PYCM wine dinner at Anhelo restaurant in downtown Phoenix.
Hard to not be in awe over this opportunity to drink a 33 year old DRC following an awesome PYCM wine dinner- and it be killer. The wine is fantastic in every way- deep, loaded with fruit, spice and everything nice. Wasn’t an environment to take detail notes but the impression was a lasting one- knowing full well we were lucky for the wine to be in such great condition. Fabulous

A bottle that was unexpressive and didn't show vintage or RSV characteristics. A disappointment after having drunk two perfect bottles during the past couple of years (from a different parcel).

An immediately arresting nose of Asian spice, smoke, hoisin and dark fruit with savory gamey notes. Drinking stunningly well now but can age a lot longer and I should add drinking much younger than the 01 La Tache tonight.

This note will echo my mid 2021 note. Simply world class, and once again the best bottle of any RSV I've ever had. Unsurprisingly it was from the same original assortment case, which had perfect provenance. Last bottle, but the memory will never fade.

Opened an hour before pouring. Garnet to light red. At first, all stems, which receded somewhat. Surprisingly lighter weight, almost like a Gevrey Grand Cru rather than Vosne-Romanée. Light strawberry fruit and soil, real pepperiness from the stem inclusion, and it became more chocolaty over time. Great acidity for a 1990. I kept waiting over 2-3 hours for more texture and fruit, but they never arrived. Excellent but far short of amazing or exciting, which, of course, is what you want with DRC.
The nose simply draws you in with all sorts of engaging florals. There are violets and rose petals and some smokiness from stem inclusion. It has an intense core of red fruits and is silky of texture. It is a wine of finesse and delicacy but possesses latent power. It builds and fans out on the finish. A beautiful bottle and wine of the day for mine.

Domaine Romanee Conti Lunch (Phoenix, AZ USA): Slight bricking, this is an absolutely phenomenal example of DRC in the peak of its secondary phase. Remarkably clean aroma, palate, and color the provenance was clearly excellent. I reveled in the exotic spice and the layers of flavor and subtle nuance.
Preferred this to the wine served beside it, which turned out to be 91 Richebourg.

A Very Nice Tuesday Night: Definitely the best bottle of 90 DRC RSV that I've ever had. A perfect provenance bottle, that is likely as good as this vintage gets. A very, very good bottle.

I apologize. We drank this at my wife's citizenship dinner along with 96 Dom Perignon. So, notes were not the order of the day. However, as usual DRC does not disappoint and neither did this one. Actually, I thought it was drinking young and slightly not expressive as I am used to. I asked the sommelier for his thoughts and he disagreed and thought it was drinking well and mature. Keep in mind this was my bottle and not his and he is a very good friend so I trust. Maybe I was off on my palate. Having said this, the wine was excellent an certainly pleased I have more. One note is that the cork was fully covered but not saturated. Density of cork remained rock solid.

(small Burg 1990 tasting) Full nose. Fully mature but still vigorous. Both black and red cherry. Some chocolate. Flowery and complex spiciness. Very stemmy. Hints of dill. Most characteristic. Very deep. Fully mature palate with silky tannins, lovely concentration and good grip. Harmonius, dense but slghtly dryish at the end. Profound, but probably even better a few years ago. The DRC style style with the stems shine through.

I've had this wine several times and many times along with the '91, which I generally preferred...however, not this time. This blew the '91 out of the park...( it was not a good bottle). Medium color..Big tertiary notes of asian spice, sous bois. Very will balance, with softness on the palate and nice sweetness in the finish.

DRC in AZ - Tucson Comes to Scottsdale: Served blind. Well, you know it's an insane lineup when a '90 DRC isn't the clear favorite. This was a solid performance, but I'd be lying if I said I picked it out as a cut above the other wines in the flight. I am sad I didn't have hours to really contemplate this wine.

Holiday Burgundy Lunch (Scottsdale, AZ): Ugh. One taster said VA, and to me it smelled like dirty diapers. Just awful, and didn't blow off one bit with time in the glass.
This bottle had been purchased on release and stored underground. Sometimes you do everything right, and the wine is still FUBAR.

DRC vs Leroy Dinner (Kheam Hock Road): Good, but not quite as good as the Leroy from the same vintage that we drank alongside. This had such a nice nose - earth, meat, a touch of crushed violets, dark cherries, and a lovely lift of spice. Lovely. The palate was very nice too, with a round mouthful of blueberries, dark cherries and a beautiful midpalate of Vosne spice and little licks of minerality, all pulling away into a long, powerful finish. Perhaps a bit sterner than the Leroy. There was just a chew of tannins and kumquat peel at the end, a bit clenched, but otherwise, this was a powerful, compelling wine. Lovely without being mindblowing, and starting to drink well now.

