This is in a very nice place - mature, but vibrant, black fruits with just a touch of sweetness to them. Napa Cab through and through, but not overdone. Certainly won't win awards for elegance, but the stucture is there, even if it sometimes feels a bit one dimensional and with blurred edges. Very nice.

Color: deep garnet Nose: plum, earth, anise Taste: plum, cherry, raspberry, anise This is exactly how Cali cabs should age - now well integrated flavors with juicy red fruit, plum upfront and anise and cedar follow. Very smooth glycerin mouthfeel with a nice lingering finish. I have one more that I think can go a few more years.

Decanted for sediment, been almost seven years since last tasted, never been impressed according to three previous notes as I found this to be harsh and disjointed. This particular bottle was an exception, loads of dark plum, dark currants, cherry, very juicy with hints of olives. Not sure if it was the bottle or the extended bottle age but I’m not complaining.

A solid yet simple Cali Cab Sav. Cork broke in half as it’s been on its side for over 10 years. In a great place at age 14 years with slightly grippy tannins. Can likely age a few more years easily. But in a perfect spot for drinking. Nothing spectacular with little complexity but will pair well with anything.

Deep ruby color. Leather and blackberry on the nose. Dark fruit forward with good tannin structure that is well integrated. The leather comes back on the finish with a hint of astringency. Probably best to get drinking if you have some left!

Very beautiful ruby color. Rustic nose of cedar, foliage, mushroom. Introduction to the tongue is a delight. Light on the black berry fruit. Tannins are quite resolved which gives the wine great smoothness but still along with acid great structure. There is an interesting astringency around the tip and the edges of the tongue that may bother some tasters. Very mellow wine at the back of the palate. Very mellow aftertaste.

This aged quite nicely! Nice nose of sweet dark fruits. On the palate this was very good with fruits, oak and tannins nicely integrated. Initially slightly hot but this improves quickly. It has a hint of sweetness but it was less sweet and less powerful than 2004, and a very tasty wine overall. 90-91.

Deep red with purple highlights. Somewhat reticent nose of blackberry syrup, cedar and oak. Actually the nose was a little jammy which was not true on the palate; smooth, rich palate with blackberry, notes of stem, leather and a little spice, with minimal to moderate tannins, some acidity an average length. Agree with Outplaying that this had modern Bordeaux character. Paired well with, you guessed it, rib eye and enjoyed by guests. Not quite as good as the 2004, but loved the smooth, integrated nature of this wine. Drink now.

Very expressive nose of vanilla, dark fruits and cedar chest. Aroma jumped from the glass after a PnP. Full bodied with smooth mouthfeel and minimal tannins. Developed some nice secondary characteristics of leather but with nice fruit still remaining. Had finish been a little longer the score would have been even higher. This wine drank at twice it's price point. Easily could be $100 bottle of wine right now.

This was a very nice drinking Cab, with great fruit. Maybe lacking in Terrier complexity but, otherwise delicious. The notes already posted tell it all.

At its peak. Integrated tannins with dark fruit and good balance. Medium-Full bodied. Cassis, some black cherry, and cedar. A great example of a Napa Cab for under $50. Way under that in fact.

Ruby red with a dark red center. Strong aromas of dark rich cherries and oak. It was balanced, full bodied with medium tannins...on the palate, it was silky smooth and had a slightly sweet cherry flavor. The finish was clean and easy with flavors of leather and oak. The first tasting had strong menthol and tar aromas and was a a little bitter. Once I decanted it for about 30 mins, it fully opened up and the dark cherries and oak developed.

PNP, this bottle had a bit of heat, as well as some austerity, on the plus side there was some plum, currants, and hints of chocolate. Overall decent but nothing special!

Did a vertical tasting of 2002-2008. 2004 was definitely the best followed by 2002 which was supposed to be past its' drinking window. 2003 brought up the rear, as it was a bad year for Napa Cabernets. The others were very similar, yet also quite different.

CES Lab Wine Tasting #9 (Home): Very fruit forward nose. Smooth and easy to drink, with tannins well integrated. I wouldn't say this is a wine to age; rather, it's an easy drinker with the fruit up front while not being over the top.

