What a delight! Lovely even immediately after opening, with blackberries, cherries, leather, and a distinct floral note, followed by a rich and exceptionally long aftertaste. In the course of the next 40 minutes or so, the cherries become more prominent, the leather slides into tobacco, and the floral note becomes fennel. Gradually, over the next hour, the richness fades from the aftertaste and is replaced by a quiet elegance, building to a note of intense fruitcake spices. I'd expect this to continue to be a very great pleasure for at least 3 more years, probably longer. [Tasted over more than two hours from the Jancis Robinson glass. The score reflects the wine at about the 40 minute point and after. I gave this bottle two weeks upright for the sediment to settle out.] (Previously tasted 11/16/2019 and 6/19/2021.)

Garnet color with light brown edge: persistent metallic nose from opening to 2 hrs later, more iron than steely; cranberry and under ripe plum and berry notes developed later; tannic and astringent mid palate; riper berry fruit on the finish but little signs of this wine having a enjoyable old age

Dark colour. Oxidised, medicinal and muted aroma palette. Sits beautifully in the mouth. Great tannic structure. Drifts towards tawny port (without the sweetness). Tastes like a warm vintage. Absolutely lovely!
My guess: 1989 and my flight-winner. Pleasures from the weakest vintage to ever stir the Bdx lovers (after '91, '92 and '93 almost anything would have been chalked up as classic and amazing)! Wow!

From dblMG. A wee bit thinning in the edges, a wee bit diluted, still with some fruit left, though, tobacco-notes and a fine structure. But, but, even from this format it seems on the way down. Can't speak for the provinence, though. #GlKonge150#Nytårskur

20 Vintages of Troplong Mondot: This was a trainwreck of a vertical tasting. An average of meager 86.8 pts, only 6 wines with a rating of more than 90pts. Almost all wines pre 2017 and a winemaker/style change have dried out. Too much extraction and heavy oak treatment produced wines that did not age well, have no fruit and charm left. I don’t have group ratings but the sentiment in the room was similar (this was the fastest tasting ever with this group). It was a root day but that can’t explain everything. Also, the provenance or storage of the bottles was no issue (all bought En Primeur, stored perfectly since). Troplong Mondot seems to be a victim of a series of bad choices, mainly the wrong consultant. Luckily, the future looks brighter.
TN: This showed slightly faulty, green-ish and had some hints of TCA.

Fortunately my experience was the same as Occasional WG below. From magnum. Very classic with a hint of St Emilion softness and flesh. No need to wait.

I am not sure where the lower scores are coming from for this wine.
Great bouquet right off the bat when opening. Into decanter for 45 mins. Really nice fruit forward red and black fruit nose, roasted aromas, smoke. Nice acidicty and balance, a touch acid heavy but really solid finish that had good persistance. Solid effort here! I liked it alot. I think this is mid-maturity and could probably hold another 5-8 years to get to fully mature

Bought in 1997, in my cellar for 25 years. Metallic, weak fruit, tannins solid, no joy in this wine. Stark contrast to the 1995 Viader (also 25 years in my cellar) that was joyous.

Brownish rim. But deep red in its core. No sign of oxidation. Smoke, a little fruit. Retro nasal however dark berries, almost thick for its age. Does not fall apart after one hour in the decanter. Acidity still in a a good place. Never gets dominant. This also goes for the roast aromas. Stays very pleasant. Can compete with Pontet Canet 1994.

Similar experience to last year. An intriguing nose of damp earth, fleshy red and blue fruit, and some dried herbs. The palate is medium plus body with moderate acidity and medium plus tannin. One would hope for a bit more ripeness here but that’s a seriously minor complaint. The structure of this wine leads me to think this will be better in 3-5 more years. Great wine!

Now fully awake and very different from my note of 11/16/2019. Sweet blackberries and powdered cocoa, with hints of black olives, cedar, and caramel. Still plenty of tannin. Very long aftertaste. Should be special for 3 or 4 more years. Possibly longer, but there's no reason to wait.

