First Wednesday Wine Club (Napoli in Bocca, Haberfield): Served blind. Ripe black fruit, concentrated, slightly chalky notes, slight leather, dense, off dry, concentrated black fruits, loads of tannic grip and alcohol...nothing shy about this. I guessed Barossa Shiraz early 2000's

Purchased on release, stored at 55 degrees. Popped N poured. Tasted at around 60 degrees. I forgot this was mostly Grenache(65%)/35% Syrah. Medium ruby w/little edge bricking this presented a fragrant nose of mixed red/black berries, aromatic pipe tobacco & kirsch notes. Any oak seemed fully resolved and integrated. Rich port like mid palate of ripe sweet black berries with subtle notes of toast and licorice ending in a relatively long finish. Second day tasted against a 375ml pour off the '05 d'Arenburg Dead Arm the Eclipse got lighter and the Dead Arm put on weight and tasted much better than it did two weeks prior. All in all this was fairly tasty stuff but better on its own or w/a char-broiled steak & mushrooms.

A big, bold and powerful Shiraz. The 2005 Eclipse provides a massive array of dark fruit. There is a beautiful perfume of white flowers, eucalyptus, candy, raspberry and milk chocolate. The palate comes across as lacking a bit of integration tonight. It is still a 'young' wine. But there certainly is plenty of balance too. Texture and structure is perhaps not that necessary to mention - there is enough for both king and country. I am sure time will do this effort justice. It drinks terrifically well tonight too, but given some further rest in the cellar it will most likely continue to develop even further. (score is 96+)
Tasted in a flight with 2005 Colgin IX Estate Syrah, 2005 Ojai Special Bottling Bien Nacido Syrah, 2005 Noon Shiraz and 2005 Kaesler Old Bastard Shiraz.

A big, heavy wine. Clocking in at 16% alc/vol this wine is not apologetic at all. Big, in-your-face aromas of ripe, sticky black fruits, smoke, vanilla, and wood. Flavors are similar but coat the tongue and warming the back of the throat. The wine seems to almost absorb light.

Eclipse is generally my favourite of the Noon stable. Big wine which pushes the boundaries but manages to pull it off. You have to like the style but it was lovely with some slow braised lamb shanks on a very cold winters night.

Deep dark crimson with an inky, syrupy structure. Vital and beautiful! Inviting aromas of Ripe Dark Berries and Cherries. Fruit in Rum. Multilayered nuances of Fresh Herbs, as Thyme and Lavander, Leather and freshly baked Cake. Perfume and traces of Vanilla. Present Eucalypt. Very interesting, rich and complex! Dominant and rich fruit flavors of Ripe Cassis, Blackberry, Cherry and Plum. Again, some Fruit in Rum. Some Herbs and Leather. Finishes warm and long with beautiful Fruit, peppery Spiciness, Anise and round tannins. Great mouthfeel with a creamy texture!
A full-bodied, rich, intense and concentrated, but balanced wine, which appears absolutely round with good proportions. While it drinks beautifully now, it´s good for another 5 years in the cellar at least. See more details at cellartv.wordpress.com

Massive wine! Gobs of fruit, very concentrated and viscous. It was a bit tight right out of the bottle, but after an hour or so it improved quite a bit. This is surely a polarizing wine but I enjoyed it quite a bit despite the fact that it's a little over the top.

Unashamedly bold and juicy with a impenetrable deep dark colour. Despite its weight and alcohol, it felt well in balance and a good example of its style. Not pretending to be anything other than what it is which is why it was so enjoyable. Held up really well over 3 days and think this has the structure to age well for another 5-10 years. Best to have alongside a good steak or roast.

First of the highly rated (in some quarters) Aussie cult wines that I have tried. Decanted for 90 minutes before consumption.
Opaque, brroding inky colour with no visible rim. Plums, cherries, oak on the nose and a smooth velvety tannins and full-bodied mouth-feel. First glass was lovely, but by the end of the bottle (split 3 ways) it felt more like a glass of port than wine.
A massive wine which was certainly impressive, but not one that I would choose to consume regularly.