Ruby red with a deep red center. Strong aromas of black fruit, blueberries and plums. Full bodied with medium tannins, balanced and silky smooth on the palate. It had a long finish with suddle flavors of leather & oak. It definitely is at is prime or a little past. My previous bottle was a little flat.

Inviting nose, with soft, silkly mouth feel coupled with subtle fruit, very light tannins and a thin, abreviated finish. A very nice wine but perhaps not in a style I enjoy most.

Decanted for 90 min and served at 60 deg. Overall impression is... MEH. This wine is nice on the initial attack with plenty of cherry and black cherry on a medium weight frame. However, the midpalate transition is a bit awkward, and the finish is were this wine really falls down. The finish is astringent and somewhat bitter, with drying tannins. Overall, disappointing and not nearly as good as the '04. This was my only bottle. If I had more, I'd probably be inclined to wait a while in the hope that the finish would smooth out, but I doubt that it would.

This bottle seemed to really get it right. It was ruby red with a deep red center. The strong aromas of black fruit and blueberries were balanced with oak and leather. Full bodied, silky smooth and a wonderfully complex and long after taste. One of the best Cab's that I have had.

One of the first times I completely agree with the ratings from Spectator. Nice and fruit-forward new world style cab. Juicy and ripe right up front. Nothing spectacular, but a very nice wine for a mid-week drink. Great value if you can find it for ~$25. Drink up, probably at peak or on the edge of decline. I'll drink my last bottle very soon.

Drank at a dinner party, big cal cab in new world style, fruit forward black cherry, currant, and blackberries, just short of a fruit bomb with balanced and integrated tanins. Missing a few individual notes, and not a complex wint. Time is now as I would not let this cellar for a long time.

Dark garnet color, good nose , with significant ripe juicy fruit, dark berries, a hint of oak/wood . Decent intensity and concentration and sweet on the palate (very good for the price – that’s what I like about Turnbull Estate Cabs in general. I don’t like their higher end Leopoldina & Fortuna 06 Wines). A very good Cab. Very Good to Excellent (85-89)

Pop 'n pour - consumed over 2 hours with short ribs and mashed potatoes. This is unabashedly new world with big, ripe juicy fruit being the dominant characteristic. Nose and palate loaded with blackberry and currant. I'd go with jammy rather syrupy forthe mouthfeel. Good depth and concentration throughout the palate. This strays a bit from the typical Cabernet flavor profile -- probably due to the fact that this producer is known to blend Syrah in this bottling. This is not my favorite style of wine, but it worked for me on this night due to the fact that there are no vanilla or woody oak flavors apparent -- big plus for my palate.

Being a big fan of Turnbull it was with great anticipation when I picked this for our Friday night wine. Popped and poured; dark garnet, medium bodied wine; nose of dark fruits; lots of black and red fruits on the palate - but this is way too sweet!! It reminded me of a Zin! Otherwise the alcohol was in check, nice fine grained tannins, and a medium finish. I'm not sure if this got cooked at the wine store or what. Anyways, it wasn't bad, just not what I was expecting from this bottle.

WLTV Napa Cabs (valley) (Eastside Wine Storage): nose: blackberry and sugared dates palate: this was the heaviest of the cabs, with the thickest mouthfeel, and also the sweetest palate. Not necessarily too sweet, and certainly not goopy, I rather liked the vanilla fruit, though it was not particularly complex. this was tasted at cellar temperature and I suspect at higher temps the alcohol would overshadow the palate. Fortunately, that was not the case tonight. The nose opened up considerably over the 2 hours it was open. Tannins were full integrated. THis was in a good place for drinking right now with some air.

What a beautifully balanced wine! It poured dark garnet ... just a shade lighter than a petite. On the nose and palate was dark fruit, cassis, a hint of vanilla, and white pepper. I had it with a grilled rib-eye and she had basil and sun dried tomato pasta. We both thought it a wonderful match. This was REALLY GOOD!!

Sweet! Seriously, this comes of with slightly over the top sweet, jammy dark fruits. There is some cedar and cassis in the background with a little tannin but overall, the rich, sweet fruit dominates. Might work with some bbq ( think zin). A big wine and a little too much for me.

