Perhaps the most youthful of the case so far. Double decanted a couple of hours before serving. Very dark in the glass, no bricking at all. Served blind. Guesses were c. 10 years post vintage. It had a lightly pickled chestnut edge to the mature red fruits. Some sandalwood and hints of grated posh chocolate from the Merlot component. With air some beef pho hints. It was at its best half an hour after pouring and then slightly drew in on itself. Lovely wine of real richness and depth/

Still a wonderful, classic Bordeaux with plenty of tobacco notes, coniferous forest floor, a little mocha, remnants of a dark berry fruit, noble saddle leather and graphite; appears dark overall and rather cool in its flavour. The tannins are fine-grained and now very polished, the acidity is medium+ and very harmonious. A truly classic, excellently matured Pauillac, good bottles of which show plenty of complexity, balance and a beautiful length.

Small supper at Noizé (Noizé, London): Opened in place of a dull 1989 Leoville Barton. Due to slightly crossed wires this was essentially splash decanted and poured. Suspect this contributed to a younger feeling and less giving wine than previous bottles in the last year. It is still joyous. Dark fruited with cedar and pencil notes. Just a spot of star anise. Palate is rich and long, tannins fully resolved and this is so more-ish. Improves with every sip. 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc.

Found a forgotten 375 split in the back of the wine cooler, time to drink. The color was dark garnet colored, just beginning to take on a rust hue, medium bodied with a slight amount of the backbone structure remaining, the fruit was gone leaving only a hint of what it might have been, with damp earth, cedar, pencil shavings and a bit of funky wet wood remaining. Barely, but only slightly drinkable except for the adventure of trying an aged vintage wine. https://unwindwine.blogspot.com/2022/06/dads-day-father-son-tasting-birthyear.html

Another very nice bottle of this wine; certainly fully mature, but holding up well. The nose offered some dried plum and blackberry, mint, bell pepper, tobacco, damp earth. The palate has resolved tannins, still a bit of acidity, good balance and is overall tasty. I don't really see any upside here, but it should hold for a while yet.

This bottle showed superbly; the nose was very complex with dark berry fruits, tobacco, cedar, green bell pepper, herbs, damp earth, hints of mineral notes, dried violet. Just a pleasure to smell. The palate still has excellent balance and depth and for the age and price drinks like a relative bargain. Great pairing with Christmas prime rib.

Great mature bordeaux wine. Decanted 1h. Cork was in good shape, about 60% done. This did not show almost 40 years old, bottle was in great condition, I would have said 25 years max. Classic mature Pauillac style. Maybe not incredibly complex but really pleasant gentle balanced and elegant wine. This incredibly has more years in it

Beautiful bottle of well aged Bordeaux. Cork was about 90% done. Interestingly fruits on the nose are mostly red, such as currants, cherries, raspberries but also tobacco, earth, dry leaves, floral note, vanilla. Palate is delicious along the same flavor profile as nose, with beautiful secondary characteristics, still present acidity and beautifully integrated delicious tannins which support long fine finish. I wish I had more of them

Just a beautiful wine.notes of forest floor, old cranberry. musty earth. But just elegant through and through. Cork was about 80%done so this wine has some more life in it. Opened for about 45 minutes. Long savory finish.

Bottle in excellent condition with bottom neck fill and a only half way soaked cork. Slow ox'ed for one hour. Garnet with slight browning towards the rim. Slightly corked but still drinkable. Light to medium body. Plenty of sous bois. Some dark fruit. Have had quite a number of inexpensive 82 Bordeaux in the last few years, and most of them still showing very well (Louviere, Phelan Segur, Potensac), for this Duhart there seemed to be a good underlying wine but in terms of complexity or concentration nothing that would justify the premium. Around 89-90 for this bottle if one looks past the cork issue. Drink up

Nose: Beautiful cassis, blackberry, black cherry preserve, tobacco and sweet floral aromas just roll off this in waves. Palate: Has developed well in the bottle with a silky fine palate of cassis, blackberry, graphite, leather and cedary tobacco notes. Perhaps not a pronounced as the nose would suggest but this is in great shape on the palate. Finish: Not super complete in the finish, but dried black fruits, cedar and leather are prominent. Hint of acetone from time to time.
A really nice bottle, and makes me hopeful for what modern classics from Duhart like 05, 09, 10 and 15 might do in the cellar.

Opened 6 of these and 4 were very good, full of blackcurrant, pencil, and leather (92). The other 2 were marred by tomato vine notes and struggled to break 85 points. Not in need of much air; safe - and perhaps advisable - to pop and pour.

Dinner at the home of a bachelor (Newtown, Wellington, New Zealand): Extraordinarily herbaceous nose, with green bell pepper, green olive, lifted cedar notes, and an intensity of expression that almost felt like a TCA character, such was the power of the lifted herbaceousness. Looking and tasting beautiful. This is not an opulent 82, but it is certainly very complicated, with an incredibly strong personality.

Needs 60 min in glass. This bottle was certainly on the decline. Some fruit left but lacking in body and finish. Still delicious but can’t be one of the better bottles given the previous reviews.

