From 1.9L bottle. Very elegant and accessible - a great example of classic mature Barolo (if not of Bartolo’s style in my opinion). Cigar and smoke on the nose, rich and sweet balsamic in the mouth with lots of tertiary wet leaves. Long finish, and no VA. Whilst the 71 was the most disappointing Bartolo in their inconsistent 70s, this 74 was the greatest positive surprise. Showing very well now, albeit with less potential than the 78 and 70 Bartolos. I would this should be drunk up from regular bottle formats. Drink now to 2025. 94pts

Old Nebbiolo at Tolani (Upper West Side, NYC): The 1974 Bartolo Mascarello was classic in every way that an aged Barolo should be. The nose showed dried roses, tar, tobacco and earth with a lively floral perfume. On the palate, it was vibrant with dried cherry, more tobacco and notes of copper. With time in the glass, the wine continued to open and gain in volume and sweetness. The long finish showed faded dry strawberry and a bit of tree bark.

Old Nebbiolo at Tolani (Upper West Side, NYC): Medium ruby color. Very pretty on the nose with elements of wild strawberry, tobacco and tar. With time more of a rhubarb/rose element came out as well. Racy on the palate with flavors of pine and lavender, medium bodied. 93+ pts.

A Knight at babbo (New York): Dark and cloudy with some floaters. Lots of boullion and clay on the nose at first though turning nicely floral and perfumed with hints of sweet licorice and a sour fruity adge. Sweet at it's core but not enough to deal with the elevated and obvious acidity. Nicely terthiary in the mouth with a to-p note of porchini over the minty, licorice fruit. Finishes very short. Nice, fully evolved, deink em if you got em.
