  • Fantastic. All terciary as expected. Fine and velty tannins, still great acidity, pencil shaves, leather, savory. Long finish. Perfect.

  • Nice tertiair aromas. Relatively broad entrance with some sweetness A nice build up wine, totaly balanced and still in very good shape. Big surprise in this year with so much discrepancies. We tasted a few 76ers, this is one of the best, remains surprisingly fresh. Allard Botengs

  • Decanted and paper filtered yielding a brick colored liquor with strong odors of cedar and barnyard. First tasting was unpleasant and had a strange finish with considerable funk. We poured the wine back into the decanter and decided to seek pleasure elsewhere on this Valentine's Day. So, we opened a bottle of Williams Selyem Pinot Noir instead and were half way through it about 90 minutes later when we decided to give the Bordeaux another try. It had blown off all of its old-wine funk and was amazingly fruity and rich with a finish combining plums, strawberries and just a hint of underlying acidity/tartness. This was a major surprise since we'd written this bottle off as a a loss. A friend arrived about an hour later and tasted this wine with a similar reaction -- bright fruit on the palate and a long and pleasing finish. Not bad for an auction bottle purchased for $22.

  • still cleaning out the cellar. reached into a case of what i thought were dead horses and found a collection of 1976 bordeaux. my swiss cheese memory didn't record the fact that i had ever purchased any wine from this vintage. anyway, professional reviews suggested that this wine was way past its prime so we decided to pull the cork. this was the worst experience i have ever had with a cork. loose fitting. but tight enough to contain some back pressure in the bottle. cork was fully saturated. this is the first time that i ever observed invasion of mold along the shank. i was worried that mold had invaded the wine as well but this was apparently not the case. cork had dry rot at the center and crumbled on extraction. despite all these problems, bottle fill was low neck. the wine was miraculously drinkable and relatively intact. leoville poyferre had not yet garnered the reputation it was due at this point in time. in hindsight, i would consider this wine to be a formidable precursor to the outstandingly successful 1982. this bottle offered forthcoming nose with some fruit still evident. tannins fully resolved. some acidity remains. the wine builds in the class. although this is not a bock buster, it certainly must be counted as a success for the vintage. would love to have tasted ten years earlier when i am sure it would have been most charming.

  • Tasted at the Christies pre-sale tasting because I have a bottle myself. No specific notes. Fairly full bodied, but not extremely complex. Has a comparable quality to the 1979, but is softer and more developed. In the beginning of its adult stage. Will be nice to drink between now and the next 5 years or so.
