Nose: cashew nuts, honey, tangerine oil, biscuits, hints of plum Notes: consumed after opening for 40 minutes and this is performing very nicely. I originally thought this would be way too young but this turned out to be a pleasant surprise. A big young and nutty nose with a nice saltiness in the aftertaste, this is a complex and refined Champagne that can certainly age for a long time but starting to show greatness even when consuming today. Drink: 2026+ Rating: 92

Not as flabby as most 06s and still showing good freshness, but I found the white chocolate notes the vintage imparts a bit offputting for my palate. A strong effort for the vintage but not worth the $$s for me

(48% Pinot Noir, 35% Chardonnay, 17% Pinot Meunier) Mittleres Gelb, intensive Perlage.

2nd of 6. About 2 years since my last bottle. This was spectacular. A very well balanced wine that developed nicely throughout dinner. A rounder Krug compared to 02 and 08. Those vintages still have too much energy and need time. This is in or near its prime and should drink nicely for a few decades. The finish on this lasted for minutes. This paired very well with caviar and pompano. Revisit 2026

Krug tasting (Freiheit Vinothek, Ulm, Germany): Glass: Riedel Superleggero Champagne Clear, pale golden color. Nice, fresh and youthful nose, a bit closed. On the palate very precise, elegant, round and creamy, fine mineral notes, extract sweetness. Lacks a bit of pressure and tension to be really great, especially after the truly great 08 Comtes. But it has upscale potential. 93+

Pardon the brevity, I don't drink enough champagne!
Single blind but bottles pulled at random.
Fresh brioche, cream soda, lemon rind and grapefruit. Fantastic tension and precision albeit slightly nervy. Felt like a first day in a new school type of energy - long run way for sure and definitely the youngest of the flight (went up against a 03 and 96)

Liz's B-Day Dinner at Singapore Swimming Club - Krug Vintage Vertical (Singapore Swimming Club): Krug Vintage vertical spanning Collection 1988/1996/1998/2000/2002/2003/2004/2006. Blind tasting. Not showing much. Acidity very much on display. Brawny on the finale. This screamed 'way too young' to me and unsurprisingly was the youngest wine on reveal. It is mostly potential at the moment. Best approached in a further 5-10 years

Not blind, at the maison Perfectly to drink it now. Lush and pleasant. Not for the eternity but great to enjoy over the next 10 years. Together with Emmanuel Brochet’s vintage the best expression of this not beloved vintage. 94-95

Disappointing, especially given the price point. PNP and drank over 2 days. Way too tightly wound, and my sense is, may not necessarily improve from here.

Huge intensity on the nose with apple, pear, caramel, hazlenut, and brioche. Expansive palate with a full body and sublime texture. Rich yet effortlessly refined. Long, long finish with spiced, dried apple. Incroyable. Drink or hold.

Some oxidative and Baroque notes in the nose. The palate was showing a beautiful elegant freshness with a fine acidity and elegant yellow fruit notes and some brioche. Very seductive and long finish. (IG)

2016 Napa Cults Blind - and a few Champs and such for fun: Though I haven’t been thoroughly stoked on a ton of 2006 Champagne as of late, I gotta tell ya that this bottle of Krug was in a really beautiful spot. Oxidative and a little brooding (sure, it’s a Krug!), but with a lovely balance that keeps the darker yellow and bronze notes from becoming too brassy. There is a richness that saturates the palate, but it is strengthened by lovely beams of minerality, acidity, and effervescence that keep this from careening into banana plantation or truffle soup territory. Not all were necessarily contented with this Krug’s performance, citing a little sluggishness here and there throughout the execution, but I was less displeased (look at me, Mr. Positive for once). Sure, it was a little chewy in spots, but the undercarriage was overall quite sound and still held a notable vibrancy.
I would say drink these sooner than later, unless you really like gumming your bubbles 20 years from now…and not because you will be too old without teeth, but because the wine will be too old and without any bite at all by then (my two-cent prediction). This is a denser profile in 2006 but it holds signature Krug flavor and resonance in a way with which no Krug fan should be disappointed.

