Heidi's Group: Memorable Wines (St. Genevieve, Mpls, MN): Light-medium gold color. Drank a glass over an hour plus. The nose is bold with roasted hazelnuts, lemon peel, lacqueur and jasmine. The palate is powerful, intense, nutty, lacqueured, candied lemon, oxidative, parafin, citrus peel, dried herbs, apricot, and a burst of baking spice on the finish. A bold contrast to the picturesque '06 Comte. 93+ to 94pts.

Heidi's Gang monthly @ StG. SS,CV,KB,DD,LI & CS. Thanks for organizing Siggy! Dave D's btl tonight. Well, this a fun contrast with the 06 Taittinger Comtes! I'm driving my silver dream car, a '71 Porsche 911S Targa through some exhilarating S curves when along comes a red '71 Corvette with a 454 LT-1 engine and blows my doors off on a straightaway! Comtes finesse vs the utter power of Krug. What a fun flight! Thanks Dave! Tasty, tasty, tasty!

The taste had a boquette of dill, spices, yellowish fruit, only a little light taste of bisquit and bread. in the background some acid. Not to strong acid, rounded and balanced.
The mouse was fine but not superior.
A good wine but I wonder if it can be even better in the coming years?
The 2003 is better than the 2004 until days date.

Made from 46 % pinot noir, 29 % chardonnay and 25 % meunier. Very deep bouquet. Subdued intensity. Full of preserved quince and yellow apples and very autolytic. Beautiful acidity, great balance, depth and density. Above it all, the preserved fruits and hints of white pepper, yeasty bread and marzipan. Lengthy finish. Sweet spot right now but can still be stored.

Monday hangout at Domaine (Chicago, IL): The best showing yet of this for me. It's certainly big and toasty, but there is lots of classic Krug power and richness here, and this certainly hearkens back to the weight and density of the Krug of yore. Really goes to show how time does wonders for Krug, and while I had doubts about this vintage originally, I have very much come around to it. Impressive.

Great nose here. Bruised apples, sweet spices, yeast, yellow fruit. Generous and fresh palate at the same time. Really a top showing how a large house style should look like after 20 years. 96+

Pardon the brevity, I don't drink enough champagne!
Single blind but bottles pulled at random.
Fresh brioche, almond skin, jasmine with high tone fruit (nashi pears and granny smith apples). Great acidity and tension, this has some age naturally but drinking lovely!

Liz's B-Day Dinner at Singapore Swimming Club - Krug Vintage Vertical (Singapore Swimming Club): Krug Vintage vertical spanning Collection 1988/1996/1998/2000/2002/2003/2004/2006. Blind tasting. 2nd wine of flight. Tasted blind this ended up being revealed as the 2003. It defied my attempt to pick it as the ripest of all wines presented. It felt rather interesting and to my taste was up there with second tier on the evening. Vivacious mousse. Lemon curd. Bruised apple. Pronounced oxidative notes on the nose.

Truffle Night at The Papies (The Papies, Elizabeth St, London): 3 years since we had this last ( Papies 95) and if nothing else it was even better than we remember. Exceptional wine, perfect balance, soft rich feel, round and lush, polished and with an effortless feel to it like it should be given the pedigree. We have had a lot of questions marks about this vintage and indeed when it comes to Krug it transcends the vintage worries. Impressive and an easy 96

This is in a great spot with loads of rich fruit and power with plenty of freshness and energy. No signs of roastedness or heaviness. An excellent 2003.

Showing some early signs of maturity, but still provides a lot of power, pleasure, and intense brightness. Hard to tell this was a warm year except for the depth of impressive fruit. In a nice spot. Clearly prefer the 2002 and 2008 versions, but this is no slouch either.

Krug 2003. Tydelig mer modning og mørkere frukt. Fortsatt pen frukt, men holder ikke mot de beste. Svak fin mousse. Masse frukt i munn. 92p+

Astoria If you seek to avoid the geriatric sherry-like champagnes yet want that honeyed buttery punch with a reasonable reduction and good fruit, this one sits smack damn on top of your wish list. Keeps on developing during the course of drinking which was a little hasty. So rounded and good. And not an acid-monster.

Having drank the 98 yesterday and all of the vintages since 96 in the last month or so, this is the weakest offering. It’s Krug so we are on a different scale but this is a bit disjointed even after 30 min of air. Finish is disappointing for Krug. Having tasted the 02 and 03 together at Krug in Champagne, it’s night and day between the two. I don’t see the point in continuing to age this vintage. This is in its prime and will continue to hold up for the next 5 plus years or so. Anyone with the 159th edition of the nv Krug based on the 03 vintage, need not worry, those are drinking very well right now. Revisit 2023

Very well done from an otherwise uninspiring vintage for the most part. Not the classic intense style of vintage Krug but beautifully balanced and complex drinking vey well now out of magnum.