My last of these six; shared with friends. Intriguing as always, and a surprising sweetness to the fruit and reserve of power. A great example of Bordeaux's ability to age very gracefully and show well.

Like most bottles these days I drank this over 3 days. This bottle showed best on the last day with clean dark red fruit in balance with the fine but persistent tannins. Very enjoyable. I think this is at its mid-life and if you like old Bordeaux let it rest another decade.

Similar to previous notes, amazingly open and sweet upon opening the bottle, though became a little heavier and austere over and hour or two. Still a delightful experience to drink an old bottle like this, though it may feel over the hill to some, and missing some power.

PnP. Lovely dark chocolate cherry/raspberry aromas out the gate. Dried red fruit, leather and damp earth in the background. Outrageously good on the palate. Medium body, medium acid and grippy tannin. There’s a bit of roughness between the acid and tannin but that may resolve with a bit more time in bottle or it may overtake this wine. The fruit could support more aging but it’s great now. Drink or hold for the next 5+ years and enjoy over the next 10.

This was quite excellent, still so full of life and expressive, elegant. Maybe not a great food wine as this is more about subtlety and delicacy at this stage. i think this showed better than previous bottles I had because I had it standing upright in my cabinet for about a week, which seems to settle things.

Similar to previous notes. Showing well, surprisingly fresh, alive and sweet fruit but with serious structure too, and a slightly dry finish - quite composed, with power and elegance. You wouldn't know it was a below average vintage.

Pleasantly surprised by this. Am guessing this was huge when young, but is now so open. Has some backbone, sweet fruit profile and nice dryness on the finish. Everything in the right place really, especially considering this was not a great vintage. Showing well and not over-the-hill.

This has turned into something totally different from what the early reviews from Parker and Tanzer suggested. It has now evolved into a wine of elegance, restraint, and quiet refinement. Aromas and flavors of blackberries, herbs, and perhaps the faintest possible hint of vanilla. In its own way a quite lovely wine. Some slight tannins emerge after about an hour in the glass, so my guess is that it will probably stay in beautiful shape for at least 5 years, possibly longer. I wouldn't be at all surprised if someone who especially loves this style were to give it a significantly higher rating. (On reflection, I'm starting to believe that, however improbably, this wine is still very much closed down. I'd personally like to taste it again in about two years, and it may well need more time than that.)

Popped and poured. A little oxidized on the nose. Raisin, dried black fruit, cassis, some ripe red fruit. Very clean. Loads of fruit on the palate. A touch of bitter character meshes with the acidity. This probably just needs some air. Tannins are moderate+ and will probably open up over the next few hours. The oxidized character had me a bit worried but the structure of this wine indicates plenty of life left.

Tragically, taken to a friends for dinner and it was served with eggplant casserole and bratwurst. But in the context of this context, it did very well. Classic old Bordeaux nose, tertiary flavors and easy integrated tannins. Really perhaps the best bottle of this I've had, fills me with remorse for the ones I've drunk. Will plan on cellaring the remainder a while longer.

On nose : medium+ intensity, red fruit: plum, olive, tobacco, clove, not much complexity, the aroma is flat. The wine is too old.
On palate : dry, medium acidity, medium flavour intensity, medium alcohol, medium body, but no change of flavour intensity after 2.5 hrs, flat in flavour.
The wine is corked, quite disappointed.

This sat somewhere in between the Fombrauge and the Barde-Haut. Given the pedigree, I expected a bit more. 1994 however, was not an easy vintage, and it does show here. It wasn't very expressive, quite unexceptional.

I had a long trip that ended with having dinner in Kentucky at my friends house. Prior to leaving, I wrapped a few bottles in foil so that they could taste the wines blind. I was not going to decant this but I had forgot my Ah So and the cork broke and I had to push it. When I decanted the wine, the aromatics were jumping out. So good. When I looked at the wine in the light, it looked like a wine that was less than 10 years old. I thought oops. I did not bring the 1994. Well it was the 94 and it was tremendous. Earth, olives and tobacco, along with dark berries. The tannins come on really strong on the finish. The tannins are very pleasant. This wine exceeded my expectations and might be at its peak.