"Only for Sundays" (Chicago, IL): This is better than on release. It does feel chardonnay-heavy to me, with a bit of smokiness and less of a mushroomy quality. The breadth has expanded and there's more weight than I remember, though it's still a far cry from those 1990s vintages. A little biscuity and plenty of chardonnay-like mineral acidity here. The more mushroom notes of 2006 seem to be dialled down. I anticipate better things with more age.

Bienvenue a Champagne; 4/20/2023-4/29/2023 (Les Crayeres, various restaurants, Les Avises and a many wonderful producers): This wine has for me always been one of the more open and expressive and immediate versions of wine. It’s probably true that it’s little brother the ‘08 will be longer lived and maybe even more spectacular at its peak, but somehow I find myself almost wanting to stick up for this wine. It’s always delivered. Always great. Pairs great with food but you can drink by itself. It’s classic Krug but almost a bit like the Grande Cuvée where it wants to be open for business almost right away. And yet a slight standoffish class to it. It’s hard to describe but maybe if the ‘08 is that super awkward super hot super rich classmate that never talks to you and you never know if it’s you or them the ‘06 is the gregarious person who is popular with all of the popular people but also seems to know your name. Maybe it won’t always be the case, but for the moment it is and I like this wine for all it brings.

PnP at a winebar so it didnt really get the time that it needed and deserved, but nonetheless it did put on a great show.
Got that Krug smoke, brioche, fresh lemons and white flowers on the nose. The palette showed grilled lemons, loads of butter, caramel and coffee.
It's a big and heavy wine but at the same time, effortlessly weightless. It definitely scratches the itch but there is no hurry at all, back to the cellar!

Golden colour. Slight malty nose with lemon and hints of ginger and cinnamon. On the palate apples (both baked and fresh green), touch of honey and digestive biscuits.
Deep and wonderfully rich. Pecise and balanced with whisps of smoke and salinity on the finish.
A pleasure to drink now and one to revisit in decades to come too as it matures.

Nothing compares to Krug! An extremely rich and complex champagne, with a wonderful mousse, crisp acidity and small, lively bubbles. Aromas of bruised apple, baked lemon, toffee, marzipan, coffee, brioche and white flowers. It has an elegant saline and stony minerality. Very approachable not, the finish lasts forever.

Served possibly a touch too cold, but very pleasant out of the traps. Colour fairly golden, but nothing unexpected. Apple, lemon, caramel on the nose; palate of lemon, bread (buttered bread, not brioche, as per my partner), distinct impression of salinity.
And then... it... just fell apart.
The first half of the first glass was the best. After it had warmed and been open an hour or two, it became a flabby, indistinct mess. Towards the end it picked up that musty-sweet finish.
Maybe the bottle was over-advanced, who knows.

Another winner from this vintage-- just amazing after just 15 minutes in a decanter. The mousse dissipated there but did not in the half that remained in the bottle. This time, I sensed throughout the 2 hours that the wine needs more time to express an unmistakeable urge to push forth the next level of complex toasty, wildflower and stone fruit notes. Right now, very approachable, with a sharpened nose that transforms from crisp citrus/acid into a lemon, toast, wild flower melange and then that wonderful combination of creme, brioche, lemon, peach et al in a super sophisticated delivery vehicle.

Impromptu tasting of 06 Champagne:. Salon, Dom, and this. This was the most reductive of the three. Tropical fruits and herbed lemon scone. Small bubbles. Lemongrass oil, tart white chocolate, bracing acidity on the front carried the middle where a lot of baked green apple emerges. Very unique and really my first experience with the 06 (I've had plenty of experience with the 04). Finished with a white chocolate and white pepper finish. The wine is really enjoyable right at this moment and wished that I was able to enjoy more of this. Honestly if I had some of this, I'd probably keep nearly all of my bottles in the cellar and drink the NV stuff.

