Flowing, silky, creamy, seamless, effortless elegance, mild tannins, fresh and perfectly balanced, crushed red berries, lovely nutty evolution, just the right touch of nervosité, perhaps slightly short on the finish. A dreamy wine. At restaurant De Lage Vuursche, Lage Vuursche, NL.

Restrained but delicate nose of strawberries, wood, anise, forest floor and something undefinable but very pleasant and elegant. Elegant is the word to describe the palate also, slim and long. Tannins seem to be completely resolved. Would have wished a more expressive nose. I am uncertain whether this will evolve or should be drunk now (I chose the latter).

This was good - soft, floral, round-ish texture. Not there yet on the aged Burgundy ideal around texture / bottle sweetness ... but I'm not sure it'll get there. It was more 2007-ish than I expected. Not a detraction from this specific instance, but more a lowering the ceiling of what I think this will achieve. My guess is that for my palate, this is probably slightly past peak- it's past my young Burgundy ideal and I don't have confidence it will get to my older Burgundy ideal. But I have more, so I'll get to test that hypothesis.

Got a little concerned about the development of 2007 red Burgs, so elected to open this which was probably a little early, didn't offer a lot this time, some anise, leather and minerals on the nose, slim and good length, but seemed a bit hollow on the palate. Slighty disappointing. I wondered if it was already going downhill, but now some time afterwards, I think it was still not ready.

Medium ruby, clear. Tart cherry and soil. Light weight with a bit of glossiness. Very forthcoming and open for Angerville, and the acidity is relatively low for these wines. A touch of stone but not as prominent as it can be in Taillepieds. Very, very good and surprisingly resolved at this point.

Developing and well-integrated with very ripe, dark berry fruit and an initially gentle sweetness that broadened with air. Some nice mineral and subtle spice notes add interest. This was enjoyable but on the slight side with low-ish acidity; for my preferences it needs further time to develop additional breadth and texture. I found further pleasure when rich sous-bois notes turned up with several hours of air, but for me this needs another 3-5 years or so.

Consistent with previous note. It takes around one hour to open up. Compared to the clos des ducs 2007 I had lately, this wine is more accessible and elegant. The minerality and wild berries are so charming. Excellent volnay!

Angerville Lunch at La Paulée with Guillaume d'Angerville (Rebelle, New York): Magnum. Ruby. Smoky, earthy nose that resembles the 2014 version and is much less green than the '07 Champans. Slightly fuller than the Champans, lovely feel, slightly lower acidity than that wine, very stony finish, and excellent persistence. Wonderful length, balance, and clay covered fruit. This was gorgeous today.
Same btl as R&Rler. Not quite at the same level as my btl early last month at dinner prior to the America concert. Still an excellent 2007 but, that blt, last month rocked!

WTDS at Tilia: Rhones Among Others (3/2/17): Medium dark red color. Drank 1 glass over 75 minutes. This bottle was a little less expressive than one we had a couple weeks ago, though in the end it wasn't too far off. Red fruits, maybe less delineated, dried earth, leather, well integrated and elegant on the palate. Lingers nicely.

Brought this to Heirloom prior to the America concert and ...loved it! PnP into a Riedel Burg glass 10 minutes before dinking. Very elegant and not at all lean / austere like some Volnays can be. This is the first D'Angerville that has really lived up to the hype for me. Probably my fault though as I drank most of them too young. Note to self, sit on those 05s! This showed exceptional balance, depth and elegance. Mid weight at most but excellent concentration. Some more oaky reds showed up tonight and made it painfully obvious how well the oak was integrated here. Same btl as R&Ler. Great nose, great everything here! 92+/93-. Happy to have 2 more!

Dinner at Heirloom (Heirloom, St.Paul, MN): Medium fed color. PNP, drank 2 glasses over 90 minutes. Very nice nose that blossoms quite quickly in glass. Floral with dried cherries, leather and dried earthiness. The palate is ready to go too, nice purity to the pretty red fruits, rose petals, leather, mineral and earth. A soft and feminine Volnay. Lovely 92+pts.