Medium ruby with bricking appropriate for its age; nose is subtle but has good secondary and tertiary complexity with forest floor, slight iodine, leafy, with swirling some cherry fruit, tobacco; palate is full bodied, red fruit, tannins somewhat drying especially through the midpalate, slightly tart; finish is short-medium length. Interesting especially on the nose, but now a superlative wine and the palate is starting to dry out. Drink now. 89

This bottle had been opened the previous night, but the wine still needed 30-60 minutes in the glass. Splendid nose (94 pts), and initially a palate that is chewy and a bit quare. This wine is very structured and not at all as fruitforward as recent vintages. Yet, solid, plummy, fruit and a bargain at this pricepoint.

Surpringly good. Deep ruby and young looking. Good cherry and plum infused fruit. Good depth of flavour, still some tannins but in balance with the wine. Flavoursome drinking, good mouthfeel and good length. Great for the price!

Colour is purplish-red. Wine had a muted nose, with notes of blue berries, cassis, liquorice and oak. On the palate, the wine is tight, tannic and grippy. Bottle breathed for an hour and notes of mushrooms, chocolate and wood flavours appeared. Managed to pick up some ash and lead notes as well after the wine opened up more. Structure is holding up very well, with a long and spicy finish. Medium to full body. The heat and energy level of the wine is unmistakable. Complex and formidable, the wine finishes with a touch of class and refineness.
Just had the 1996 Cantenac Brown a few weeks ago and the profile of the 2 wines are very different. The Margaux was more ready to drink, subtle and elegant, while the St. Emilion is more complex, refined and has more depth.
After 20 years, the wine still doesn't feel ready to be consumed. Give it another 3 to 5 years, at least.

Dinner at Home: Ruby with a bit of bricking appropriate for age; nose is mature, wafts out of the decanter while decanting but in the glass is more subtle, leafy, forest floor, some roasted cherries, a little iodine and leather; palate is full bodied, high acid, still quite fresh tasting, some cherry fruit; finish is medium length but drying out. This is one of my better bottles, on par with the first bottle I opened in 2011. An excellent fully mature but still fresh-tasting mid-tier bordeaux with good character and complexity. Will likely last a year or two but won't improve, so I will drink my last bottle by 2016. 90

I could've sworn this was corked. Stinky, watered down and frail on the palate as soon as I popped the cork. Reflective of the difficult vintage and wet harvest. But then, two hours later it smells of leather and tobacco, there are dark fruits on the palate, it's become full and even tannins have popped. Time & oxygen do wonders. It is not a superb Troplong but for a year where ripeness was almost impossible to achieve, this is quite enjoyable.
PAIRING: Skirt steak, frites and salad. Simple meal but good pairing. B+

Monthly Tasting Group: Right Bank Bordeaux (Levain, Mpls): Very dark red color. PNP, drank 1 glass over 90 minutes. Loved the nose right off the bat with its ripe blue fruit, blueberry, vanilla bean, plum, boysenberry, florals, and graphite. The palate can't quite come up to the level of the nose, but while autere is still attractive. There is the blue fruits, some earth, graphite, mint, dill, cassis, and a dusty tannic finish. 91+pts.

Dark red-violet color. Menthol-tinged nose, with green bean, black cherry, leather and oak spice all prominently displayed. On arrival, medium tannin and a slightly lifted acidity reminded me how chilly and wet this harvest actual was. Neither lean nor rich, shows modest intensity in the mouth. Racy finish. A salute to the passing of the chateau's owner-manager, one of the great ladies of Bordeaux. Bottle #2 of two.

-- popped and poured -- -- tasted a single pour, non-blind, over approx. 20 min. --
Some sediment present. Nose smelled like a slightly aged wine (10 – 15 yo). Strong pencil lead flavor, along with a pleasant earthiness; simultaneously fruity; smooth, and drinking well now, but I think this has room to improve with a bit more time in the cellar.