Krug 2006. 94p+

Lonny Should Turn 65 More Often (The Kenwood, Mpls, MN): Light gold plus hue. Drank a glass over several hours next to the '06 Comte de Champagne. Two years now since the last bottle that still felt youthful. Now this has turned the corner and is picking up speed. Great energy, toffee, brioche, focused minerality with stone and chalk standing out over the citrus dominated fruit, crisp and really long and refreshing. Yes!

Layers and layers of acidity, full palate presence. This is what you call Champagne. Fresh baked flaky biscuits, as if I cracked the biscuit open a minute after it came out of the oven. Freshness in so many forms — sliced cucumbers, the lightest of citrus (yuzu), all in all bright as can be. Paired with Toro (layers and layers of salinity), Uni (a touch sweet with so much terroir, clearly was from Santa Barbara — confirmed), and Mackerel (BEST of my life, balanced salinity and oily presence, with the perfect silver skin).

Just incredible once again! It took 40 minutes for real Krug to emerge after a 3/4, nice but acid- driven pleasant opening. Such deep lemon creme, serious pear, lemon, non- yeasty lush tones emerge to a denouement ( for now) at room temp that brings forth an almost red- wine complexity profile

Brioche, something dirty, shellfish, prawn innards. Very ripe juice but weightless. Acidic but sweet fruit on the finish - very long finish. Wonderful minerality through the mid-palate. Red apple. Chalky minerality on the finish.

Off the wine list at Acqua in Cleveland. Was actually expecting it to be the Grand Cuvee as there wasn't much detail on the list so was pleasantly surprised to end up with the vintage. This is one that drinks better young although I'm sure age would improve on it. Just straight up cashmere bubbles. Our friends that we shared it with almost thought it wasn't a champagne given how soft it was. Mostly more spice style notes. Drinking very well.

This needed about 30 min to open up. It’s Krug so you will always get balance and a long finish. Overall very enjoyable that’s nearing its prime drinking window. Having recently tasted all Krug vintages from 1996 to 2008, this is nowhere near the same league of 96, 02 or 08 where you get much more energy and depth. Revisit 2023

BYO with LRD Folks (Daniel's place): Medium straw, with fine beads, and daybright. Some weight, but the acids do provide a lift and sense of elegance, whilst the lemon and peach flavours are ripe, and some white florals and bready, buttery feel. Finish of floral aromatics. Nice!

Extremely winey nose with toasted almonds. The palate has enormous freshness, creamy but warm at the same time. Brioche dominates at first, followed by notes of currants and autolysis. The juice lines the mouth on a flawless balance. The wine is already showing some complexity and has blossomed admirably in the glass, ending on a fresh, slightly oxidative finish with harmonious length. Excellent champagne.

Note made after 24 hours, scored as 'Outstanding' on the CT scale.
White gold colour, quite bright. This is a young Champagne, regardless of the number of the vintage.
The nose is fresh white peach, caramel, hay and a touch of toast/bread.
The palate is very long and intense, with power, but it purrs like a big v8. Palate is as per the nose with a fine bead. Very fresh and with many, many years ahead. Don't be deceived by the balance now - there is room for the flavours to integrate and the sum to be greater than the (pretty dashed special) parts.
I will note that sparkling whites don't really float my boat, so the fact that this wine has pierced my defences says something.

Present and immediately sharp with this power that captivates with autolysis, perfume, yellow apple and baking in all its glory. Full-bodied and broad in the mouthfeel with concentrated citrus, grape, autolysis, beeswax and nut. Obviously great minerality. Long complex finish and here comes the Champagnes Force - the razor-sharp acid that creates a tremendous energy and vibrant wine. Still a bit tight - manages 15 years in the cellar. Wonderful!

OLD Birthday Wines (a few days belated) (Chez S1): Big and ripe, with lots of toasty brioche, sweet lemon curd, and nice mineral cut. Even though it is youthfully flabby, and lacks the great undercurrent of Krug power, it is already quite good and should continue to improve.

