Fully mature, with a complex, secondary nose of tobacco, stone, cigar box, black cherry, earth and spice. Medium bodied, with some rusticity in the tannins, this is at peak, or slightly past showing its best.
On the nose, rancio and slightly oxidized fruit, rather like an amontillado sherry, which is a bit off-putting. The attack is weak and acidic, with fading red fruits, but this is followed up by a very rich and deep middle section, full of mature, jammy redcurrants, with earthiness and power. Quite a good finish too. Overall this is not bad, not a good example of a 1990, nor of Lafon-Rochet, which has improved immeasurably since. It certainly needs finishing now before it completely fades away.