Popped and poured. Dark crimson color. Sweet black fruit, oak and alcohol on the nose. Extremely sweet stewed fruits on the palate with a long, sugary finish. No tannins, no grip, no finish. Not what I expected.

Long decant (4 hours before 1st taste): dark ruby color. nose bright dark fruit. Taste chewy dark cherry very nicely balanced with acidity and firm tannins. As others have said, drinking wonderfully now but as balance has improved overnight and the tannins remain firm, I think I'll go back for more to see if they may improve still with cellaring.

Drank at dinner last week. This is showing extremely well, having evolved nicely since my first bottle 1.5+ years ago. It's the '06, just with more spice and some cedar. Great QPR for ~$35 in wine shops (less so at $90 in the restaurant).

This is a soft, very smooth Cab; very easy to drink. On the other hand there is not a lot of nuance or complexity of nose or flavor. The longer the bottle is open the less interesting it became. This is consistent with some others, bowmanbc, Brsed, Tigerpaw, CounselorEp, and johnchris9, and not aligned with several others.

awesome. Really enjoyed. Improved considerably from my last two bottles. It was the favorite of the night by most and was up against an Amon Ra and a Donnhoff kabinet. This time the taste matched the nose. I opened the bottle about 2 1/2 hours before arriving at the restaurant. Enjoy!

I really liked their 04's but this one is very different. Much more structure and very tight on opening. Definitely needed the decanting. Once opened, it was a structured napa valley cab, very different from the Jordan that was opened at the same time. More complex than the Jordan and less ripe, lush and soft. Higher levels of acidity also. I preferred this wine more and more as the night progressed.

What I would describe as the perfect restaurant Cabernet. Perfectly fine, if not complex. Sweet fruit and round oak. A little chocolate. This was a gift -- my wife and mother-in-law thought it was really good. If retails for $35-40, well, I'd have a hard time pulling the trigger. Again, there was nothing wrong with this and I'm perfectly happy to drink it if someone else is buying. For the W and MIL, I think I'll pick up a few bottles of Amancaya at half the price and put the rest towards something a little more up my alley. Hope that doesn't sound too selfish, but I just don't think it matters that much to them. This is the hard part of wine buying/drinking, when the tastes of constant tablemates differ from mine. On the flip side, 20-25% of what I own is German Riesling, mostly Mosel but with some Pfalz as well, mostly Spatlese, but some with less ripeness. Except for the Kabinett Halbtrocken, my wife doesn't care for it. Still working on striking the right balance.

Inky purple color and nose of violets. After decanting, big, dark, cassis-flavored fruit on the palate restrained by dark cocoa and tobacco flavored tannins coating the mouth and holding for a long finish. Intense yet balanced. A beautiful food wine.

Lovely fresh nose of violets, red fruits with currants, cassis, and a little chocolate. Fine chalky tannins on the palate, with fresh red fruits, quite pire and focused, with good acidity. Lenthy vanilla and chocolate finish, but refined and in balance with the fruit. Great balanced and tasty Napa that delivers. Drinking great now.

Still very impressive at this point. Consistent with Prior notes. Lots of good Black Cherry and Dusty Cocoa fruit. YOU have to Wait a little!! Decant it, or Glass Decant and let it sit. 1-2 hours does wonders for this bottle!!! It provides so much for this price point, its just a SICK value. If you have not tried, then pull the trigger and compare against some $50-75.00 bottles and see for yourself. This is a winery to support as they do it the right way for fare price. Oakville appellation at it's best!

Dark in color, expressive on the nose, and falls short on the palate. I opened with a PNP and enjoyed the nose, getting loads of Cab expressive notes. The taste just fell short and offered some bitterness on the back palate after 30 seconds. I see this still has a long way to go, so I'll hold onto my other bottles a few years and give them a chance to fully show themselves.

This was the last of 4 bottles and was stellar. Bottles 2 and 3 were not as good. I continue to detect that the same wine often changes from bottle to bottle. I've read that it is my taste mechanizm (palate) that changes, but I'm not convinced. Opened it with the thought of just "finishing them off", but hate to see this go now.