Opened and poured this right to my glass. Follows a 2005 Cathiard Clos de L'Orme CM, which was pretty tight as expected. How is this 2007? For certain, more approachable, with more generous flavors and a touch of old world barnyard. What is impressive with just a few mins of aeration is the purity of the fruit, with an inflection of a soil tone and delicious acidity. Reminds me some of the best of Anderson Valley in Northern California, when red apple and dark raspberry both play together well. I'm excited to see how slow ox time works more magic here, as this is being served in about 4 hours. This seemed to not go over as well as I had expected. Served blind at dinner, and the Cathiard really outclassed it. A few guessed California and it surprised some when I revealed it. I enjoyed it more than the others and the Cathiard really made it a stark contrast.

Really appealing and open Taillepieds. Lovely black cherry, coffee grounds, and a little floral action on the nose, with a fresh, stony palate presence and just the faintest bit of grip on the finish. Certainly has the bones for another decade+ of aging, but this is arguably one of the most approachable D'Angervilles I've had in a long while. In a great spot.

starting to get to that point in the evening where it's all tasting the same. and good no doubt. found this superbly clean and minerally, which seemed to be the underlying 07 d'Angerville theme. bright cherry, lively, lovely. Young in my estimation.

Angerville Taillepieds Evening (San Francisco): Clear red, lighter than either the 2006 and 2012 next to it. Very pure light cherry aromas with just a touch of anise. Elegant, much more typical Volnay body than the '06. Crisply focused, very pretty, some anise for complexity, not a great deal of remaining tannin (nor much of the Taillepieds stoniness, for that matter). Pretty much a joy to drink now, but the acidity should carry it forward for some time. The most currently enjoyable and fully expressed of the 3 Taillepieds tasted tonight.

The cork was 85% covered in wine, including the top of the cork. I let this breathe up in the glass for three hours. The wine was sound. Lovely garnet dust color. Aromas of potpourri flowers, spice and sweat. Slick entry. This offers dried cherry, slate and sweet tarts. Lively acids. There is a lingering, tart calling card. No rush. 90

Decanted and consumed over about nine hours. Stony balanced red berry lean austere laser rocky mineral slatey juice. Reference Taillepieds -- yep. Sadistic, nervous, painful mineral -- yep. Nostalgic -- yep. Enjoyable and hedonistic -- Eh. This would pair well with gravel with a side of clotted blood. Great for what it is.
Highway to the D'Anger(ville) Zone (L'Apicio): Clean, ripe, gorgeous nose of of dark cherries and extremely prominent molten rock, with a minty herbal edge. Round and juicy but dense and sappy with that great Taillepieds molten undercurrent leading to a structured stony finish. Drinking beautifully now but with plenty of material to age, this is lovely and suffers only by comparison with the 05, which makes it seem a touch insubstantial.

Solid burgundy color. Sweaty, earthy aroma. Round entry with more body and depth than I expected for a 2007. Red fruit and loam. For an "off" vintage, the vineyard really shows through. Smooth mouth feel. Medium finish. I'll defer scoring until the next bottle.

Six 2007 Red Burgundy 1ers at the Magnum Society (Wellington, New Zealand): Light fairly primary ruby colour. An expressive, attractive spicy and savoury nose of red currant, red cherry and some flower perfume. On palate very good, ripe, generous fruit. Good depth and concentration, but lacy and pure. Well balanced with lovely texture. Detailed with dark berry fruit, mineral and some high pitched flavours. Drinking very well now but no immediate hurry.

Light, vibrant ruby in the glass. Fragrant on the nose, with a bit of secondary decay type notes. This was all primary fruit on the palate though. Really fantastic. Bright red, almost candied fruits and floral flavors. Delicate in nature while still retaining structure and intensity of flavor. A really good burgundy, and as you would expect, utterly different than its neighboring brothers and sisters from the north. There is no mistaking this for a Nuits St George or a Gevrey. Clearly demonstrates, at least to me, what burgundy is all about: fragrant, light and delicate with a distinctive sense of place, but with intense flavor and a clear structure and balance for long term improvement. Drinking well now, but this should have a long life ahead of it. This is benchmark Volnay to me.

Pinot noir blind tasting. Germany, Burgundy, Hungary. (Szeged, Hungary (at the"club")): Tasted blind. So much more class in the nose than any others in the row. Beautifully complex with a whole spice-bazaar, flowers, well defined, concentrated fruit. (The oak is so discreet and integrated, much-much smarter than the germans' excessive toastiness.) Medium body. Deep and captivating intensity of flavours. The fruit is just shining, but lots of other layers here as well. Deeper, denser midpalate yet fine silkiness in the texture, longly unfolding sip, really good length. So fluently, effortlessly elegant, impeccable balance. This is just a beauty with all the pinot-magic, easily towers this row. 93-94 points. 55 Euro, it absolutely worth it.