Dinner at Giant Garoupa (Giant Garoupa Restaurant): Pretty decent, well-made wine, but I did not like this quite as much as I did the 2006. Somehow, this came across as rather bigger, more obvious and perhaps less well-balanced. Still though, it was a decently good wine. The nose was quite full-on, with sweet wafts of black cherries and cassis touch by a little soupcon of earth and some stemmy, eucalyptus accents. Thos stemmy notes seemed to be amplified on the palate, opening up from eucalyptus into almost Chinese-herb and spice territory, with roots, cinamon and anise notes sprinkled amidst the wine's huge flavours of blackberries, blue berries and cherry chocolates, moving later into prunes and plums at the finish. It was a noticeably big wine with lots of sweet fruit, yet for all that, it was well-balanced enough so that I would not have guessed that this pushed 16% alcohol. It was that same fresh balance that kept it nicely drinkable as well. This is not a wine of great finesse and, as a Grenache blend, it was about as far away from a classic Chateauneuf-du-Pape as one could get. For all that though, it certainly was not a bad drink - just not quite my style of wine. It should improve with time though - this really should just be shoved aside in one corner and not opened until a good 6-8 years time.

Fantastic nose of dark fruits (mostly blueberry) and so much going on on the palate. Massive, almost port-like on the finish, but even with the 16% alcohol , it didn't taste hot. Well balanced for such a big wine and very complex. Wish I had more.

Pretty remarkable bottle of wine. A bit of a monster, with rich, blueberry pie tones. Full, luscious mouth feel. Great acididty keeping this fresh on the finish. Really no heat of alcohol notes despite something like 16+% alcohol. In fact, the sensation is of cool fruit. Very fresh. I don't think I'd bother holding this, but it is amazingly delicious. I don't know how Noon does it, as no other high octane Aussie wine I've had has the cool tendencies and lack of heat that I get from the Noon wines. Not for everyone, but should be tried. 93-94

HUGE nose filled with dark berries - blueberry, mulberry, blackberry. Palate was similar, but with a quite pleasing creaminess. High alcohol (16%!) was showing on the finish and the tannins were very subtle and fine-grained (almost non-existent). Combine that with a more viscous mouthfeel and a slightly sweet disposition, and this came across more as a port than a drinking wine. Probably would have made a delicious reduction ...

Nice red colour. Huge nose of raspberry, menthol, pepper. Full bodied, extracted but not too overdone. Juicy, very ripe but mostly red fruited. Long finish with licorice, olive and tobacco/cigar flavours. Showing its 16%, the finish is very hot and spirity.

WOW! Probably the best bottle of wine that I have enjoyed this year. The flavors of raspberry, blackberry, spice, cherry, pepper and cranberry display great purity. The wine flows with strong, vibrant acidity. I don't know how this will age- whether it iwill integrate or lose its fruit. I think the wild acidity and great purity of fruit make it delicious to enjoy now.

High Alcohol (16%), Fruit Driven grenache dominated blend. Rasberries, red fruits, not a hige amount of tannin. Reminds me lots of some of the 2003 Chateauneuf's but without any kirsch-like /spirit notes. Fruit and heat still fighting each other in this wine, and I suspect, like many Eclipses, this will be at its most enjoyable young before the primary fruit fades (leaving a lot of alcohol behind). 2007-2010. Fun.

Wow! Just like the review above, I am extremely happy that I opened this up early to gauge it's potential. Probaly the best Eclipse that I have tasted. Full bodied, pure and seamless with hints of licorice, black berries and vanillia. No hot spots, and an awesome finish! I was lucky to get 2 six packs and I was going to share one of them....but after tasting it last night, I am keeping them all ! :) Like it says on the bottle, decant for at least 30 minutes prior to drinking. I think RP will agree and rate this very high!

A truly massive, eye-opening Eclipse with loads of blueberry, blackberry, cherry compote, lemon zest, pepper, and cinammon. The nose is somewhat undifferentiated at this point, showing sweetness and rich fruit, and the color is a gorgeous purple (not black). The wine is clearly huge, but I don't find it hot in the slightest. Noon fans will love the 05, and I'm pleased to have broken into my stash so early to have an idea of the quality of the vintage (my favorite since 2001). This is what I like in Aussie shiraz (and, in this case, a shiraz blend) - intense, powerful, teeth-staining, laser-like fruit without any of the cough syrupy, gloppy, jet black and roasted molten lava goo sensations.
