A magnum from the Yalumba museum cellar. Quite leathery on the nose. Some plum and violets too. It is sweet, opulent and deep, and has something agricultural that just distracts a little.

20-vintage La Conseillante vertical (Fribourg): Part of a 20 vintage vertical (key takeaways in the tasting story). Despite the age, this was still rather extracted. Ripe red cherry and raspberry fruit, a green, slightly unripe herbal feature, cognac, tobacco, dried leaves. The palate had some intensity to it, very little tannin left but nevertheless slightly rustic in appearance. Nice acidity and some structure left, but not - or no longer - in ideal balance.

20 Vintages of La Conseillante (1947-2020): All wines tasted blind. I have had many beautiful Conseillantes in the past, but in this tasting the wines did not shine as expected. A few thoughts: A) Conseillante is a seductive, sensual wine, not unlike more Bordeaux-esque Napa Valley wines. In fact, it reminded me a lot of Opus One, with the blue and black forest berry aromas found in almost every vintage. B) The fruit is ripe, but never too ripe. But only in the cooler years (and 2020) is the fruit perfectly pure and fresh. C) Even in the newer vintages, the (luxurious) oak notes are still present and will need some time to be fully absorbed. D) My biggest problem (and the group had the same one) was that almost all of the newer vintages showed alcohol notes that weren't noticeable en primeur or in the Arrivage tastings (and the wines were served at a perfect temperature or rather a little too cold). E) There were some beautiful wines, complex and seductive, but La Conseillante is not a wine for classic Bordeaux or Left Bank lovers. Conseillante is the hot one-night stand, not the elegant and intellectually appealing wine I want to drink every day. F) The best wine was the 2020 (96pts, the only score above 95pts), confirming my impression that it is a better, less ripe Bordeaux vintage than 2019.
TN: Fine dark chocolate, slightly malty notes, tobacco and truffles, ripe dark berries, fresh herbal notes on the quite expressive nose. Superb and opening up more by the minute. On the palate quite tertiary with lots of wet and dried-out tobacco, not the fine fresh one, a bit dusty. Ripe dark berries. The wine is structured with slightly melted tannins which are not of the finest quality, good tension and rather high but well-integrated acidity. Overall quite good but while the nose showed exceptional the palate couldn’t keep up. However, it got better and more complex with more air. Overall 94pts (the nose was 96+pts).
Decanting: The bottle was opened a few hours before consumption but not decanted. This bottle would have needed two hours in a decanter and I’m almost certain it would have reached a higher rating.

(Château La Conseillante) Bricking medium dark red violet color with pale meniscus; slightly corked, tobacco, shitake mushroom nose; tar, tart cassis, red plum, herbaceous, olive palate; medium-plus finish 92+ pts. (I'm sure it would have scored higher but for the slight TCA, and normally I don't score TCA affected wines, but it was so slight here that it was still possible to get a lot out of the wine)

Pleasant; nice mature complexity; balanced fruit and tannin; long elegant finish.

Chateau La Conseillante 1947-2020 tasted blind: Expressive, earthy, nose, lovely aromas, herbs, pepper, coffee, tertiary. Medium- bodied delicate. Lovely.