Started a little lean, but opened up within 30 minutes; Has a dark chery color with only some bricking at the edges. Still has good black currant fruit and acidity to balance it. Friday Night Double Blind Tasting $40+ (Bin 75): Dark garnet, dense color, a little bricking but very youthful appearance; sandy, wet earth, autumnal, cigar, stank, some red currant, green pepper; palate is larger and more tannic but a bit lean in the amount of fruit, leather, cigar, some nobility; good especially for its age- people guessed early 2000s.

Some Brett upon opening. Cork in perfect condition. Deep red, with no signs of advancing age. This particular bottle seems to have significant life left. Vegetal elements and suboptimal ripeness, reflective of the vintage year. Cigar ash and toasted tinderbox, reminiscent of when you empty the graphite and wood shavings from the pencil sharpener. IMO, likely not to improve with added age - it is what it is...

Decanted for 1.5 hrs. Dark red color. Quite a bit of heat on the nose and a bit of funk. Light color fruit on the nose. Nice fruit on the nose, but a bit blocky. Good age on the taste, a bit dusty strawberry and black cherry on the taste, also a hint of earthy ness and wet rock on the finish. Overall enjoyable wine, but probably not the best CP.

Nose has subtle red fruits, some dustiness; palate shows some drying tannins, red fruit; drying finish. This is a wine on the decline, losing its fruit. Somewhat enjoyable now, but probably past its prime... I don't think the fruit outlived the tannins. 1-2 hours air: more red fruit on the nose, some more juicy fruit on the palate. Somewhat better than when first opened, but tannins are still drying and the wine is likely on the downslope. Drink up!

This wine has mature characteristics (suttle nose, bit of bricking, etc.) but it still has some rough edges that I am not sure will be helped by age. Forest floor, mature dark fruit but with a rather wood like tart finish. I'll save the rest for tasting in the several years time.

Fully mature, with fennel, earth, smoke, black cherry, herb, wet forest floor and mocha notes, the wine is quite successful for the vintage. With soft, round textures and just a minor touch of dryness in the finish, the wine ends with red and black fruits, olive tapenade and a hint of cocoa. There is no reason to age this any longer.

This has been a wine that has given experiences from very nice to completely disappointing. This was my last .375 and it was perhaps the best. After 2 hours decanting the nose was great. Taste was not as good with slightly thin fruit, but the mouthfeel was very nice. My points would have been 89, but the nose was so addictive that I gave some bonus.

Quite mediocre for its pedigree. On the nose this was a nicely perfumed mature wine, but in the mouth there was a much limited taste and still formidable tannins. Aftertaste was very much missing. I have experienced some bottle variation with this wine over several bottles quite lately with the best being quite good and the worst completely fruitless. This one was somewhere in-between. Any remaining bottles should be drunk the sooner the better.

Avg to closed on the nose. Wine is well rounded but there are spikes if "bitter" tannins that spoil what would have been a nice smooth mouthfeel. Had in l'Aubrevoir in Athens with minimal decanting. Didnt really evolve over the time it took us to finish it.

At first, mderate cork. Fortunately cork disappeared after some minutes. Very good wine for the vintage. Slightly unbalanced. An unusual strong minerality in the nose, rather light on the palate, medium bodied but lacking fruit. Rather strong tannines. Will probably not become any better.

Dinner Chez Jahnke: Drinking very nicely right now. Still good structure and some of the classic black berry, chocolate, and coffee notes that I often find in Troplong. Clearly not an opulent wine, but with dinner, this was dynamite. Great balance with good structure and finish. If you like more truffle notes in your right bank wines, I would give this another 5 years minimum to have them develop. Too bad this was my last bottle.

Magnum. Opened and decanted 2 hours before drinking - not enough! Deep red with little sign of age. Interesting nose - some floral notes and also blackberries. Palate less interesting- some musty flavours (but none on nose - unusual) and some tannins but with time the sweet fruit started to show through, especially on the finish, and the mustiness went. Quite mineral - more left bank than rt bank. Hopeful that time will pay dividends here.

Nice nose, nice palate, a bit thin on the finish. Complements a meal well, and has some secondary caharcteristics that give it a bit of interest. But there is just not a lot of 'there' there. Perfectly fine, no zing, and no sign that it will improve. Drink.

