Translucent ruby in the glass; the nose has ferrous notes, blood and leather.
Medium- to light-bodied on the palate; open and expressive, with ripe blackberry fruit - there is a "savoriness" here that is pretty appealing right now. A little acerbity on the finish, but given the slow to relent tannins of this vintage, not bad at all on first look.
Opened for a dinner tonight, so time wise this will probably get 5+ hours of slow-O before serving.
Decanted for 1 hour. Very nice nose, typical Bordeaux perfume. Nice red fruits on the palate, with good intensity. Served this after the 1982 Batailley, with Prime Rib and roasted potatoes. This wine was easily the favorite, but ... The aftertaste was noticeably short / sharp / bitter compared to the Batailley.
Wow! What a bottle. Stored ideally in the my cellar since 1989. Smooth elegance with a well balanced and withheld power. Resembled more the elegance of a St. Julien than the austerity and power of St. Estephe. Tasted alongside Pichon Comtesse 86 and Lynch Bages 85. To bottles that took the tasting, but Calon Segur was absolutely not a bad third weel! Wonderful bottle. Drink up.