Consistent with Prior in some ways, but a real noticable Cherry Cola/Dr. Pepper character with strong Oak upon first pour. This blew off over 30 min, and brother this bottle just started to sing. This is a highly under-rated producer in Napa country where every winery seems to think $50/btl is fair price. The mouthfeel is silky, and the black cherry and red berry flavors are pesistent. Fine tannins that totally enhance the experience. BRAVO!!

Ripe and fruit driven with blackberry and currant notes. There are some secondary layers to add depth. Though not simple, this wine would be easy to guzzle, so beware. I would buy again at a good auction price.

Not the most complex or persistent bottle of juice out there but the gorgeous aromas of jam, earth and flowers followed by beautifully pure yet supple red and black cherry, red raspberry flavors that have made this one of my favorites over the past two vintages. The oak and fine tannins are there but absorbed by the pure wild fruit component. Perhaps a little Luden cherry drop-like but not fakey.

Overall a nice bottle of wine. Crushed berries on the nose and I also picked up a dusty herbal scent as well. Excellent fruit on the palate with a "sweet red fruit" component that I tend to pick up on all turnbull offerings (I love it). That said, this wine was not quite as impressive as previous vintages. A bit of heat that started to come through as the temperature increased throughout the night. I think this wine will improve with some bottle age. A long finish as well...

Friend joined a dinner with half bottle he opened the night before. As I had just drank a 2004 the night before, I was curious about the differences. Right away, I was hit but the Dill/Herb I smelled, in concert with typical Cherry, Berry, fruit contingent with cocoa overtones. Overall, I would call this another solid Turnbull bottle, just a little more of a green flavor profile than the 2004. The Juicy jam flavors of the 2004, were still there in the 2005, but less intense. Glad I have two bottles of my own to hit up later.

inky color, long highly colored legs. viscous, with plenty of oak and cassis on the nose. mucho oak on the palate, but mostly contained by the dense layers of cassis, and other dark fruit flavors. Not much pleasurable green here, with enough acidity and smooth tannin to hold it all together. I'll enjoy this more in a year or two, and hope the oak will be less dominant then. GOOD - VGOOD

Cola and layered mocha with fine, silky chocolate sauce. After 3 hours, the bottle really opened to its prime. I drank an '05 earlier in the year, and just after 6 months of aging, it made a big difference. One of the finest, consistent CA cabs for price.

Man in the boat overboat. I am so bummed. I had a bottle in Chicago last month that I would have rated a 90. We enjoyed with steak and allowed the bottle to decant for 2 hours. This dark juice was filled with hints pepper and vanilla with a solid finish. Either this bottle was flawed or bottle variation is alive and well. It tasted like a 15-20 cab. I have 8 bottles left that I got on sale for 29.............mmm I will report back or could this be past its prime and the fruit is MIA.

Decanted 2 hours. Dark purple color with a nose of ripe, dark fruit with a little oak and sweet candy. On the palate i found this wine to be very candyesque. After drinking over a couple of hours this was less noticeable but it was still a little sweet for my taste. Maybe it didn't pair well with the prime rib and roasted vegetables i had for dinner. Nice mouthfeel with good intensity and a nice finish. This seems to be a decent wine if you like this style but i guess i am not on board with this. Somewhat one dimensional and lacking in structure. I think the same style can be found for a lot less than $40.

Inky purple, with long legs. Graphite/lead pencil, cassis, cedar. Turns to blackberry, tobacco, tar and oak. Tannins are round and supple, but still grip. A lasting finish that satisfies the palate. Really good QPR as it is hard to find fantastic Napa Cab in the sub-$40 price range.

Nose of cassis, currants, and a candied fruit note. Palate is smooth and lush, with chewy tannins. Had a very ripe fruit profile, with obvious cassis and vanilla. nice lengthy finish of mocha, stone and cedar. Still a little disjointed but balanced, with the oak influence standing out, but I think this will integrate well and be a solid drinker in the medium term. Enjoyable as a pop and pour at a wine bar, and with a good decant may be singing now.