Opened not decanted. At first, some mustiness and dry tannins. After awhile, dark fruit, light on the palate with some citrus notes, raisins and a dry finish. Will let sit in the bottle. At this point Fair to Good.

Champagne-brunch and extras (Terkels appartment): Dark red color with a brick red hue. Refined, elegant nose with black currant, prunes, tobaco and licorise. Nice black berries start the palate, leading into tobaco and some licores on the midpalate. Nice length, but ending fairly dry. Only showing the first signs off age, so I imagine this will improve for several years to come. Still quite surprising how good this really was.

Deep ruby core, narrow light ruby red rim. Quite good intensity on the nose with developed aromas of plums, moist earth and vanilla spice. However this disappointed on the palate. There was moderately intense plum and moist earth with some vanilla and herbal notes but the fruit was rather drowned out for me by the firm/hard tannins, and I also felt the alcohol was a little out of balance on the medium length finish. There just wasn't enough fruit remaining to balance the alcohol and tannins, and as such this wouldn't of got any better with more time.

Gradually, over the next
hour, the richness fades from the aftertaste and is replaced by a quiet elegance, building to a note of intense fruitcake spices.

Troplong Mondot: 1959-2012 (Stockholm, Sweden): Semi-blind (knew which 17 vintages that were being served).
Wow!

Great wine!

Drank this bottle today at Swa Garden Restaurant.

This is one of my better bottles, on par with the first bottle I opened in 2011. An excellent fully mature but still fresh-tasting mid-tier bordeaux with good character and complexity.

Taste is very good, medium body, lovely black fruit, chocolate, coffee, tobacco, still a lot of tannin but round and balanced with nice acidity giving a very good mouth feeling. Long finish. Not higher than 90 points because of the light and slightly faded nose.

Mature wine, nose sweet with chocolate and leather and a hint of pencil lead. Taste: some dark fruit, again chocolate, not very concentrated classic Bordeaux style. Taste ends a bit dry with somewhat edgy tannins.

Avg to closed on the nose. Wine is well rounded but there are spikes if "bitter" tannins that spoil what would have been a nice smooth mouthfeel. Had in l'Aubrevoir in Athens with minimal decanting. Didnt really evolve over the time it took us to finish it.

Where the heck is the fruit. Very below average. Tough year, yes - and Troplong Mondot has managed to make quite a a mess of it. very tannic, very faded fruit. Avoid.

I found this wine in a case of another Bordeaux in my cellar. I was excited to find it and figured it would be perfect right around now. Beautiful color and nice nose to start. After 2+ hours, absolutely no fruit. I found one more bottle in the mixed case, and I am waiting another year or so to open it, but I do not expect it to get much better.

Considerably better than my other bottle, consumed about three years ago. Not a big or flashy wine, but a solid, balanced and traditional claret which improved over the 3 hours of being open (not decanted, just consumed slowly).

A barely good bordeaux it should be consumed as the fruit is thin and the finish somewhat angular. Better wines can be found for the money.

Never improved. We had a great bottle several years ago in Reno. That's the sense memory I use as a benchmark for this label and vintage.

I had a much better bottle of this a few months back, this was rather lean and dry - more like a Medoc than St Emilion. Showed up why this is not a vintage to pursue with much enthusiasm.

Nice licorice flavor but not nearly enough fruit at this point in its evolution. It didn't tasted closed, but rather washed out. Not bad but certainly not what Troplong Mondot is capable of.

Austin Wine Tasting (Castle Hill Cafe): Dark garnet red with a little opaqueness. Plum, tobacco, cassis, leather, and jammy blackberry. Relatively high acidity following the radio Coteau, but well balanced. Fleshy, round, and expansive mouthfeel. Showed significantly better than when first opened.

Decanted about three hours before tasting. On the nose, aromas of mocha, plums and earth. On the palate, medium bodied with plum, currants and blackberry, with a medium length finish where the oak is very well integrated. Tannins are smooth at this point.
