Community Tasting Notes (average 95.6 pts. and median of 96 pts. in 31 notes)

Tasted by rthun on 1/8/2010 & rated 99 points: Decanted for only 1.5 hours before drinking, the 2000 Haut Brion was a beautiful wine and surprisingly approachable at this age. The wine had a dark color with a beautiful bouquet of sweet dark fruit. The wine was plush with extremely sweet and beautifully integrated tannins. Excellent balance and great depth. Best Haut Brion since the 1989. It will probably be at its peak in 3-5 years and will last 20+ years. Awesome wine! (382 views)
Tasted by MichaelB on 11/22/2009 & rated 96 points: This wine is still in a adolescent stage, but it shows great promise. The mature components of Haut Brion are not yet apparent, but it is a nice glimpse into the future.Unusual nose, dense, packed mouthfeel, great acidity and lift, not much tobacco yet, some minerality for sure, a bit of cranberry, 45 second finish. Needs many years, but by noo means coarse or without pleasure. Will let this aerate and come back to it. Strong potential. Extreamely concentrated like many of the upper tier 2000's-our generation's 61's. (832 views)
Tasted by goofy Yno on 4/30/2009 & rated 94 points: earth, cigar soft feminine feel, nice complexity. (1595 views)
Tasted by jivey on 4/30/2009 & rated 98 points: Offline Backstreet - Flirting with perfection, everything you could ask for in Bordeaux, Big yet elegant, full of fruit yet complex and a finish that just wont quit. (1723 views)
Tasted by Anonymous on 4/30/2009 & rated 95 points: dave's bordeaux blowout (backstreet wine salon): showy, even at this young age. outstanding balance, and expression of fruit. tannic, for sure, but those tannins are very well tuned/silky. this is a blockbuster for the house. will improve. (1798 views)
Tasted by Alex G on 4/30/2009: Big step up in quality from Mouton. Killer nose, great balance, and lovely finish. Really good now, someday this will be world class. (1695 views)

Tasted by goofy Yno on 2/6/2008 & rated 96 points: camrmel, black cherry nose. very tanic but with a sweetness and good acidity behind it. loads of complexity and a long finish. (3684 views)
Tasted by jivey on 2/6/2008 & rated 98 points: BSW - Tasted alongside 98, 99, 00 and 03 - Unbelievably consistent nose across the board - Simply ethereal, tobacco, cherry, as complex of a finish with many nuances you will find in a wine. Just stunning. (3764 views)
Tasted by kstoddard on 2/6/2008 & rated 97 points: eRobert Parker Offline - Mature French (mostly Bordeaux) (Backstreet Wine Salon, Phoenix): Deep black fruit nose. Black berry, blackcurrant and black cherry. Very firm tannins. Wound tight as a drum. Great concentration and structure with an enormous fruit backbone. Incredible depth and complexity. Built to last. Needs decades to really shine. My personal WOTN again. (4170 views)
Tasted by mattiasjansson on 2/6/2008 & rated 96 points: Backstreet - Bordeaux and France (Backstreet Wine Salon, Phoenix): Wow. This *will be* a great wine. Not anywhere near ready. Phenomenal fruit, length, but much of it masked by its youth/tannins. (3914 views)
Tasted by Paul D on 9/24/2007: Wine Society Famous Five Tasting - Bordeaux First Growths 2000 & 1990 (Merchant Taylors' Hall, Threadneedle Street, London EC2): Medium/deep ruby core, slightly purple rim. Red berry and plum fruit on the nose, quite forward with some classic baked stone notes and a slight hint of green pepper. More fruity on the palate with striking, attractive acidity, fine, ripe tannins and a lingering fruity finish. Ranked 4th out of 5. (4893 views)
Tasted by Rupert on 9/24/2007 & rated 88 points: Famous Five tasting with Jancis Robinson (Merchant Taylors Hall, London): Frank, fruity, blackcurrant pastille nose, sweet, smooth tobacco - pleasant and approachable, but not distinctive at this stage (4803 views)
Tasted by goofy Yno on 6/6/2007 & rated 97 points: stone, earth, leather, red fruits. integrated tanning, complex and smooth with a long finish. my WOTN (5130 views)

