  • Well you can't win 'em all, particularly with older wines. This was from a lot that had some mediocre fills and bottles with seepage, and this was one of the worst in the bunch (mid shoulder fill). After cutting off the capsule, it was clear this was a leaker, and in the process of wiping off the top of the cork, I inadvertently pushed it into the bottle (so yeah, very loose cork). The color was still good for a wine this age and it was not maderized, but it is clearly tired and not showing as other bottles have. Those beastly '75 tannins are still there too, making for a less than enjoyable drinking experience. Not rated.

  • This was the lowest fill (mid-shoulder) of a recent case purchase, with signs of past seepage. The cork was saturated all the way through with considerable mold under the capsule. But I remained optimistic since the other three low-fill bottles (with similarly sad corks) that I've tried in the past year have been surprisingly solid. Color is dark, nearly opaque purple, with slight browning at the rim, befitting its age. Cedar, cigar box and red cherry fruit on the nose, with some herbal and anise notes. Lots of tart red fruit up front (cranberry, sour cherry, pomegranate), with predictably strong tannins that linger on the medium-long finish. A bit short in the midpalate, but for a 45+ year-old wine from a fiercely tannic vintage, this is rather approachable, and brings much joy to this lover of old claret. At $45 all in, a great purchase.

BTW, I love that the bottle size indicates "73 cL." Not 750 mL or even 720 mL, but 73 cL.

  • Top shoulder fill, cork was soaked nearly through but extracted easily with the Durand. Excellent, youthful color with no sign of bricking. Lots of cedar and red cherry on the nose, with hints of green olive. A bit lean on fruit, like many '75s, but the tannins are not as fierce as many wines from this vintage. Loaded with cassis and tobacco, drinking very well now, though likely on its slow decline.
