  • The nose on this is initially surprisingly fresh. A nice herbal quality. With time the overwhelming alcohol dominance of this wine reasserts itself.
Fresh acidity on the palate but again the fruit is masked by alcohol. There is lovely pure fruit in there and nice fine tannins but the alcohol just mutes everything.

  • Accidentally excellence!
Corvin’d a glass 2 weeks ago. The “heat” comments were consistent even after 4+ hours. Came back to the bottle today - cork was seeping through the needle hole. OMG! The Mascarello magic!!! Just beautiful! Be patient, it’s coming… 😋

  • Gorgeous nose - cherry, plum, rose petal. A bit of a bruiser though - unfortunately, far from the elegance you would expect from Bartolo Mascarello - here, the alcohol was just too much, almost unbearable. Very unbalanced- you get some of the sweet cherry flavors but the heat from the alcohol masks a lot of the other nuanced flavors. From memory, perhaps my least favorite Bartolo I've ever had.

  • Clear ruby with a nicely brown rim. After 3 hours in a decanter, the nose is alcohol forward with dry floral notes. The mouth is dark fruits, plum, cherry and currant. Strongly both acidic and tannic, but due to its youth imho. In 5 years this already approachable Barolo will be even more balanced.

  • Drank over three hours. This really got going after one hour. Subtle precise nose and palate displaying dried roses, red fruit, dark fruit, and tar. Light mouth feel, but full of flavor. Amazing balance and symmetry. One of the better vintages of this I have had.

(Bartolo Mascarello Barolo, Barolo) Transparent brick red with pink highlights. In the nose, a touch of alcohol leads to aromas of fresh, bright redcurrant; wild strawberry; and sour cherry, with hints of dried flowers, worn leather, and asphalt. The pleasantly restrained palate offers dried cherry, cranberry, and even caramelized strawberry. Supple tannins emerge on the way to a pleasantly astringent, slightly bitter, and spicy finish. A graceful wine that is decidedly present yet understated and elegant. Postmodern Barolo: The War That Never Was