Epic Bordeaux for an Epic Birthday!; 9/1/2021-9/12/2021 (Paris & Bordeaux): From a magnum. This wine was the first vintage Krug we had right as we were going down the wine rabbit hole and so I have a bit of a special place for it. Wine is much too young probably to really be drinking. It's young and fresh and I think perhaps not very evolved from the bottle we had maybe 8 years ago. Long life ahead of it.

Outstanding wine, I just loved it. Delicate mousse, overripe apple and delicate tertiary nutty notes. 2003 was a "rich" year, I do not necessarily think it is getting better but off course even more tertiary.

Blind I was impressed again. The cdm 03 is tremendous but the regular millesime does not to hide behind the giant. So lush, unbelievable opulent but never forgetting the balancing acidity. In 2003 krug and selosse produced the master pieces by far. One of the best wines of this special krug lunch. 97-98

3rd bottle of this year, it's in a great spot to enjoy, and it does make a difference when in a Joseph Krug glass by Riedel. Less volumptous and more round and balance. Singing lovely, great toffee and brioche note with nice intensity. Who say 2003 is an off-vintage? 16.5/20

Slightly golden. Delicate bubbles. Minerals and crushed stones on the nose. Developed palate. Full bodied. This is a substantial wine. Less acidity than I expected but likely a result of the warm growing vintage. For ESH birthday and a great opening bottle.

Lovely nutty nose, especially hazelnut aroma. A rich and lush champagne that reflects the vintage very well - it's a tough one for many houses. Rich body but balanced by the acidity - which of course is on the lower side for champagne but still manage to lift it. Great to pair with food and I always love enjoying it with dimsum. The body and richness balance the weighty flavour well. Plenty of brioche, nuts on the palate. Not the most fizzy one. Enjoy it now! 16/20

Drinking very well now. Good richness with strong biscuit savoury note and aftertaste. Acidity medium only for champagne because of the super hot vintage, but it doesn't affect the liveliness and balance of the wine. Good density and medium+ body but in good balance. Not the most glorious Krug but very well done on a difficult vintage. Delicious, drink it now to next 3-5 years! 16.5/20

This was very good with richness and Krug finesse, but I liked vs loved it. Not objective, but had a lack of harmony where it felt the pieces - Krug, vintage, grapes - where each forcing themselves to be notice vs a unified whole.

Dinner at the Papies (The Papies, Elizabeth St, London): 4 years since we had this last ( Papies 93) and this is now in full blossom and glory. Effortlessly elegant and unlike the 2003 Dom Perignon ( Papies 92-93) ,that we had side by side and felt atypical , this was true to Krug style. Nice rich and soft toasty, balanced and simply excellent. 95

Nose- Fresh herbs, fruits, spices with yeast, brioche & lemons. Palate- brioche, some yeast, lemons & tropical fruits. Some minerals, with a medium body. Quite good but not nearly as good as 02 or 04. Probably getting close to peak.

Medium gold, ultra fine beading. Nose: strawberry, some raspberry, grapefruit, honey and a hint of nuttiness. Palate: medium bodied, intense but elegant and fresh with a nice line of acidity. Excellent balance. Overall surprising for such a warm vintage. An excellent wine.

Inaugural mensual 17th dinner (Nico Osteria) (Chicago, IL): 313044. Krug is Krug, but this is definitely one of the weaker vintages of the decade. There's some of the oxidative, nutty tones on the nose here, and they do carry through to the palate. However, on the palate, this just doesn't have the layered complexity I expect from Krug. On the other hand, this definitely still tastes like Krug, but like the 2006 recently tasted (the impetus for opening this bottle), this is just a little thin and less rich than Krug ought to be. Lower in acidity too, this I think will be a faster aging edition. Mind you, I'd be happy to drink this, but I'm not a buyer (apart from the six bottles I bought from Premier Cru which have yet to be delivered).

A lost Friday afternoon gathering – Mostly blind, some double blind (Blacksalt, Washington DC): Slightly coiled nose displaying ripe concentrated yellow fruit, apricot, lemon curd, caramel apple, cinnamon and other sweet spices, and limestone. Very good concentration, subdued concentrated yellow fruit, fine medium abundant mousse, ripe and deeply toned, bright acidity, good mineral and a medium long concentrated yellow fruit and caramel driven finish with cinnamon at the end. There is a hint of bitterness. It is not too expressive. Perhaps additional ten years of cellaring will help, i.e. more tertiary expression and less ripeness.

