Still viable. Took 45 minutes to balance out once decanted but then was soft, mature and lovely for about 90 minutes before starting to decline. Quite light and not too Mouton-like but lovely nonetheless for a wine this old from a minor vintage.

Drank over the course of a couple hours incl. grilled veal chop dinner. Quick decant for sediment. Notes of leather, umami, smoke, salt, black currant, blackberries, pomegranate. Got better and better as the night wore on. A great example of what a top winemaker can do in an OK vintage. Great QPR at auction!

Fruity and cool Pauillac aromas with dark berries, graphite, iodine and leather. Seemless and elegant on the palate. Lacks some power and concentration compared with the best vintages.
I have followed this wine over 25 years. In the beginning it was quite simple, and did not justify the price. The last 15 - 20 years it has, however, had consistently good quality, though missing on the concentration. It has developed very slowly, and he future seems bright.

Medium garnet in colour. Medium nose with notes of wet leaves, spices, toast, cooked black fruits. Medium acidity and tannin. Give it more time for aeration and the fruits will surface. The wine was rested for around 2 hours before opening up.

Bright acidity from the cool vintage still holding this together, fine sediment. Immediate reductive note gave way to a warm almost smoked oak note on the nose and all cigar box and cassis in the palate.

Cork was in tact but close to breaking down completely. Open and gently decanted removing light sediment. We poured into our glasses and it had very little nose, only light oak. Waited 15-20 minutes and the wine certainly calmed down and you could taste light berry and sage. All in all, it should have been drank a decade ago. My mistake, just would have enjoyed with more fruit.
Jeff Leve’s Nov 2018 note still was spot on for me one year later.
Light bricking, little sediment. Fragrant nose of red plum, smoke, cedar and a floral element. Medium full body, crisp red fruit, sweet and tart on the palate, along with some leather . Single decant, immediately open, lovely bottle.

Complex and exciting on the nose with spice, soil and cedar. On the palate supple, elegant and balanced with sweet juicy fruit, tobacco and some earth. Not very long and powerful but enjoyable and a pleasant surprise!!

High tones, medium/full bodied, with more interesting things going on in the nose, with its spice filled, tobacco, cedar, red plum, smoke and leafy aromatics than on the crisp, red berry, sweet and tart palate. No decanting needed, this requires drinking as the fruit is already in a slow state of decline.

Decanted 30 minutes prior serving. Clear red color with copper hue; first nose oak, china ink; 2nd nose, red berries, roasted vanilla; on the palate, medium body with amazingly tannins still present! Long clean finish. The most memorable thing was the nose on this 1979 Mouton! Paired beautifully with Kobe beef.

Got 30 min in decanter (mishandled by sloppy waiter - who shouldn’t be serving fine wine)..
Quite closed in first pour, but second pour was magical. Full powerhouse of white pepper, pencil shavings, leather, tobacco but a slight to the feminine side. Not as much musk and at-the-peak-of-summer-hard-labor-sweat as the great Pauillacs deliver but who cares.. This was just so great with still a strong presence of black- and blueberries, cassis and beautiful tannins still adding structure.
This wine is to drink now over the next 2-5 years. Does not get better, depending on provenance probably in its decline.

From a Burgundian cellar, this was a lovely surprise: notes of macerated red-black fruit, rich soil, spicy cigar box and a hint of leather introduce a medium-full, supple wine which still boasts a light framing of tannin, enrobed in juicy and quite vibrant fruit. Having admired the Giscours '79 in the past, this was another pleasant surprise. Decant a well-stored bottle for 30 minutes to experience it at its best.

First Growth Bordeaux 1978, 1979, 1981 (The Lot): Medium ruby color, red fruit nose with hints if cedar and graphite. Clean red fruit driven plate with spice and earth. A notch up from the 1981 in the prior flight. Nice acidity and energy smooth finish. Very nice but this also suffered vs the competition which in this case was a fabulous bottle of 1979 HB
This bottle was ranked 7th of the 8 first growths tonight

Dinner at Bar Marta (Chicago, IL): I really liked this -- this was about as classic a Bordeaux as you could find. The nose was a little weedy to be sure, but there was plenty of really nice green bell pepper aromatics to be had here. The palate had a lot of mulch notes, and seemed to be driven fully by acid at this point -- the tannins have fully receded into the distant past. Some life still, but I'd be more inclined to drink now than hold...

