A spicy, red fruit nose. A bit grumpy to start, but unfurled over the course of a couple hours. Not amazing, but very nice. Purchased at Caves Madeleine (Beaune) in 2012.

This was not up what could be expected of this bottle, I got this at an auction and I guess this bottle was not properly stored. The nose was very developed, basically only tertiary aroma’s; on the first day mainly forest floor, leather, dried cherries. On day 2 more licorice, pipe tobacco and some red fruit. Medium acidity, low tannins, medium finish

Dark translucent ruby color. Fresh nose of intense red and dark berry, heady violets, iodine, and sea air. Layers of buoyant iron-inflected dark berry fruit cut with black cherry, fine soil, and anchoring stone on the palate. Crystal clear detail and disarming freshness, with surprising depth and concentration. Bright acidity and filed off tannin. Long finish of almost crunchy red fruit, subtle iron, briar, and granular dirt. We’ve been fortunate enough to sample this wine 6 times, this latest showing the best yet. An absolute delight.

Not in a braggadocios way, but somehow I’ve drunk an awful lot of this vintage and Cru from Lafon. And while not destined to be “great,” I’d be hard pressed to name a wine that’s provided more joy. And I could list a bunch of reasons you should buy this wine if it pops up, but really, I’d prefer you forget this benediction and leave the consumption to me.

The 2007 rendition begins a bit closed but within 30 mins opens nicely. Deeply pitched dark fruits, leather, mushroom and earth and tea. Maybe a little simple and thin compared to other vintages, not a surprise I suppose, but completely in its wheelhouse and enjoyable as ever.