BYOK: Dinner with Olivier (Ai Fiori (Langham Hotel on 5th Ave)): Much bigger and bolder than it's Clos du Mesnil cousin. This has a real backbone to it. Not quite as deep as the '08 but this wasn't meant to be that vintage. Still quite lovely just much too young.

Straw gold in colour, persistent bead. On the nose, freshly baked brioche, candied citrus peel, fresh rainfall, toasted almond, a touch of grated ginger, ground coffee, baked apple, burnt sugar and brown spices. On the palate, apples foster, lemon zest, with an immense earthiness, accented with a hint of nuttiness on the back end. Finishes quite long. Surprisingly open for business at this juncture.

Krug Vintage 2006. 93p

Epic Bordeaux for an Epic Birthday!; 9/1/2021-9/12/2021 (Paris & Bordeaux): Again it’s really much too young to be drinking now but not always the best access to aged wines when traveling and it’s easy to find yourself drinking through all of your champagne in Bordeaux. First glass of the day and it’s showing nicely if a bit more closed than you’d hope. Some extra complexity that PN brings to the blend. Nice way to start a tasting.

"Drink it while it's delicious" (Chicago, IL): I think this wine has been filling out since it was released. I recall being relatively underwhelmed by it on release, but today's bottle is more complete and full. It shows a little more of a darker complexion in comparison to the 2002 and 2004, but there is something still eminently Krug-like about it. That old cliche about the last glass being best applies here.

169, base 2013. I was not really suprised because I prefer often the cold 2013 instead of 2012. Less opulent but more elegant and focussed. Great Krug perfume with lemon fruits and less roasted aromas. A long distance runner. 95-96
CdM 2006, Typical nose of the vineyard. For me second best after GC 2006 in this triology. Beautiful precision. 96
Millisime 2006, the weakest, compared to 2002 and 2004 far awy in realtion to energy and precision. 93

The bottle was opened 15-20 minutes in advance, and left to open up on the table.
On the nose it’s fatty, creamy and powerful. It smells like freshly baked croissants, toasty brioche, lemon parfait, almonds, and clarified butter. The mousse is plentiful and delicate. On the palate it’s very complex and intense, but lighter in mouthfeel than I’d expected. Almonds, honey, french nougat, pink grapefruit, lemon peel and an insisting acidity dominates the palate. The finish shows the use of oak and refined autolytic notes.
This is a mega champagne! If all champagne tasted like this, everything would be alright. It is, however, also unreasonably expensive, and not necessarily worth the money. If you’re looking to splurge for a certain occasion, it’s not the worst choice, though. I imagine it will improve immensely over the next 5-10 years, and stay alive for 30. If you only have one in stock, save it a few more years.
Is it better than the 2002? It’s hard to say, but it’s a great wine in its own regard, and it was a grand experience to try it. I hope to feel this emotion again!

Tasted together with the 2004 s came across showing more ripe apple and white orchard fruit notes than the 04. Definitely more approachable and initially more friendly than the 04. Great to drink right now whilst the 04 comes around. Buy 06 for immediate indulgence and enjoyment and buy the 04 for more long term cellaring and investment as I ultimately feel that the 04 will be more long lasting and has all those 88 Krug elements which will make it one of the all time hits for Krug.

We probably drank this too young, but if you're gonna have a backyard Covid wedding, carpe diem, right? I felt good about giving our bottles 1-2 hours to air and serving only moderately chilled. The balance of pinot and chardonnay in this vintage is outstanding. For now, a floral nose meets a smooth, just-right body jam packed with flavors of fruit tarts, apple, and energizing lemon zest. This Krug’s finish lasts for days. I can't wait to see how it gets even more complex as it ages and the fizz mellows a bit.

