Community Tasting Notes (1)

  • That '70's show...all '70's all the time: Loire, Spain, Ca, Bordeaux, Port. (Applewood): Nicolas Joly didn't take the reigns over from his mother until 1977, with his first vintage being 1978, so this being made by the old regime and it being a terrific year in the Loire, I had high hopes for the wine. Great fill and good color, but, alas, it was not to be, though we probably did not give this wine enough time to fully open. Starts off with a hint of nutty/oxidative aromas with a touch of apple and mineral. Lean and mean on the palate with not much fruit to support the razor sharp acidity. It really needed a lot of time for things to settle in and the wine did improve with time, going from nutty, mineral and apple flavors to ripe pear, nougat and caramel flavors with softer structure by the end of the evening. That said, the wine remained fairly petulant and needed food to help tame its aggressiveness. Low B-.