Tasted blind and was pleasantly surprised about the richness and acidity balance of the 2003 Krug, a Champagne I once deemed simple and lacked acidity (eating my words). Muscular orchard fruits, exuberant red berries and other Pinot Noir fruits. Young with leesy texture and oak spices. Full bodied. The ripeness and masculinity reminds me of 2006 Champagne. Pinot Noir dominant, 2006? (91/100)

This was as expected - very ripe vintage champagne but in classy hands: Very golden in the glass, a strong toast, smoke and creme brulee / toffee notes. With air the pinot showed some generous fruit. A good effort for the vintage for sure.

I think this has enough glance and structure to deal with the scale of the vintage... given the way vintage krug ages, the reality is is this has a lot of the big flavours you see by aging other vintages for a decade or so.

Lazy sunday afternoon Krug event - Vertical of 160eme-166eme , some vintage brut, Mesnil and Rose.: I have a really tough time with this vintage. It's really ripe to the point that it's almost unpleasant. I expect more complexity with Krug. It's a wine in overdrive but in a way that the mouthfeel feels disjointed. I had the 03 Mesnil a couple years ago and had a similar reaction, it almost has a chemical note to it on the finish as there's quite a bit of bitterness.

Golden color. Smells of apricot, honey, creme brulee, and baked goods. Some mushroom as well. Palate: Mushrooms, and honey with some kind of tangerine or orange. Excellent acid and colonizing bubbles give this big boy a lot of life. Tastes like it looks (gold nectar). Plenty of autumn spice on backend.

Darker golden color compared to the '03 CdM, graham cracker, yeasty notes, vinous; rich with great krug character, yeast, spices, touch of caramel, red apple; very powerful on the palate, open and accessible now as are most of the '03's, super foamy fine bubbles, disipates/evaporates off the tongue; very long finish. From Jerome: "spicy but fresh". This is drinking great right now and probably shouldn't be aged more than 5 years further. Fun fact: ALL of the 2003 Clos d'Ambonnay fruit was blended into the '03 Vintage Brut. With Jerome Jacoillot of Krug at Effervescence.

2003 KRUG VINTAGE BRUT- ID# 214029; although 03` was a hot vintage, Krug declared this vintage naming it “Vivacité Solaire” (Vivacious Radiance) as they were surprised to find really good fruit with freshness, balance, expressiveness, vivacity and finesse; I acquired 3 bottles with a little trepidation although I have such great respect for the house and trusted this had to be worth the purchase and I was not disappointed with this first bottle; following its gold yellow colour came fresh apple and citrus fruit joined by slightly toasted brioche, mild hints of caramel and almonds; it certainly had finesse and charm and was on the more lean side of vintage Krug; the acidity was also on the lighter side; 46% Pinot Noir, 29% Chardonnay, 25% Pinot Meunier.

Had next to 99 Dom. Showed very well. Had a nice zestiness to the nose with autolytic notes following. Palate was rich with Brioche and plenty of body, albeit not the fullest or richest vintage for Krug. Great start to NYE and good kick off for 2018.

Cork a touch hard to remove. Pale gold. I don't normally comment on the mousse, but the bubbles are pinprick-small and rise gently. Rather dumb nose initially, high and a touch green. With air and warmth, honeycomb and white flowers. Too cold to begin with, so the taste was similarly subdued. Bracing acidity but fairly broad fruit; rather nutty. Then orange and quince, and a little butterscotch.
It isn't bad, but this bottle underperformed. It's definitely genuine (cork, capsule, etc - a slight risk with a non-specialist supplier), and showing no signs of poor storage, so maybe it's in a closed phase (or shocked by transportation, if that's actually a thing). Once again, I'm glad I caught this at the bottom of its price range (it pays to check all the suppliers regularly).
Krug ID 114001, disgorged winter '13/14. [Cork + cage; 12% abv; Amazon, £170, widely £185-200].

Tasted next to 2004 and 2002 vintage. Disgorged in Q2/14. Darker in colour than both and quite different on the nose - exuberant, open, evolved, notes of cinnamon, smoke, yellow fruit, caramel, brioche. On the palate rich and generous, lots of weight but also good acidity, layered, less vibrant and lively, very lingering and persistent. Opinions were split amongst the group with one fellow taster even asking Olivier Krug if it was a mistake in hindsight to create a vintage champagne in 2003. I liked it a lot on the day but probably best for drinking soon. 94-96

Considering the vintage this was really good. Not overly ripe and not lacking acidity at all. Good butterscotch and caramel in the glass. Really expressive wine that gains complexity in the glass. I would say based on my experience that this is one of the better 03s in all of France.