Fantastic nose of cassis, tobacco, sweet spice and flower. Wine imparted weight and lush flavors. Hard to believe this was $10ish a bottle when released
Cork was wet 3/4 up but the top 1/4 was dry and the fill was in the neck, a testament to my cellar (ahem) as it was bought on release. Nose was faint but clean and clear, color was good (a little bricky), and there was sediment on the sides of the bottle. After 45 minutes in decanter taste was still faint and a bit tart. After two hours and with food, the tartness went away but the fruit never came up, was still subdued. Faded badly from there, at four hours was totally gone. Nice and easy to drink at the end of its life.

it still needed some time in the glass to fully unwind : at first some green touches and slightly unripe, dried fruits, fresh acidity that wasn't too dominant, tobacco, smoke, round, after some time it gained complexity

Earth, forest floor, bitter, greenish impression, nice acidity still, dried red fruits. Unmistakenly good and impressive given the age, but for some reason I wasn't feeling this wine.

Brought to a tasting ..... 3rd wine of the flight ....
+ Color - not as evolved as one would think of a wine this age + Nose - earthy, leather, mushrooms, cacao, dried red fruit, licorice + Flavor - light, playful, inky, woody, still a bit dry here and there + Finish - slightly bitter, green, dry, slightly acidic
Perhaps I was expecting more of this bottle, but lucky it was at least ok. The cork was pushed up, crumbled and smelled really funky. At least the wine evolved in the decanter, and we all enjoyed it.

Dinner at home with family. My two bottles decanted together after original choice (Ch Canon '90) was flawed. Top shoulder, good corks for age and relatively clean decant (well crusted). FYI previous owner obligingly left a label informing me that he originally purchased these bottles at £12.50 (=$21.10 then) each in 1989 - if only! 2hour decant - would recommend longer with hindsight. Good colour with the considerable contrast between the clear edges and the deep black/red core the only obvious sign of age. Concentrated narrow band blackcurrant/dark fruit aromas with hints of Pauillac tobacco. In the mouth there was initially a distinct capsicum green tint that was OK as it helped cut across the richness of the duck but fortunately had cleared by the cheese course (3+hrs from opening). This allowed the fruit and integrated tannins to dominate and the wine to blossom. Medium bodied with very good length. An impressive wine coming towards the end of its plateau and for drinking up over the next 2-3 years.

Fresh red and black fruit, floral notes on the nose with some wood / vanilla. Only a hint of distracting heat on the back of the nose. Smooth on the palate with umami notes on the back. I still think that this wine needs a little more time.

Stood up for a week, doubled decanted and left to breathe in bottle for 3hrs before consuming. Bottle was in great condition with good fill level. This was a beautifully mature Bordeaux drinking at its peak. Aromatic, well balanced and complex with paulliac typicity. Tannins are smooth and perfectly integrated. Time has brought out the wine's depth and secondary flavours but it still has its robust core of dark fruit. The medium length finish is clean and well defined. Enjoyed this thoroughly.

Top shoulder fill. Stood for 3 days, moderate sediment. Tricky cork, used a Durand with success.
Still purple/red. More mature on the nose with dried dark blue/black fruit and herbs. Minerality and touch of cedar on the palate. Nicely balanced with food friendly acidity. Medium finish.
Lovely and improved over 3 hours.
Nice now, no rush (disagree with the CT window and would push the "drink by" out to 2025+).

Pristine bottle, high fill. First impression is a soft, fresh and elegant wine, complete balance. Very mild and charming and comfortable. Great tension and hidden power throughout the long and lasting finish. Classically styled, of course, and still youthful but more in a St. Julien/Pessac vein. Not your typical sturdy masculine Pauillac. Very impressive.

Karen's Birthday (The Straits Wine Company @ UE Square): Popped and poured. But by the time I got there, already slow-oxed in bottle for about an hour. I saw that the corked was soaked almost to the top. Appearance is clear, deep intensity, garnet colour. Legs. Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with herbaceous green bell peppers, tobacco, blackberries, blackcurrant, and black cherries. Developed. On the palate, dry, good high acidity, medium alcohol, integrated slightly dusty medium+ tannins, medium+ body. Medium+ flavor intensity, with flavours of herbaceous green bell peppers, tobacco, blackberries, blackcurrant, and black cherries. The sweetness of the blackberries increased with more air. Very fresh fruit flavours, amazing for a wine so old. Long finish. Outstanding quality. I liked the sweet fruits, if only there was less herbaceousness. Drink up now.