2018 Villa d’Este Wine Symposium – Kelly, RJ, Justin and Kevin's excellent adventure; 11/7/2018-11/11/2018 (Villa D’este, Lake Como): Luck would have it that the last bottle drunk was at the Domaine in 2017. Exquisite nose at the youthful peak displaying pure red and black fruit, crushed blackberry, candied raspberry, nicely developed sous bois, Vosne spice, a hint of blue cheese, grilled ribeye and limestone. Beautifully integrated youthful palate, very finely layered pure red and black fruit, perfect balance and harmony, perfect amount of acidity and mineral, and a seamless long blackberry driven finish with lovely sous bois and grilled fat at the end. It is drinking beautifully but can improve further, especially you are looking for subtle sweet red fruit and additional tertiary notes.

It not often you can say this came in third but when the other two wines in the flight are 90 LT and 90 Riche I guess its possible. This was the most linear of the three wine and was very good. Black and blue fruits, some good spices - vosne spice, asian five spice, red berries, smoke and earth. This didnt have the depth of the LT or the overt spice notes of the Riche. A great bottle that I would love to try again.

Ripe red cherry, maybe even underripe, soft, mild perfume. Bright and energetic. A certain green leafy energy in this. Fruit is still a little blue. On the palate this is still totally vibrant and concentrated. Well balanced and built, but still youthful. The most polished of the '90 flight including La Tâche and Richebourg, and the most difficult to pick out vineyard level nuance beyond the overall character of 1990 DRC.

La Paulée de San Francisco - Gala Dinner (The Fairmont - San Francisco CA): Late night, small glass, brief note. Not quite as good as the bottle from two days earlier, or perhaps it was too late in the night to fully enjoy. Still so much depth and concentration with a massive, enticing and complex spicebox.

Serious Supper: Light ruby with minimal fading. This also had upfront stemminess, although more cool menthol than the '96 La Tâche and not as jarring. Elegant medium weight. Surprising mix of green flavors and fruit for this ripe vintage. Like the Leroy, admirable acidity and a delicious twist of citrus. Again, I found the mouth feel a little lacking for a wine at this level. Light soil is in the background throughout. Not overwhelmingly impressive, but it steadily improved over the 3 or 4 hours it was open. No doubt at least excellent and seemingly close to its peak.
Even better, more aromatic, and more harmonious feel the next night after being recorked without any preservative measures.

The 1990 RSV continues to cruise along, blossoming in the glass with a lavish and 'glossy' bouquet of black cherry, blackberry, sous bois, dark spice and a touch of game. On the palate the wine is ample and full-bodied, with a chassis of fine, melted tannins (though just a few rough edges poke out on the finish - arrested phenolic maturity?) enrobed in juicy, vibrant fruit which lingers through the long and penetrating finish. Bottle number 7492.

Winos' excellent adventure in France; 6/22/2017-6/27/2017 (All over France): Another humbling experience. The clue once again from a great vintage. Showing some maturity, subtle raspberry with a hint of blackberry, a hint of sous bois, sap, grilled cep and espresso. Fully integrated youthful silky palate, very precise and pure, good acidity and freshness. The tannins are fully integrated. I am think 85. Our Georgian friend, Sandro Khatiashvili, who imports wine to Russia calls it at 1990. (BTW he has encyclopedic knowledge of everything Burgundy.) M. Noblet nods. Now I am thinking Richebourg. Kelly calls it RSV once again. Kelly is the Master Jedi! This particular bottle is at peak.

A small impromptu gathering at Adam's place - 02 Salon, 90 DRC Richebourg and RSV & 21 Gruaud Larose (Adam's House in DC): Very youthful nose displaying perfectly ripe crushed blackberries, exotic incense, a hint of stem, espresso and only a hint of sous bois. Excellent concentration, nicely layered fruits, ripe dark fruit driven palate impression, good acidity, nicely integrated tannins and lovely long finish. This is an extremely youthful example. Drinking beautifully in very youthful way.

At a 90 red Burg GC tasting event with the following line-up:
1. Jadot Beaune Clos Des Ursules 2. Vogue Boones Mares 3. Rousseau Charmes-Chambertin 4. Bouchard Le Corton 5. Faiveley Corton Clos des Cortons (Mag) 6. Ponsot Griotte-Chambertin 7. DRC Romanee St Vivant 8. Henry Rebourseau Charmes-Chambertin 9. Hubert Lignier Clos de la Roche
I had high expectation for the 90 DRC RSV due to provenance described by the wine owner. It has good deal of matured pinot fruits on the nose but struggled to show more. This wine at the current age should be showing better than it should be, if not at its best.