Krug have done a good job with their difficult 2003. 46% PN, 29% C, 25% PM - with the chardonnay picked in August to preserve acidity and rest October (vines shut down for 1 month). More ginger and lychee on the nose than usual, and sweet in the mouth with mango, lychee and peach. Well built and structured but like 89 Krug overshadowed by the vintages before/after. Much better balanced than expected and will certainly improve with 5yrs in bottle - no hurry to drink this. A solid but not spectacular Krug. Hold to 2023. 94pts

A private dinner (Scharzhof, Wiltingen, Germany): Rich and spicy nose, toasted, big Pinot aromas, deep; quite a formidable palate, fierce acidity, especially for a 2003, opulent but seems a bit uneasy at present; tight finish, but it is layered and long. Wait.

Incredible dinner wines with friends (Screagle, Krug, Yquem, Bryant, +++) (Our home): Great showing and the groups seemed to prefer this over the 04 Dom. It did seem to be advancing pretty fast (for a Krug). Golden in color, much deeper than the Dom. The nose has that bit of oxidation Krug seems to have but just a bit and in a good way. Also some toast, hazelnut and Crem Brulee. With air, some ginger and even a slight pear emerge. On the palate, this is big wine. Lots of everything going on although perhaps it lacks the precision of the Dom. Notes of ginger, hazelnut, a bit of vanilla and peach pie. Surprisingly good acidity for 03. Long finish. Worked with the food. This exceeded my expectations for the vintage.

Nice freshness, with lots of bread dough and hazelnut on the nose; with air, some cashews and tangerine. The palate is balanced - not too heavy, not too light - but when served s/b/s with the 2006 Moutard Arbanne Cuvèe VV, this seemed a bit oafish in a way. Still, this was able to stand up to some of bolder flavors of several of the dishes (which was appreciated), but if asked which one I'd prefer to have a second glass of, the Moutard was clearly the more complete and satisfying wine; for me, anyway. May very well be room for some slight improvement with further cellaring. 12,0% abv I.D. 114002

The nose is expressive from the get up with notes of candied fruits, toast, almond, truffle butter and brioche. The palate is kind of like '03 red Burg. There's a bit of a hole in the mid-palate and acidity is low. It certainly doesn't lack any freshness and has quite a salty finish. Seriously good with fresh oysters.

Showing ripe apple and to a lesser extent pear, the ripeness here is more rounded than opulent. Nice chalk notes on both initial nose and palate, although fading with airtime. Two years since we tried this last (Papies 91-92 - May 2014) and still this is an atypical Krug and buttoned down. It is developing nicely though and much like we felt 2 years ago patience is what was needed here. Quite approachable now , floral, lightest touch of yeast, good ripe fruit and very balanced. It still lacks a magic factor, that krug depth and complexity but wouldn't bet against it. 93

Kjenner litt kaffe her også.

The best 2003 I had so far, very accessible, ripe yellow stone fruits as peaches, a fresh acidity for 2003 and nice roasted aromas, I will drink it now, 94-95

2003 is indeed a year of power. This has it in heaps, with contrasting minerality that provides structure and seems to provide good balance. Nose of straw and muted hay, mushrooms, toast and almonds, very supple on the palette, with fine bubbles and a lovingly sculpted finish.

Vintage like more broad in the palate than usally. In the nose brioche, pears and less citrus than typically for Krug, the acidity is very smooth but will give the wine only a short life, would drink it over the next 5 years, middle long finish, 92

Revisiting after 8months, this hot vintage Krug did improved quite a bit. Better integration and no more bitterness in the finish. Still slightly fruit forward but will not make this champagne less enjoyable.

White flowers, mineral, pineapple on the nose. Refreshing acidity on the palate, fine mousse, slightly lean, slightly lemony citrus, mineral. Refreshing. Slightly short. Not as rich as the 2006 base year grande cuvee. But great for the vintage and very enjoyable.

This is a little bit of a tough wine to score because of the expectations I have for vintage Krug. In and of itself, this is a great, deep, rich, almost voluptuous Champagne, where the fruit takes on a slightly roasted character, buffered by spice, ginger and pastry-like autolytic notes, but it doesn't hit the highest notes of, say a '95 or '96. If this were in a vertical tasting, there is a good chance that this would be the weak link, but it is still an amazing wine. Vintage Krug is still one of the strongest points of evidence that there might be a god of some sort and that they truly love us.

Flatter current profile, with ripe fruit but less minerality, acid and savory notes than the '02 served alongside. Limestone notes on the front of the palate. Harvested mid-August. 92-93

Rounded, less depth, riper fruit than other vintages. However gaining some complexity; in general I find this to be a better wine that it was a year ago. 93

Pale yellow. Not showing any of the expected (over-)ripeness of the vintage. Great balance of acidic freshness, fine mousse and a body with pain grille / brioche, white fruit and a touch of nuttiness. Great pairing both with oysters and a cold fish roe pasta starter at home. With the Egly Ouriet, probably the best Champagne I have had.