Deep dark velvety, garnet. Hardly any signs of aging. Bright, dense and vital! Inviting aromas of Ripe Dark Berries; mostly Plums, Blackberries and Cassis. Earthy Characteristics. Licorice aromas paired with Dark Chocolate, Vanilla and Eucalypt. Fragrances of Tar with little Leather and Tobacco. Languorous, multi-layered and beautiful nose! Some Fruit Flavors of Dark Berries and Fruit in Rum. Great complexity of secondary characteristics with mostly Licorice, Tobacco and Dark Chocolate. Some Leather and Earth. A Little dusty. Finishes long and smooth with beautiful Fruit, lively Acidity and little Peppery Spiciness and even some Minerality. Amazing! Perfectly vital, complex and round.
A Revelation of a perfectly integrated wine with an amazing play of lively fruit and secondary characteristics, giving an example of what Bordeaux from a legendary vintage can do! Density, great structure and balance delivered with optimum proportions and refinement. Probably peaking now, but surely good for many years to come. See more at cellartv.wordpress.com

Light ruby, not perfect clarity. Wonderful mature nose of dill, light red fruit and real perfume. Medium weight. At once both soft and possessing a good acidic core. If I had to guess, significant percentage of Merlot in the cepage-certainly not a strict Pauillac type structure. Elegant, fully developed yet vigorous and gently ripe. No hint of heat or overripeness. What a treat.

Really impressive showing today at KB, must have been a fruit day. Nice dark red color and aromas. Beautiful scent of black truffle, black cherry and leather. The palate was singing and the majority of blind tasters thought this was a California Cabernet. Dark sweet middle core of spiced fruit with wonderful seamless texture and good long finish. Lots of spice and soft nuances. Very classy and drinking so nicely. Still seems this has real legs to last many more years.

Still a great wine, although the cork was not salvageable. I've found this problem consistently with older bordeaux, even though they've been properly stored and the tip of the cork was still moist. Any suggestions as to how to deal with this? I decanted through a fine screen so the wine was not really affected, but it doesn't exactly add to the experience to have the cork crumble into tiny bits as soon as the corkscrew hit it.

Two bottles, both still filled into neck. Double decanted 3:30 before drinking. A gorgeous assertive old bordeaux with fiery red color and a soft leather and smokey nose that still somehow smells like an early summer garden. Dried flowers; a great spine; and a long balanced finish of blue fruits, wet earth, and candied currants. A perfect hint of gasoline; very alive. Not necessarily fruit driven, it's got a gentle old world attack followed by a gorgeous round savory surge of herbal remedies and dried flowers; dried cherries; sauteed portobello. Beautiful dried cherry and cherry pit finish. An unintrusive dream pairing that in every way complemented simple skirt steak marinated with salt, pepper, and olive oil and served with romesco.

Tasted blind, thought it was a late 80's left bank bordeaux. Subtle slightly funky aromas with wet moss. On the palate earthy, mossy and fungi flavors. Almost no tannins remain. Finish lingers nicely. Drinking well now but would not hold for more than another couple years. Wine tasting @ WineSense.

Left open in the bottle for 5 hours. Medium ruby at the core and going rose at the edge. For me an unusual nose - not fruit driven but there is lots of earthy aromas - damp soil, definite cedar, liquirice and a very hint of cherry. Very smooth and silky on the palate. Refined and elegant - hardly any tannins but again not a lot of fruit but more savoury flavours. A really good older Bordeaux.

Great example of resolved but vibrant Bordeaux. Nose just scream Pauillac with intense scents of cedar, rosemary, and wet earth. I could sit and smell this wine all night. The palate follows the nose. Though there is plenty of structure and fruit left this wine is in a very good spot right now.

Wow, together with the 2003 easily the best Duhart I know. From a perfect bottle with a fill 2mm below the cork. Still dark color, some lighting on the rim. Open and expressive nose, graphite, currants leather, but no brett whatsoever (unlike other vintages). Only medium-bodied with extremely fine grained tannins. Almost first growth or super-second quality Lovely persistence and balance. From bottles such as this in no danger of declining anytime soon.

Softer performance (in a good way!) for this wine than some other bottles I have had. As usual masses of leather and smokey, dark fruits on the nose. Always been a slightly austere wine in my view and lacking a little fruit to make it truly outstanding but still a very high quality claret for the price.

Last time I tried one of these (12 months ago) it was pretty closed and not very pleasant. This time I decanted it for around an hour before drinking and it was much more open and pleasurable. Still very meaty and fleshy (rather than overtly fruity) which made me think this still has plenty of life ahead of it. Good dark colour in the glass and classic dense, meaty nose and palate but without any heat or overt alcohol. One of the best value 82s around if you can find it.

Merits its good reputation, classic Pauillac, classic 1982. Fully mature but still with time in hand.

Looking and tasting beautiful. This is not an opulent 82, but it is certainly very complicated, with an incredibly strong personality.

Brought to a tasting ..... 3rd wine of the flight ....
+ Color - not as evolved as one would think of a wine this age
+ Nose - earthy, leather, mushrooms, cacao, dried red fruit, licorice
+ Flavor - light, playful, inky, woody, still a bit dry here and there
+ Finish - slightly bitter, green, dry, slightly acidic
Perhaps I was expecting more of this bottle, but lucky it was at least ok.
The cork was pushed up, crumbled and smelled really funky.
At least the wine evolved in the decanter, and we all enjoyed it.
Mathijs

Refined and elegant - hardly any tannins but again not a lot of fruit but more savoury flavours. A really good older Bordeaux.