My last surviving bottle from the seventies, as from now one its only 2000+ in the cellar.
Some fear about the contents, as bad cork and mid shoulder level - however no fear needed.
+ Colour - orange brown at the edges, in glass Burgundy red + Nose - tobacco, coffee, cigar box, sweet, cooked dark fruits, some wood + Flavour - no more tannins to be found, very round and sweet in mouth, soft + Finish - very earthy, mild spicy, sweet, candy like
Again, I do love these seventies survivor by Mouton - if they are enjoyable, they are a hit !

Wine given to me as a gift on 12/25/82; thanks Janet! Bottle stored in cool cellar since receiving it. Bottle opened on wedding night!
High shoulder ullage. Bottle taken to dinner at South Park Café in San Francisco. Cork was fairly discolored and was almost removed intact. Color seemed reasonable, but the restaurant was too dark to provide more details on the wine’s color. Really enjoyed the nose of this wine. The vintage had a seamless element of currant and raspberry from the very beginning. After about a half-hour, a bit of smokiness showed up. Overall, the nose remained very pleasant and stayed pretty much true to form throughout the evening. Favors on the palate were nice at the beginning with secondary flavors tobacco leaf and leather. At about 20 minutes a bit a cedar appears on the palate. Nevertheless, the palate ended with a short, somewhat acidic finish. Overall, the nose was more enjoyable than the palate. Not going to improve. Drink Up
Lastly, South Park Café was very nice about letting me open the bottle at the table. They provided a decanter and wire filter to capture the broken cork. We gave them a nice pour in return.

Fill level top shoulder. Cork almost completely soaked through, very crumbly. Well evolved in colour, clear, quite bright with a quite dark core still. Lovely nose - earth, coffee, tobacco, old leather and also dark sweet fruit notes. Pretty rich actually. On the palate not quite as impressive unfortunately. Not much fruit left, the acidity is quite harsh and sticking out a little, a little thin and also a little drying towards the finish. Still hugely enjoyable and a positive surprise given the rather mixed reputation of this vintage in Bordeaux. Drink up! 91-93

1st Vivino Int'l chapter in Singapore (Sat. afternoon), Part-1 (Bok's place): For me, this was somewhat lost amongst the Bords, with perhaps more illustrious companions like the '82 Lalande, '83 Mouton, '85 Cheval etc. But make no mistake, this was still very good. Very typical nose of graphite, cigar-box and some earth that all followed thr' onto the palate, plus some blackberries and chocolate with secondary/tertiary notes... However, this still lacked a bit of "class" as opposed to the '83 Mouton. Nonetheless, enjoyable...

This must have been a mighty fine bottle! Lovely brownish red. It had age, but looked clear and very alluring. Lovely textbook Pauillac bouquet of cigar box, pencil shavings and cedar. There was a lovely floral element to the nose, almost like a lovely aged Burgundy. With time, some herbs, tobacco leaf and black tea. Palate was pure silk, subtly spiced, with sandalwood, fresh leather, tobacco, lead, cherries and blackcurrant. Very complex, with good acidity. Tannins had obviously melted away, but I was very pleasantly surprised by this showing. A lovely, classic signature Mouton Rothschild.

With Doug and Debbie at their place, drank next to a 79 Opus One. Splash decanted, drank over 2 hours. Cork was shot, bottle mid shoulder, not ruined but not ideal....
Wine was clear ruby color, brown orange at the rim. Nose of earth, red fruits, pencil shavings. Dusted red fruits, baked sour cherries, orange zest, soy, mushrooms, graphite/pencil. Medium finish, not the complexity or layered elegant finish you usually get from Mouton.
A classic wine - not a great bottle. Came from a good collector and was well stored, the gamble with a 36 year old wine...Past its prime but still fun to drink this classic wine

