A sound bottle and solid example of 1995, but alongside a singing ‘71 DRC Grands Echezeaux so comparatively a little quiet. Lots of dark fruit, nothing muddled or unduly stewed but a darker, tighter, leaner wine. Adds great spice, stems, and florals the longer it’s in the glass. I think this could easily be decanted. Maybe a little singular or wanting in complexity or flashiness, but again, tough comparison. Would like to revisit this in isolation. 94-

A funny, surly nose but expanding so nicely on the palate - detailed blue and black berries, a little exotic spice, an appealing mineral component. Fine, broad, soft and with excellent depth. I quite liked this, though a little green emerged with time and that was less welcome.

This was really good and vying for wine of the day honours. There was a wealth of red fruits here both on the nose and in the mouth. There were gorgeous florals. It was rich and a strap of licorice weaved through the flavour profile. The finish was expansive and had precision and tang.

Almost exactly 1 year after my last tasting. This time, a 3 hr decant. The extra air time let this wine integrate into the harmonious whole that appeared only toward the end of the last bottle. This is nowhere near falling apart. Safely 2 decades ahead of it. Right now it takes a little coaxing and expertise to get both the massive primary notes of black cherry aligned with the very beginnings of tertiary - a little rare roast beef, some umami, a little tobacco. In between there is gorgeous singed stalkiness, pain d’epices, violet, you name it. It’s not terroir any more: it comes across as the Platonic ideal of Burgundy. No one element dominates, and the genius of the house style is to make it seem like they did... nothing at all. Less pyrotechnic than the last time, more integrated and definitive this time. What Burg was always meant to be. Wow. Score: 96. Relative to expectations: ++ because at these prices, I am going to be unreasonably picky.

(Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée St. Vivant) Medium cherry color with sediment and pale meniscus; gorgeous raspberry and tart cherry nose; tasty, tart cherry, raspberry, spice palate with depth and good acidity; long finish

From magnum. Good showing for vintage often lacking charm with rough edges on palate softened. Dried floral aromatics, albeit not exuberantly so.