Tasted by mattiasjansson on 6/6/2007 & rated 95 points: Backstreet - Bordeaux (Backstreet Wine Salon, Phoenix): Wow - I was too enamored by this (and the accompanying '99 Mouton) to take notes, but it was a thought-provoking duel of power and elegance. Lush fruit and perfectly balanced. Still a baby. WOTN. (5223 views)
Tasted by kstoddard on 6/6/2007 & rated 98 points: Phoenix eRP Offline - Bordeaux (Backstreet Wine Salon, Phoenix): Tobacco, caramel, cherry, spice, coffee, mocha. Beautifully balanced with great acidity. The depth of this wine is unbelievable. A layered finish that lasts for minutes. My personal WOTN. (5676 views)
Tasted by Eric on 4/14/2007 & rated 98 points: Second Annual First Growth Tasting (Bellevue, WA): A little heat, white flowers, menthol, wood shavings and then BAM, some coffee wakes up and explodes from the glass. This features incredible concentration and density, utterly unevolved, Graves-liqueur. The weight, seamlessness and sheet silkiness of the tannins is just shocking. After a brief display of brilliance, this quickly gained structure and then shut down in the glass. This is going to be a fantastic wine. (5661 views)
Tasted by LEOWINE on 3/7/2007 & rated 98 points: The colour got a hug intense dark core the wine shows no age. The nose is very aromatic with spicy oak summer fruits like raspberry; strawberry, cherry, coffee spice the fruit smells sweet. The nose is fantastic I just want to smell this all night. In the mouth the wine has fantastic ripe tannins which are integrated with the sweet fruit it shows fantastic balance with a 60+ sec finish this is a legend in the making. (5404 views)
Tasted by Rupert on 12/13/2006 & rated 95 points: Haut Brion Vertical (Bentley Hotel, London): Clear kinship with the 2001, here the oak even spicier and more exotic, thicker with more grip, broodingly powerful with a finish that went on and on. (6381 views)
Tasted by wineismylife on 10/14/2006 & rated 94 points: win's 40th Birthday Party (win's house in The Colony, TX): WIML94,WA98,WS94

Tasted October 14, 2006 at win’s 40th birthday party. Served blind in a Riedel restaurant series Bordeaux wine glass. Bag labeled as “Bears”. Dark garnet color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of tobacco, violets, dark fruits and a touch of leather. Flavors of chewy dark fruits and minerals. Young and bold acidity with youthful tannins. My guess is this is the 2000 Haut Brion. COMMENTS: I believe this wine was deanted upwards of 8 hours or more before returning to bottle for the tasting. (8436 views)
Tasted by win on 10/14/2006 & rated 91 points: Blind Birthday Tasting (Win's House - Texas): Upon opening, obviously very closed and fairly acidic. Beautiful red color, with a tinge of purple on the fringe. Within a minute of opening, started to open up a bit, and the refined aromas started. This bottle was opened alongside a 2001 Château Latour, where the this wine seemed to have more fruit aromas initially than the Latour—yet the scent was a bit dusty. After opened for 8 hours and served from the bottle, the wine was still tannic, yet very enjoyable. Probably will not open the bulk of the Bordeaux 2000s until after 2010. (Golden Bears) (8293 views)

Rockss and Fruit (3/20/2007)
(Chateau Haut Brion) Easily my second favorite wine of the vertical. This wine had it all. The nose was deep, brooding and ominous. I loved it. Certain nose of certain wines have this all encompassing aspect that also includes a shade of evil. This definetly had that. Lots of minerality with a wisp of deep cassis fruit and currants. That gravelly quality really starts to show itself. Long, firm and structured palate with great finesse. Enormously concentrated but never heavy with just perfect balance. Acid gives this great freshness. A stunner that easily has 40-50 years ahead of it. True first growth vin de garde. I love the 2000 vintage.

Rockss and Fruit (12/2/2003)
(Haut-Brion) Shitake mushrooms. gravel, raspberry sauce, earth, chocolate, nose is unreal!! Tobacco, tar, just singing in the glass. Every great scent that makes Haut Brion what it is is just screaming out of this glass as I type. This has to be the most unique of the first growths. Silky, seamless yet so elegant on the palate with unreal fruit. Concentrated with grainy tannins. Eternal on the finish. Little closed but man what a nose on this wine!

Vintage Tastings, 2000 Bordeaux (12/1/2007)
(Haut Brion) The third flight was all First Growths: the few, the proud, and the increasingly wealthier. The 2000 Haut Brion was sweet, smoky and spicy. Aromas of cinnamon, sweet perfume and cassis were present in its bready and nutty nose. The palate was long, balanced and elegant, quite regal and fine. Wendy was all over its ‘walnuts,’ while Mike keenly observed its ‘smoked wood and hickory.’ There was great gravel to this outstanding wine, and tremendous definition and pop to its finish  96 points

Vintage Tastings, The New York Tasting of 2005 (10/2/2005)
(Haut Brion) The eighth wine of the second session had a mild nose by comparison, seemingly shy, smooth and easy in the nose, although I felt that there was something lurking in the shadows. The palate was all about the finish for me, sandy, dusty, earthy and with lots of potential, but its front and mid-palate did little for me at this stage. This wine was hibernating, dormant, whatever you want to call it, but perhaps it was me as this was the most popular wine of the night  90+ points
