Ouff...dommage, un autre vieille bouette qui est bue 10 ans trop tard! Du jus de feuille et de champignons avec un arrière gout de terre...prévisible. Mince et aqueux en finale...on passe!

From Art's cellar. Birthday dinner for a younger colleague's wife who was born in 1984. She wanted a Bordeaux from that year. That vintage's reputation made me wary of bringing this bottle, but I need not have been. According to RMP, the wine is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. Decanted for about 1 hour. On initial opening, some Bordeaux-funk, which was gone by the time the wine was drunk. Wine was clear; no sediment to speak of. Very little bricking on the rim; otherwise garnet from the bowl outwards. Nose was cedar over black currants, and in the mouth, similar, but there were fines herbs accompanying the cedar. A few tannins still clung to life and the wine was well-balanced. The wine's herbaceousness was more reminiscent of a 1970's-era Mayacamus than a Pauillac. Long finish. This bottle would easily have lasted another 4 or 5 years. Stunning result from this iffy vintage!

Lynch Bages tasting (12 different vintages) at the Rheingau Gourmet Festival 2012: rubin red color; started very restrained with literally no bouquet, after a while a classic Claret nose; slightly acidic on the palate; light/medium body; round texture.
If you encounter wines like this one you can get the impression the 1984 Bordeaux vintage ain't that bad.
Vintages flight I: 1975 - 1978 - 1981 - 1984