Ruby center, grenadine rim. Some initial stemminess (our friend described it as "celery") and increasingly fragrant mint and green tones. Medium weight, average acidity, young but subdued dark red fruit, some late spiciness, and moderate tannins. This struck me as more vigorous than a bottle we had 4 years ago, but while it was excellent to be sure, it once again lacked the extra dimensions both aromatically and texturally that can allow DRC wines to stand apart. I must be brutally honest and say that the other night, I had a 1996 Laurent Grand Cru that I enjoyed even more than this.

Dark red in color, beautiful mature burgundy nose with dark red fruit, spices and undergrowth. Palate showing ripe secondary flavors, with enough width but not enough depth. Drinking very well now and probably won't improve with more cellaring.

Popped and poured. The nose had flowers, tea leafs, red fruit, dark fruit and wild berries. The wine still tasted very young. The intensity reflected the superb vintage. The wine actually had gained more power with more time in the glass. The palate was thick, jammy and fine. I think it still has 5 years ahead of it, but it is in a great drinking window now.

Huge and immediate nose, spicy. Big red fruit flavors, an intense wine, still very energetic, youthful, firm, high acid levels; still many primary flavors, some secondary, no tertiary - incredible for a wine 25 years old. A "primal" wine in many ways but after two hours it displayed a stunning elegance. Others at my table rated it even higher.

Tasted blind at the Domaine, the 1990 DRC Romanée St. Vivant is in a lovely place, displaying expressive aromas of wild plums, baked cherries—with a hint of sur maturité—roast game, earthy sous bois, and violets. Large-scaled and expansive on the palate, this was really very serious, and for all the talk about RSV improving over the last few decades, it is clear that the wine was no slouch in the past either, at least in years such as 1990.

Fathers 60th Birthday; 8/31/2014-9/1/2014: More oak and funky horse than the Echezeaux '93, but otherwise fairly similar. Big, intense young nose, full of pinot spices, pepper, sage, thai basil and some green notes of cut grass and lots of red, dark berries. unripe blackberries, cranberries and those small wild black cherries you find in the woods. High intensity. This is still young, but with supple fruit on the palate. High acidity, distinct tannins and an incredible length.

1990 Dinner at University Club (Chicago): This appeared to be a better bottle than the last one I tried. Beautiful nose of spice, red fruit, some dried roses, touch a mushrooms. Forward, sweet and delicate on the palate. Great energy and grip. Love the detail and while the age is evident, this has still got a long way to go.

This wine has a lovely core of cherry and raspberry fruit. The nose is just taking on some aged characters and it smells of cold tea, dried flowers and beef stock. It is full and sweet, sappy and complex. You get the ripeness of the vintage yet the wine is ethereal and shows restraint. Feels like its just entering a nice drinking window that may last for several decades.

Acker "Paulee" Burgundy Dinner (The Fourth - New York NY): Lots of very ripe red and black fruit. Lush and powerful with great spice, great density, great length. Certainly on the opulent side for Vosne Grand Cru, this is still a baby. I preferred this vs the 1991 vintage also tasted, but others disagreed tonight.

youthful and fresh with a fragrant floral nose. The palate was balanced but a touch light at the moment. I felt like it wanted to give up more of the savage fruit but it was held in check by it's youth.

This is a very strong wine and clearly worthy of high scores. Many people at the dinner loved this wine with it's dark, mysterious and brooding character. Red fruits dominate and there is ample structure and finish. Anyone would be happy to drink this. For my palate though, there was a touch too much of the animal and fading flower notes in this wine to be able to say that I could like it as much as the Grands ech, richebourg, or la tache from the same years. Those wines consitently outshine this one in my book.

Opened and drank over 90 min. We definitely finished this too quickly as the best sip was the last. A big round wine the showed plenty of spice, musty notes and red berry fruit on the nose and palate. A super long and expansive finish. That said i believe this bottle was slightly cooked as there was a tartness that seemed out of place. Hope to try a better example.

DRC 1990 (AuZone, Stockholm): Light red colour, rather noticeable brick note (and some deposit in the glass). In the nose red berries and a hint of dark berries, mild spice, some orange, animal notes, development with some leather, some well integrated oak barrel notes. More than medium bodied on the palate, red and some dark berries, violets, definitely spicy, good acidity, some tannin, long aftertaste with tannic bite. Slightly more rustic than the 1990 DRC Échezeaux.
My score: 93-94 p

Grand Cru Burgundy In Honor of a Friend (San Francisco): Medium color with visible sediment. Musty at first. Then, penetrating green aromatics than turned distinctly stemmy. Medium weight with satisfying acidity but it never achieves that magical sense of harmony in the mouth. All anise, smoke and blackberry. Lean, dry feel, so much so that it seems on the verge of attenuation. Really excellent but not to die for, which of course as a DRC wine, it damn well should be.