Poured for us at the winery. Nose - damp earth, dust, cassis, and a touch of chocolate. Mouth - ripe rich juicy blackberry and cassis. Ooh, just delicious. With considerable tannins. I'm not sure what will become of this over the next 5-10 years. It drinks deliciously now and if it improves in the bottle it should be kick ass. This turned out to be my favorite cab of the day's tastings in Napa, beating out others listing at double the price.

This is the first bottle of four of this wine in our cellar that we opened. We plan to wait at least a year for the second bottle. Having said that, we decanted for about an hour an a half, so the wine had really opened up at the first sip - paired with a grilled filet mignon (in a cocoa spice rub) and bearnaise. The color was deep red brick (4 of 5 points). The intensity earned 29 of 35 points with a lush, powerful flavors. Balance earned 4 of 5 points and finish also 4 of five points. Adding to a base of 50 points, the wine earned a 91 in our book. I can't wait to see what this wine tastes like in the years to come.

A lively medium to full bodied cab, slightly fruit forward with good balance through a fairly lasting finish. Flavors: Typical blackberry and plum on the front with hints of sweetness maybe cherry, the midpalate has a light earthiness or woody texture with hints of vanilla, tannins noticeable on the finish will smooth well with time, Finish has some legs with dark chocolate and licorice notes. Nice cab for price point will age well. Low 90s.

This is very tight right now. Very strong dark fruit with decent acidity (for california), and fairly strong tannins. I've had this bottle open for about 5 nights (in the fridge) and it still shows tremendous fruit with a slightly herbal streak that does not detract from the wine. Well done.

Tasted unblinded at the Vintage Wines, Ltd. wine bar. Bright disc. Opaque purple robe with violet rim. Clean nose, showing strong primary aromas of black currants, vanilla and cola. Full-bodied on the palate, with low acidity, big ripe tannins and black-fruit and oak-domited flavors. Long, fairly smooth finish. Drink 1/10-1/17. I suspect that this wine is a (non-wine geek) crowd pleaser. Drink up if this is the case. Otherwise, drink 1/10-12/15.

Side by side tasting of the 2005 Turnbull Cab and the 2005 Caymus Cab show some similarities. Both cabs were big, bold, and rich with exploding dark fruit characteristics and firm tannin. Long lingering flavorful finish was the distinguishing characteristic of the Caymus. Turnbull cab has a medium finish but at almost half the price.

tasted this at winery, day 3 of trip, tasted lots of 05 Cabs. I noticed in some 05's like this one, a smaller percentage of Cab Sauvignon was used than prior years. This one having 83% Cab Sauv, 7% Cab Franc, 5% Syrah, 4% Merlot, 1% Petit Verdot. No Decanting, new bottle opened, aired glass 10 minutes. Nice nose of cassis, plums, cherries, anise, cocoa with a nice amount of oak influence. Medium to fullbodied, this wine really is smooth, tannins are moderate, but quite a bit softer compared to the 04 which I tasted along side. Fruit is a little tight at this stage, but seems typical for the 05's I tried. Blackberry, currant, plums, cherry, anise, allspice, chocolate on the palate with a medium-long finish. I think this will be as good as the 01 or 02, might age better too.

This is in a very nice place - mature, but vibrant, black fruits with just a touch of sweetness to them. Napa Cab through and through, but not overdone. Certainly won't win awards for elegance, but the stucture is there, even if it sometimes feels a bit one dimensional and with blurred edges. Very nice.

This is exactly how Cali cabs should age - now well integrated flavors with juicy red fruit, plum upfront and anise and cedar follow.

Did a vertical tasting of 2002-2008. 2004 was definitely the best followed by 2002 which was supposed to be past its' drinking window. 2003 brought up the rear, as it was a bad year for Napa Cabernets. The others were very similar, yet also quite different.

WLTV Napa Cabs (valley) (Eastside Wine Storage): nose: blackberry and sugared dates
palate: this was the heaviest of the cabs, with the thickest mouthfeel, and also the sweetest palate.

If you have not tried, then pull the trigger and compare against some $50-75.00 bottles and see for yourself. This is a winery to support as they do it the right way for fare price.

Otherwise, drink 1/10-12/15.

tasted this at winery, day 3 of trip, tasted lots of 05 Cabs.
