. Lots of earth and chocolate notes with some fruit. Should be even better with a few more years in bottle.

I followed Jeff Leve's advice and decanted for an hour - glad I did. The wine is young and full-bodied. Earth, chocolate, coffee, and berries. Tannic, yet elegant. Gorgeous wine with a long life ahead, but why wait.

Deep garnet. Nose was almost a copy of a young Shafer Hillside-all sweet, berries, hint of mocha. Taste was surprisingly shy, hard to get much even after airing, vigorous swirling. I will taste the remaining bottle tomorrow, but I'm still surprised. Nose 99; taste 82-overall 90+

deep dark ruby hue...super ripe jammy black and blue fruits on the nose with notes of toasted oak, menthol, fresh herbs, olives and mocha...succulent and chewy black fruits on entry with elegant and fine dusty tannins producing a long and palate-staining finish...big and bold gives way to an ethereal lightness and and delicate finish, almost burgundian...a real treat

COLOR: Medium garnet with deep ruby rim (or meniscus for you cork dorks)
NOTE: Surprisingly open for business at this young age, much in line with the other observations here.