A special bottle of champagne. Sun bright yellow and very youthful. Plenty of lemon/citrus, stone and yeasty notes. Lively with density and layered. Focused and pure, this wine will be great many years from now. This is the best bottle of champagne i've had in the last year.

Tasted among a series of champagnes and sparking wines on New Years Eve (2016). This was the wine of the night. Simply a great champagne. It has improved since my last tasting of it and was much more flavorful and less closed than I remember. The champagnes included (in the ascending order of scores) Freixenet (Black bottle) 85, Kruet Blanc Des Noirs NV -88, Perrier Jouet Brut NV - 90, Roederer Estate Brut (Anderson Valley - 91, and Krug Vintage 2003 -96

KRUG Tasting (Zurich, Switzerland): Light straw in color. Nose shows caramel, coffee and smoke notes. Nice balance, elegant and long. I am missing a bit the backbone and mid-plate. Overall I expected the 2003 Krug to be heavier / richer. Still a nice wine and still youthful.

Wine Gang 'Ultimate Champagne' (Basement, 67 Pall Mall): A little less floral and more dense on the nose. Still very fresh though. More floral on the palate with a surprising freshness and lightness on the finish. More emphasis on the attack than the finish. This has a lighter, floatier feel to it than the nv. Impressive for 03. ****

Drank alongside the 2000 Krug. The aromas on the nose were about the same - nice bready/lemony/custard tones. The big difference came on the palate. This was a touch less sharp. Acidity was toned down just enough to notice but the flavors were on point. A good showing from a tougher vintage.

Tim's wedding (Chicago, IL): The 2003 Krug, while impressive for a 2003 Champagne, is unfortunately not as impressive as a bottle of Krug. This is a bit too sweet and rich for me, and doesn't have the same focus and drive as a leaner vintage might. Granted, this is still an excellent wine, but I think that the riper vintage does not play too well with the broad-shouldered house style.

Guigal La La dinner (Eddie V's): Very ripe yellow fruits but good freshness, lemon curd, also fresh apple, smoked oyster, oyster shell and brioche. Excellent concentration, quite dense, fine mousse, sweet yellow fruit driven palate impression, bright acidity and love sweet finish. A lot going on here. It will need another decade to reach the peak but already quite enjoyable with ample fruits.

Tasted in Krug event with Eric Lebel. Eric Lebel said 2003 was a tough vintage for Chardonnay so the blend is more dominant by the 2 Pinots with only 29% of Chardonnay. Rich all the way from the nose to palate - I can sense the heat of the vintage and being exaggerated by the Pinots, giving a rich powerful wine. Palate is quite full but I found it's a bit too strong to my liking. A very good expression of the year, just a matter of style. 16/20

Knightsbridge Annual Holiday Burgundy/Champagne Tasting and Sale (Northbrook, IL): Tasting, brief note. Lush and very ripe, but with the acidity and overall structure to maintain excellent balance. Lots of ripe apple and some baked apple with classic Krug toasty charm. While this has the structure to age I would expect it best in the next decade.

Knightsbridge Wine Shoppe - Annual Burg & Champagne Tasting (Northbrook, IL): Walk around tasting, brief note. Tight nose is dry with baked apple. Krug Night with Aldo Sohm (Aldo Sohm Wine Bar, NYC): Aged for 11 years with multiple disgorgements before release, this wine is composed of 46% pinot noir, 29% chardonnay and 25% pinot meunier. It pours a deep gold color with very thick legs. On the nose, a very strong brioche note supported by other notes of sugarcane, musky cheese, game, hazelnuts, beurre noisette and citrus oils. With time, there are even copious amounts of caramel popcorn. Compared to the 2000, the 2003 has more breadth and fruit potential but less forward and linear than the 2000. On the palate, the wine is fruit-dominated supported by a robust, mineral backbone and higher levels of residual sugar than that of the 2000. The effervescence is just lovely, delicate yet intense. There are notes of citrus oils, cheeses, spice, truffle and nuts on the palate. The finish is incredibly long and incredibly smoky, with a suppleness to boot. For me, I prefer this to the 2000, mostly because of the fruit-forward approach and generous body. This is just as Aldo Sohm puts it, sugar to champagne is like makeup. It allows it to blossom beautifully from otherwise austere, abrasive wines. And in this vintage, it certainly proves true.

Certainly this is the best 2003 vintage champagne that I have tasted, yet it is still marked by the year. Slightly sweet and powdered sugar like on the nose. Very fresh with white fruit and much better acidity than on would expect from such a hot year. Nonetheless, it lacks the breadth and weight of the 2000 just tasted. But much better than the DP 2003.