This is very taut, lemony, and primary and is just starting to show some of that Krug tertiary magic. Definitely improved with a little bit of air time but this isn’t quite where I’d like it to be. Best Bottle before Clos du Mesnil Vertical Tasting (Rocaille Düsseldorf): not blind VEry accessible even at this young stage, typical Krug perfume, but not the length and concentration as usually. I'm not a big fan of 2006 but the clos du mesnil was denser and much more structured. 93-94

118014. Again, like my last notes, this is better than when I had it at the Krug House release party (though that may well be because I'm having this in isolation versus alongside the 2004). This has picked up more sappiness and intensity, and there is a fair amount of oxidative fruit and nuttiness here. Pinot is more dominant on the palate with its touch of mushroom. The Krug style has become slightly more pronounced as well. However, versus what I remember of the 2002 and 2004, this doesn't quite have the steely minerality on show, at least today.

The Triple Threat "165" Birthday Bash (65/60/40) (Minikahda Club, Mpls): Light gold color. Drank a glass over an hour plus. Nutty, buttery, mineral, a little sea air, sour apple and a most subtle hint of oxidative character on the nose. This feels very young still. Steely on the palate, chalk, full bodied, caramel and butterscotch, apple, slightly oxidative in a good way. There's all the stuffing here. A touch younger drinking than the '04 we had a couple weeks ago by comparison as one might expect. But really, not a lot different. 93+ to 94pts.

HDH auction at Spiaggia; 12/13/2019-12/14/2019 (Chicago, IL): Yeah, consistent with my notes yesterday. It's better than my experiences at Krug House. More rich and ripe, with good breadth and lovely intensity. And as I've said multiple times, I've more faith in Krug than my own palate. HDH auction at Spiaggia; 12/13/2019-12/14/2019 (Chicago, IL): Ok, I think I will have to just admit I have no idea what I am talking about. This is certainly different from my tastes of this wine on release. It has far more richness and weight than what I remember. Nonetheless, this is just really large-scaled and there's lots of raw power here. I still do understand a bit of the complaints that this wine was a bit thin (the acidity does feel a little tart). In any case, the jury's out, my notes are worthless, and I am still happy I own a good amount of this.

This is way too young and I'm sure we baby killed, but it was fun to get to try. So complex. Some annise, some coriander, some more herbal notes. It's got a lot less toast than I usually associate with the house. Served in a burg glass which worked well for it. Very nice wine.

Tasted at a local wine shop that I frequent, with a small group led by Nicole from Moet Hennessy. I was told this was mostly Pinot Noir with Meunier and a lesser amount of Chardonnay. The wine is a slightly cloudy light to medium yellow color. Again, probably a touch too cold. The nose is pretty forward with creamy vanilla, some yeast and an aroma I will call pickled olive that I kept smelling and that seems to be the best I can do to describe it. It was not off-putting at all but different than the other 3 champagnes we tasted this evening to be sure. The palate was bright with acidity yet had a somewhat sweet richness to it and flavors of pear, peach, a little lemon and baked green apple. Very precise and delineated in how it tastes with each of the flavors coming in a succession of layers through the fairly long finish. Really delicious with crème fraiche and golden osetra caviar. I'm not so sure the QPR on this justifies its price premium however.

Krug House (2006 release) (Chicago, IL): 118014. I really wanted to like this much more, and my previous note may have been a slight reflection of that, but I will have to admit that I really did expect more out of this wine. Of the four wines poured, it's sadly my least favourite. Next to the 2004, the difference in density and power is so stark. This just feels dumb and a little dilute. There are some mild stone fruit flavours, as well as a little bit of nuttiness on the finish, but overall the complexity and depth are lacking. As I wrote last night, I still have more faith in Krug than I do my own palate, so here's hoping that age improves this wine.

Chicago Krug Premier Event: A classically styled Vintage Krug in the making. Delicate stony mineral and lime driven aromas. Sharp, tense, and precise in the mouth with waves of generous dry citrus fruit. Comes across quite young, rich, and firm. Nice structure and fruit density. While over 10 years old, this is probably one to still put down for a few years as potential seems waiting to be unlocked. Not in the category of 2002, but more depth then the 2004 served along side.

