  • Nicolas Joly, and his revolutionary approach to winegrowing and winemaking, is synonymous with both Savennières specifically and Loire Chenin Blanc in general. Coulée de Serrant, Joly’s monopole 7-hectare vineyard, is one of the few appellations in France owned by a single estate (the other two being Romanée Conti and Château-Grillet). It was first planted in 1130 by Cistercian monks. The vines here are mostly 35 to 40 years old, with the oldest planted in 1935.

From the monopole and single vineyard AOC of Coulee de Serrant comes Nicolas Joly’s top flight chenin blanc. Of course Joly’s name is synonymous with some of the most concerted and dedicated biodynamic farming in the wine world. This chenin blanc arguably one of the most chased down whites from France. Fancy as. I remember more bony, skeletal and mineral-flecked wines in the past, but the modern incarnation of Coulee de Serrant is power, depth, richness.

  • Tasted in a flight of Savenierres among 11 total Chenin blancs.

This bottle had mold in the capsule, but thankfully the wine was perfectly sound, even a little clean for the Domaine. I saw a video recently where Nicolas Joly is talking with Gary V about his wines’ unique and individual personalities. This one is a high school quarterback. Confident, knows he’s the bmoc, well rounded, not lacking in any particular way, but a bit boisterous too, with the alcohol over 15% really sticking out like a popped collar. Still, this wine was showy, not as exotic as the 17, and built for a long age.

  • Light gold colour. Extremely complex & attractive nose. Full deep complex taste, hints of sweetness, WOW ! Smooth finish, well balanced. Extraordinary white wine, can not compare with anything I have drunk before (including Coulée de Serrant). SUPER! Will probably age slowly for decades, in a good cellar.

  • 🏅 Rating 92/100 (4,2⭐)

Pale golden yellow color. It opened with aromas of peach compote and showed plenty of yellow fruits. 15% Alc. was well integrated. Bitter touch of botrytis and citrus finish. Signature Chenin Blanc pronounced acidity. This is the flagship monopole vineyard belonging to Joly family. It is 900 year old vineyard first planted by monks. Biodynamic since early 1980s.
