Blossom, lemon, orange peel, clementine, pineapple, coconut, cedar, white chocolate. Acidity medium(+). Finish long. It kept improving throughout the evening. Beautiful blend (Marsanne and Roussanne) from the Northern Rhône.

Tasting evening with Bas & Lennart (Utrecht, NL): What a great wine, amazing how they’ve managed to make this beautiful Hermitage Blanc in what is considered to be a very difficult Northern Rhone year. Straw yellow, medium intensity on the nose with orange peel, lemon zest, honey, tangerine, toast, smoke, blossom, elegantly integrated oak. Medium+ acidity, medium+ flavor intensity comparable with the nose but on the palate also white chocolate. Very long finish. 93-94
[Edit] on day 3 there is a great floral note added with roses, white and yellow flower, almost Condrieu like!

My second bottle. Both have been off, unfortunately. This one shows mature colors: burnished good, slightly rich texture. The nose is interesting, with yellow gooseberries and marmalade. But you get oxidized notes on the nose too, and on the palate the wine seems flat and tired. I wonder if it was damaged in shipping?

Bright straw. Big, bright nose of beeswax, marzipan, and floral oil. Oxidative in the way midlife Rhône can be. Ripe acidity. A finish that doesn't quit. This will age positively for many more years. (Bottle number 10485)

Dinner at Brian's (Moonbeam View): A wine of realy quality, but this was a bit of a dissapointing showing given how much I liked the last bottle we had a few years back. This one seemed to be in a rather sleepy state. The nose was still very alluring, with complex nuanes of sweet beeswax, spice and perfumed florals along with peach and melon, a bit of melted butter, and just that little lining of minerally aromas. Nice stuff. The palate did not quite have that effortlessly balance I remembered from the last bottle. This came across more buttery and creamy and soft. Still nicely balanced, but noticeably a heavy wine, especically when drank alongside the two d'Auvenay Burgundies. It had beautiful whtie Rhone flavours though - beeswax, spice, a lovely minerality, with some exotic tropical shades coming up with time, and then little nutty accents. There was just a little warmth at the end, where a long, long finish set in with curls of mineral and citrussy notes pulling alongside a broad, white fruited base. Lovely stuff, but it felt just a bit sleepy and grumpy compared to the last bottle - I would put this aside for another 5-10 years at least.

Weekly tasting group RWP #254: Special wines (@ DJ): Complex bouquet with ripe white fruits like pear and apple, honey and some nuts. On the palate a slightly reductive (positive) start, ripe yellow fruits, apple, marzipan, mild acidity. Overall a firm, concentrated, round and complex wine. A real beauty! Ready now and for several years to come.

Big, waxy, tropical-fruited nose with a huge whiff of marzipan and some fresh lemon. Ripe and unctuous on the palate with some minerality on the finish, but not the greatest poise, as the alcohol poked through a bit. Certainly enjoyable in its broad-shouldered, expressive way, but a bit overwhelming and best enjoyed in small doses.

15 vintages of Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage, Rouge and Blanc (E&R Wine Shop, Portland OR): Sweet and fairly lovely aromas. Elegant, showing some rich, creamy lemon note. Quite on initial palate entry, showing soft, elegant texture. Really beautiful purity on the palate, here. There is no overwhelming dial up of flavor or complexity, but what is there is entirely elegant and integrated. Quite a confident wine. The finish is really lovely, offering similar integrated balance and fantastic structure for a white wine. Lovely, lovely depth and elegance. This is currently drinking in a really beautiful, pure place.

A business dinner (Wijnkoperij Okhuysen, Haarlem, NL): According to Dutch importer Xavier Kat, this was still oxidative and closed only six months ago. Tonight is was really singing. Open and expressive but stylish and refined, silky and harmonious, with the beautiful freshness of the cooler 2008 vintage, wonderfully fresh and floral, good weight, rich but with a firm mineral core, heather honey on the finish, oak just peeping over the parapet, very good length.

Magnum night in the CLE (The Penthouse at IMG Headquarters in Downtown Cleveland): What a great contrast to the Rhys. Deeper gold in color. I was concerned serving a Mag of this at age 8 might be shut down , but this was in a great place. Its hard to ever judge the life cycles of these wines, but I am not sure it is ever better but maybe different. The nose has a bit of almonds which some took as oxidized. I think that is more the nature of this wine. Also plenty of fruit. Some citrus, bits of ginger and even a hint of bitters. On the palate, this has layers of complexity. Slightly nutty with canned peaches yet good acidity. Its a roller coaster of a wine although it may not get to the heights of some other vintages. A real treat and in a different way, worked quite well with some of the food.

HDH auction tasting at Tru; 5/15/2015-5/16/2015 (Chicago, IL): You can almost smell the wax on the nose, along with a light bit of lemon and some stewed apples. The palate has a waxy texture, showing some light lemon flavours and a small floral component. Relatively high in acidity (at least for a Rhone white -- which basically means that it's detectable). Not bad in the context of what these wines generally are, but really not my thing.

Pale bright yellow. The most remarkable quality of this wine was that it totally complemented the fish dish (yellow perch) without asserting its own flavours. The combination was seamless. Wines of Strength and Elegance - Kelvin and Marlene's Combined Birthday Dinner (Absinthe, Bukit Pasoh): Absolutely wonderful. This was yet another beautiful wine. Not quite as profound as the 2004 we had sometime back, which still remains the benchmark white Hermitage for me, but the coolness on the vintage that helped to lift the 2004 was very much present in this bottle as well. This had a crazy nose, full of slatey minerality, white flowers, beeswax and honeyed pears. With time, a little hint of apricots emerged, adding sweeter aromas to the edges of the bouquet. The palate was equally delicious. Incredibly integrated, it opened with a crunch of honeyed pear, a hint of apricots and some accacia and honeysuckle accents melding into a midpalate with rich creamy almond and lemon curd flavours. Lots of weight, but it was perfectly balanced, pulling away into a wonderfully dry, absolutely minerally back-palate and a haunting finish that lingered away with little wafts of honey, white flowers and stone fruit. A beautiful wine that went ever so well with a grilled prawns in a rich pine nut sauce. Good now, but this is really still a baby. It has the structure to age for a long, long time yet.

Chave's portfolio tasting: This is a brilliant Hermitage Blanc from Chave and the Hermitage Rouge is overwhelming by it. Lovely aromatic profile with layer and layer of almond, honey suckle, lemon, pear, mineral, crush stone all wrapped in a absolutely complex, polished, creamy package. Superb rich and concentrated yet with lively acid backbone to support. Wonderful balance with great focus and precision. Oily texture that gently coated the mouth with rich yellow fruits. When its move on to the finished, it turned a bit dry like a sherry which loaded with mineral, sea shell, sea breeze as well as bitter orange peel aftertaste. This is insanely good, delicious with endless finish. 93-94+

Domaine J.-L. Chave Cellar Visit, Tasting and Lunch (Hermitage): Tasted the two components that will make us most/all of the final Hermitage blend. First was incredibly alluring and floral, which will certainly provide lots of charm. Second was linear and powerful with lots of energy, and will provide the density and concentration for longevity. The underlying superb quality of these two components makes me expect this to be an excellent vintage for Chave Hermitage Blanc.

Beautiful wine with great balance. Fragrant and floral nose. Mineral, apple, white peach. Should have years of life ahead, but fantastic now. Heirloom cafe tasting Chave tasting