I have tasted around 20 different vintages of Krug and this is probably the worst vintage wine Krug ever released. Strange on the nose, bitter finish. This is not even good.
Tasted next to Krug 1996, 1998 and 2000. All others were great but not the 2003.
Krug Lunch with Julien Pepin Lehalleur (The Winery, Surrey Hills): The 2003 gets a bad rap, it really shouldn't. I've been underwhelmed by other 2003 wines, but Krug bucks the trend with a finessed citrus wine, very fresh. Interesting for wine that is relatively skewed to Pinot Meunier.
It is a youngster (but drinking wonderfully at the moment), some age will help it further develop that Krug characteristic.

My first ever visit to Champagne; 6/22/2015-6/23/2015 (Reims): Ripe apple and Meyer lemon aromas with same fruit flavors, just slightly more restrained. Starts off fun and rounded, finishes with a burst of energy. Cellarworthy and impressive, particularly given the vintage, but not as much my preferred style vs the 2000 vintage in the next glass.

KRUG in every aspect, however; does not posses the "KRUG Smoke" as one reviewer coins the unmistakable nose. The MV has more smoke and this vintage has more bubbles and a longer finish.

Perfect bottle. 750 ml. Great mousse! Very lively, lots and lots of tiny elegant bubbles. Very young colour. Slightly yellow. If served blind you would nail this one by just a sniff of the bouquet. It is Krug all over ... what I call the Krug-smoke. Smoke, mineral, citrus, sea shells, bread/toast and a bit volatile acidity on top of it. Just lovely! Great mouthfill! Lovely texture! Balance, pure finess, great flavours of citrus, grapes, bread and hint of coffee I would say. As usual this Krug has a lovely mineral. Long elegant finish! I must admit I was a bit suspicious when it came to the vintage 2003 in Champagne ... but both Dom Perignon and this Krug made me very curious about the vintage. Next to try is the 2003 Clos des Goisses.

Lychee, lemon rind, peach, and secondary aromas and flavors of mango pair well with more savory sensations of bread dough and wet warm rocks. Still very Krug-ish to me. I like it enough now but seems as if it should age well given depth of flavors and sufficient acid.

Champagne - 100 Vintage and NV Champagne; 12/15/2015-12/15/2020: During a vintage Champagne tasting at a Merchant. My note may look astronomic but in this tasting this was by far the best bottle. It stood, for my palate, miles apart from the rest. The only Champagne I kept coming back to and wowed me every time. Very subtle nose, discrete notes of flowers, mint, nuts and white fruit. elegant and complex. Also on the palate, impressed much more with the depth of the aroma and not just the bubbles. You could sense that this was a great white wine before it was turned into Champagne. Very fine perlage, very long. Terrific!
Nez de pomme, légèrement tatin, assorti de pâte d'amande. Acidité moyenne (marque du millésime), mais longueur marquante avec une certaine tension tout de même.

One of the better champagnes of that year. Definite lemon peel at start. Restrained tannin's (almost locked up) which was offset by the zesty fruit finish of lemon. Also a noticeable dusty limestone aftertaste . This definitely needs some age to it. I bought 6 more to experience.

Medium silver-gold colour. Lively, vigourous and persistent streams of pinprick-sized bubbles. Nose is toasty, rich, inviting, fresh, tons of depth - quite mesmerising. Palate is amazingly fresh, pure and scimitar-blade cutting sharpness. High-toned. Resonant and reverberant inside the head - young but really gorgeous, it rings inside your head like a hand bell. Seems low dosage - lean and high-cheekbones. It gets richer with time in the glass, like a young Batard-Montrachet with bubbles. Stupendous.....but it completely falls over after 2 hours in the glass whereas the 2003 Clos Du Mesnil was still going from strength to strength. Whatever, it is so lovely to drink that few would nurse a glass for that long.

At the winery: Fresh, intense nose, butter, pear, baking spices, baked apple; rich, super fine, wieghty but very light and ethereal at the same time with a great high-toned intensity buoyed by lots of acidity. Rounder, more generous than the 2000. Am not a fan of '03 Champagnes, but this clearly in an exception. Krug did an amazing job with this vintage by sourcing grapes from only the coolest vintages and managing the vineyards well. So good I just bought 3. Maybe it won't go 20 years (I don't really care, and possibly it will) but for pure pleasure this takes the cake so to speak.

Dumplings and some nice bottles: Green apple, peach, pear and nutty aromas. Intense with some of that nuttiness to the palate as well. The acidity still gives it freshness and I actually think the balance is quite good considering the year and the power behind it. Grew in the glass with air and ended up impressing me more than I thought it would. Don't think its a classic Krug but it is great anyway.

Fresh citrusy nose with oak and toast. Palate quite accessible, forward, ripe, rather big and a bit lacking in acidity. Finish with minerals and sight bitterness. I prefer the 2000 version than this, but perhaps this is better than the Dom 03 with better potential.