Krug House (2006 release) (Chicago, IL): 118014. From the second(?) bottle opened here in the midwest. Initially, before we tasted the 2004, this seemed a little light, showing just a slight hint of hazelnut on the finish, and a lighter, white-fruited disposition. "Tastes likes Krug," I said. Next to the 2004, more of the pinot character shows, and the contrast is fairly stark; there isn't that raw acid drive in the 2006, and given so many of the other 2006s I've had, I would have thought this would show more raw power, but right now this feels fairly light. Admittedly, I expected a little more oomph, but maybe that will come with some more time in the bottle. In any case, my faith in Krug is stronger than my own tasting abilities. At the end of the day, I preferred both the 2004 and the 162eme showcased alongside to the 2006.

La Fête du Champagne Grand Tasting (Pier Sixty - New York NY): Walk around tasting. Ripe apple and pear aromas with toasted baguette and some gingerbread hints. Similar flavors are more restrained but with impressive density that I expect foreshadows where this will emerge in another year or two. I am probably underrating this wine.

Krug dinner at Farr Vintners (Farr Vintners London): To me ever so slightly underwhelming in this great Krug line-up this evening. In isolation would be terrific but we had a lot of context. I slightly preferred the NV 162 to this side by side. It is very fresh, a bit nervous at first but that settles with some time in glass. This will be very good but not great I suspect. Given the market price I think I would rather buy the NV 164 out of magnum served that evening as well (where a case of magnum is roughly the price of the 2006 from standard bottle) or I would pay up a bit and go for the 2002 which is also still widely available.

48/35/17 Pinot/Chard/Meunier. Medium plus nose shows sharp floral tone, white flowers, lilac, light must, lemon peel, wet rock. Palate is impressive, showy, fruit layers with lees notes, fresh earth, melon, both fresh and round together. Medium plus finish shows very well, smooth, adds complexity. Very good example.

Truffles and a couple of bottles: Vanilla and gingerbread, lemon and smoke on the nose. Great mouthfeel, creamy with great acid drive. Moderate power and depth, it's already drinking well but of course more time will serve it finely.

As large scaled and broad a Krug vintage as I can remember (I was too young to have tasted '89 at release, alas). Krug chose to show this next to the 2004 Vintage and the 162 (06 base) NV. The 2006 vintage clearly had far more in common with Grand Cuvee 162 that with the 2004 Vintage - this wine is mouthfilling, broad but not heavy. Having said that: the "impressive" feeling here is a bit similar to the same way that lots of new world wine is impressive but no one wants to drink a second glass. No doubt it will civilize in time but for now it's a big champagne that is unmistakably Krug in style and aromatics but not particularly "more-ish". Would I buy some to see how it develops over 20 years? Yes. Will I buy a lot: no. After tasting the Krug 2006 I bought more Cristal 2008 for less money than this will be released at. Given the amount of brilliant 2008 Tete de Cuvees on the market right now, the price tag here is hard to justify.

Nose: cashew nuts, honey, tangerine oil, biscuits, hints of plum
Notes: consumed after opening for 40 minutes and this is performing very nicely. I originally thought this would be way too young but this turned out to be a pleasant surprise. A big young and nutty nose with a nice saltiness in the aftertaste, this is a complex and refined Champagne that can certainly age for a long time but starting to show greatness even when consuming today.

Clear, pale golden color. Nice, fresh and youthful nose, a bit closed.
On the palate very precise, elegant, round and creamy, fine mineral notes, extract sweetness. Lacks a bit of pressure and tension to be really great, especially after the truly great 08 Comtes. But it has upscale potential. 93+

Very unique and really my first experience with the 06 (I've had plenty of experience with the 04). Finished with a white chocolate and white pepper finish. The wine is really enjoyable right at this moment and wished that I was able to enjoy more of this.

First glass of the day and it’s showing nicely if a bit more closed than you’d hope. Some extra complexity that PN brings to the blend. Nice way to start a tasting.
