Something of a vegetative nose. Pleasingly light hit of fruit—cassis, plum—on introduction. Interesting mid-palate—something like a slatey minerality—that disappears pretty quickly. Vegetative notes then pop up and just as quickly disappear. Tannins are completely resolved yields a smooth, easy to drink wine. An OK wine, but not a particularly memorable one.
good deepish color just starting to show some age, on the nose slightly aged cassis with quite a lot of pepper to it- some of the more bell pepper nature owing to the vintage but mostly arising from the oak, on the palate a good mid-weight Lynch Bages fruit though somewhat monolithic, cassis, cherries, dark spices, average length with the oak showing raw on the tail end, this is ready to go and best suited to a hearty steak with a strong sauce or a cheese course, the general stylistic changes in many Bordeaux chateaux over the past 20+ years can be quite heavily felt at this address and while this has bit more generosity to it than the 1993 (which is quite similar- but not quite as ripe) it falls short of the mid-weight 80s vintages that precede it. **+, will hold, but ready to drink.
Lynch Bages dinner at RPM Steak (Chicago, IL): On the heels of one tough vintage (1993) is this one. There's a lovely perfumed red fruit and very light quality about the nose, but the palate is thin, mean, and green. Even less stuffing than the 1993, and although there's a pretty little bit of not-quite-ripe red fruit, this is all-in-all a relatively unconvincing bottle of Lynch.
Double decanted and drank over the course of a couple hours alongside a '79. No specific notes taken, but the table consensus was the '79 was showing much much better than the '94. The '94 was thin, a bit flat and out of balance. Glad to read that other people have had better bottles of this.