The Krug Kitchen (Aveqia, London): Quite a restrained champagne, an issue of being too young or just a 2003? We debated this at length but of we can draw a parallel from DP2003 which was really difficult upon release yet blossomed a year later maybe time is whta it needs. For sure an atipical Krug compared to the 2000 we had side by side, higher proportion of pinor meunier here, quite crisp, very citrussy. lacks richness at this stage and that yeasty side but maybe time will add that one. 91-92 for the moment from us and hopefully we will cross paths in the future

Drunk at a Krug event. Surprisingly pale colour. On the nose, bread, citrus and red apple, unexpectedly light and not forward. The palate had a toasty lemon and orchard profile which had a touch of richness but came across as quite tight and lacking in intensity. Maybe this is going through a tricky phase but I won't be buying any of this based on the showing of these bottles. DP03 is the wine to buy in this vintage I think. *** (***1/2-****??)

Birthday Dinner 2014 (Saint Pierre, Quayside Isle): A really solid Champagne, but this was a much tighter-wound wine than the nicely aged Grand Cuvee that was served with it. The nose was a case in point, showing bright but tight-lipped and rather unexpressive notes of lemons and lime packed with plenty of earthy minerality. Only after a nice long time in the glass did some subtle scents of caramel biscuits start drifting out, while the bright fruited accents spread out into richer, deeper citrus aromas – it was quite a power-packed, and rather engaging nose at that point, if perhaps lacking a bit of complexity. On the palate, this was a very powerful, very muscular Champagne, with the warmth of the vintage coming in with the ripeness and weight of the fruit, yet with tons of acidity driving it on at the same time. It was very tight on first pour as well, with an almost one-dimensionally citrus character. However, like the nose, it opened up really nicely over time, with bright lemony tones shading into more generous flavours of green apple flesh wound around a beautifully core of slatey mineral and finely vigorous mousse. The finish was still quite tight, but had a good energy and length to it. There was quite a lot going on in the core of the wine, but it was still too young to fully express itself. I would wait 5-6 years at least, although I do think that this will be a relatively early maturing vintage Krug. While not the greatest Krug of recent times, this still is a very solid Champagne.

Nose: Well balanced and expansive nose filled with peaches, nectarines, brioche, warm dough, green apples, and roasted nuts. There is a lot of poise and class to the nose with good depth and layering.
Taste: Full bodied with medium+ acidity. The structure is more on the sneaky side as it almost seems in balance right now, but it shows its youth on the back end. The feel is polished with nectarines, brioche, warm dough, green and red apples, roasted nuts, and some citrus tones.
Overall: The only thing surprising about this is that it's an 03. It doesn't seem blowsy or lacking acidity, instead it shows a lot of class and poise that one would expect from Krug. While this may not necessarily be a long distance runner, this still feels like it has plenty of life ahead of it and there is definite room for improvement.

1999 Burgundy 1er Dinner (goosefoot - Chicago IL): Bottle had just been shipped in that day, so probably not completely representative. Very enchanting aromatic start with lots of fresh apple and lemon curd as well as hints of berries and brioche. Palate also showed forward and ripe fruit but with good power and balance. There was some awkward structure and sharp elbows at the finish that I will attribute to its travel over the prior day or two. So putting that aside, this has great potential...no surprise since it's Krug, but a bit of a surprise given it is from 2003.

Visit to Krug including a premiere tasting of 2003 Krug (Reims): Medium yellow colour. Nose with ripe yellow fruit including yellow apples, some peach, citrus, honey, some mint, mineral, bready notes, some vanilla, and discrete flowery notes. After some time in the glass some more oak barrel notes emerge. The palate shows ripe yellow fruit, powerful concentration, yellow apples, some yellow and red winter apples, some honey, pronounced spice notes, rather high acidity, and good mineral notes with a “mineral water character”. The long aftertaste is fruity and spicy, and shows minerality. 93-94 p A recently released Krug Vintage usually come across as more firm and closed than this, so I don’t feel that the 2003 really needs to be cellared before it can be enjoyed. On the other hand, the acidity and balance are good enough for me to think that this wine will keep quite a long time, as befits a Krug Vintage. It may even turn out that the 2003 surprises us with its longevity and gains from cellaring, just as the hot Champagne vintages 1976 and 1989, but those who are cautious shouldn’t really assume this will be the case.
Yes, the 2003 is up to the typical Krug standard! It does show some 2003 character, but not too much of it. There’s definitely some hot vintage character to this vintage, including notes of ripe fruit, but not more than what is shown by many prestige Champagnes from the 2000 vintage. The acidity, freshness and minerality are at such a level that I’d never had guessed it was a 2003 if I had been served this wine blind. Once you know it’s a Krug, on the other hand, the acidity does seem a bit lower than usual for a Krug. But I don’t see any need to give the Krug style a new interpretation in order to accept the 2003 as a true Krug. So I don’t see any need to go down the B*ll*ng*r avenue and rechristen it “2003 by Krug”...