Lyle's dinner at Melisse, Santa Monica. Color: dark blood marrow. One of the most beautiful noses I've experienced... fragrant, expressive and continued changing. I could have smelled this wine the whole night. On first take: dried flowers, freeze-dried strawberries, mushrooms and au jus. Nose kept changing... old paperback books, leather, more mushrooms and meat drippings. Good acid, dark fruit, sleek in texture with some stemminess. A dark, brooding and muscular but graceful wine. An extremely generous surprise from our visiting friend.

La Paulee Gala (New York, NY): Lots of red and black fruit aromas with great spice. This had some valuable decanter time, but in glass this kept picking up density, fresh fruit and spice over the 20 minutes it remaining in glass. A chameleon. Murky and rusty. Seemed oxidized at first. However, mushroom and earth explodes from the glass, changing every few minutes, with different herbs and piles of dirt. Mouthwatering, with lots of acid, red apples and earth on the palate. Started out interesting an reasonably good, as the night went on got to be outstanding. Still, was expecting a bit more, but perhaps a few more years would make a difference.

Very dark. Brooding earthy, asian spice and dark berries in the nose. Big on the palate. It started to open after being in the glass for an hour. Loads of fruit on the palate and tannins not obtrusive. This wine will last many, many years. We had with the 78 RSV, which had a more expansive nose. I think this wine will develop in the same way with time.

Birthday with Vosne Romanee (Boka - Chicago IL): Open perhaps 3 hours before serving, about of that time was spent in a decanter, then double decanted back. I only give that much detail because we spent so much of the evening comparing this wine and its next glass neighbor, the DRC 93 RSV, which spent the full 3 hours in decanter. The 1990 was incredibly vibrant and charming. Mostly red berries and cherry with a kitchen full of baking spice on the nose. Fruit and spice opened up with 30+ minutes in glass. Great silky tannins, great acidity, this is a very pretty wine. I think it was most people's WOTN. I was wavering, am still wavering but leaning towards the next glass, next note.

Alan's Vosne Romanee Birthday at BOKA (BOKA Restaurant, Chicago IL): Beautiful dark red berry nose with leather, smoke, and a lot of sweet spice. A good bit of mineral as well. Paulee de Hersh - Round 3. (Casa Hersh): Tighter than expected. Most of the group thought it great, but for me the unexpected tightness and a slightly astringent back end kept it out of "great". Versus the 85, I thought it no contest (ie the 85 blew it out of the water), but there were a number of folks who didn't agree with that.

Double decanted, Very elegant Burgundy in complete harmony - a typical 1990-wine, also in the sense, that it seems much younger and fresher than its age. Abundance of fruit here in the foreground, powerfull, primary, too young. #Charity #SøllerødKro

Clearly the most aromatically impressive wine among the '90/'95/'96 Richebourg/La Tache/RSVs we tasted (lucky us!), at least initially. May be showing a bit of age, as that wonderful nose faded on me, and the fruit was a bit thin (at least on that relative scale). Also seemed a tiny bit hot for some reason, but the lengthy finish was impressive indeed.

When in Romanée... (Eleven Madison Park): Pure elegance, and following the two ’88s it seemed almost entirely without structure, a black silk cloth undulating in a wavy slow motion in the wind. A sex kitten of a wine, this is one of those wines you don’t taste so much as feel, as it sneaks up on you weightless and lacey and caresses the palate with its black-fruited silk. Parental discretion advised.

Hanging out with Marc Lazar; 3/16/2006-3/18/2006 (Seattle, WA): Wow, this is one darned exciting wine. The nose started out with a bit of barnyard and a slightly marine smell, not brackish, but just a hint of seaweed and brine air. The palate, wow, bursting with cherries, spice, gorgeously silky on the front and mid but cutting up a bit towards the finish with some overt acidity that detracts. Still, air and food did this well, as the acid became more harmonious. The more we swirled the more you could find on the nose with some nice peat and graphite coming out. Really an exceptional wine that I am probably scoring too conservatively.

Full nose.

Medium color..Big tertiary notes of asian spice, sous bois. Very will balance, with softness on the palate and nice sweetness in the finish.

A sex kitten of a wine, this is one of those wines you don’t taste so much as feel, as it sneaks up on you weightless and lacey and caresses the palate with its black-fruited silk. Parental discretion advised.

Side by side with 1990 Leroy RSV. Drinking wonderfully now. Complex, spicy, very accessable when first opened yet continued to develop over two hours. Lighter color than the Leroy with more expressive nose. A great wine.

One very special evening. From memory. More accessible than the La Tache that followed. Nearly sweet. Great texture. Pure fruit. No sign of age.

Really an exceptional wine that I am probably scoring too conservatively.

deep ruby with slight brick. Full complex nose with ripe fruit, mineral, floral components. Really great with long finish. Great grand cru.

1990 Burgundies (NYC): Medium dark red color, some lightening on the rim. A spicy, gamey nose. Evolved flavors. Medium tannins, but drinks well right now. Exotic spicy finish.
