  • Tasted double blind from a small capped bottle as part of a zoom tasting. The nose is less assertive than yellow (95 Haut Bailly). But seems similar. With some air this blossoms: still older and gentle but it spreads its wings and widens. A nice nutty complexity with breed. Nice gentle tobacco like a landscape. A little medium hue fruit. But more abstract. Nutty and a little volatile but very pretty - nutty and tobacco. With hints of fruit. Very very pretty and restrained. Finish is long and elegant. Nose - 5/6, Palate - 5.5/6, Finish - 4.5-5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1-1.5/2 = 16-17/20.

I figured BDX on these (and the 88 Rauzan-Segla.) Saw some scorch in each and thought they were both Graves. Guessed they were two vintages of the same wine with the other being younger Guess this to be 1983 Domaine de Chevalier (and the 88 Rauzan-Segla to be the 1995 Domaine de Chevalier.)

  • Green. Nonenough fruit. Not good.

  • Fully mature, fading fruit, lots of tertiary notes, a hint of meat, perhaps close to being over-developed? Drink soon.

  • Ten Vintages Haut Bailly vs Mission HB: Preamble: All wines tasted blind in 10 vintage flights (1994-2015). To every flight one random third wine from Pessac Leognan added (2x Haut Brion, 2x Smith, 2x Pape Clement, 1x Branon, 1x Luchy Halde, 1x Carmes, 1x Chevalier). All wines opened a few hours before consumption but no decanting.

    Some findings:
    1) Haut Bailly outperformed Mission (5 vs 4 wins, 92.5 vs 90.5 average). 2) Haut Bailly is a rather structured wine which seems to shine bright in ripe and warm vintages, without any form of excess ripeness or extraction. 3) When done right (05/15), Mission eclipses Haut Bailly with its depth and delineation , but several vintages showed a bit too ripe but especially with the alcohol not well masked (09/10). 4) Pessac wines usually need quite some air to open up. In this setting (no decanting), most wines needed a lot of swirling to fully open up and will need more cellar time. 5) The best wines today were Haut Bailly 09 (96pts) & 10 (95pts) and Mission 05 & 15 (95pts).

TN: Quite intense, slightly funky nose with some green notes, stems, green bell pepper. Quite round but not fully harmonious, missing a bit of fruit. The palate shows green bell pepper, dark berries, crushed rocks, some ashy notes. A bit more interesting and balanced. The substance is there but the structure remains quite angular with an elevated, not very well integrated acidity. Medium length. This needs more time to mellow further.

Decanting: I would go for two hours in the decanter.

  • A very good and classic showing of Haut Bailly again. Not a ton of fruit left, although an amazing sweetness seemed to pop and balance after 1-2 hours of bottle air. Great secondary and tertiary notes already but still alive and kicking.