Exceptional wine, perfect balance, soft rich feel, round and lush, polished and with an effortless feel to it like it should be given the pedigree. We have had a lot of questions marks about this vintage and indeed when it comes to Krug it transcends the vintage worries. Impressive and an easy 96

Krug 2003.
Tydelig mer modning og mørkere frukt.
Fortsatt pen frukt, men holder ikke mot de beste.
Svak fin mousse.
Masse frukt i munn.

It's young and fresh and I think perhaps not very evolved from the bottle we had maybe 8 years ago. Long life ahead of it.

Acidity medium only for champagne because of the super hot vintage, but it doesn't affect the liveliness and balance of the wine. Good density and medium+ body but in good balance.

More ginger and lychee on the nose than usual, and sweet in the mouth with mango, lychee and peach. Well built and structured but like 89 Krug overshadowed by the vintages before/after. 95

Very clean and succulent but not broad and deep. It won’t hurt to cellar for another decade.

Krug 2003 - beautiful gold color. Intense expressive nose, fresh red fruits (redcurrant), nuts, wood, peach, white fruits. Freshness, weight, beauty and monster. Great palate weight, rounded with great freshness, great acidity that deliver freshness and elegance.

The nose is expressive from the get up with notes of candied fruits, toast, almond, truffle butter and brioche. The palate is kind of like '03 red Burg. Showing ripe apple and to a lesser extent pear, the ripeness here is more rounded than opulent. Nice chalk notes on both initial nose and palate, although fading with airtime. Lacks the next level of focus and finesse on the palate. Noticeable evolution, at least with this bottle as a recent benchmark, over the last year

Great balance of acidic freshness, fine mousse and a body with pain grille / brioche, white fruit and a touch of nuttiness. Great pairing both with oysters and a cold fish roe pasta starter at home.

K&L Champagne Tent Tasting (K&L, San Francisco): Toasty, ripe peach, pear; great acidity on palate, needs time to integrate. This is a big and bold wine (consistent with Krug style) that definitely has character from 2003 but also has great acidity on the palate. This is very young but has great potential to be very enjoyable. 92-94++.

Fete de Champagne Grand Tasting (Astor Center, NYC.): Sweet on the nose with honey, nuts, flowers, more honey and brioche. Lemony acid on the palate. A little stark. Some nuts. Not impressive. Not a fan of 03 Champagne at all. Nose - 5/6, Palate - 4/6, Finish - 4/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1/2 = 14/20.

One of the better champagnes of that year. Definite lemon peel at start. Restrained tannin's (almost locked up) which was offset by the zesty fruit finish of lemon. Also a noticeable dusty limestone aftertaste . This definitely needs some age to it. I bought 6 more to experience.

Dinner with Olivier Krug (Mandarin Oriental Hotel, Central, Hong Kong): Olivier Krug pointed out with pride that they had made this wine with 25% Pinot Meunier to maintain its freshness in a very hot year......"but not Pinot Meunier as we know it, Jim", he might have added.

Great Krug, yeasty, brioche, a hint of nuttiness with crisp acidity and nice bubbles. Still has many years ahead of it.

Yeah, its a big Krug, but man oh man is it a great Krug. Big expressive nose up front, rich and fat on the mid palate but utterly penetrating and crisp on the back.

A Taste of Krug Champagne (K&L Wine Merchants(Redwood City, CA)): Golden yellow color with an abundance of rapidly rising pin prick sized bubbles, and rich hazelnut, brioche, citrus peel, and mineral aromas. On the palate, it's complex, refined and well structured with a rich delicate mousse and ample apples, tart lemon, hazelnut, subtle spice and mineral flavors. Long finish. ID = 113015. Disgorged Winter 2012/13 Blend of 46% PN, 29% Chardonnay, and 25% Pinot Meunier

Dyp kraftig frukt samt autolyse på nesen.
Powerhouse pakket inn i fløyel
Heftig konsentrasjon og rik frukt, men har samtidig friskheten i behold.
Den holder fullt trøkk gjennom hele smakskurven.
Laaang finish.

Crisp lemony mineral laced with hot white grapefruit. After time, this does put on some baby fat. Limey finish.

Bold. Pinot-dominant dark fruits and a very Krug oxidative richness to the palate. Plum and yeasty notes. Firm backbone. Actually a better wine than the '98 or '00 at the same stage. Delicious.

A recently released Krug Vintage usually come across as more firm and closed than this, so I don’t feel that the 2003 really needs to be cellared before it can be enjoyed.