Popped this on my dad's 60th birthday! The wine is clear, day bright, garnet in the centre which fades into a hint of orange on the rim. The colour has a medium concentration with noticeable rim variation at the meniscus. No gas or sediment. Medium viscosity. On the nose, the wine is clean, moderate, considerably aged but still quite vibrant, displaying an elegant profile of red fruits - red cherries, cranberries, pomegranate, and hints of orange peel, coupled with a distinct note of graphite and pencil shavings, earth, herbs, and hints of chocolate. Oak is subtle and very well integrated. On the palate, the wine is dry, so delicate, crisp, and very clean, medium bodied. Remarkable elegance. Red fruits embrace the palate, showing slightly sour red cherries, cranberries, pomegranate, and a hint of tangerine. Tertiary notes. Lovely graphite, earth, and a hint of milk chocolate unfold, ending with some green herbs and possibly barnyard on the finish. Oak is subtle and very well integrated. Very fine wine, flavours are so subtle, harmonious, and balanced. Pinot like. Acidity is surprisingly medium+, alcohol is medium-, tannins are medium-, and the finish is medium+. I would say the complexity is high. Thoroughly enjoyed this!

Forced to open as a result of leaky cork. Inky purple with absolutely no signs of age. Deep, penetrating, black fruit bouquet. Stewed plums, Asian spices, pastille, wet cedar, pencil shavings, and Hoisin sauce aromas. The rich, full-bodied palate offers lots of fruit, picking up forest elements, mint, and a mineral-inflected finish. Long aftertaste. Impressive.

Aged Bordeaux, Cali Cabs and more with the Benchmark Wine Group in Greenwich (The Ginger Man in Greenwich, CT): Didn't know what to expect with this. Didn't know much about the 79 Mouton but I knew overall 78 was better vintage in Bordeaux. The wine had no fruit remaining and only mature notes of cedar, mushroom, earth and mint. Finish was decent but nothing spectacular. This is definitely past it's prime to me but still drinking decently for what it is.

Found with severly low level (bottom of shoulder) - still good color, but very musty nose - decanted, but did not drink with dinner - after 2 hours the nose improved almost to neutral - but the structure and finish was decent. Still a classic wine if the cork had held up.

Mother-in-law's 60th birthday present to me - what a star! Decanted for 90 mins. Colour still very deep, woody minty blackcurrant nose. Initial taste tannic and austere, but opened up over 45 mins to be a complex long mouthful. Ripe spiced fruit appears with layers of vanilla and chocolate. Very very long. This wine didn't have a great reputation in the community but it proved to be an excellent special occasion wine. Thanks Maureen. Xx

A well-stored bottle from a cold cellar. Top shoulder fill. Cork removed in one piece, fully saturated on all sides. Tasted first from bottle, then decanted. Clear rich medium blood-ruby. Bouquet subdued initially -- just some forest floor and dried herbes de Provence -- but then bloomed after 10 minutes into classic Pauillac -- leather, cigar box, dried red berries, hint of spice. Likewise, the palate took a few minutes to integrate and settle down, and was glorious thereafter. This wine is all about finesse, polish, refinement. It complimented the meal (braised beef) rather than distracting from it. A noble, aristocratic wine that improved steadily over the course of an hour, picked up more fruit toward the end, and was finished all too quickly.

Saturday Tasting Group (Knightsbridge Wine Shop (Northbrook, IL)): This wine is ready to drink. A bit past its prime. Some bottle differentiation between what I've had recently too. Color shows some nice age, slightly medium dark brown at the rim ruby throughout. Some light caramel, yellow apple, nutmeg and deli meat flavors on the nose. Again, the distinctive smelly cheese/feet play occuring again - not detracting from the wine as a whole though. Still some nice body showing lively grip, acidity and some very light alcohol presence. A treat to be able to try a different bottle of this Mouton within a month of each other.

Tasted from a bottle opened a day (or two) before. Dark core, bricky rim. Quite perfumed nose with rose petals and strawberry jam, not too strong. Med+ body, still holding well its structure, quite elegant, but obviously on a decline. Fully resolved tannins, not much (red) fruit left, a bit diluted finish. Quite long, but fading. Might have been better upon opening, naturally, alas I wasn't there earlier.

