A very Bordeaux-like blend. Aromas of blackcurrant and wild berries with a hint of smoke/toast and tobacco in the background. Fruity and fresh considering the age, with a smooth well rounded tannins. An amazing wine from this estate. should be able to held this plateau for the next 10 years.
Mid-shoulder fill. Cork removed in two large pieces. Decanted and served. Clear deep dark garnet color. Magnificent bouquet of black currants, blackberries, black cherries and their respective liqueurs; forest floor, anise and fennel. Similar on the palate, full body, supremely balanced, with majestic purity and elegance. At least as good as a previous tasting six years ago. A fellow taster noted some green bell pepper after an hour and asked if the wine contained some cabernet franc. I found the level of ripeness (and everything else) to be essentially perfect. All this wine needed was a longer decant. It became more vigorous and expressive after an hour in the decanter; and the last sip, which arrived far too soon, was the best.
This is simply fabulous juice! My bottles were bought on release and have been well-stored since. Medium deep color with no bricking. This is great right from the get-go. Hard for me to describe the flavors. This is a gorgeous bordeaux-like cali cab. Every note attached to a 93+ score rings somewhat true. Lush, dk red fruit, leather, some iron, juicy acidity. Utterly enjoyable from first whiff right through the long finish. (94-95)
1990-themed dinner (The American Club): Next up was an interesting pair, served blind. This nosed like a classic Bord-blend - spice/sandalwood, leafy capsicum, graphite. On the palate, almost all of us ruled out '90 Bord as it was quite light/thin, although it still had that plummy, earthly secondary notes, plus the typical inky, leathery tones of mature Bord... Unfortunately, none came close to getting this right when it was unveiled to be a Dominus! I can't recall Dominus to be this light, though all I've had were all younger than this '90...