Opens a little simple but nice. After a tasting sip (left some air) and the trip to Jersey, it opened up, and continued to grow in the bottle over a course of a couple of hours. No, this is not a great vintage, but it is pretty darn nice. Another Y2K, sneaking in under the radar and drinking really well? This showed more structure than the Caillerets, side by side; I think I preferred this, the Taillepieds, but it's close at this point. Others preferred the Caillerets for the near term.

Glad I have a few bottles of this stashed away. There's so much more depth and character here than in the Volnay 1er bottling I opened not long ago, with the mineral, herbal, floral and other savoury dimensions here standing out a great deal more. There's amazing depth and balance here, flavour conveyed with a remarkable purity and lightness of touch and it's a thrilling wine though incredibly young.

Domaine d'Angerville 2007/2008 Taste-off (l'Artusi, NYC): Blood ruby. Nose incredibly like a young Barolo -- rosy, tarry, and dense. Primary, but a fine, pure, "silky" nose. There is also a deeeeep iron note, like being in an iron forgery surrounded by molten metal. The palate is simply incredible; silken and glorious. Fabulous. Cherry, cherry, cherry. Good weight with terrific length. Incredibly good. WOTF. (It is possible I got which wine was which in this flight wrong, but I don't think I did).

2007/2008 d'Angerville Tasting (L'Artusi Restaurant, West Village, Manhattan): Tasted semi-blind (we knew the vineyard was Taillepieds, but had the 07&08 D'Angerville along with this). Wine #9. Darker nose of coffee, mocha, blue-red fruits. Minerally and spicy - just beautiful. Really bright and delicious. Great balanced mouthfeel - a touch meaty. Good acid, stones - very pure, powerful and minerally. Great palate - really long and persistent finish. This and the Ducs really saved the 07's for me. Nose - 4.5/6, Palate - 5.5/6, Finish - 5.5/6, Je Ne Sais Quoi - 1.5/2 = 17/20.

Decanted 2 hours (benefited). Light violet-tinged garnet. As CT notes indicate this is expressive and open now because of its feminine character if a bit primary. Nose of red fruits, flowers and soil. Lively, penetrating red fruit of great length on palate, soft tannins and good dose mineral acidity. Has finesse. Low complexity at the moment, but the the purity of the fruit and the easy-going crunchy tension are delightful.

Best 2007 I've had to date? Wonderful for most of the evening; closes up and turns grumpy with a few hours of air. Lovely, floral, earthy, mineral nose. Great minerality and complexity on the finish. Only a slight hint at the mealy texture I've found in many 2007s. I'm very happy for the price I paid; would be happier if I had bought more.

Porchetta Dinner & Burgundy at Bryan's; 8/14/2011-8/15/2011: Bright nosed and very expressive, with ripe bing cherry and lilacs. Very fresh red fruit is vivid, with a silky tannin profile and acid that provides impressive lift. A wine that gives pleasure now but I'd imagine 10-15 years in the cellar will reward.

Irony, meaty and deep. Fully ripe with deep red and blue fruits, lots of minerals and wafts of violets. Presenting pretty tight, this was better on day two when it relaxed and showed a more overtly mineral / red fruits / flowers profile as opposed to the meaty irony persona on day one. Really good stuff but much more wound up and less giving than the Champans at the moment.

Opened up a couple of nights ago, and am just now finishing the last of it.
I am quite pleased with how open this wine is, leaving little to the imagination from the very get-go. The bouquet is inviting and full with notions of cool black cherries and wet soil. The black cherry and soil notions reappear on the palate with youthful vigor, supported by plenty of extract and drive. While I wouldn't describe it as feminine, it is indeed possesses an aura of stately elegance. Highly addicting to drink, and should age very handsomely.

Aromas of potpourri flowers, spice and sweat. Slick entry. This offers dried cherry, slate and sweet tarts. Lively acids. There is a lingering, tart calling card. No rush. 90

This is still young, finish is very long and elegant. There's a lot of acid still hiding the fruit. That being said, classic pure cherries, cranberries, dried herbs and spices. Hold if you have some left.

The black cherry and soil notions reappear on the palate with youthful vigor, supported by plenty of extract and drive. While I wouldn't describe it as feminine, it is indeed possesses an aura of stately elegance. Highly addicting to drink, and should age very handsomely.