Saturday Tasting Group (Knightsbridge Wine Shop (Northbrook, IL)): Nice color. Bright ruby red with salmon tones around the rim. Super stinky blue cheese and feet aromas with bright stewed spicy berries. Nose is very nice, though the palate is tart and acidic. Overall a leaner showing with a shoter finish. Very unique and expressive of its terroir. Great experience.

Amber/rust color. Aromatics of dried red currant, earth, graphite, tobacco and cedar. The palate had some decent fruit left, but was fairly lean with a non existant finish. The nose was the best part of the wine. Definitely past its prime. With food though, perhaps a ribeye or similarly marbled steak, I believe this would have showed better.

Dark ruby color, with a hint of brown around the edges. Muted bouquet of dark fruit on the nose. Even though it was faint, the finish lasted almost 50 seconds, impressively medium-bodied. It was clearly past is prime, but there were no major faults and it was not completely without pleasure..

Thursday at Heidi's: Double decanted about an hour before serving and poured blind to Chris and Steve. The color is a dark mohogany with some brown hues. The nose brightened considerably over the first hour to reveal red fruit with cedar, spice, a mild barnyard stink and hints of dill. In the mouth this is very smooth with fully resolved tannins and flavors of dark fruit mixed with coffee. Initially expansive flavors fade a bit as the acidity builds throughout the taste leading to an abrupt/clipped finish. Struck me as an enjoyable but ultimately uninspiring wine.

Tasting Group Dinner - Bordeaux at Heidi's (Heidi's, Minneapolis): Tasted blind. Dave revealed that this was a First Growth, and I guessed early '80s Haut Brion. When we first double decanted this wine, it was brown/amber in color, and the nose was pruny, over-ripe, and riddled with VA. An hour later, the color had improved considerably, and the wine had added fruit, spice, and weight. At age 30, the '79 Mouton is clearly on the way down, although the initial palate still offers up nice red cherry fruit and complex, leafy secondary flavors, with totally resolved tannins. However, the finish turns sharply acidic. The acidity got more pronounced with air, and by the end of dinner this had really fallen apart. Drink up.

Stong pleasant aroma when decanting. No hint of age in the color. Color was light and Pinot like. At first leathery and not full. After 30 minutes opened up, but never achieved the full silky texture that I had hoped for. It was like an all star that played one year too many, but had a decent finish to his career.

Last bottle in from a case purchased in 83 or 4. Although the cork (like the last couple of bottles) was fragile and broke upon extraction, the wine was not affected. This one was fabulous. Deep brownish red with no bricking at the edge. Upon opening had the classic old bordeaux nose and slight barnyard hints. Within a few minutes it opened up with cherries and red fruit on the palate, long finish. Wonderful wine. Sadly, the last bottle.

nose: some interesting barnyard funk with tobbacco, smoke, black currant, and some vanilla tones
taste: very silky and elegant. Kind of surprising from a mouton as I'm used to them just exploding and having lots of punch to them. Nice flavors of cassis, smoke, and vanilla
overall: wonderful elegance to this wine that is atypical of mouton. Nice profile and a very polished finish

Impressive colour, still sharp red despite its nearly thirty years. Lovely nose, roses. From a double maghum - Immediately upon pouring this wine had an exceptional nose of blackberry along black currants along with a bit of cigar box. Unfortunately when tasted the wine started fine then died out in the mid-palate and on the finish. After 15 minutes the wine faded almost entirely. If it had tasted anything like the first aromas it would have been very good.

This note written at time of consumption. I have to confess a slight disappointment with this wine, although the circumstances surrounding its consumption were far from ideal (there a tale could be told...). This was so perfectly opened at the right time.

+ Colour - orange brown at the edges, in glass Burgundy red
+ Nose - tobacco, coffee, cigar box, sweet, cooked dark fruits, some wood
+ Flavour - no more tannins to be found, very round and sweet in mouth, soft
+ Finish - very earthy, mild spicy, sweet, candy like
Again, I do love these seventies survivor by Mouton - if they are enjoyable, they are a hit !

Impressive.

Drink up.

If it had tasted anything like the first aromas it would have been very good.
